LIGHTLY ON THE GROUND: Deep Inside the Shockoe Burial Ground (00:28:30)

OMIGOSH…This episode is 28:30 instead of our standard 27:30 Listen and you’ll see why I couldn’t cut more. The only recourse is to snip miniscule moments…about 300 of them…which I will do before reairing as an Evergreen episode. Dan Mouer, archeologist and anthropologist, documents the history of Shockoe Hill Burying Ground Historic District, making this episode eerily apropos to the season when the veil between the living and the dead is thin. Dan uses the word “ghoul” in a sentence about the reality of a mass grave at a teaching medical school.

COUNTERSPIN: Julio Lopez Varona/Puerto Rico, Guerline Jozef/Haitian asylum seekers  (00:28:00)

This week on CounterSpin: If US news media never used the terms “wake-up call” or “racial reckoning” again, with regard to the latest instance of institutional white supremacy brought to light, that would be fine. Far better would be for them to do the work of not just acknowledging that US news media have supported and inflicted racist harms throughout this country’s history, but shedding critical light on the hows and whys of those harms—and taking seriously the idea of repairing them and replacing them with a media ecosystem that better serves us all. The Media 2070: Media Reparations Project encourages conversation and action around that vision. We’ll hear about the work from Alicia Bell, a co-creator and founding director of Media 2070 and current director of the Racial Equity in Journalism Fund, housed within Borealis Philanthropy. And from Collette Watson, director of Media 2070 and vice president of cultural strategy at the group Free Press.

SEA CHANGE RADIO: Shifting Sands: Juan Cole on Middle East Climate Woes (00:29:00)

When it comes to the Middle East and the environment, many of us think first about the area’s role in petroleum production. But climate change is hitting this desert region hard – making it both a geopolitical and a literal hotbed. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak with Juan Cole, a professor of history at the University of Michigan, a noted blogger, and a Middle East expert. We discuss the struggle for clean air and water in the face of extreme heat in Iraq, Iran and Egypt and contrast it with record flooding currently affecting Pakistan. We also take a look at the negative environmental impacts of desalinization, a staple in desert nations and a solution many are calling for globally as fresh water becomes increasingly scarce.

LOPATE AT LARGE: Ethan Chorin on BENGHAZI! (00:52:48)

Ten years after an attack on the US diplomatic mission in Benghazi killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, Ethan Chorin reveals Benghazi was a watershed moment in American history, one that helped create the world America lives in today: polarized, fearful, and dangerously unstable. According to Chorin, Benghazi is not a story contained in 13 hours, but a decades-long history beginning with the rise of Muammar Gaddafi, stretching through 9/11, the War on Terror, and the Arab Spring. Chorin draws on his own experience during the Benghazi attack, his expertise as a former diplomat and scholar of Libyan history, and new interviews with Libyan insiders, eyewitnesses, and key players like Hillary Clinton and Ben Rhodes. Join us when Chorin makes clear why Benghazi still matters so much ten years later and why we can’t afford to continue overlooking and misunderstanding it on this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large.

THE MIDDLE WAY SOCIETY: The Mind At Work with Mike Rose (00:41:35)

A fascinating discussion, with Mike Rose reminiscing with great warmth and appreciation of his mother’s skill and social intelligence in her work as a waitress in a series of restaurants. I’m not sure that I accept his premise that such skills are undervalued or unacknowledged, although it’s perhaps the case that they may not attract the monetary rewards they deserve, and may not be reflected in the social status attributed to service or manual workers.

It’s my experience that skilled ‘blue-collar’ artisans are generally highly regarded, so that people who cut great suits or restore ancient furniture may enjoy high status, as do actors, musicians or sportswomen whose intelligence lies elsewhere than in the intellectual domains. Skill, be it socio-emotional, embodied or physical, equates with intelligence in contemporary society. Indeed, it might be argued that intellectuals tend to get a bashing these days, and many are rather poorly rewarded for their efforts. Mike Rose is a research professor in the department of education of UCLA and the author of several books including Why School, Back to School and Possible Lives. We’re going to be talking about education and some of the themes explored in these books but we’ll be focusing in particular on his book The Mind at Work: Valuing the Intelligence of the American Worker which challenges the long-held notion that people who work with their hands make up a less intelligent class. Ron DeSantis appointee Jeffrey Moore resigns after a picture of him in a KKK uniform goes public. Republican Pennsylvania Gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano calls for 40 days of prayer and fasting to try to save his failing campaign against Democrat Josh Shapiro. ALAN WATTS: Stop Thinking about Life -1968 full lecture (00:22:56)

Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was a British philosopher, writer, and speaker, best known as an interpreter and populariser of Eastern philosophy for a Western audience. Born in Chislehurst, England, he moved to the United States in 1938 and began Zen training in New York. Pursuing a career, he attended Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, where he received a master’s degree in theology. Watts became an Episcopal priest in 1945, then left the ministry in 1950 and moved to California, where he joined the faculty of the American Academy of Asian Studies. Watts gained a large following in the San Francisco Bay Area while working as a volunteer programmer at KPFA, a Pacifica Radio station in Berkeley. Watts wrote more than 25 books and articles on subjects important to Eastern and Western religion, introducing the then-burgeoning youth culture to The Way of Zen (1957), one of the first bestselling books on Buddhism. In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), Watts proposed that Buddhism could be thought of as a form of psychotherapy and not a religion. He considered Nature, Man and Woman (1958) to be, “from a literary point of view—the best book I have ever written.” He also explored human consciousness, in the essay “The New Alchemy” (1958), and in the book The Joyous Cosmology (1962). Towards the end of his life, he divided his time between a houseboat in Sausalito and a cabin on Mount Tamalpais. Many of his books are now available in digital format and many of his recorded talks and lectures are available on the Internet. According to the critic Erik Davis, his “writings and recorded talks still shimmer with a profound and galvanizing lucidity.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 9/28/22 (00:54:57)

On the Show: Pennsylvania Republican Senate candidate Mehmet Oz is losing to Democratic candidate John Fetterman by 10 in a new poll. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton fled his house in a truck to avoid a subpoena. 61% of Republicans still believe that Joe Biden was not the legitimate winner of the 2020 election according to a new poll. Multiple 2022 Republican candidates wipe all mentions of Donald Trump from their websites after winning their respective primaries. Fox News propagandist Tucker Carlson calls hurricanes a “scam” as Hurricane Ian bears down on Florida. Donald Trump calls Florida Governor Ron DeSantis “fat,” “phony,” and “whiny.”  Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is privately calling Donald Trump a “moron.” Donald Trump sounds confused during a bizarre interview in which he does his “n-word” rant. Investors pull $140 million from Donald Trump’s failing social media platform Truth Social. Donald Trump wrongly assumed staffers of color at the White House were waiters, according to a new book. Voicemail caller asks how we find and select the lunatic Republicans that we have been interviewing.

THE CHILDREN’S HOUR: Banned Books (00:58:00)

This time on The Children’s Hour, our summer interns Julia Wolfe and Sophie Anderson-Haynie have co-written and produced a program about Banned Books. They teach us what that means, the history of banning books, and how it’s even possible in the era of digital reading. We also learn about something that’s being talked about a lot in the news, and is being used as a reason to ban books: Critical Race Theory. Julia and Sophie read us a book that is being banned in some schools because a few people think it teaches this college-level theory by telling the story the real-life Ruby Bridges. Listeners can decide for themselves. The book tells about an historic moment in American history through Ruby’s 6 year old eyes for a second grade level reader. The book was originally published in 2009 by Cartwheel Books, and today can be found as a Scholastic Reader! in many languages. Banned Books Week is celebrated every year the last full week of September. This year, that’s September 18 – 24, 2022. You can learn more about what children’s books are the top 10 banned children’s books of 2021, and why. For a limited time, American teenagers ages 13 to 21 can get a free, unlimited library membership to the Brooklyn Public Library to check out digital books, as part of their National Teen BPL Card program. Learn more and sign up by clicking here! We play an excellent mix of music in celebration of a diversity of writing and reading.

RADIO ART HOUR: Ricardo Iamuuri Robinson, Sadie Woods  (00:58:00)

This week tune in two Black American radio artists, Ricardo Iamuuri Robinson and Sadie Woods. First, we hear from Robinson, who writes, “‘BLACKBODY, WHITE NOISE<‘ is an experimental radio art composition. For an entire week I have collected sounds using two vacant cast iron cubes and sound reproduction technology. Each structure bears a single hole (a Blackbody) allowing sunlight to penetrate and radiate throughout the interior space. During the course of the residency I have recorded thermal conduction, movement and ambience. I manipulated the collected data to compose a sonic relationship with excerpts from LaVender Freddys ‘Sunscreen Conspiracy’ project. The title ‘Blackbody White Noise’ is inspired by Frantz Fanons highly acclaimed literary work, Black Skin, White Mask. This project has set out to reveal and translate a correlation between the life of the Sun and the struggle against forces determined to destroy it. This meditation will articulate a common narrative of conflict and leave it up to the listeners to reimagine a new future inspired by a new solar language. The Peoples Radio explores radio as a technology developed and pioneered by the U.S. military industrial complex as political warfare and public radio as a conduit for Black expressive culture and radical imagination. This broadcast is created from a variety of sources, including cultural media, ephemeral and symbolic sounds, political speeches like “Power Anywhere Where There’s People” by Fred Hampton, excerpts from Motown’s sister label Black Forum releases like “Black Spirits: Festival of New Black Poets in America,” and oral histories propelled through Black music. The Peoples Radio emphasizes resistance during times of social unrest in aims to recuperate and make legible repressed histories, reminding us of the political dimensions under the surface of Black life. Then tune in Woods and her “The Peoples Radio.” The work explores radio as a technology developed and pioneered by the U.S. military industrial complex as political warfare and public radio as a conduit for Black expressive culture and radical imagination. DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 9/26/22 (00:54:06)

On the Show: Italy shifts to the extreme right as the neo-fascist Brothers of Italy party wins the most votes in national elections, potentially making Giorgia Meloni its leaders. The House January 6 panel may unanimously refer Donald Trump for criminal prosecution. California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom absolutely crushes Ron DeSantis in recent interviews. Jared Kushner slams Ron DeSantis over his Martha’s Vineyard immigrant stunt, but it’s nothing other than an implicit defense of Donald Trump. Republican Senator John Barrasso pretends that telepathic document declassification might be real when asked about it by ABC’s George Stephanopoulos. Donald Trump’s latest rally in Wilmington, North Carolina was so outrageous, even right wing Drudge Report raised questions about dementia. Attendees at Donald Trump’s latest rally are scary, including one guy who defends neo-nazis. After the fiasco at last week’s Ohio rally, Trump’s rally security in North Carolina shut down people doing the Q-Anon salute. According to a woman who spoke at a Republican town hall, not bullying people is a form of Marxism. We’re getting dangerously close to 1.5 million YouTube subscribers on our main channel. Voicemail caller asks whether Joe Biden can telepathically reclassify the documents that Donald Trump telepathically declassified.

THE BRADCAST 9/23/22: Recounted: New evidence in GA Sec. of State cover-up’ Reagan’s big gift to Big Pharma (00:58:00)

‘BradCast’ Recounted: On today’s show, we’ve put together some of our favorite recent interviews that you may have missed. First up: The corporate media has not yet grasped the scope of a very serious breach of voting system security in multiple states. In the coordinated plot, shepherded by Trump attorney Sidney Powell, Republican election officials and Trump MAGA supporters unlawfully breached, copied and distributed election systems software in GA, MI, CO, and potentially other states. Michigan and Colorado officials have launched serious criminal probes into the security breaches, but Georgia’s Republican Sec. of State Brad Raffensperger has failed to investigate the breach in Coffee County, GA. Election integrity expert MARILYN MARKS of the nonpartisan Coalition for Good Governance explains the new evidence, revealed by her own lawsuit against the state, showing that the GOP election officials appear to have lied under oath, while Raffensperger’s office is apparently trying to cover it all up. Then: BradBlog legal analyst ERNEST A. CANNING explains the history of why Americans pay far more for prescription drugs than the rest of the developed world thanks to a ‘gift’ to the industry by Pres. Ronald Reagan, the explosion of patent abuse by Big Pharma, and what can be done to repair the system. Canning also offers brighter news on a landmark effort in the state of California to cheaply manufacture live-saving insulin to bypass Big Pharma’s outrageous price gouging.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 9/23/22 (00:58:00)

Part 1:

We talk with Scott Braddock about the DeSantis stunt, and how he and Abbott of Texas compare in their eagerness to look tough. Republicans are generally doing poorly in polling among women under 45. In Texas, there is no longer straight ticket voting, and the Lt. Governor is concerned about reelection.

Part 2:

Harold Meyerson and Bill Curry discuss the corruption case brought by NY State’s Letitia James against Trump, his children, and the Trump organization. We also discuss the level of corruption overall: fraud in Medicaid, other big corruption. Most donors are powerful and wealthy. We also talk about the Trump judges, and how this is affecting the outcomes of various ways to rein him in. There has been a degradation of justice.

MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR: Ecological Spirituality & The Animate Everything with Sophie Strand  (00:59:00)

Sophie Strand is a brilliant new voice on the scene. Sophie Strand is a poet and writer who focuses on the intersection of spirituality, mythology, storytelling, and ecology. But it would probably be more authentic to call her a neo-troubadour animist. Sophie is the author of Love Song to a Blue God, and The Flowering Wand: Rewilding the Sacred Masculine which comes out in November.

LAW AND DISORDER (00:57:03)

Chris Hedges: Social Change And Democracy 2022

You can’t have organized activity for social change without democracy. Social change and democracy are bound up with one another. But America is not a democracy. This is by design. It was never intended to be. The founding fathers ” there were no founding mothers – wrote a document 245 years ago in Philadelphia that excluded more Americans than it included.

The State of Labor Unions And Recent Worker Strikes

For decades now only about 11% of workers in America have been members of unions, whereas previously more than 35% were union members. Various pieces of pro-management legislation and court opinions caused this diminution in union membership and, as a consequence, a weakening of the rights of American workers. But in recent years, as a result of militant fight back efforts by exploited workers in many industries, unions have once again been having some success in organizing efforts at various workplaces, like Amazon, Starbucks, Apple, and Trader Joes.

THE BRADCAST 9/22/22: The ‘Promise of the Rule of Law’; Accountability for Trump, Mike Lindell and Ginni Thomas (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: It’s been a bad week for disgraced former President Donald Trump. First the New York Attorney General filed a civil lawsuit against him and his adult children for bank, tax, and insurance fraud. Then the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously rebuked Trump’s numerous false claims about classified government documents he stole from the White House, and debunked Trump’s bonkers assertion that he could declassify documents with his mind. A federal court rejected MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell’s attempt to dismiss a massive defamation lawsuit filed against him by an electronic voting system manufacturer. Lindell has now sued the Justice Department for the return of his cell phone in a different case, revealing that he is under criminal investigation in a voting system security breach in Colorado. Ginni Thomas – – far-right Republican activist, 2020 election denier, and wife of far-right Republican activist Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas – – has agreed to give testimony to the bipartisan U.S. House Select Committee investigating the January 6 insurrection and her involvement in Trump’s multiple failed attempts to steal the election. At a swearing-in ceremony for 200 new American citizens, US Attorney General Merrick Garland delivered moving remarks detailing his family’s escape from the Holocaust to America and the ‘promise’ and protection of equal justice under the law, at a time when he faces a momentous decision on whether or not to indict a former U.S. President for the first time in history. KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: Nationalize Railroads While There are Still Assets (00:59:32)

A crippling rail strike seems to have been averted. Barely. You and I may think of the railroads as ways to move freight, but as our guest today observes: The railroad companies have been Wall Streets plaything throughout their half-century decline. On this show, The New Republics Timothy Noah argues its time to nationalize the rails, as is the federal highway system. Both really are public utilities and should be regulated as such. Listen and learn how the current arrangement has worsened inflation.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN (0059:30)

Segment One

We talk with John Nichols about the Republican strategy of ignoring election rules and bypassing voters and the will of people. Rules are changed, or just ignored, in order to push the Republican agenda. We discuss the 17th Amendment. Democracy should be expanded, not circumscribed by party policy.

Segment Two

We talk with Kathryn Joyce, an investigative reporter at Salon, and the author of two books, about school privatization in Arizona. Arizona’s school privatization battle heats up: Will the voters get to decide? Republicans’ massive school voucher plan may yet be defeated (again) ” but the challenge is stiffer this time.

COUNTERSPIN: Alicia Bell & Collette Watson on media reparations (00:28:00)

If US news media never used the terms “wake-up call” or “racial reckoning” again, with regard to the latest instance of institutional white supremacy brought to light, that would be fine.

LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: Kim Stanley Robinson: Writing the Future Story People Want (00:28:00)

Can a novel become a catalyst to help us address impending climate disaster? That’s one question posed by the legendary Kim Stanley Robinson, in his best-selling novel The Ministry for the Future, which begins with millions of Indians dying from temperatures that send people cramming into lakes to cool off ” where they literally poach to death. The book has been praised by everyone from Barack Obama to the Dalai Lama and seems to be turning even bureaucrats and bankers’ heads. In his work, Robinson creates space for the possibility of change, possible worlds of equity, not only for survival but for justice and a livable future. Call it speculative fiction, sci-fi, even cli-fi, The Ministry for the Future is a blueprint for transformation and pushes us to think not just about how close to the end we might be. If 20 million people in India died in a heatwave today would that be enough to force humanity to act? Join Laura and Stan for this conversation on how we can all imagine change and work to preserve our planet. LOPATE AT LARGE: Richard Barone on Music + Revolution: Greenwich Village in the 1960s (00:51:33)

Music + Revolution: Greenwich Village in the 1960s, is a narrative appreciation of the Greenwich Village music scene of that decade — in particular the glorious collision of music and message that created the protest song movement. Even before the Beatnik Riots of 1961, New York City’s Greenwich Village was the epicenter of revolutionary movements in American music and culture. But, in the early 1960s and throughout the decade, a new wave of writers and performers inspired by the folk music revival of the 1950s created socially aware and deeply personal songs that spoke to a generation like never before. Join us when Richard Barone examines his book Music + Revolution: Greenwich Village in the 1960s on this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Diamond As Big As The Ritz by F. Scott Fitzgerald pt. 2 (00:35:35)

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novella, though not as famous as his novel The Great Gatsby, shares a similar theme in a fantastical tale that was Fitzgerald’s favorite. “The Diamond As Big As The Ritz” is a spectacularly detailed, cutting critique of social snobbery, extreme wealth and pathological greed.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Jungle by Upton Sinclair – ch. 31 (00:48:35)

It is the end of the 19th century. Like thousands of others, the Rudkus family has emigrated from Lithuania to America in search of a better life. As they settle into the Packingtown neighborhood of Chicago, they find their dreams are unlikely to be realized. In fact, just the opposite is quite likely to occur. The family, naïve to the ways of Chicago, quickly falls prey to con men and makes a series of bad decisions that lead them into wretched poverty and terrible living conditions. All are forced to find jobs in dismal working conditions for their very survival. The main character Jurgis, broken and discouraged, eventually finds solace in the American Socialist movement. This novel was written during a period in American history when “Trusts” were formed by multiple corporations to establish monopolies that stifled competition and fixed prices. Unthinkable working conditions and unfair business practices were the norm. The Jungle’s author, Upton Sinclair, was an ardent Socialist of the time. Sinclair was commissioned by the “Appeal To Reason”, a Socialist journal of the period, to write a fictional expose on the working conditions of the immigrant laborers in the meat packing industry in Chicago. Going undercover, Sinclair spent seven weeks inside the meatpacking plants gathering details for his novel. (Summary by Tom Weiss)

This week tune in M’Iou Zahner Ollswang’s “Mosquitos,” and Colin Black’s “Residue.” Both works use natural sounds. “Mosquitos” is from the Tellus #11 cassette “The Sound of Radio.” The Australian artist Black writes about his “Residue,” “Unlike some of my previous works, I think of Residue” as a musical work inspired by what Luc Ferrari has termed anecdotal music, where I use a source/context-driven handling of recorded sounds as an element of the overall musical composition. I think of these concrete sounds (that are carefully selected for this musical composition), just like one would choose musical notes for a traditional score that creates deftly constructed cadences, counterpoint, motivic and rhythmic development, textures and colours after all, music is sound and all sound is music.

THE BRADCAST 9/16/22: Legal analyst Ernest Canning on Big Pharma, CA manufacturing insulin (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Americans are still paying the price for Ronald Reagan’s 1987 Executive Order that gave away the taxpayer store to Big Pharma. The CDC recommends that Americans get newly reformulated, bivalent COVID vaccine booster shots before Halloween to lower the risk of infection, hospitalization and long COVID. Updated vaccines are necessary because, despite billions of dollars in taxpayer funding to develop them, private pharmaceutical giants refuse to give up their patent rights to make the vaccines available to the world, giving ample opportunity for new variants to emerge, extending the pandemic and in turn delivering more profits to Big Pharma. ERNEST A. CANNING, legal analyst at The BRAD BLOG, explains how we got here: from Reagan’s 1987 ‘gift’ to wildly profitable pharmaceutical companies and how it enabled the explosion of patent abuse by Big Pharma, to why there are no easy fixes, and what can be done to repair the system. Canning also offers brighter news on a landmark effort in the state of California to cheaply manufacture live-saving insulin to bypass Big Pharma’s outrageous prices. Also today: new developments in the broadening criminal conspiracy investigation by Fulton County, GA District Attorney Fani Willis into Donald Trump’s multi-pronged, failed efforts to steal the 2020 Presidential election. The founder and CEO of outdoor gear brand Patagonia announced he has donated the $3 billion for-profit company with the mandate that all of its profits go to combat the climate crisis.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Jungle by Upton Sinclair – ch. 29 (00:24:54)

ALAN WATTS: Stop Feeling Lost by Doing This (00:15:17)

If there is one simple question that bothers us all as human beings, it is : Why are we living ? It is a burden on our shoulders, and we cannot think about it without going depressed or becoming sad, because simply we can’t answer it. We got blocked. In this lecture, Alan Watts talks about the game of life, how the answer of that question is : To play. To simply not take it seriously, to stay within the flow of life without having to be very strict and rigid about it. We have to take it as if it was a game. Because if we take it seriously, we will be forced to think scientifically, to predict the future, and be aware that any false move, would lead us to a fatal death, which is not the case.

RADIO ART HOUR: The Beatles, NeuroTransmitter (00:56:22)

Today tune in for radio art from The Beatles, and NeuroTransmitter. On The Beatles “I Am The Walrus,” John Lennon instructs Ringo Starr to tune in an AM radio at the end of the song. Listen closely, and you will hear a BBC production of Shakespeares “The Tragedy of King Lear.” The broadcast was at the point of Act IV, Scene VI, where the steward Oswald is killed. Then tune in two works from the duo NeuroTransmitter, Angel Nevarez and Valerie Tevere. First, hear their “Radio Film Studies Vol.1: made for Wave Farm’s show “Tune (In))) Brooklyn.” Then hear “12 Miles Out,” realized in 2005 in conjunction with the exhibition “Airborne” at the New Museum for Contemporary Art in New York co-organized by Wave Farm (then known as free103point9). The work was exhibited for many years as an installation rather than as a piece made solely for radio broadcast. “12 Miles Out” is an example of radio art that addresses radio as content, as material, and as a space; the piece is also a kind of archive of pirate radio, an archive within the archive. Here is neuroTransmitters description of the piece: ’12 Miles Out’ is a visual and sound installation that merges analog radio technology and line drawing. This work continues neuroTransmitters exploration of offshore pirate radio practice prevalent in Europe in the 1960s and 1970s, and in the US a decade later. Pirate radio is a tactic that undermines corporate media domination, and occupies the privatized space of radio bandwidth for noncommercial interests. ’12 Miles Out’ specifically references Radio Caroline, one of the most infamous offshore radio ships. Installed, the drawing represents a Radio Caroline ship circa 1964, setting the scene for the radio broadcast. The audio composition mixes live and ambient sound recordings of an ocean voyage neuroTransmitter took out into international waters; archival material from Radio Caroline broadcasts; and audio that references offshore pirate radio and the shifts in territorial boundaries that govern the sea. Multiple radios within the exhibition space are be tuned to the project’s transmission frequency, or viewers can bring their own radios in order to listen to the work. Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2019/2020, Karen Werner.

THE BRADCAST 9/9/22: Structural Court Reform and ‘Lady Justice’ (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The Justice Department offered a compromise to the unprecedented, absurd, unworkable order by Trump-appointed Judge Aileen Cannon blocking the DOJ’s criminal investigation into documents, some highly classified, that Donald Trump stole from the White House, until a court-appointed Special Master can examine the materials for potential attorney-client or executive privilege conflicts. (Trump is no longer the Executive and is not entitled to any such privilege.) If Judge Cannon accepts the DOJ’s offer, it would allow a critical national security damage assessment to continue. Cannon’s unworkable order is the latest in a flood of ridiculous rulings by corrupt, rightwing, Federal Society-approved judges – – and the packed-and-stolen rightwing U.S. Supreme Court majority – – that underscore the brokenness of our federal judicial system. DAHLIA LITHWICK, legal analyst at Slate and MSNBC, and author of the new book, ‘LADY JUSTICE: Women, the Law, and the Battle to Save America,’ explains why the nation cannot litigate itself out of corrupted rulings by corrupted courts, and why structural reforms are desperately needed to reform the federal judiciary. Lithwick delves into specific steps to repair the judiciary, how to make it happen, and her brand-new book telling the stories of ‘extraordinary women lawyers’ who ‘changed the world in the Trump era.’ Also today: New ad by the Republican ‘Never Trumpers’ of the Lincoln Project exposes how Trump’s Save America PAC is little more than a ‘suckers’ game’ bilking his supporters, and they hilariously respond to Trump’s impotent threat to sue. A federal judge scathingly dismissed Trump’s bonkers lawsuit against Hillary Clinton and former FBI and DOJ officials claiming a ‘conspiracy’ against him.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 9/9/22 (00:58:00)

Part 1:

We talk about the political landscape in Texas. O’Rourke may have a chance at beating Abbott for the governorship. Women are 70% of the newly registered voters. Abbott has identified himself as a culture warrior, rather than a pro-business champion. Medical PREP is no longer necessarily covered by employer insurance. This may have implications for other drugs or therapies: screening, preventive vaccinations, etc.

Part 2:

We talk with Robert Hennelly and Bill Curry about the unveiling of the Obama portraits at the White House, something NOT done during Trump’s presidency. Many election deniers are on the ballots of multiple states. We discuss the failures of Democratic leaders: limited ACA, etc. Seems to indicate that Democrats are unwilling to go against their corporate donors.

THE BRADCAST 9/8/22 (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Britain’s longest reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, has died at age 96 after a 70-year reign. Record heat continues to broil California. New poll finds a large majority of Americans regard Trump’s MAGA movement as a threat to the nation’s democratic foundations, but few Republicans agree. Former Trump aide and convicted federal criminal Steve Bannon was indicted in New York on state charges of money laundering, conspiracy and fraud for allegedly defrauding donors and siphoning funds from the ‘We Build the Wall’ organization. The federal grand jury investigating the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the US Capitol has reportedly widened its probe to include Trump’s scammy Save America PAC over misuse of funds, and has subpoenaed his personal aide, who worked at both the White House and Mar-a-Lago. CNN reports on GOP leaders in Wayne County, MI (Detroit) getting caught on tape teaching MAGA pollworkers how to break election rules on behalf of Republicans. Michigan’s Supreme Court ruled that a statewide initiative for a state Constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights has successfully qualified for the November 2022 ballot, ending an attempt by Republicans to block it. KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: White Supremacy and a Place You’ve Never Been (00:59:50)

The new book is Imagining the Heartland; White Supremacy and the American Midwest and it’s about the powerful roots of today’s angry violence against The Others. On this show anthropologist authors Britt Halvorson and Joshua Reno look at the use of a mythic narrative of bucolic peaceful home and hearth, how things used to be but really never were. The real Americans versus the coastal elites, seeing multiculturalism as an existential threat. If we want to address white supremacy, we need to understand this imaginary foundation.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 9/10/22 (00:58:59)

Segment One

We begin with David Dayen to talk about the proliferation of “dollar stores” in the United States. There are more than 35,000 dollar stores in the country, and they all take advantage of the increase in the number of people who are ‘downscaling’ their purchases. Where cheap and shoddy goods are a replacement for quality. This is part of a trend which includes ‘minute clinics’, and similar kinds of establishments. This is an example of the stratification of wealth and the proliferation of private equity acquisitions that are consuming huge parts of the American economy.

Segment Two

We then catch up with Jesse Eisinger to discuss how wealthy people avoid paying taxes. There are many strategies, but the outcome is the same; the very wealthy pay far less than their fair share of taxes. This undermines function of government as well as society.

LOPATE AT LARGE: Freedomland (00:49:51)

In Freedomland, Annemarie H. Sammartino tells Co-op City’s story from the perspectives of those who built it and of the ordinary people who made their homes in this monument to imperfect liberal ideals of economic and social justice. Located on the grounds of the former Freedomland amusement park on the northeastern edge of the Bronx, Co-op City’s 35 towers and 236 townhouses have been home to hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and is an icon visible to all traveling on the east coast corridor. In 1965, Co-op City was planned as the largest middle-class housing development in the United States. It was intended as a solution to the problem of affordable housing in America’s largest city. While Co-op City first appeared to be a huge success story for integrated, middle-class housing, tensions would lead its residents to organize the largest rent strike in American history. Join us when Annemarie H. Sammartino tells Co-op City’s story from the perspectives of those who built it and of the ordinary people who made their homes in this monument to imperfect liberal ideals of economic and social justice on this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Jungle by Upton Sinclair – ch. 26 (00:44:51)

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 9/8/22 (00:54:47)

On the Show: President Joe Biden is leading failed former President Donald Trump by 6 points in a hypothetical 2024 matchup in the latest Yahoo News-YouGov poll. Democrats continue gaining ground on Republicans in both the House and Senate when looking at 2022 midterm election polling. 4 out of 5 Republican candidates running for the New Hampshire 1st District House seat say they would immediately impeach President Joe Biden if elected. Donald Trump’s “special master” is incredibly shady and raises major red flags about Judge Aileen Cannon, who made the decision. Former Trump propagandist Steve Bannon will surrender to authorities today and face new indictments against him for his role in the “cash for border wall” scam. Georgia Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker is again completely incoherent at a recent rally, making no sense whatsoever while trying to speak. A visibly disoriented Sarah Palin struggles to cogently explain why she lost her House race just weeks ago. Donald Trump appears on NDTV, an Indian television channel, alongside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to make absurd claims, including that the FBI planted evidence against him, and that the US is “going to hell.” The new supposed reason that Donald Trump wanted the stolen documents to be at his house is very disturbing. The Eggman leaves a voicemail to explain that he wears a beard and drives a pickup truck as a form of camouflage as a liberal Jewish man in his home area of western New York state.

THE POSITIVE MIND: What happens when “that” feeling goes? (00:58:00)

Falling out of love is a heartbreaking feeling. The expansiveness. warmth, and joy of being with your beloved is just gone. It may have happened suddenly or overtime, but there is no doubt that ‘the loving feeling” is gone. This week Kevin and Niseema explore some of the reasons why what used be a “tuning in” to our partner, suddenly turns into a “tuning out.” Expectations, lack of relationship skills, stress, personal history, our own body, etc., can turn that loving feeling into irritability and loneliness. If love is the antidote to loneliness, then what may be the antidote to the “loss” of love?

INSIDE THE FBI: Health Care Fraud (00:14:51)

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, nearly $12,000 per person was spent in 2019 on health care costs. That includes both what people paid out of pocket and what insurance companies paid.   But when you get sick and go to the doctor, you may not always be aware of how much the care you’re receiving really costs or what the billing processes look like after you leave your appointment. There’s actually a lot to it—and a lot of opportunities for dishonest people to commit fraud. This is where the FBI comes in, because while health care fraud may seem victimless, it actually hurts everyone.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 9/6/22 (00:54:47)

On the Show: Despite some positive polling numbers in select races, absolutely radical extremist Republicans are still leading in many races, including Greg Abbott, Brian Kemp, and others. A supposed “assassination attempt” of Argentina’s Vice President Cristina Kirchner is “caught” on video, and the entire thing stinks to high heaven. President Joe Biden crushes a heckler and slams “Trumpies” during a recent speech in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Failed former President Donald Trump delivers a completely unhinged speech in which he calls Joe Biden the enemy of the state, and says that John Fetterman is on hard drugs with absolutely no evidence for the claim. Rallygoers are interviewed at Donald Trump’s Pennsylvania rally and it’s as scary as ever. Donald Trump appears to turn on Fox News, offering CNN help to crush Fox. Former Trump Attorney General William Barr absolutely crushes Trump on the topic of classified documents “at a country club.” Propagandist Steve Bannon claims that the Biden administration is trying to “assassinate people.” Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones has a complete meltdown during an interview with Channel 5, claiming that he killed the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting. Voicemail caller is very confused about the terms Hispanic vs Spanish.

ECONOMIC UPDATE: What is Communism? (00:29:00)

This program covers the origins, evolution, and current significance of “communism.” After a brief history of communism as a utopian ideal of community, we treat Marx’s presentation in the Communist Manifesto, and then communism’s subordination to “socialism” to World War 1. That War changed everything. It split socialists everywhere into a Socialist Party and a Communist Party with key differences but also commonalities. When most European communist parties collapsed, socialism once again became the only major systemic left position. Yet the utopian longings expressed by communism left many on the left dissatisfied with modern socialisms. They searched for a possible solution, a new kind of communism located in workplaces organized as democratic, worker-coop.

Today tune in a radio tale with music by Esther Sibiude and Gobby, narrated by Jett Strauss called “Crisis Baby Crisis” and two short works from 1985 on the Tellus cassette “The Sound of Radio” by Rick Harris, and by Edward Haber. First, “Crisis Baby Crisis” tells the tale of a young and wealthy couple moving from one metropole to the other in the attempt to escape the political and ecological crises that each new place confronts them with. Detached, they observe the world around them, without ever feeling rooted, and move whenever things get hard. Then tune in the short work from Rick Harris called Is This Real,” and Edward Haber’s funny “Abbott and Costello Meet the Anti-Christ.”

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Jungle by Upton Sinclair – ch. 23 (00:27:19)

THE BRADCAST 9/2/22: Tom Bonier of TargetSmart on the surprising post-‘Roe’ election landscape (00:57:30)

Encore: original airdate 8/24/2022. On today’s ‘BradCast’: First up, we have noteworthy results in primaries and runoffs in New York, Florida, and Oklahoma, which delivered good and bad news for both progressives and Democrats. The biggest news was in a US House special election in upstate New York, where Democratic candidate Pat Ryan defeated Republican Marc Molinaro in a very swingy ‘swing district’. The results in that ‘bellwether’ race and recent contests around the country show Democrats outperforming pundit expectations, upending the conventional wisdom of Republicans and corporate media that the 2022 midterm elections would bring a ‘red wave’. Since the GOP’s stolen and packed U.S. Supreme Court in its ‘Dobbs’ decision overturned women’s privacy rights and reproductive freedoms, every special election has shown Democrats improving on their 2020 voter turnout. TOM BONIER, CEO of TargetSmart, a Democratic data firm, explains the remarkable shifts in voter turnout over the past few weeks since Kansas voters stunningly crushed a ballot initiative to amend the state constitution to ban abortion altogether. Bonier discusses several big data trends in areas like voter registration that show growing voter registrations and engagement for Democrats, even in historically ‘red’ districts in battleground states, in the post-‘Roe’ election landscape. Bonier warns that ‘conventional wisdom’ prognostications about this year’s midterm elections are based on historical data, which is proving increasingly unreliable in these unconventional times. He cautions that it will be ‘difficult’ for Democrats to hold on to majorities in both houses of Congress, but data show it is increasingly possible, if pro-democracy voters ‘fight for every vote.’

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 9/2/22 (00:58:30)

Part 1: Scott Braddock

We discuss the student loan forgiveness that Biden announced. Much of the problem is that tuition costs have risen dramatically, with less funding coming from states. Gov Abbott is campaigning in Texas, and claims that raising the age to buy automatic weapons is “unconstitutional” (bogus). Abbot has not provided any leadership on other issues: infrastructure in Texas is sadly lacking.

Part 2: Bill Curry and Robert Hockett

We discuss the SCOTUS judges. The court is dominated by Federalist Society judges, and has moved to the far right. We discuss the Barre Seid donation of $1.6 B to Leonard Leo, who will likely use it to create more rightward influence. We also discuss Lindsay Graham’s warmongering on behalf of Trump.

THE BRADCAST 9/1/22: Media critic Dan Froomkin of Press Watch on corporate media failures (00:57:30)

Encore: Original airdate 8/19/2022. On today’s ‘BradCast’: The U.S. corporate media is still cowed by the radical Right, and still failing in its constitutional mandate to inform and educate the electorate. As we’ve long argued, it’s a mistake to buy into the political punditry of Conventional Wisdom that assumes Democrats will lose big in midterm elections in November. While it’s still an uphill climb, new polling data suggests that these are decidedly UN-conventional times, when even a die-hard Republican like Maryland’s Gov. Larry Hogan dismisses the Trump-endorsed GOP gubernatorial nominee, Dan Cox, as ‘not mentally stable.’ Trump’s ever-worsening legal woes may also be harming GOP odds this election – – eighteen former top Trump Administration officials call Trump’s claims that he issued a ‘standing order’ to declassify any documents he stole from the White House as ‘nonsense’ and ‘ludicrous.’ Yet major media outlets have avoided informing the public that, regardless of classification status, Trump unlawfully STOLE the documents. Why is corporate media afraid to use such plain, accurate descriptions? Media critic and former corporate media ‘insider’ DAN FROOMKIN explains why, and discusses CNN’s cancellation of ‘Reliable Sources’, the last remaining legitimate media criticism program on cable or broadcast TV news. Froomkin also delves into the major media outlets’ recent gobsmacking, misleading, and inaccurate headlines, their fealty to false ‘both sides’ framing, and much more. Plus: a long-overdue and much-needed new ditty from musical satirist Randy Rainbow…

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: The Folly of Quantifying Education (00:59:28)

As another school year kicks off, skepticism about quantifying is appropriate. That measure is command and control from the top down bureaucrats. But much of the best results of public education can’t be seen but come from democratizing schools, welcoming input from those who best know what theyre doing. On this show author Josh Beach discusses his new books: Can We Measure What Matters Most, Why Educational Accountability Metrics Lower Student Learning and Demoralize Teachers, and The Myths of Measurement and Meritocracy Why Accountability Metrics in Higher Education are Unfair and Increase Inequality. He says for the best education, teachers need flexibility. It’s another case where more democracy yields better decisions.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 9/3/22 (00:59:30)

Segment One
We begin with Andy Kroll of Propublica and we discuss Barne Seid’s historic ‘gift’ to the Federalist Society of $1.6 billion to promote reactionary and originalist ideas. The goal is to eliminate the “administrative state”.
Segment Two
We then speak with Paul Glastris of the Washington Monthly, about college rankings. How were these developed, who developed them, and for what purpose. There are problems with the US News and World Report rankings, so the Washington Monthly has developed different criteria from those currently used (wealth, exclusivity, prestige’).
Instead, the WM uses as its basic criteria of how a school is an engine of upward mobility, funds scholars and scholarship that fuels innovation, encourages civic participation, and the salaries its graduates earn 10 years out, among others.

TUC RADIO: Helen Caldicott and Michael Madsen: Onkalo and the Dangers from Nuclear Power Plants

 (00:29:00)

As people using and promoting solar power we often jokingly said that we prefer our nuclear reactor in the sun at a safe 93 million mile distance. As humans have mastered one power of the universe and split the atom, the discovery has outstripped human ability to understand the consequences. We have copied the nuclear heating mechanism of the sun in 440 nuclear power plants along coastlines and rivers of the world and are barely aware of the danger they cause way beyond their place and time of use. The physician and anti nuclear campaigner Helen Caldicott says that vast amounts of highly toxic radioactive waste are generated every day in Nuclear Power Plants. The 440 nuclear power reactors in the world are operating in 32 countries plus Taiwan. And about 55power reactors are currently being constructed in 15countries.

LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: What if a different part of the women’s movement had gained more attention?  (00:28:00)

In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, imperiling all women’s freedoms, and creating a new pipeline to prison for the vulnerable just as the world is learning how counterproductive most incarceration – solutions are. Today’s guests argue that things could have been very different. If the white dominated choice movement had paid closer attention to all women’s choices, or lack thereof; If anti-violence advocates had rejected criminalization and incarceration as a solution to the violence in women’s lives. Things could have been different, our guests argue, if a different part of the US women’s movement had gained more attention – attention it is beginning to get now. There has always been such a movement, they know, because they were there. ALAN WATTS: How to Enjoy Life (00:05:44)

Buddhist teacher Watts reflects on life. Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was a British writer and lecturer who interpreted and popularized Eastern philosophy and religion for a Western audience. He considered Nature, Man, and Woman (1958) to be, “from a literary point of view—the best book I have ever written.” He also explored human consciousness and psychedelics in the essay “The New Alchemy” (1958) and in the book The Joyous Cosmology (1962).

WINGS #20-22 Apostasy Is a Women’s Issue (00:28:50)

In a recent edition of the Australian program Accent of Women, host Jiselle Hanna very cautiously takes on the topic of apostasy – the act of changing or abandoning one’s religion – with her guest Sadia Hameed. Apostasy is not about any one religion. Sadia is an ex-Muslim; Jiselle is an ex-Coptic Christian living in Australia. She sees the risk that criticizing excesses in Islam encourages racism against Muslims, yet finds the right to stand against religious authorities to be essential for both feminism and labour.

A new report claims that the Department of Justice will wait until after the 2022 election to indict Donald Trump, but the short amount of time remaining until the election suggests this would be by necessity rather than by choice. Donald Trump’s lawyer Alina Habba shrugs off possible espionage charges against Trump as “mundane.” Donald Trump is interviewed after the release of incriminating photos from Mar-a-Lago and instantly implodes on Real America’s Voice. Donald Trump’s former National Security Adviser John Bolton and his former lawyer Michael Cohen both say Trump likely has more documents or copies of documents at other properties.
