LITERATURE ALOUD: Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) by Harriet Beecher Stowe ch.34 (00:26:37)
Among the most banned books in the United States, Uncle Tom’s Cabin or, Life Among the Lowly is a novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe which treats slavery as a central theme. Stowe was a Connecticut-born teacher at the Hartford Female Academy and an active abolitionist. The novel is believed to have had a profound effect on the North’s view of slavery. In fact, when he met Harriet Beecher Stowe, President Lincoln is said to have commented, “So you’re the little lady whose book started the Civil War.” First published on March 20, 1852, the story focuses on the tale of Uncle Tom, a long-suffering black slave, the central character around whose life the other characters—both fellow slaves and slave owners—revolve. The novel depicts the harsh reality of slavery while also showing that Christian love and faith can overcome even something as evil as enslavement of fellow human beings. WINGS #33-23 Cancer Math (00:28:58)
Biometry is the application of mathematical analysis to biological data. Mathematician Bertell was enticed into health research and did complex analyses on large data sets with many variables. Her first breakthrough was in showing how exposure to radiation increased the risk of metastasizing cancers – which convinced the US Congress to limit the use of X-rays to diagnostics. She was also able to trace the spike in breast cancers among cohorts of American women to their exposure to above-ground nuclear testing. Based on her Xray research, she came out against routine mammography, especially on younger women. Among other research topics, she worked on how pollution affects the health of whole communities. She was offended by campaigns that led individuals to try all sorts of things to prevent disease in themselves without looking at the environment around them. She was shunned and vilified by various persons with financial stakes that would be adversely affected by her work. But all the work she discusses in this 1994 interview is still relevant and not overturned today. The lessons she conveys are still needed.

Desperate Republican Congressman Guy Reschenthaler complains on the floor of the House that unemployment under Joe Biden went up last month to 3.9%. Fox News propagandist Maria Bartiromo attacks Joe Biden over his involvement in securing the release of hostages held by Hamas. Elon Musk has a total meltdown on stage while being interviewed by Andrew Ross Sorkin at the New York Times Dealbook event, telling advertisers who left Twitter/X to go “F” themselves. President Joe Biden has surpassed failed former President Donald Trump in a new Morning Consult national election poll. The discussion about Donald Trump’s apparent cognitive decline goes mainstream, with a lengthy segment on The View discussing the matter. Voicemail caller says food is terrible in red states.

ALAN WATTS: Stop Feeling Lost by Doing This (00:15:17)
If there is one simple question that bothers us all as human beings, it is: Why are we living? It is a burden on our shoulders, and we cannot think about it without going depressed or becoming sad, because simply we can’t answer it. We got blocked. In this lecture, Alan Watts talks about the game of life, how the answer of that question is: To play. To simply not take it seriously, to stay within the flow of life without having to be very strict and rigid about it. We have to take it as if it was a game. Because if we take it seriously, we will be forced to think scientifically, to predict the future, and be aware that any false move, would lead us to a fatal death, which is not the case.

In the second half of the show, we discuss a rethink of the carceral system in the U.S. We take notes from Push Black who pose some interesting questions that we hope will enable you to perform some thought experiments on your own, and ultimately rethink our current system of criminal rehabilitation. Our Way Black History Fact uncovers the slavery-based Black roots of the concept of Family Reunions

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Curiosity & Racist Mindsets, with Narendra Keval (00:28:00)
“Racism,” observes psychotherapist and clinical psychologist Narendra Keval, “demands certainty” — the opposite of curiosity. His is a thoughtful call for cultivating social spaces for curiosity and exercising our capacity to think under fire. Narendra pairs curiosity and concern. He reminds us that to stay in dialogue — especially under fire, in the face of the resistance and anger and alienation — one must have genuine concern for the other. I have been very moved by the political and social implications of cultivating concern for people we find particularly difficult. Supplemental guest Traci Ruble and her Sidewalk Talk colleagues seem to embody that practice. I love that.
How might you help create space for these conversations, and do so in community? “Curiosity can be quite a treacherous journey. And what I’m interested in, particularly, is what are the moments when one might retreat again from discovery. ~ Narendra Keval
DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 11/29/23 (00:55:35)
On the Show: Republicans panic as Hunter Biden offers to publicly testify. Donald Trump’s lawyers argue that Trump never actually swore an oath to “defend” the Constitution. Republican Senator John Kennedy faceplants badly as he tries to pull the “dangerous urban gun crime” routine during a Senate hearing. Republican Congressman George Santos is on the verge of tears as he claims he doesn’t care if he gets expelled from the House of Representatives. Liz Cheney says that Donald Trump was refusing to eat in the aftermath of the 2021 Trump riots. Using a classic abuser line, Trump and his lawyers argue that the court clerk who received death threats “allowed herself” to be abused. Failed former President Donald Trump calls for MSNBC to be shut down in a disgusting dictatorial Truth Social rant. The conspiracy theory about President Joe Biden’s supposed criminality implodes on Fox News in real time. Donald Trump reportedly called Iowa evangelicals “so-called Christians” and “pieces of (expletive).” Voicemail caller suggests that left wingers need guns to protect themselves from right wingers with guns.

THE CHILDREN’S HOUR: Coyotes (00:58:00)
This time on The Children’s Hour, we learn about a canine that is thriving across North America: coyotes. They may look like wild dogs, but we learn from biologist Zoe Rossman that they are quite different from our friendly house pets. Coyotes are opportunists, and will eat whatever they can: from garbage to cats. Originally from the desert southwestern United States and Mexico, coyotes are now found in every city in America. Their haunting barks, yips and eerie howls sound spooky at night. But coyotes serve an important role in our ecosystem, including helping keep rodents in check. The wily ways of coyotes have inspired stories for thousands of years, and one from the Pueblo of Santa Ana in New Mexico has been turned into a story by Emmett “Shkeme” Garcia, illustrated by Victoria Pringle. Beth from our Kids Crew reviews the book, Coyote and the Sky: How the Sun, Moon, and Stars Began.

THE BRADCAST 11/24/2023 Encore: Biden’s Popular Programs, Trump’s Vows of Vengeance, Media’s Failure to Cover Both (00:58:00)
Original airdate 11-13-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: A new NYT/Siena poll appears to show 2024 GOP front-runner Donald Trump beating President Joe Biden in five of six battleground states, which has freaked out many Democrats. A different poll finds that Biden’s policies are wildly popular with the vast majority of Americans – – yet most of the public does not know he has actually enacted them. While polling this far out from an election is only a snapshot in time, there are strong reasons to be concerned whether Americans are getting the facts from their mainstream media outlets. They appear to be deeply under-informed about the FACTS of Joe Biden’s extraordinary accomplishments in his first term that rival FDR and LBJ, and completely unaware of the chilling FACTS of what Donald Trump HIMSELF has vowed to do if he is re-elected, rivaling Hitler and Mussolini, and his eliminationist, fascist rhetoric. Callers weigh in.
EARTH RIOT RADIO: WHY ARE WE SHOPPING WHILE WE’RE BOMBING? (00:29:00)
Our task for more than 20 years running has been to dramatize Consumerism, the biggest and baddest fundamentalist religion in the US. But we’ve never had a holiday shopping season kick-off that shows us the violence of our Consumerism as vividly- as this year’s Black Friday. We didn’t choose an easy issue. Consumerism, the cultural enforcement arm of Capitalism, is everywhere and nowhere– always engaged in its own normalization. So we think that the little screen: fashion, frequent flyer miles, western medicine, foodie mania; this is all OK without any intelligent review. Even climate change isn’t a political presence to most consumers. We think the weather is ours to consume. But this year’s shopping season? Showing through all this saturation advertising is the face of another child, killed by our Consumer economy, the empire kind, the guns and bombs variety. This week, our activism is energized by sorrow, our shopping is slowed by that face, those eyes, and another life.

Why did the U.S. quietly ‘pause’ gun exports for the next 90 days, a little over a week ago, and why haven’t any of us heard about it until now? Why does elected GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson appear to have no bank accounts or assets of any type? Is that even possible? Why did 31 House Democrats vote AGAINST expelling serial liar and federally-indicted New York Republican Rep. George Santos? We talk with Representative David Meuse about the prevalence of gun violence in the US. This, along with the unwillingness to enforce gun safety when potential shooters are mentally ill, and are known to be mentally ill. In NH, there is no ‘red flag’ law, for example. We talk about the consequences, in light of recent events in NH and Maine, as in other states.
Part 2:
We talk with Bill Curry and Robert Hockett about the changes necessary in the economic system. Currently, the US economy is driven by anger. Workers are angry about the great disparity between themselves and the owners of capital, while they, the actual producers, are ill-treated. We discuss the possibility of a real membership society, where workers participate in ownership, rather than be the “rented” labor of capitalists.

TUC RADIO: Alex Carey – Corporations and Propaganda, parts 1&2 (00:58:00)
Alex Carey wrote that the people of the US have been subjected to an unparalleled, expensive, 3/4 century long propaganda effort designed to expand corporate rights by undermining democracy and destroying the unions. The 20th century, he wrote, is marked by three historic developments: the growth of democracy via the expansion of the franchise, the growth of corporations, and the growth of propaganda to protect corporations from democracy. Careys unique view of US history goes back to World War I and ends with the Reagan era. Noam Chomsky dedicated his book Manufacturing Consent to the memory of Alex Carey. Chomsky says that the Australian sociologist would have written the definitive history of propaganda in the US, had he lived to complete his work. This is a fairly complex production with many voices, historic sound clips, and source material. The program has been used by writers and students of history and propaganda. Alex Carey: Taking the Risk out of Democracy, Corporate Propaganda VS Freedom and Liberty with a foreword by Noam Chomsky was published by the University of Illinois Press in 1995.

LITERATURE ALOUD: Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) by Harriet Beecher Stowe ch.31 (00:14:14)
ALAN WATTS: Conquering Fear (00:14:32)
Conquering Fear by Alan Watts. Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was a British writer and lecturer who interpreted and popularized Eastern philosophy and religion for a Western audience. Watts wrote more than 25 books and articles on subjects important to Eastern and Western religion, introducing the then-burgeoning youth culture to The Way of Zen (1957), one of the first bestselling books on Buddhism. In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), Watts proposed that Buddhism could be thought of as a form of psychotherapy and not a religion. He considered Nature, Man, and Woman (1958) to be, “from a literary point of view—the best book I have ever written.” He also explored human consciousness and psychedelics in the essay “The New Alchemy” (1958) and in the book The Joyous Cosmology (1962).

You really feel yourself there, and get an idea of how saunas have adapted to modern living in Finland and yet remain a major source of social cohesion, especially among women – perhaps accounting for the relatively high status and achievements of women in that country. (Kaarina’s Sauna book will be out in English when she finds a publisher.)

ALAN WATTS: Alan Watts Opens Up About Religion (00:17:54)
This summarised lecture by Alan Watts is from the Alan Watts Library at https://alanwatts.org. The image of Jesus is owned by the church traditions and authorities. He has been moulded to fit the interests of the church patriarchs for centuries, so much so that the prevailing image of Jesus is now so far removed from what he truly represented. Namely an energy from the future who came to earth to bring illumination and knowledge to humanity. The reason why the Jesus/Jeshua personality came to earth was to create an opening or doorway to a different state of consciousness. He wanted to set an example of the possibilities that are available to each human being. He wanted to hold up a mirror to human beings and remind them of their own divine origin and the dormant potentials they carried within. The potentials for peace, freedom and mastership over oneself. Speech extract from “Jesus: His Religion” by Alan Watts, courtesy of https://alanwatts.org

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Seeing Differently: Curiosity, Creativity & Dyslexia, with Rebecca Kamen (00:28:00)
You wouldn’t know it, given her passion for research and accumulation of impressive academic credentials, but one thing artist and educator Rebecca Kamen doesn’t do very well is read. Only as an adult did she come to understand that she lives with dyslexia — a challenge in making the connection between the letters on a page and their meaning and sound — a challenge in reading. As we come to understand the human brain better, we’re also coming to see that dyslexia, once uniformly regarded as a learning disability, is also a lens for seeing things differently. Think “neurodivergent” not “disabled.” I was delighted when Rebecca, the deeply curious & creative person who happens to have dyslexia, reached out to me with an offer to explore all three. Rebecca’s artwork is informed by wide-ranging investigations of cosmology, history, and philosophy, and by connecting common threads that flow across various scientific fields to capture and re-imagine what the scientists see. She, and they, go looking for patterns.
“Patterns,” she says, “are critical for knowing.”

RADIO ART HOUR: Hali Palombo, The Cat’s Miaow (00:58:00)
This week on “The Radio Art Hour” tune in several works from Chicago-based radio artist Hali Palombo, and one from the Australian band The Cat’s Miaow. First, Wave Farm Radio Art Fellow 2023, Lia Kohl introduces “Call Book” from Hali Palombo (2022). “Call Book” isolates and magnifies human broadcasts on amateur radio little phrases, sentences, or vocalizations that might otherwise be forgotten. Palombo’s belief that theres something to be learned from every human interaction focuses the work on cementing these unnoticed moments in the imagination of the listener. Shortwave radio, she says, isn’t just harsh frequencies, number stations, or signal interference it’s also a longstanding method of communication. While making the piece, Palombo would record small pieces of chit chat, mouth sounds, or conversation and build elaborate compositions around them, framing the source material into more than just passing sounds or words. Then, tune in two tracks from Palombo’s 2023 album “Radio & My Voice.” We hear “Weather Balloon” and “Voice Scrambler” here. Finally we hear the 2023 release “Between the Stations and the Silence” by the Australian band The Cats Miaow.

THE BRADCAST 11/17/2023 Encore: Huge Election Victories for Democrats, Democracy and Reproductive Freedoms, with Robin Marty of the West Alabama Women’s Center (00:58:00)
Original airdate 11-8-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: It was a very positive night for democracy and reproductive freedom in the United States on Tuesday, as Democrats, in almost every state, continued their post-2016, Trump-era winning streak at the polls. In the Republican-controlled state of Ohio, voters entrenched abortion rights in the state’s constitution. In Virginia, Democrats won full control of the state legislature, crushing GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s hopes for an abortion ban. In Kentucky, Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear won re-election. In Mississippi, major voting problems in majority-Black areas generated hours-long lines, with scandal-plagued GOP Gov. Tate Reeves winning re-election. In Pennsylvania, Democrats retained control of the state supreme court, and Philadelphia elected its first female, first Black mayor. Reproductive rights expert ROBIN MARTY, Executive Director of the West Alabama Women’s Center, offers witty insight and deep analysis on Tuesday’s victories for reproductive freedoms, the political landscape going forward into the critical 2024 election, and much more.
EARTH RIOT RADIO: The USA Has Not and Will Not Ceasefire (00:29:00)
The protection of innocent children and families are enshrined in the Declaration of Human Rights that Eleanor Roosevelt read to our nation in the late 40’s. The US has not lived up to that pledge. The suffering and early death of so many innocent people in the colonial wars in Viet Nam, Afghanistan, Chile and Iraq also impacted home life upon the soldier’s return, as divorces and suicides soared. Certainly, the return to employment as local law enforcement and the brutality against people of color by veterans – is still going on. How can peace be attained with such gigantic Pentagon budgets? We have become a military economy. The Pentagon is not a government department; it is a world.

We begin the show with Laura Jedeed, a freelance journalist who focuses on right-wing groups. She writes about the Convocation of States, a group devoted to changing the Constitution, and they all claim to be the “good guys or “god guys. As it happens, the new Speaker of the House is a leader within this group.
Segment Two
We then talk with Ariel Gold, with the Fellowship of Reconciliation, the oldest interfaith organization in the world. We discuss the Israeli offensive on Hamas and thousands of innocent civilians being killed inn its wake. It seems that Hamas and Israel are more interested in perpetuating conflict rather than resolving it. We learn a great deal of history of this conflict, and the events leading up to the current clash. What we need to do is “reclaim the name of God”, which is being used to excuse the slaughter.

THE BRADCAST 11/16/2023 High Stakes Voting System Trial begins in GA, with guest: Plaintiff Marilyn Marks (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: A high stakes voting system trial is set to begin in Georgia that has critical implications for the nation and the 2024 election. The long-awaited ‘Curling v. Raffensperger’ voting system trial seeks to force Georgia ditch its costly, unverifiable and insecure touchscreen voting system statewide, and switch to verifiable hand-marked paper ballots at all polling places. The case spawned a landmark expert cybersecurity report that identified so many critical vulnerabilities in the system that the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency issued an advisory recommending that all jurisdictions using the same equipment to immediately apply security patches. But Georgia’s Republican Sec. of State Brad Raffensperger said he won’t apply those security patches until after the 2024 election. The same Dominion-made voting system is also at the center of the statewide voting system software breach in Coffee County, GA, by MAGA Republican operatives. Plaintiff MARILYN MARKS, election expert and Executive Director of the non-profit group, Coalition for Good Governance, explains the latest developments in the lawsuit, and the stakes for the state and the nation. Also today: New developments in the Fulton County election theft RICO trial, including the attorney who confessed to leaking sensitive pre-trial proffer videos – – but is he really the source? LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: New Yorkers Welcome Migrants: Whats it Take to Make Sanctuary Real? (00:28:00)
In 1989, New York City declared itself a sanctuary city ” a place where undocumented immigrants seeking asylum are safe from immediate deportation and eligible to receive city services. But living up to that promise is tougher than just passing a law. This year, New York City has received over 100,000 asylum seekers so far, including 15,000 unaccompanied minors. Most are from Latin America, where they face extortion from gangs, robbery, rape and LGBTQ+ persecution. The journey to the U.S. is deadly, but so is life back home. They set out by bus, train, and on foot through forests and the Rio Grande, often with babies and toddlers, to come to the U.S. In this episode of The Laura Flanders Show, produced in collaboration with the School of Labor and Urban Studies at the City University of New York (CUNY), hear the harrowing journeys and hopes of refugees coming to New York City ” and the issues they face soon after they arrive ” including trouble finding work, shelter, foster care placement, and legal battles. New York City is conflicted about their arrival, politicians say there are too many migrants, and far-Right extremists create a hostile and oftentimes dangerous environment. Stepping in is a growing network of volunteers and nonprofits comprised of social workers and lawyers on the ground and in the courts, who are working to give asylum seekers a welcome, shelter, and legal protection. New York City as we know it would cease to exist without migrants. Here are their stories.

THE BRADCAST 11/10/2023 Encore: Journalist Russ Baker on Elon Musk’s world of disinformation) (00:58:00)
Original airdate 11-1-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) found that Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson’s proposal to ‘offset’ $14.3 billion in emergency aid to Israel with massive cuts to the budget of the IRS would actually add $12.5 billion to the deficit, and cost the U.S. nearly $27 billion in lost revenue. In Wisconsin, Democratic Governor Tony Evers sued the state’s dysfunctional, heavily gerrymandered GOP-controlled state legislature for failing to carry out basic government functions. The death toll in Palestine continues to escalate in the wake of Israel’s unrelenting retaliation to Hamas’ barbaric terrorist attack on October 7. Yet the horrific news has been made unnecessarily worse by the flood of disinformation on social media, most notably on Elon Musk’s rebranded Twitter/X. The European Union has begun to crack down on Musk’s failure to moderate the tidal wave of disinformation on Twitter since his takeover. Segment One
We begin with Professor Patrice McMahon, University of Nebraska, about the recent Polish elections. The surprising win of the parliamentarians that are more progressive seems to be due to the fact that more women than men voted, and younger people voted. We discuss how Poland differs now.
Segment Two
We then speak with Mel Goodman, Professor at Johns Hopkins, and former CIA Analyst. We discuss the Military Industrial Complex and how it affects the US in fighting or supporting wars. The latest payday is the horrific war Israeli is waging against Hamas. And how the US becomes complicit in the killing when sending weapons, essentially with no questions asked or commitment from Israel to spare civilian casualties. There are 800 lobbyists for the Weapons manufacturers, and suppliers of war materiel. War crimes are in fact being committed against innocent Palestinian civilians, many of whom are children. We need a real cease fire, and a real plan for what should happen next. Rather an administration of Gaza by the Israelis, there should be an international trusteeship for the city.

THE BRADCAST 11/9/2023: Analysis of the 3rd GOP Presidential Primary Debate (00:57:30)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: The remaining 2024 GOP also-rans gathered for another embarrassing Republican ‘Presidential Primary Debate’ on Wednesday night in Miami, as the front-runner rallied with supporters nearby. The debate was poorly moderated by NBC News, with participants FL Gov. Ron DeSantis, former SC Gov. and Trump’s U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, former NJ Gov. Chris Christie, SC U.S. Senator Tim Scott and Vivek Ramaswamy, aptly described as ‘a right-wing Twitter thread come to life.’ Award-winning Salon columnist HEATHER DIGBY PARTON and ‘DRIFTGLASS’ of the Professional Left Podcast join us for analysis, insight, fact-checking, and snark. The candidates returned to old-fashioned Republican war-mongering, calling for new wars from Israel to Iran to China to Mexico, in a debate that was revealing about the current state of the Republican Party and the GOP’s failing culture wars, with the spectre of Donald Trump hanging over all. We also cover Democrats’ remarkable election victories earlier in the week, ongoing threats to democracy, ‘scary’ 2024 polls, and much more.
KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: The Left Can Win a Moral Revival (00:59:43)
The corporate powers in the late sixties were seriously freaked out by the powerful momentum of the left. So along came the 1971 Powell Memo, which was a battle plan to retake power. And it worked. On this show, economist professor Michael Zweig talks about his new book Class, Race, and Gender: Challenging the Injuries and Divisions of Capitalism. He explains how virtually all social and environmental issues share the same root. Give a listen.
ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN November 10, 2023 (00:58:00)
Part 1:
We talk with Scott Braddock, editor of the Quorum Report. We discuss school funding in Texas, and the governor’s push for vouchers, which has not been successful, despite 5 Special Sessions of the Texas legislature. Texas has a budget surplus this year, and no teacher raises or additional school funding.
Texas is deploying a microgrid for electrical power for “dispatchable” power. This is power that is not derived from wind or solar sources. That means more investment in fossil fuels.
Part 2:
We talk with Harold Meyerson of the American Prospect, and Bill Curry, former aide to Bill Clinton, and a writer.
We discuss the GOP debate held this week. While Biden may not personally be as popular, his issues are important to Americans. The Republicans are striving to ignore Trump while not criticizing him. The Republican contenders have not yet outdone him in the polls, and it is likely he will be the Republican nominee.

LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: Colette Pichon Battle on Climate Justice Reparations (00:28:00)
What can we learn from the experiences of people living on the frontlines of climate catastrophe? There’s beautiful resistance out there, says Colette Pichon Battle. She is a Louisiana native who began her work in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 when she and so many others lost their homes. A leading voice in climate justice and Black liberation movements, Pichon Battle founded the Gulf Coast Center for Law & Policy (GCCLP) that focused on equitable climate resilience in the Gulf South. Now she has expanded her vision into Taproot Earth, to include work in Appalachia, the global Black diaspora and geographies across the world with a focus on climate migration and Taproot’s work around Global Climate Reparations. According to a 2022 report by the International Organization for Migration, in the US, anywhere from 4.2 to 13.1 million people could become victims of floods by the year 2100. It is the reality that Pichon Battle has been alerting us to for years ” climate change isn’t looming, it’s here. With suffocating orange wildfire smoke, deadly heat waves and drenching rain; with hurricanes, floods and landslides ” we have crossed what some call the change horizon. Can it also be a liberation horizon? Colette believes it can. Today’s program is devoted to her evolving understanding of how the crises of climate, migration, capitalism and over-policing are connected, and what is our work to do. Plus a commentary from Laura.

One of the world’s most knowledgeable persons about the ocean floor – and avid opponent of Deep Sea Mining – is longtime deep sea explorer Sylvia Earle. In June 2023, she appeared for a Fireside Chat at the Explorers Club. The event began with a short film for which Earle collaborated with famed cellist YoYo Ma. ECONOMIC UPDATE: Capitalism Versus Democracy (00:29:00)
On this week’s show, Prof. Wolff presents an analysis of how and why capitalism is an undemocratic economic system. The first half is devoted to the micro-level, namely to the organization of the enterprise (factory, office or store). Its undemocratic character is exposed using examples and empirical evidence. The second half has a macro-level focus that shows how capitalism’s generation of growing income and wealth inequality impels the employer class (a small numerical minority) to use their money politically. Their practice undermines real democracy leaving only its empty forms.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 11/4/23 (00:59:30)
Segment One
We begin with Professor Merrick Masters, Director of Labor, and Professor of Business, and Adjunct Prof. of Political Science at Wayne State University.
We discuss the history of the UAW, and how it has changed to make it more successful in bargaining with employers today. Shawn Fain, the current leader, has used the work climate to take a more militant approach as the collective bargaining stance. It worked. The UAW has negotiated a very good contract to make up for the years in which union workers were disadvantaged in wages and working conditions.
Segment Two
We then speak with Bill Curry and Robert Hockett about anti-semitism on campuses. The problem seems intractable, in that both sides are wrong in this fight. Hamas and the IDF are victimizing the Palestinians, who deserve to have self-determination. Israelis need to feel safe. The policies being pursued now will not bring this about. A two-state solution is needed.

Gay Bradshaw is the founder and director of The Kerulos Center for Nonviolence. She holds doctoral degrees in ecology and psychology and was the first scientist to recognize and diagnose PTSD in Elephants, Chimpanzees, Orcas and other Animals. In this interview / conversation we talk about the beautiful social and emotional intelligent of animal communities in the wild that we have lost during our last 10,00+ years of agricultural, colonial and industrial modernity. And what it would take to regain that which came naturally to humans before that.
In the dazzle of Nature’s extraordinary diversity, it’s easy to overlook how similar we are. Even though humans & other Animals look different on the outside, inside, beneath the fur, fins, feathers, scales & skin we are very much alike, including our brains. Animals ranging from the giant Sperm Whale & the tuxedoed Penguins to the ancient African Elephant & the astonishing Octopus share with human’s brain structures and processes that give us capacities for consciousness, thinking, feeling, loving & dreaming. We also share a common system for raising our young: the evolved nest. Gay Bradshaw

THE BRADCAST 11/2/2023: History’s Greatest Mysteries!– Well, This Week’s, Anyway (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: We dig deep to explore several fascinating, mysterious stories, some of which may remain a riddle for all time. No matter what you may read on the Internet, Brad is not actually dead…as far as he knows. The answer may surprise you. 2024 GOP Presidential candidate Nikki Haley says she supports term limits for member of Congress – – but does she support term limits for the stolen and packed rightwing supermajority on the U.S. Supreme Court? The Biden Administration just unveiled $5 billion in new funding for rural America, the biggest investment in decades. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’
KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: Heather Cox Richardson: Yes, Democracy is Awakening (00:59:57)

It says: we are experiencing economic injustice; how do we get out? On this show Heather Cox Richardson discusses her reasons for optimism with host Burt Cohen. And she explains the continued appeal of Donald Trump.

LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: Josh Paul Reveals The Truth Behind US Arms Supply to Israel (00:28:00)
“We cannot be both against occupation, and for it. We cannot be both for freedom, and against it. And we cannot be for a better world, while contributing to one that is materially worse, writes Josh Paul in his letter of resignation. After 11 years in the State Department’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs ” the entity most responsible for arms transfers to allies and partners ” Paul quit October 18, over increased, indeed expedited arms sales to Israel. In this conversation, one of the first full-length interviews with Paul since his resignation, he sits down with Laura Flanders to discuss why he resigned, his concerns about how the weapons will be used, the unique way that Israel is treated when it comes to US arms sales and why the US approach to creating peace in the Middle East is clearly not working. US double standards and hypocrisy when it comes to human rights crimes, he says, are dangerous for all concerned. All that, plus a commentary for Laura on the war economy.

LITERATURE ALOUD: Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) by Harriet Beecher Stowe ch.17 (00:40:54)
ALAN WATTS:Alan Watts Opens Up About Religion (00:17:54)
