ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Redefining Denial: It’s Not Complicated, It’s Just Hard (00:30:00)

On this show we are redefining denial to determine if it’s complicated or just hard. Raise your hand if you’ve gotten stuck in a procrastination loop because to change, let go, and adopt a new behavior is just hard. So hard it feels impossible! Life doesn’t have to be complicated to be hard. And reducing your options to go or don’t go doesn’t limit your possibilities. Varying degrees and options can sometimes provide too many hiding places for procrastination and denial. Let’s lay it all out in the open and be honest with ourselves, what is preventing you from moving forward? Whether it’s to obtain new skills, build stronger relationships, better your situation, or just open yourself up to what life has in store for you.

Paul and Cheryl Reisler spend the hour with our Kids Crew sharing songs, and giving us a mini demonstration of how they work inside schools. We learn about rhythm and exploration of our ideas. We hear examples of Kid Pan Alley songs from a handful of the many schools the organization has worked with over their many decades. This episode was produced by Executive Producer Katie Stone with help from Senior Producer Christina Stella and Education Director Lorraine Archibald. LITERATURE ALOUD: The Iron Heel by Jack London – Chapter 2 Challenges (00:27:41)

Published in 1908, this is a novel about a socialist revolution that was crushed for years by an oligarchy of wealth before ultimately reviving and building a more just and compassionate world. Portrayed as an illicit revolutionary journal written by Avis Everhard, London chooses a woman to narrate the great need for social justice, the progress of the revolution, its rationale and her sometimes starry-eyed love for the main character Ernest Everhard. Written after London was jailed for participating in a jobs march, this short and action-packed novel is London’s most detailed outline of his socialist views and the logic of a socialist revolution. Part political novel, part dystopian fiction, part speculative fiction, The Iron Heel also includes historically factual footnotes making it a unique textual hybrid.

ECONOMIC UPDATE: A Critique of Government Spending (00:29:00)

In this weeks Economic Update, Professor Richard Wolff devotes the program to understanding government spending, specifically how it shapes the larger society. We will focus on two questions 1) What is the government spending on? and 2) How is that money going to be used, and who benefits? If government spending only flows to capitalist corporations, they will use it to reproduce capitalism including its inequalities and injustices. This is a crucial impact of government spending but is rarely examined. The alternative – spending on worker coops – is explained and explored as a better alternative.

THOM HARTMANN Best of 1 Hour: Will This Summer Bring Cat 6 Hurricanes???? (00:58:00)

SCOTUS in on the Coup and Trying to End American Democracy? Are Jack Smith’s odds for holding Trump accountable to “we the people” sinking? Climate change is dictating that we need a cat 6 for hurricanes just in time for the most active season on record. Not only do right-wingers have a plan to turn the fed over to Trump….but wait….there’s more. Crazy Alert! Who else is disgusted that Trump’s VP favorite is boasting that she shot her puppy to death – instead of training it or finding it another home? Does that show she is a tough decision maker or a heartless sociopath?

SPIRIT IN ACTION: Feeding A Starving Gaza – The Freedom Flotilla  (00:55:00)

Like so many witnessing the immense suffering in Gaza, Cassandra Dixon wanted to do something to help the situation. Cassandra has made numerous visits to Palestine and has come to know many people there as personal friends, so she strongly felt the call to join the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza, carrying thousands of tons of humanitarian aid for the starving people of Gaza. At home in the Madison, WI, area, Cassandra does carpentry and home repair, leaving herself the time and freedom to annually spend a month or more in Palestine. Still, Cassandra needs and deserves our support, including through the GoFundMe (https://gofund.me/d028129b) to support Cassandra’s participation in the flotilla. Cassandra is active with the Madison-Rafah Sister City Project and is a supporter of Palestine Partners, supporting women in the Hebron Craft Cooperative. One of the projects being advanced and fundraised by the Madison-Rafah Sister City Project is the fundraiser for Middle East Children’s Alliance. At the time this interview with Cassandra Dixon was recorded, Cassandra was just a few hours from her departure from Madison, and the flotilla has since docked in Turkey, poised to continue on to Gaza.

On the Show: The US fertility rate drops to its lowest in a century, and we discuss the implications of the declining birth rate on the environment, economy, and foreign policy. William Barr, Donald Trump’s former Attorney General, appears to accidentally admit that Donald Trump regularly floated the idea of assassinating people he didn’t like. A desperate Donald Trump is now begging Ron DeSantis for help wooing some of DeSantis’ donors. Christina Bobb, Donald Trump’s former “election integrity” lawyer, has been indicted for alleged election crimes. Increasingly panicking about Robert F. Kennedy Jr, Donald Trump explodes in a late-night rant about him being a “Democratic plant.” A haggard-looking Donald Trump says he’s missing Melania Trump’s birthday because of a “rigged trial” against him. Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN April 27, 2024 (00:59:00)

Segment One

We begin the show with Bill Curry and Laura Jedeed. Bill Curry is a lawyer, former candidate for governor in Connecticut, worked in the Clinton White House, and a leader in the nuclear freeze movement. Laura Jedeed is a US Veteran and journalist who reports on right-wing factions in the United States. We also discuss the upcoming elections and the kinds of candidates running. Particularly, we discuss the senate campaign in Nebraska. Osborn, a union organizer and leader, is a candidate running as an Independent, challenging a Republican. No Democratic candidates are running. We close our conversation with Speaker Johnsons visit to Columbia University. Columbia has been the epicenter of the growing national protests against the ongoing genocide in Gaza, as the students are demanding a cease fire. The University president asked for police intervention in the protests. Considered by many as a mistake that will only inflame the situation. Johnson’s presence is not helpful. His remarks, chastising the students, were not helpful, and minimized the sentiments on both sides: pro-Israeli and pro-Gaza demonstrators.

Segment Two

We then catch up with We talk with Elliot Haspel, a child and family policy expert. We discuss the takeover of childcare by private equity firms. This is now an industry, that is by its nature, not likely to be profitable. However, private equity firms are using various tools to gain from it. They acquire small child care facilities, then “strip and flip” them, and then discard them after a few years. In the meantime, parents are at their mercy: cost cutting approaches mean fewer and/or less qualified teachers, low wages for employees, poor facilities, skimping on supplies such as food, toys, or even paper. The customer base is usually upper middle class, because poorer parents cannot afford the cost. We talk about alternatives that may be possible.

COUNTERSPIN: Baher Azmy/Abu Ghraib lawsuit, Dave Lindorff/Spy for No Country (00:28:00)

The long-fought effort to get legal acknowledgement of the abuse of Iraqi detainees during the Iraq War is coming to a federal court in Virginia, with Al-Shimari v. CACI. Since the case was first filed in 2008, military contractor CACI has pushed some 20 times to have it dismissed. Also on the show: Historians tell us that the Cold War is over, but the framing persists in news media that love a simple good guy vs. bad guy story, even as who the good and the bad guys are shifts over time. Telling history through actual human beings makes it harder to come up with slam-dunk answers, but can raise questions that are ultimately more useful for those seeking a peaceful planet. A new book provides a sort of case study; it’s about Ted Hall, who, as a young man, shared nuclear secrets from Los Alamos with the then–Soviet Union. Veteran investigative journalist Dave Lindorff has reported for numerous outlets and is author of Marketplace Medicine and This Can’t Be Happening, among other titles. We talked with him about his latest, Spy for No Country: The Story of Ted Hall, the Teenage Atomic Spy Who May Have Saved the World, which is out now from Prometheus Books.

CIVIC CIPHER: More Money in Law Enforcement Doesn’t Equal Less Crime / Headlines of Police Misconduct (00:59:00)

During the first half of today’s show, we discuss a report that was released detailing the increase in spending on law enforcement and a decrease in crimes solved. With this being the opposite of what people expected, there was an opportunity for us to reexamine the capacity of police to decrease crime rates. In the second half of today’s show, we cover some recent headlines detailing police misconduct including an officer placing a Black man into an illegal chokehold, another Black man dying in restrained police custody after asking for water, and another still where an officer planted evidence on a Black commuter and was caught on video doing so. Our Way Black History Fact details the path to U.S. citizenship and voting rights for the indigenous people in this country.

LITERATURE ALOUD: Walden Two (1948) by B.F. Skinner ch. 35-36 (00:55:57)

A utopian novel that outlines the philosophy and characteristics of an intentional community that has inspired many real-world, functioning intentional communities such as Virginia’s own Twin Oaks Community. The novel was controversial for promoting the common good over personal free will and the gradual molding of human behavior by groups of temporary “planners” for continual improvement. The goal is an evolving, supportive community that allows for a more relaxed work schedule and increased leisure time for personal and artistic pursuits.

LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: Trust-Busting 2024 with Stacy Mitchell & Matt Stoller: A Bipartisan Battle Against Monopoly Power (00:28:00)

Is 2024 the year of trust-busting? This bipartisan issue of small versus big is a fight taking place on the streets and in the federal and state courts; led by grassroots movements and consumer protest. The Biden administration has stepped up anti-trust action, but the number of merger filings is also up. What should we make of this moment? To help answer that question, Laura is joined by two experts on anti-trust action: Stacy Mitchell, Co-Executive Director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance and Matt Stoller, author of Goliath: The Hundred Year War Between Monopoly Power and Democracy and publisher of the newsletter BIG on Substack. Mitchell has played a leading role in today’s growing anti-monopoly movement and her work informed the Federal Trade Commission’s antitrust lawsuit against Amazon in 2023. Stoller is the former policy advisor to the Senate Budget Committee and also worked for a member of the Financial Services Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives during the financial crisis. In this episode, they unpack how decades of corporate consolidation did not lead to cheaper prices, better service or more jobs, but instead worsened our local economies, the quality of our lives and democracy. How have people power and government action together brought about a shift? Is it real? Hear why one guest calls this moment a delayed policy reaction to the 2008 financial crisis, plus a commentary from Laura on the last time Democrats took on monopoly power this actively – and what happened to that.

ALAN WATTS: Stop Feeling Lost by Doing This (00:15:17)

If there is one simple question that bothers us all as human beings, it is: Why are we living? It is a burden on our shoulders, and we cannot think about it without going depressed or becoming sad, because simply we can’t answer it. We got blocked. In this lecture, Alan Watts talks about the game of life, how the answer of that question is: To play. To simply not take it seriously, to stay within the flow of life without having to be very strict and rigid about it. We have to take it as if it was a game. Because if we take it seriously, we will be forced to think scientifically, to predict the future, and be aware that any false move, would lead us to a fatal death, which is not the case.

THOM HARTMANN Best of 1 Hour: Why Trump’s Criminal Hush Money Trial Is a Big Deal (00:58:00)

If Donald really thinks it’s a nothingburger, he certainly isn’t acting like it. Can voter suppression hand the 2024 Election to Trump? Also the neoliberal bullies have controlled the world long enough. We should seek to build societies in which aggression and dominance are not rewarded. Plus, the shady far right-wing threats to keep Biden off some state ballots.

LITERATURE ALOUD: Walden Two (1948) by B.F. Skinner ch. 28 (00:18:24)

ALAN WATTS: If You Try to Hold on to Life You Will Lose It (00:12:22)

Alan Watts talks about how some noble truths but in reality there is no absolute truth. So hope you enjoy. Alan Watts also touches a topic that is very interesting to me, about how by trying to cling or hold on to life we absolutely make it worse.

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: The Social Side of Curiosity at Work (00:28:00)

Business and popular magazines are riddled with assurances that the best leaders are curious. That where curiosity goes, success will follow. I blithely encourage people to “choose to be curious.” But the truth is: it isn’t that simple.

There is some skill involved. And, not surprisingly, more than a few social constructs. So, today we’re digging into the social side of curiosity at work with Phil Thompson, PhD. Phil is a professor in the Department of Management at the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech. He’s trying to understand how micro-organizational behaviors such as organizational citizenship behavior, impression management, organizational politics, perceived organizational support, and curiosity influence employees’ job performance. He wants to know: what happens when those dynamics intersect with gender differences? “Organizations advertise they want curious employees, they want people to be curious in the workplace. But I always wondered — there has to be a limit of how much curiosity is too much.” ~ Phil Thompson

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 4/17/24 (00:52:41)

On the Show: Book bans explode with 4,000 so far in the 2023-2024 school year. Republicans deliver their failed, dead-on-arrival impeachment articles for Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas to the US Senate. President Joe Biden brutally attacks failed former President Donald Trump in a campaign speech. Failed former President Donald Trump falls asleep again in court, and is threatened by jail by the judge. Donald Trump lashes out at a juror during jury selection and is warned by the judge. A confused Donald Trump admits to the basic facts of the criminal case against him during a disoriented statement outside the courtroom. Alina Habba, Donald Trump’s on-again-off-again lawyer, denies that Trump was sleeping in court, and compares Trump to Nelson Mandela. Support for Donald Trump is crashing in numerous polls now with his first of four criminal trials underway. Truth Social stock is collapsing, now down more than 65% from its peak. ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Forgive to Flourish: Embracing Healing and Growth (00:30:00)

On this show our goal is to find forgiveness so that we may flourish, embracing healing and growth. Weve all heard it before, holding onto a grudge hurts you more than the other person. Anger begets more anger, and forgiveness and love lead to more forgiveness and love. But forgiving, even ourselves, is no easy business. The seeds of hurt run deep and many make the act of forgiveness but never truly let go and move forward. Fortunately, there is a path and a roadmap to freedom. Start by acknowledging the hurt and your feelings about it. Then, try to understand the perspective of the person who hurt you or your capabilities and accountability. The next step is a decision, decide to forgive, letting go of resentment, and the desire for revenge. When you see the clearing, work on rebuilding trust and moving forward with a focus on healing and growth.

ALAN WATTS: Alan Watts Opens Up About Religion (00:17:54)

This summarised lecture by Alan Watts is from the Alan Watts Library at https://alanwatts.org. The image of Jesus is owned by the church traditions and authorities. He has been moulded to fit the interests of the church patriarchs for centuries, so much so that the prevailing image of Jesus is now so far removed from what he truly represented. Namely an energy from the future who came to earth to bring illumination and knowledge to humanity. The reason why the Jesus/Jeshua personality came to earth was to create an opening or doorway to a different state of consciousness. He wanted to set an example of the possibilities that are available to each human being. He wanted to hold up a mirror to human beings and remind them of their own divine origin and the dormant potentials they carried within. The potentials for peace, freedom and mastership over oneself. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is unexpectedly missing from court without an explanation. Failed former President Donald Trump reportedly falls asleep during the first day of his first criminal trial. Donald Trump loses his mind after his first day in criminal court, claiming that the judge will not let him go to his son Barron’s funeral, among other lies that he told. Alina Habba, one of Donald Trump’s former lawyers, misstates what due process is during a television appearance, among other confusions and misstatements. David is notified that he successfully deprogrammed a hardcore MAGA Trumpist, a viewer’s father. David attempts to confront a random MAGA Trumpist on Instagram and it does not go well. DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 4/14/24 (00:55:11)

On the Show: Tesla is laying off more than 10% of its global workforce. Something very serious appears to have gone wrong with Jimmy Dore, formerly considered a left wing host, who has now bought into every major conspiracy theory. Just minutes before the start of his criminal trial, failed former President Donald Trump explodes in an outburst on Truth Social. Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN April 13, 2024 (00:59:30)

Segment One

We begin the show with Tom Scheller and Paul Waldman, authors of a book about how rural Americans are likely to be the death of democracy. We discuss the opinions that are held by many rural voters, and we note that rural voters have a disproportionate effect on elections. We discuss the problems they face, but how they tend to blame problems on city ‘elites’ when in fact they are due to mismanagement and deliberate actions by the very GOP officials they voted for. We need to ask; what are the representatives of rural areas (whom are mostly Republican) actually doing FOR these rural citizens?

Segment Two

We then catch up with Austin Frerick to discuss his book about the corporate food business/farm business in the United States. Including the emergence of food barons, and how they control food supplies in the US. The Farm Bill, up for renewal this year, should be called the Wall Street Bill, since it benefits large food producing conglomerates, rather than farmers themselves. We discuss the effects on workers, farmers, the environment, and consumers.

THE BRADCAST 4/12/2024 Encore: Journalist Alex Burness on new Wisconsin election restrictions, Neo-Nazi recalled from office in OK (00:58:00)

Encore: original airdate 4-12-2024. On today’s ‘BradCast’: Encouraging news from Tuesday’s elections in rural Enid, Oklahoma, where voters successfully removed a neo-Nazi from the city council in a recall election. In Presidential primaries in Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and Wisconsin, President Biden again saw small but noteworthy protest votes against him in response to his policy on Israel’s brutal war in Gaza. Donald Trump continued to do worse among his own Republican Party voters, with significant numbers voting for Nikki Haley, who dropped out of the race weeks ago. In Wisconsin, voters approved two deceptively benign constitutional amendments, placed on the ballot by the extremely gerrymandered Republican-controlled state legislature, that could unleash chaos in the November 2024 election. Voting rights journalist ALEX BURNESS of Bolts Magazine explains the two ballot measures that are likely to wreak havoc in November in the closely divided state, and could be wielded to criminalize routine election tasks, intimidate election officials and volunteers, and more.

The novel was controversial for promoting the common good over personal free will and the gradual molding of human behavior by groups of temporary “planners” for continual improvement. The goal is an evolving, supportive community that allows for a more relaxed work schedule and increased leisure time for personal and artistic pursuits.

President Joe Biden is suddenly leading Donald Trump in recent polls and has also taken a lead in the financial betting markets. Failed former President Donald Trump’s third desperate attempt to delay his New York hush money trial fails, and unless something changes, the trial will start Monday. Donald Trump explodes after his appeals are rejected, publishing fourteen unhinged vlogs to Truth Social. MAGA is realizing that they are doing themselves in with the anti-abortion insanity. Donald Trump says it would be okay for states to decide to imprison doctors who perform abortions, if that’s what they want to do. A reporter asks Donald Trump whether Arizona has gone to far with their 1864 abortion law, and Trump says both yes and no. Alina Habba, Donald Trump’s on-again-off-again lawyer, has been fired by Trump’s former CFO Allen Weisselberg. Fox News host Jesse Watters confusedly thinks that $20/hour is a “six figure” salary during his appearance on the Patrick Bet-David show. CIVIC CIPHER: How Effective are Tough on Crime Laws? / Real Migrants Love America (00:59:00)

The first half of today’s show is dedicated to discussing how ineffective Tough on Crime laws are. There is a wave of politicians campaigning on how stricter laws and increased police presence will make things safer, but the data simply doesnt support that conclusion. In the second half of today’s show, we remember the migrant workers who lost their lives during the Key Bridge collapse in Maryland. We try to reclaim the original narrative suggesting that most folks are as hard working as these individuals who died while making this country better. Our Way Black History Fact is about Willie James Howard, the young man who was lynched in a very similar way to Emmett Till.

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: A Special Alchemy: Curiosity. Empathy & Social Media, with Dr. Ben Rein  (00:28:00)

Today’s conversation with Ben Rein, PhD is a Choose to Be Curious trifecta: a neuroscientist, who studies empathy, has devoted himself to science communication, and willingly stands in the chaotic swirl where curiosity can go weirdly very awry. Ben is a postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Robert Malenka’s lab at Stanford University and a science communicator on social media. You might know him as Dr.Brein on TikTok or Doctor.Brein on Instagram. He’s the one summarizing research papers, teaching neuroscience basics, and debunking viral videos that promote scientific misinformation. Ben has managed to combine curiosity, empathy and social media and have genuine good come of it. At some point in our conversation I declared his work a “special kind of alchemy.” I stand by that. “We need to be very curious about the information we receive, especially before we adopt it.” ~ Dr. Ben Rein

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 4/10/24 (00:55:35)

On the Show: Elie Honig, CNN Senior Legal Analyst, New York Magazine Columnist, and author of the new book “Untouchable: How Powerful People Get Away with It,” joins David to discuss the real two-tiered justice system, accountability, and much more. Get the book: https://amzn.to/3PV7vrT  Just days after Donald Trump puts out a video about abortion essentially saying “let states do whatever they want,” the Arizona Supreme Court upholds an 1864 abortion law that is a near-total ban on abortion, without exceptions for rape or incest, and with criminal penalties for abortion providers. Republican Congressman Greg Murphy drops the grotesque abortion lie that Democrats want “after-birth abortions” during an appearance on Fox News. Failed former President Donald Trump takes credit for President Joe Biden’s stock market record and warns Jews during a disgusting interview on Real America’s Voice with Wayne Allyn Root. Karoline Leavitt, Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign National Press Secretary, claims during an interview that President Joe Biden can’t speak, and in doing so, uses the made up word “damnening” twice. Sarah Matthews, former aide to President Donald Trump, says that she has no choice but to vote for President Joe Biden in 2024. Nicole Shanahan, Robert F. Kennedy Jr’s 2024 Vice Presidential running mate, hasn’t been seen at public events since her VP announcement. Former Trump voter Jim-Bob from West Virginia is voting for President Joe Biden in 2024. Absolutely furious voicemail caller attacks David for a long list of reasons.

ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY:   Connecting: Building Strong Social Bridges (00:30:00)

On this showwe are exploring the importance of connecting and building strong social bridges. No matter where you think you are with your current circles, there is always room to grow, strengthen, and nurture. You may think youre a loner but we all need someone who has our back, cares what happens to us, and encourages us along our journey. A strong social bridge refers to a meaningful and supportive connection between individuals. It is characterized by trust, mutual respect, and open communication. Strong social bridges provide a sense of belonging, emotional support, and a network of people who can help each other navigate lifes challenges. These connections are essential for building a supportive community and promoting overall well-being. When was the last time you looked to your corner for support? It may be time for a little inventory, whos there for you and who are you there for?

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 4/9/24 (00:55:55)

On the Show: The solar eclipse of April 8, 2024 appears to have broken the brains of many Fox News hosts, with them linking the eclipse to the US-Mexico border and generally making no sense. Sunny Hostin, co-host of The View, wrongly links the April 8, 2024 solar eclipse to climate change. CNN brutally fact checks Donald Trump’s recent statement about abortion, but missed at least one critical aspect of it. An element of the right wing is revolting against Donald Trump over his recent abortion video. Rita Palma, an advisor to presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., admits in a meeting with Republicans in New York that his campaign is united with Trump supporters against Joe Biden, and even outlines ways for RFK supporters to help Trump. Failed former President Donald Trump loses it when a judge shoots down his attempted appeal of his trial date with a single sentence filing. Donald Trump wildly claims that President Joe Biden defecated on the Resolute Desk at the White House during his recent major fundraiser in Florida. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson says that it was a mistake to endorse President Joe Biden in 2020 and he will not be making an endorsement this year. A drunk Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert was reportedly cut off by a bartender at a Republican gala, and security intervened as she attempted to get pictures with Donald Trump. Christian voicemail caller is upset that David examined the claims around the supposed Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

One of the sources of the rich cadre of authors and activists I have here on Spirit In Action is the promotion of writers done by Peter Bermudes of GLPR ” that’s Gail Leondar Public Relations ” and it was through Gail that I was first acquainted with GLPR, though Peter has been at the helm since 4 years ago. In many ways, the mission of GLPR dovetails perfectly with that of NSR, helping find and raise up the voice of those making this world better through their ideas and writing. GLPR has done promotion for so many vital and powerful change leaders over the decades, like Dr. Helen Caldicott, the Dalai Lama, Frances Moore Lappe, James Loewen, Chuck Collins, and a thousand others, aiding them in getting their ideas and insights out to the wider world.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 4/8/24 (00:56:21)

On the Show: Elements of MAGA, including Marjorie Taylor Greene’s boyfriend Brian Glenn, and Trump’s former lawyer Rudy Giuliani, have some interesting ideas about the meaning of the eclipse and recent earthquake, as well as so-called “locusts,” by which they mean cicadas. In a stunning new Franklin and Marshall poll of Pennsylvania voters, President Joe Biden leads Donald Trump by 10 in a head-to-head race. Fox News, including Maria Bartiromo, are simply devastated by the latest strong jobs report. Republican Senator JD Vance appears on Maria Bartiromo’s Fox News show to diminish the latest jobs report by claiming many of the jobs went to foreign-born people. Examining whether a central claim to the resurrection of Jesus — that his tomb was “found empty by women” — is based on any historical facts. A then and now look at Donald Trump’s vocabulary, speaking ability, and coherence over the last 45 years. A confused Donald Trump stuns MAGA voters with a new video about abortion in which he appears to say essentially “do whatever you want as long as you support me.” A miserable-looking Melania Trump joins Donald Trump at his major fundraising event over the weekend. EARTH RIOT RADIO #111: Start the Ecstatic Enviromania (00:29:00)

It is clearly a moment for a new approach to defending the Earth. All manner of protests can be absorbed by the police and their corporation sponsors. Control of the press, shadow-banning of social media, the constant presence of aggressive marketing – the sources of climate toxins have had many years to perfect their response to standard protesting. But the quasi-religion advocated by the Ehrlichs allows for a regard for the intelligence of nature put forward by James Lovelock and Lyn Marguliis in the Earth as Gaia. This means that activists are a part of a larger living being. Direct actions become rituals, and we are the fire and the flood.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN April 6, 2024 (00:59:30)

Segment One

We begin the show with Anders Croy, Communications Director, Florida Watch and DeSantis Watch. We discuss the latest rulings by the Florida Supreme Court, one which upheld the constitutionality a 6-week ban on abortions. The law, signed by the Governor last year had been challenged as unconstitutional. In a second decision however, the Court allowed a referendum question to codify abortion as a constitutional right. So in November, Floridians will be casting their ballots. Separately, medical benefits for children have been revoked, which had been in place during the pandemic. Florida has not participated in the federal Medicaid program. The cost of living has risen sharply in the state due to higher housing costs, insurance, sales tax, and many other hidden taxes and fees. Florida has become DeSantis’ petri dish for policies he wanted for the US as a whole.

Segment Two

We then catch up with Anne Nelson, a professor at the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs, author and lecturer. We discuss Project 2025, the road map that the far right, under the aegis of the Heritage Foundation, and others like it, have developed, and are now planning to institute, no matter if Trump is elected or not. A systemic buildup of this effort is in place, and its proponents have worked from precinct level up to the federal level. The goal is to institute a theocracy to rule the country, and the religion is none other than christo-fascism.

COUNTERSPIN: Phyllis Bennis on Gaza Ceasefire Resolution, Robert Weissman on Boeing Scandal  (00:28:00)This week on CounterSpin: A senior UN human rights official told the BBC that there is a “plausible” case that Israel is using starvation as a weapon of war in Gaza, a war crime. Meanwhile, US citizens struggle to make sense of White House policy that seems to call for getting aid to Palestinians while pursuing a course of action that makes that aid necessary, if insufficient. Phyllis Bennis is senior fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies, an international advisor with Jewish Voice for Peace and a longtime UN-watcher. She joins us with thoughts on the evolving situation.

Also on the show: As reporter Alex Sammon outlined five years ago in the American Prospect, the Boeing scandal is an exemplar of the corporate crisis of our age. Putting resources that should’ve been put into safety into shareholder dividends and stock buybacks, selling warning indicators that alert pilots to problems with flight-control software as optional extras, and outsourcing engineering to coders in India making $9 an hour—these weren’t accidents; they were choices, made consciously, over time. So why are media so excited about Boeing’s CEO stepping down, as though his “taking one for the team” means changing the playbook? We hear from Robert Weissman, president of Public Citizen.

SEA CHANGE RADIO: Rod Graham: The Case For Legacy Preference in College Admissions (00:29:00)

Legacy students, applicants whose families attended the school, comprised 36 percent of Harvards class of 2022. Notably, 77% of students admitted to Harvard via legacy preference are white. These days, however, the practice of giving legacy applicants a competitive edge over their peers in college admission decisions has come under fire. Last week on Sea Change Radio, we spoke with Law Professor John Brittain, from the University of the District of Columbia, who made the case for ending legacy preference in college admissions, asserting that it preserves wealth, power, and privilege. This week, we speak to Rod Graham, a sociology professor at Old Dominion University, who offers a contrasting perspective. Graham explains why he believes that legacy preference admissions should just be considered another factor that admissions officers should be free to consider, similar to how they may weigh an applicants geography, race, athletic prowess, and other factors.

LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: North Carolina’s LGBTQ Community Stands Against Domestic Terrorism  (00:28:00)

On December 3, 2022, an attack on two electrical substations in Moore County, North Carolina left 45,000 households and businesses without power for up to five days. It was the biggest domestic terrorist attack on the electricity grid in U.S. history, but one year later, no arrests have been made and authorities have named no suspects other than to say that whoever did this knew what they were doing. In this installment of The Laura Flanders Shows investigation into the local roots of the January 6 insurrection in one state, North Carolina, Laura speaks with the North Carolinians who were at a drag show in Moore County when the lights went out. Downtown Divas had been harassed for months by anti-LGBTQ leaders ” did the sabotage attack have anything to do with that harassment or the drag performance scheduled that night? As legislators and local leaders continue to roll back LGBTQ rights, they remain largely silent about the real threats facing North Carolinians and the nation from domestic terrorists with their sights set on U.S. power grids. Why? This episode also looks at how the LGBTQ community in North Carolina is standing up to hate and creating safety ” with Drag operatics ” for all.

LITERATURE ALOUD: Walden Two (1948) by B.F. Skinner ch. 15-16 (00:44:23)

ALAN WATTS: Conquering Fear (00:14:32)

Conquering Fear by Alan Watts. Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was a British writer and lecturer who interpreted and popularized Eastern philosophy and religion for a Western audience. Watts wrote more than 25 books and articles on subjects important to Eastern and Western religion, introducing the then-burgeoning youth culture to The Way of Zen (1957), one of the first bestselling books on Buddhism. In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), Watts proposed that Buddhism could be thought of as a form of psychotherapy and not a religion. He considered Nature, Man, and Woman (1958) to be, “from a literary point of view—the best book I have ever written.” He also explored human consciousness and psychedelics in the essay “The New Alchemy” (1958) and in the book The Joyous Cosmology (1962).

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Seeing Like a Location Scout, with Aaron Hurvitz (00:28:00)

What might the rest of us learn from someone whose job it is to observe places really closely? I met movie location scout Aaron Hurvitz at a wedding last summer and immediately thought (1) cool suit, and (2) interesting job — seems like a curiosity enterprise to me! Aaron’s location scouting credits include Joker, West Side Story, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Maestro. He says he likes “bringing to reality what’s on the page.” Indeed!” I would say curiosity is definitely a huge asset. I would say a boldness to go places and throw caution to the wind, and just say, ‘I wonder what’s inside that fence, or what’s behind that door…'” ~ Aaron Hurvitz

ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Empowering Thoughts: The Impact of Your Mindset on Hope and the Future (00:30:01)

On this show we are exploring the impact your mindset has on hope and your future as we lean into producing empowering thoughts. It’s time to stop the hamster wheel of thinking for an important check-in. It’s no secret that our minds are incredibly active, even when we’re sleeping! According to cognitive neuroscientists, we are conscious of only about 5 percent of our cognitive activity, so most of our decisions, actions, emotions, and behavior depends on the 95 percent of brain activity that goes beyond our conscious awareness. It’s time to be intentional and grab a little more of the unconscious market share. We can move in the right direction by shifting our thinking patterns, interrupting negative self-talk, and being willing to embrace the unknown with possibility and hope.

Republicans reveal their slate of “impeachment managers” to prosecute the absurd and destined-to-fail impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. An increasingly broke Donald Trump is firing staffers and closing election offices, while President Joe Biden continues to open them. The Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro twists himself into a logic pretzel when asked about the firing of Candace Owens during an appearance with cultural critic and arbiter of ideas Dave Rubin. Failed former President Donald Trump threatens Americans in an unhinged interview after attending the wake of NYPD officer Jonathan Diller, and a Fox Host calls Trump’s comments “somber.” Donald Trump shares a video violently portraying President Joe Biden being bound and gagged, reminding everyone why Trump’s “bloodbath” comments were not to be taken lightly. Voicemail caller asks whether Donald Trump’s children or other MAGA figures, will try to seize power when Trump dies.
