THE POSITIVE MIND: Listening to Ecstasy: The Transformative Power of MDMA pt. 2 (00:57:49)

Listening to Ecstasy: The Transformative Power of MDMA is now on audiobooks. To celebrate that release, we asked Charley back for a more in-depth personal view of how he continues to “listen to ecstasy” in both his professional and personal life. Charley talks about a recent New York Times article that discusses FDA approval for the use of medical MDMA for treatments of PTSD, substance abuse, obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias, eating disorders, depression, end-of-life anxiety, and social anxiety in autistic adults. The FDA is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials that are expected to clear the way for legal use by 2023. In his third appearance on the show, Charley reads pivotal passages that describe the physical and emotional responses that MDMA creates, as well as its bonding effects in both his relationship with his spouse and some courageous couples who are exploring MDMA as an option. We invite you to listen as Kevin, Niseema, and Charley discuss why he calls MDMA “The Chemical of Connection.” Guest – Charley Wininger, LP, LMHC, is a licensed psychoanalyst and mental health counselor specializing in relationships and communication skills. Recognized as The Love Doctor by the New York Times and Newsday, he’s been treating couples and individuals in his Manhattan and Brooklyn offices for 30 years.

“Wininger’s book can throw open cosmic windows in even the most mundane reader”, Tom Robbins, author of nine novels including Even Cowgirls Get the Blues.

THOM HARTMANN Best of 1 Hour: Is Freedom In America Just Freedom To Exploit? (00:58:00)

Will we continue to hold the notion that being free means getting lousy pay, no union, being broken by healthcare expenses and putting our kids to bed hungry? That enforcing freedom means LGBTQ people, racial and religious minorities, and pregnant women live in fear? Should schools teach propaganda? Pompeo and the GOP think so and are looking to strip American schools of every resource that doesnt promote conservative heterosexual lifestyles.

THE CHILDREN’S HOUR: Our Changing Climate (00:58:00)

This time on The Children’s Hour, we learn about climate change from Dr. David Gutzler, professor emeritus at the University of New Mexico in the Earth and Planetary Sciences department with a specialization in climate science.

We learn what causes climate change, and what we can expect in the future if we make no changes. It is especially concerning to children that many adults are not taking the actions needed to stop catastrophes. Dr. Gutzler helps us understand why changing behavior and technologies to address the warming planet, is so difficult for many to adopt.

The Kids Crew wanted to know how they can help save animals from extinction due to climate change, and how they can get global decision-makers to address the crisis of their lifetimes. We also find out about melting ice sheets, and how the added water to our oceans will impact communities worldwide. Kids are leaders in the climate change movement today. We hear music honoring our beautiful planet, the activists who are standing up for future generations. This show is mixed with inspiring music to motivate listeners to care about our Planet Earth.

HOW MUCH MONEY IS ENOUGH? – The Story of the Mexican Fisherman (00:05:20)

This is one of my favorite stories. It’s about an American businessman and a Mexican fisherman. A lot of people want to make more money so they can live a better life. They tell themselves: “Once I make enough money, then I’ll go live the life I want.” But that’s a mistake. Living the life they want should be accomplished now, not later. They spend the majority of their lives working, but along the way, they often forget what they’re working for. They start to prioritize work and making more money without a reason, and that’s a problem. They just want to have more and more, with no apparent end goal. The Mexican Fisherman story is here to remind you to take a step back, and think about what you’re actually working for, and what you already have. Every so often, you should reflect on and reevaluate your priorities. There is more to life than just work and money after all. So how much is enough?

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 11/29/22 (00:00:00)

On the Show: Doctor John Krystal, psychiatrist and Yale University Professor best known for the discovery of the rapid antidepressant effects of ketamine, joins David to discuss depression, SSRI’s, treatment with ketamine, and much more. Absolutely insane Arizona hearing about the 2022 election goes completely off the rails. Cochise County in Arizona is refusing to certify its election. Under Elon Musk’s leadership, Twitter is no longer enforcing its COVID disinformation policy. Failed former President Donald Trump explodes at 2:30am, demanding that Kari Lake, who lost the Arizona gubernatorial election, be “installed” as governor. Donald Trump’s presence has become so toxic to Republican candidates that he isn’t being allowed anywhere near Georgia Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker’s campaign events. Georgia Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker says that people who protest should be arrested if they continue protesting after 5pm. MyPillow CEO and founder Mike Lindell says he is running for Republican Chairman, challenging Ronna McDaniel.  Voicemail caller seems to think David is still talking about Bernie Sanders.https://davidpakman.com/

WHEN THE BIOMASS HITS THE WIND TURBINE #53: Battle of the Currents (00:28:33)

Dubbed the battle of the currents, this dis-information campaign pitted Thomas Edison against Tesla (and his boss, Westinghouse). Another in our Dead White Scientists series ” find out what happened just over 100 years ago that led us to the electrical system (largely unchanged since then) that we use today.

RADIO ART HOUR: Gregory Whitehead (00:58:00)

American radio artist Gregory Whitehead is featured this week. First we hear his “Shake, Rattle, Roll” work, a radio manifesto dating from 1993. He writes: “I used every category of material at my disposal, and every compositional and editing technique, explored in shorter castaways; digital audio tape was part of my studio by then, used in tension and interplay with my workhorse Otari reel-to-reels. To decay or not to decay, among my questions. Made during a very intense period of two weeks for New American Radio, the hybrid assemblage explores themes of structural entropy in relation to free play; the living dancing with the dead; the bottomless cave mixed with the ephemeral utopia; songs collapsed into screams and scrambles; language elucidated and on the verge of disintegration.” Second tune in “Song For a Headless Apache,” a bit of toy theater from Whitehead from 2004. And finally, “The Bottom of the Mind,” a conversation between a Host and a conjured revolutionary cyclotherapist Guest. Originally broadcast on the BBC as part of the late-night series “Talk to Sleep,” it was commissioned by John Dryden/Goldhawk in 1999 and is an exploration of the ubiquitous radio interview format, yet with Whitehead playing host, guests. and all band instruments.

ALAN WATTS: Stop Thinking about Life -1968 full lecture (00:22:56)

Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was a British philosopher, writer, and speaker, best known as an interpreter and populariser of Eastern philosophy for a Western audience. Born in Chislehurst, England, he moved to the United States in 1938 and began Zen training in New York. Pursuing a career, he attended Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, where he received a master’s degree in theology. Watts became an Episcopal priest in 1945, then left the ministry in 1950 and moved to California, where he joined the faculty of the American Academy of Asian Studies. Watts gained a large following in the San Francisco Bay Area while working as a volunteer programmer at KPFA, a Pacifica Radio station in Berkeley. Watts wrote more than 25 books and articles on subjects important to Eastern and Western religion, introducing the then-burgeoning youth culture to The Way of Zen (1957), one of the first bestselling books on Buddhism. In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), Watts proposed that Buddhism could be thought of as a form of psychotherapy and not a religion. He considered Nature, Man and Woman (1958) to be, “from a literary point of view—the best book I have ever written.” He also explored human consciousness, in the essay “The New Alchemy” (1958), and in the book The Joyous Cosmology (1962). Towards the end of his life, he divided his time between a houseboat in Sausalito and a cabin on Mount Tamalpais. Many of his books are now available in digital format and many of his recorded talks and lectures are available on the Internet. According to the critic Erik Davis, his “writings and recorded talks still shimmer with a profound and galvanizing lucidity.

THE BRADCAST 11/25/22  (00:58:00)

Encore: Original air-date 11/10/2022. On today’s ‘BradCast’: If the Republican Party wins a narrow majority in the U.S. House following this week’s nowhere-near-a-red-wave midterm elections, will it have been because of gerrymandering? Redistricting expert and author DAVID DALEY, Senior Fellow at FairVote, explains how if Republicans gain the majority, it will be thanks to gaming the electorate through both partisan and racial gerrymandering, with the help of corrupt courts. Daley describes the history of aggressive, frequently unlawful and unconstitutional gerrymandering by GOP legislatures in several ‘red’ states, aided by corrupt rulings from the U.S. Supreme Court and several GOP-dominated state supreme courts. Daley discusses how Republicans have also hijacked independent redistricting commissions in several states, successfully gaming the system to take more House seats than fair maps would allow them in their quest to entrench themselves in permanent minority rule. Also today: New data indicates inflation appears to be easing, which is good news for American families, but it’s bad news according to Fox ‘News’. Control of Congress next year and several other key, high-profile races remain undecided as tabulation continues, some with razor-thin margins. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 11/25/22 (00:58:59)

Segment One

We begin with David Dayen to talk about the proliferation of “dollar stores” in the United States. There are more than 35,000 dollar stores in the country, and they all take advantage of the increase in the number of people who are ‘downscaling’ their purchases. Where cheap and shoddy goods are a replacement for quality. This is part of a trend which includes ‘minute clinics’, and similar kinds of establishments. This is an example of the stratification of wealth and the proliferation of private equity acquisitions that are consuming huge parts of the American economy.

Segment Two

We then catch up with with Jesse Eisinger to discuss how wealthy people avoid paying taxes. There are many strategies, but the outcome is the same; the very wealthy pay far less than their fair share of taxes. This undermines function of government as well as society.

THE BRADCAST 11/24/22: ‘BradCast’ 11/24/2022 Data expert Tom Bonier on getting the 2022 election results right (00:57:30)

Encore: original air-date 11/11/2022. On today’s ‘BradCast’: It’s not a surprise that Fox ‘News’ deluded itself and its viewers into believing that the 2022 Election would be a ‘red wave’ for Republicans. But it is surprising and disappointing that the corporate media got the story so badly wrong, as well, failing or choosing not to see the ground-level election data clearly. TOM BONIER of the Democratic data research firm TargetSmart got it right. Over the last several months, on this show and elsewhere, Bonier spelled out his analysis of the data, which showed growing Democratic voter engagement, driven by backlash against Republicans and rightwing extremism, the rightwing supermajority on the US Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, and Trump-backed 2020 election deniers, ultimately boosting Democrats across the nation. Bonier explains how a flood of sketchy Republican polling in the last month of the campaign clearly warped polling averages, influencing the corporate media’s narrative in ways that benefitted Republicans, the potential affect that had on voter turnout in key races, and his frank assessment of the structural forces that pushed the corporate media into getting it all so very wrong. Also today: A look into the ‘red tsunami’ and other ultimately false narratives about crime and inflation relentlessly hyped by Fox ‘News’ and establishment media. Plus the latest reported results out of still-undecided critical races for U.S. Senate and state offices in Arizona and Nevada…

TUC Archives – The Underground History of the Gold Rush (00:29:00)

This is part of the history of a city, grown from 16 houses on sand dunes in 1850 to the largest city on the Pacific Coast in only 30 years. The book, Imperial San Francisco by Dr. Gray Brechin, is one of the few examples of a scholarly dissertation that becomes a very popular book. Imperial San Francisco brings to light the huge sacrifices extracted from the surrounding land by large cities, from Babylon to the Italian city states to the instant cities of North America. This program focuses on the Gold Rush and the early conflicts between mining and farming. Next week well talk about the valleys flooded and the rivers diverted to bring water to SF. Was it worth it? And really also by extension – what was it worth and for whom. This is a provocative, intriguing and unusual way at looking at a city. Especially at one everybody loves – San Francisco the beautiful the dream of travelers and immigrants.

This interview was recorded on August 11,2000, and and comes with an update that shows how contemporary many of the issues are. Gray Brechin is visiting scholar in the UC Berkeley Department of Geography and has embarked on a new project that continues to give him pleasure and inspiration. He and a team of researchers are chronicling the often forgotten works of the 1930s and 40s New Deal. The website of the livingnewdeal dot org shows the record of a lost society of a once intensely public spirited America. They have so far mapped more than 17,000 sites across the US and now, in 2022, it amounts to more than 100 sites in every state. All this both in contrast as well as inspirations to the current New Deal.

LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: Busting the Thanksgiving Myth: Native Sovereignty & the Red Road (00:28:00)

Pilgrims, Indians, the myth of the grateful colonized person ” its been at the core of a persistent but false Thanksgiving narrative that has distorted the true relationship between Indigenous Peoples and white colonizers dating back to Plymouth Rock. As many of us observe Thanksgiving and Indigenous Peoples Day, the new federal holiday, Judith LeBlanc, executive director of the Native Organizers Alliance, reminds us that people are questioning. In the midst of a national reckoning with white supremacy and colonial history, Indigenous people are demanding a new relationship with DC ” honoring the traditional, legal, and moral rights of Native nations. In 2021, a group of Native organizers invited Laura to travel with a 25-foot totem pole from the Lummi Nation in Washington State to Washington D.C. stopping for ceremonies in communities under threat and gathering messages for the Biden-Harris administration. In DC they held a historic meeting with Interior Secretary Deb Haaland. Alex Carey wrote that the people of the US have been subjected to an unparalleled, expensive, 3/4 century long propaganda effort designed to expand corporate rights by undermining democracy and destroying the unions. The 20th century, he wrote, is marked by three historic developments: the growth of democracy via the expansion of the franchise, the growth of corporations, and the growth of propaganda to protect corporations from democracy. Careys unique view of US history goes back to World War I and ends with the Reagan era. Noam Chomsky dedicated his book Manufacturing Consent to the memory of Alex Carey. Chomsky says that the Australian sociologist would have written the definitive history of propaganda in the US, had he lived to complete his work. This is a fairly complex production with many voices, historic sound clips, and source material. The program has been used by writers and students of history and propaganda. Alex Carey: Taking the Risk out of Democracy, Corporate Propaganda VS Freedom and Liberty with a foreword by Noam Chomsky was published by the University of Illinois Press in 1995.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 11/23/22 – repeat (00:55:46)

AMERICA WORKS: Dolores Fortuna, Professional Potter. Galena, Illinois (00:10:26)

The respected profession potter Dolores Fortuna, head of Fortuna Pottery in Galena, Illinois, is interviewed in her studio by folklorist Meredith McGriff. Fortuna, whose career includes teaching at the Art Institute of Chicago, talks about how she discovered her love of pottery as a student at University of Chicago. She recalls how she was instrumental in creating cooperative networks and studio spaces for artists in Chicago and Virginia, and how, when she moved to Galena about 20 years ago, she worked with the area’s large community of potters to establish annual “pottery tours.” These tours bring members of the public—who are also potential customers–directly into scores of potters’ studios. She speaks eloquently about what being an artist means to her. As Fortuna speaks, you can hear the gentle hiss of her kiln as it cycles on and off in the background.

RADIO ART HOUR: Nicholas Collins (00:58:00)

This week “The Radio Art Hour” features the work of Nicolas Collins, born March 26, 1954 in New York City, a composer of mostly electronic music and former student of Alvin Lucier. He received a B.A. and M.A. from Wesleyan University. Tune in for his “The Spark Heard ‘Round the World” from the New American Radio archives (at wavefarm.org), and also for a 2014 interview with Collins about his “Pea Soup to Go” app. “The Spark Heard ‘Round the World” is a sonic portrait of the world as revealed through electromagnetic phenomena. It is shaped out of the tremendous buzz, hum, and squawk of the international communications systems: commercial FM and AM, short-wave and long-wave transmissions, HAM and CB radio, public service bands, Morse code, telex and other coded signals. Later hear about “Pea Soup To Go,” a free streaming audio web application that generates an ever-changing domestic sound art installation on any computer. Premiered in 1974, “Pea Soup” creates a self-stabilizing feedback network of microphones and speakers that tunes itself to the architectural acoustics of the space and responds to events “instrumental performances, ambient sounds, human movement, even air currents” with swooping flights of sound.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 11/21/22 (00:54:17)

On the Show: A new batch of explosive COVID vaccine disinformation spreads, related to a study that is 8 months old, but has been fixated on by a number of content creators. Failed Arizona Republican gubernatorial nominee Kari Lake says that the “fight” against “what happened” will continue, even though what happened is that her opponent received more votes. Marrick Garland’s Department of Justice announces a special counsel to investigate Donald Trump’s possible crimes. Failed former President Donald Trump absolutely loses it in a speech about the announcement of a special counsel to investigate him. As the December 6 Georgia Senate runoff approaches, Republican candidate Herschel Walker is increasingly incoherent, while Democratic incumbent Raphael Warnock is increasingly measured and coherent. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Kari Lake are now very clearly lobbying to be Donald Trump’s Vice Presidential running mate in 2024. A new editorial from Keigh Naughton argues that Donald Trump may not even make it to the 2024 Republican primaries unless things change dramatically. Donald Trump has been unbanned from Twitter by new owner Elon Musk. Voicemail caller asks David whether he is spanking his daughter, or his wife (David is not married).

THE BRADCAST 11/18/22: Election 2022 – Dems win control of U.S. Senate; 2020 GOP election liars lose (00:58:00)

Encore: original air-date 11/14/2022. On today’s ‘BradCast’: Although key races in the critical 2022 Election remain undecided, including control of the U.S. House, the Democrats have held on to their razor-thin, 50-50 U.S. Senate majority, thanks to victories for Sen. Mark Kelly in AZ and Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto in NV. Political strategist Dante Atkins explains why Democrats must win the upcoming senate run-off election in Georgia between Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) and Herschel Walker (R), and why a 51-49 Senate is crucial for the Biden Administration to enact even more policies to help working families and fortify democracy. Voters around the country also rejected all Trump-endorsed 2020 Election liars running for Secretaries of State in battleground states. We also call out the Republican Party, corporate media, and even some on the lazy far-left who ignored the data to insist the election would result in a ‘red wave’. Callers weigh in on what last week’s lack of ‘red wave’ means for both Democrats and Republicans, and whether Republicans will ever break free of Donald Trump’s spell, which is destroying them and our democracy along with it. But not this week, at least.

EARTH RIOT RADIO: How To Handle COP27: Despair, Panic & Cunning (00:29:00)

The investor class is not just callous and probably criminal. They seem to have no idea what Justice means.

The nations and tribal people of the global south, struggling with drought, floods, fires, mudslides, sea-rise, aka Climate Chaos… are in Egypt calling out to the toxic profiteers in the north and getting endless negotiations and debt-trap loans. They are an echo from centuries of colonization and slavery. The rich countries cannot understand why Justice is necessary. They remind me of Tsar Nicholas. Power has made them so uncurious that they won’t see the revolution coming.

ATTITUDE WITH ARNIE ARNESEN 11/18/22 (00:58:00)

Part 1:

We talk with Harvey Kronberg, publisher of the Quorum Report in Texas. We discuss the governor’s race, which ended with Abbott’s victory. Much of the credit goes to Dave Carney, campaign strategist, who was successful in rebranding Beto O’Rourke as the loser. O’Rourke was weak, and did not fight back. Voter suppression was also a big factor.

Part 2:

We talk with Bill Curry and Robert Hockett about Biden’s viability for 2024, against Trump or another, stronger Republican candidate for the presidential run. Although Biden has been very successful in passing needed legislation and installing competent agency heads, the Democratic leadership in total is not progressive enough. Biden as a person is not very dynamic. The House is going to be Republican controlled, and Biden will need to be perceived as stronger, personally. His age is against him.

THE BRADCAST 11/17/22: Allison Gill of ‘Mueller, She Wrote’ updates Trump’s many criminal/civil cases (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Although some races remain undecided, the media projects Republicans will win back the U.S. House majority next year with a razor-thin margin. Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she will stay in Congress but not seek a leadership role next session, passing the torch to a new generation of leaders. Progressive Rep. Karen Bass will be the first female mayor of Los Angeles. But potential accountability for disgraced former Pres. Donald Trump will have to wait until after the U.S. Senate runoff in Georgia on December 6, because Dept. of Justice guidelines barring overt action in politically-related cases are still in effect. DR. ALLISON GILL, of the notorious ‘Mueller, She Wrote’ Twitter account and podcast, delivers a status update on the many criminal and civil probes, indictments and lawsuits against Trump – – far too many to list here – – and new court developments that were buried by the tsunami of news over the last weeks of the 2022 midterm elections. Dr. Gill explains the litigation timeline and next steps for each of the multiple Trump investigations, why it is likely to be a matter of weeks or even months before any potential indictments can be brought against Trump, and much more. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: The American Tradition of a Christian Left (00:59:40)

Though the angry white supremacist right grabs today’s news, the truth is the Christian Left has much deeper roots in American history. According to the Reverend Quardricos Bernard Driskell, the religious left has always been part of the fabric of America. Counter to the rights practices, Jesus was about justice, compassion, and empathy. As the intolerant right keeps shedding believers, there’s a renewal starting on the religious left.

Were grassroots activists able to defend democracy in 2022? For this post-election roundtable, Laura convenes organizers to discuss some of the critical takeaways from this year’s election. What have grassroots activists on the frontlines of our democracy learned from this significant midterm election when so many of their issues have been weaponized ” from criminal justice, the Native vote, womens self determination and racism. Laura is joined by Sakira Cook, the Co-Interim Vice President of Color of Change, who works to overhaul the criminal justice system and safeguard democracy; Jacqueline DeLen is an enrolled member of the Isleta Pueblo and is an attorney with the Native Rights Fund where she helped lead field hearings across Indian Country on Native American voting rights, and Heidi Sieck, the co-founder of #VOTEPROCHOICE and an organizer in the reproductive rights and feminist movement for over 30 years. Democrats had high expectations on how the GOPs rollbacks on many fronts would mobilize voters. What worked, and what didnt? LOPATE AT LARGE: David Fenton on The Activist’s Media Handbook (00:52:11)

David Fenton has been the driving force behind some of the most important and history-making campaigns of the last 50 years, from the No-Nukes concerts with Bruce Springsteen in 1979, to the campaigns to free Nelson Mandela and end apartheid in the late 1980s, exposing the dangers of toxic chemicals in our food, the long battle to legalize marijuana and end racist drug laws, the misinformation in Washington during the Bush era in the 2000s, and recent campaigns that successfully banned fracking in New York and alerted the public to the climate crisis, including the environmental impact of Bitcoin. DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 11/17/22 (00:00:00)

On the Show: Rick Sanchez, veteran journalist and Emmy Award-winner who is the co-founder, CEO and President of Agua Media, joins David to discuss Latino voters and lack of Latino representation in the media. Republicans have taken control of the House of Representatives in the 2022 midterm elections. Almost twice as many Republicans died from COVID compared to Democrats, raising questions about how this could have affected the midterm election results. Former Vice President Mike Pence participates in a bizarre, cringeworthy town hall with CNN, hosted by Jake Tapper. Mike Pence seems to officially abandon Donald Trump, saying on Fox News that there will be “better choices” than Trump in 2024. Radical failed Republican Congressman Madison Cawthorn has stopped working, already leaving his Washington DC office, despite still being a Congressman until January. Georgia Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker is completely incoherent at his latest campaign event, ranting about vampires and werewolves. Ivanka Trump is refusing to participate in Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. A homophobic and transphobic voicemail caller is upset at being called homophobic and transphobic.

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: The Right Questions for Legal Empowerment, with Naomi Campbell (00:28:00)

“I think people assume that you must be curious in order to ask questions. We actually see that it’s the reverse: that when people come up with their own questions they become curious.” ~ Naomi Campbell

The Right Question Institute (RQI), works to build a more just and equitable democracy by strengthening people’s ability to ask questions and participate in decisions that affect them. As RQI puts it, “When people of all ages learn to ask the right questions, it leads to feeling a new sense of agency, confidence & power.” Naomi Campbell directs RQI’s Legal Empowerment program, leading RQI’s efforts to promote the adoption of the Right Question Strategy in legal practice settings serving low-income communities. The work is aimed at offering a simple way to integrate capacity-building into practice at the micro-level, as part of a systemic change strategy at the macro-level. That sounded to me like a serious curiosity practice in service of community transformation and I wanted to know more.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 11/16/22 (00:56:04)

Failed former President Donald Trump announces his 2024 presidential run at Mar-a-Lago, repeating many of his tired tropes in front of a visibly bored audience. Donald Trump’s 2024 announcement was so boring, people tried to leave the room but were blocked by Mar-a-Lago staff. Donald Trump’s 2024 announcement was so horrible, even Fox News cut away. Ukraine has accidentally fired missiles at Poland, presumably intended to strike Russia or Russian forces. MyPillow CEO and Founder Mike Lindell is even more off the deep end over the 2022 election results. Yet another poll shows Ron DeSantis leading Donald Trump for the 2024 Republican Presidential nomination. Radical Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene is confronted about Donald Trump’s 2022 endorsement losses, and her answer is priceless. Former Democratic Congresswoman and former Democrat Tulsi Gabbard completes her transformation as she is hired by Fox News. Fox News propagandist Sean Hannity’s sulking admission that Kari Lake lost her 2022 election. Voicemail caller asks why left-to-right political awakenings result in people going off the deep end, while right-to-left awakenings bring people to reason.

THE CHILDREN’S HOUR: Coyotes (00:58:00)

This time on The Children’s Hour, we learn about a canine that is thriving across North America: coyotes. They may look like wild dogs, but we learn from biologist Zoe Rossman that they are quite different from our friendly house pets. Coyotes are opportunists, and will eat whatever they can: from garbage to cats. Originally from the desert southwestern United States and Mexico, coyotes are now found in every city in America. Their haunting barks, yips and eerie howls sound spooky at night. But coyotes serve an important role in our ecosystem, including helping keep rodents in check. The wily ways of coyotes have inspired stories for thousands of years, and one from the Pueblo of Santa Ana in New Mexico has been turned into a story by Emmett “Shkeme” Garcia, illustrated by Victoria Pringle. Beth from our Kids Crew reviews the book, Coyote and the Sky: How the Sun, Moon, and Stars Began. This episode is mixed with great music, and loaded with facts about coyotes.

JUST SOLUTIONS: How We Win the Civil War (00:28:00)

In his new book How We Win the Civil War: Securing a Multiracial Democracy and Ending White Supremacy for Good, best-selling author Steve Phillips charts the way forward for progressives and people of color after four years of Trump, arguing that Democrats must recognize the nature of the fight were in, which is a contest between democracy and white supremacy left unresolved after the Civil War. Steve Phillips is the founder of Democracy in Color and host of the podcast of the same name. In his new book, he argues that the time has come to finish the conquest of the Confederacy and all that it represents.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 11/14/22 (00:00:00)

On the Show: Despite endless predictions from Republicans about an inevitable 2022 “red wave,” Democrats have retained control, at minimum, of the Senate. The Georgia runoff between Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker is now about making Senator Joe Manchin irrelevant. 18-29-year-old voters saved democracy in 2022, canceling out the right-leaning vote of the 65+ group. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis now leads Donald Trump in the 2024 betting markets on the question of who will be the 2024 Republican Presidential nominee. Former President Mike Pence fully turns on Donald Trump, now that it is convenient to do so, saying Trump was “reckless” on January 6 and “endangered” his family. Extremist lunatic Republicans pray for a new election at polling places in Arizona in response to the likely loss of Republican Gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake. Fox News propagandist suggests a conspiracy theory so insane, even Kari Lake only sort of accepts it. Donald Trump appears to admit to a major crime during a meltdown about Ron DeSantis, claiming he “sent in the FBI.” Donald Trump demands a new election in Arizona during a misspelled rant about the “electron.” Republican Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker makes a number of incoherent statements after learning his race would go to a runoff on December 6. Christian Walker, Herschel Walker’s son, correctly points out the absurdity of Donald Trump’s 2022 endorsements. Voicemail caller obsessed with COVID believes David should be imprisoned for coverage of masks and vaccines.

THE BRADCAST 11/11/22 (00:57:30)

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 11/11/22 (00:58:00)

Part 1:

We talk with Scott Braddock, dean of the Austin Press Corp, about voting in Texas. Suburbs were more favorable for the Democrats, though turnout was low. This can be explained, in part, with the disgust that people feel for all politicians, and the toxicity of politics.

Part 2:

We talk with Harold Meyerson and Bill Curry about the elections. Trump may be gone, but there are likely more genial examples of his ilk. For Democrats, it is important for them to listen to voters, learn what they want.

THE BRADCAST 11/10/22: Redistricting expert David Daley on how SCOTUS helped steal the U.S. House for Republicans (00:58:00)

Segment One

We begin with Luke Goldstein, of the Open Markets Institute about Elon Musk’s influence with respect to communications in the US and internationally, and the use of StarLink. With Twitter, this is a form of vertical integration. In future, there will be more need of satellite services. How can Musk’s influence be minimized, and prevented from dominating everything? The US government, and other governments, must enforce the anti monopoly laws.

Segment Two

We then talk with Stephanie Hanes about energy storage, specifically storing the earth’s energy in the form of ‘sand batteries’. Using the earth’s energy as a shared heat source, the heat can be used to produce other energy. This involves drilling deep holes, to capture the earth’s heat. We discuss experiments now being done.

LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: D.A. Larry Krasner Facing Impeachment: Criminal Justice Reform in the Crosshairs (00:28:00)

Can a predominantly white state legislature overturn the votes of a predominantly Black city? Larry Krasner, Philadelphia’s District Attorney was elected in 2017 on a reform agenda and has been targeted by a GOP backlash ever since. This October, on the last day of business before the 2022 midterms, Republican State Rep. Martina White filed articles for impeachment. If the initiative wins a majority in the GOP-dominated state house, Krasner will have to stand trial in the Senate. To discuss the effort to impeach Krasner, the threat posed to democracy, and how, despite the news reporting, Krasner’s reform initiatives work, Laura is joined by the D.A. himself, along with Sara Lomax-Reese of URL Media and Charles Ellison, host of WURD Radio’s Reality Check program. How has the GOP weaponized the issue of violence to smear criminal justice reform and the Democrats pushing for change? And what is being done about the disregard being shown to Black voters who voted heavily for the DA and largely continue to support Krasner’s work? And Laura’s closing commentary on how the story’s being covered ” or not. Music Spotlight: Love One Another by Crystal Waters and Soul Central from Quantize Recordings.

Conquering Fear by Alan Watts. In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), Watts proposed that Buddhism could be thought of as a form of psychotherapy and not a religion. He considered Nature, Man, and Woman (1958) to be, “from a literary point of view—the best book I have ever written.” He also explored human consciousness and psychedelics in the essay “The New Alchemy” (1958) and in the book The Joyous Cosmology (1962).

ECONMIC UPDATE: Capitalism vs Socialism is NOT Markets vs Planning (00:29:00)

This week on Economic Update, Profl Wolff shows how the economics of existing capitalist and socialist economies make use of both markets and planning. The opposition of markets and planning is largely false and has worked to distract students and observers of economic systems from better differentiations such as how they differently organize their workplaces: hierarchical in the case of capitalist, democratic in the case of worker cooperatives. Some major implications of this critique of the “planning versus market” obsession are discussed in relation to the US, Soviet Union, and China.

RADIO ART HOUR: Manuel Rocha Iturbide, Rachel Rosenthal (00:59:12)

“Hieros Logos” by Manuel Rocha Iturbide (2010), introduced by Jos Alejandro Rivera, and Rachel Rosenthal’s “Search for the New World Pataphysical Order”A Meditation in Time of War” are featured today. First, in 2010, Manuel Rocha Iturbide created “Hieros Logos,” a radiophonic sound work originally commissioned by Radio Clsica of Spain in collaboration with the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofa. The piece was presented at the Alicante Music Festival in 2010 and was also broadcast on Kuntstradio in 2011. At its core, the work sources the human voice as material for an abstract and imagined landscape, that begins with the sounds of a baby, an old man, and a woman. The piece then flows into field recordings and rhythmic bits, where isolated syllables contribute to what Rocha Iturbide calls, invented electroacoustic sound poetry. “Hieros Logos” displays Rocha Iturbides masterful treatment of granular synthesis, where snippets of vocals pan seamlessly from left to right, swarming around the listener. Clouds of phonetic elements and beds of time-stretched drones emerge, all of which transform any meaning of language into its musical, emotive, and intuitive elements. The arc of the piece moves from the individual voice to collective instances that include those of group prayer, labor songs, and poetry. Possible opportunities to decipher the content of these interactions are presented; however, any signification of meaning remains just out of reach. This is perhaps due to the large spaces that the voices were recorded in, the layering of multiple conversations, and the electronic processing with filters, delays, and reverbs. Alternatively, listeners are led down long corridors of melody and feeling, lined with shifting, sonic exchanges that fade delicately into a distant nothingness. In essence, Hieros Logos questions the sanctity of the word as the supreme container of knowledge, and instead, highlights the spiritual undertones of the voice that exist before the word is given meaning. – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Art Fellow 2022, Jos Alejandro Rivera. Also featured is Rachel Rosenthal’s “Search for the New World Pataphysical Order, A Meditation in Time of War” from the New American Radio archive. What has happened to us? After the promise of 1990, we find ourselves catapulted back to the time when brute force solved all problems. 1991 is an historic blight. Rosenthal goes on a tour of her own mind in an attempt to discover the seeds of universal folly. The “New World Order” promises to fall in step with Pere Ubu, wading and waddling in his Pataphysics philosophy, shouting “merde!” at the scud fragments raining on the sands of Eden, as Mere Ubu knits little sweaters for crude coated cormorants. All voices and sounds by Rachel Rosenthal with sound design by Dain Olsen. Commissioned by New American Radio.

THE BRADCAST 11/4/22: Guest: Alan Minsky of Progressive Democrats of America on saving democracy (00:57:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: As we have covered extensively, the critical 2022 midterm elections next Tuesday, November 8, could be the last fully free and fair elections in America. The last jobs report released before next week’s elections shows a robust economy with strong jobs growth that is slowing slightly due to the Federal Reserve raising interest rates to combat inflation. But the corporate media’s sole focus on temporary inflation has failed to inform voters about the pernicious threat to democracy itself in the midterm elections, with survival of American democracy quite literally on the line in the 2022 elections and the 2024 Presidential election. Hundreds of Republican election deniers are running for key offices across the country and openly plotting to engineer the GOP into permanent minority rule by subverting free and fair elections. But many progressive voters don’t appear to fully grasp the stakes or the historic nature of this moment and the need to push back against authoritarianism. ALAN MINSKY, Executive Director of Progressive Democrats of America and a longtime Bernie Sanders supporter, explains why he believes no person of conscience can sit out this midterm election. Minsky warns that reactionary Republicans are now ’emboldened to take down American democracy in their efforts to create a permanent ruling party,’ and makes the progressive case for voting for the (decidedly imperfect) Democratic Party to preserve both democracy and the economy. If young voters turn out in similar numbers to 2018 and 2020, then ‘we can change this country for the better. But we have to preserve our democracy to leave that opportunity open,’ Minsky says. ‘We have to preserve democracy now and strengthen it. Let’s win this thing.’

THE BRADCAST 11/3/22 (00:57:30)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Forewarned is forearmed, and it’s important that you, the American public, and corporate media understand what is going on before the fog of chaos overwhelms all of us next Tuesday. We continue our focus on next Tuesday’s critical midterm elections with new reporting that underscores Republicans’ national strategy to create chaos in the 2022 election. Republicans have launched an organized, coordinated campaign to wreak havoc in the 2022 elections around the nation, manufacturing chaos that in turn they will use as a patina of ‘evidence’ to launch legal challenges to overturn election outcomes they don’t like. The coordinated strategy is a re-run of and improvement on their 2020 election theft playbook, and is operated by the same Trump cronies and grifters who fomented the post-election chaos in 2020 that led to the January 6 insurrection. They have been training MAGA Republicans to canvass door-to-door to intimidate voters in at least 23 states, collecting information that can be used to challenge individual voters’ qualifications, ways to monkey-wrench the voting process at polling places, other actions to help create extra-long lines on Election Day, and ways to challenge tallying and reporting of results. Also today: Illinois Republicans sued to block the tabulation of perfectly legal military and overseas ballots that are postmarked by Election Day but arrive within two-weeks as allowed by state law. Some new developments in several court cases and investigations involving Donald Trump. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: This is the Best Analysis of the Coming Election (00:59:44)

Thinking with history; on this show political broadcast veteran John Kosinski demonstrates how so many people running just want to be showmen on TeeVee. He explains why so many are drawn to Trumpism: a desire to be heard and respected. Democrats often miss that. Included are many remarkable audio samples from the past illustrating the key points. Racism today is more overt than ever. Can we ever restore our founders’ vision of the common good? And yes it’s a heavy lift!

Best of ARNIE ARNESEN 11/5/22 (00:59:29)

Segment One

We begin with Diana Green Foster about her research on the effects of abortion, and the effects of being unable to obtain abortion. The effect on women and their families is profound: there is lower self-esteem, higher anxiety, and depression among women who are denied abortion when they request it. This is in addition to the economic effects: higher poverty rates for the women and their children. They also suffer instability, and have a higher exposure to violence.

Segment Two

We then catch up with Michael Mitchell of the Groundwork Collaborative, about how data should be gathered and used, when discussing the economy. Currently, the data does not reflect the quality of workers’ lives. Workers themselves should be asked about their struggles, and what kinds of factors are are important, not just the ‘captains of industry.

LIGHTLY ON THE GROUND: David Wray on military mental health and substance use (00:27:35)

Today’s guest is a veteran of 29 years in the Navy, his work included serving as Drug and Alcohol Program Adviser on an aircraft carrier and much time in Iraq. His career has shown him the world, and allowed him to help others regain a foothold on theirs. David tells how the military’s view of addiction, substance abuse and co-morbidities such as depression, moral injury, PTSD, and seeking counseling has changed over recent decades. As is true of most who’ve been in battle, David Wray believes military force should be the last resort in any conflict. This would be after all other recourse is exhausted: Diplomatic, Information, Military and Economic. Nobody walks away from combat unchanged. Despite the damage sanctions inflict on civilians, that is preferable to a shooting war. When a shooting war starts, you lose all control over who’s going to get hurt. When you explode things in proximity to humans, often the wrong humans get hurt. This hurts both the soldier and those euphemistically called collateral damage.

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: Why Do They Fear Curiosity? (00:57:43)

The pressure to prevent active curiosity is a curious thing in a democracy. Our guests today are authors Perry Zurin and Dani Bassett whose new book is Curious Minds, The Power of Connection. As they say, acquiring information is insufficient, real knowledge is a network of interconnections. The Trumpist right is actively repressing curiosity which makes us human and enables growth and connection. But there is reason for optimism. Give a listen.

Former President Barack Obama slams Arizona Republican Gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake, as well as Donald Trump, during a campaign rally in Arizona. Former President Bill Clinton perfectly sums up 2022 Republicans’ strategy, which is to anger voters, and then blame Democrats for the things Republicans themselves later destroy while in power. Republican candidate Don Bolduc is confronted about his numerous repetitions of the bogus story that cat litter boxes are being placed in school bathrooms for students who identify as animals. Ohio Democratic Senate candidate Tim Ryan refuses to back down from a Fox News mob audience during a town hall and is actually able to turn them around in real time. DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 11/1/22 (00:56:41)

On the Show: Angelo Carusone, President and CEO of Media Matters, joins David to discuss the right wing echo chamber, Trump’s absence from Fox News, the future of networks like Newsmax and OAN, and much more. In light of the attack on Paul Pelosi, we review data that confirms once again most political violence is right win. David DePape, the man who attacked Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul Pelosi, admits to his political motives and debunks all recent right wing conspiracy theories about the attack. Trumpists are absolutely deranged in response to the attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul Pelosi, claiming the real issue is violence in Democratic-run cities. Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom correctly blames political violence, including the attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul Pelosi, on right wingers. Fox News propagandist Tucker Carlson amplifies Elon Musk’s recent conspiracy theory about the attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul Pelosi. Kanye West continues his unhinged antisemitic tirades, now claiming that a Jewish doctor could have killed him with the medication that was prescribed to him. Donald Trump is completely unhinged in a new interview with conservative Latino media outlet Americano Media. Donald Trump’s interview with friendly host Sebastian Gorka is so bad, even Gorka himself can’t save Trump. Donald Trump is begging the Supreme Court to hide his taxes.
