During this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large, Dr. Gest suggests rather than yield to people’s prejudices, states hold great power to shape public responses and perceptions of demographic change through political institutions.

LONG NOW FOUNDATION: Continuity: Discovering the Lessons behind the World’s Longest-lived Organizations (00:25:47)
One of Long Now’s founding premises is that humanity’s most significant challenges require long-term solutions, including institutions that caretake and guide the knowledge and commitment needed to work over long time scales. However, there are a limited number of organizations that have managed to stay stable over many centuries, and in some cases, over a millennium. Long Now has been informally tracking these organizations for years, and in 2019 formed The Organizational Continuity Project to study long-lived institutions more formally. Alexander Rose, Long Now’s Executive Director, discusses how The Organizational Continuity Project hopes to discover the lessons behind these long-lived organizations and build a discipline of shareable knowledge that will help contemporary institutions, companies, and governments develop into robust, long-lasting structures. In turn, we hope these institutions will be better equipped to address civilizational-scale problems with multi-generational thinking. “Continuity: Discovering the Lessons behind the World’s Longest-lived Organizations” was given on April 20, 02021 as part of Long Now’s Seminar series. The series was started in 2003 to build a compelling body of ideas about long-term thinking from some of the world’s leading thinkers. The Seminars take place in San Francisco and are curated and hosted by Stewart Brand.

RADIO ART HOUR: Rachel Rosenthal, Michael Trigilio (00:58:00)
This week radio art works from Rachel Rosenthal and Michael Trigilio, and introduced by Wave Farm Radio Art Fellow Jess Spear, are featured. First, “filename:FUTURFAX by Rachel Rosenthal. Like the best of dystopian fiction, “filename:FUTURFAX” (1990) at first takes us in with the premise that the future is a technological utopia where problems of hunger, deprivation, uncertainty, and unhappiness have been solved forever. The narrator receives a fax from a future civilization after a great crash, sent through a time warp, written and clarified by a computer operated by a team of scientists sending good wishes. Whispers of uncertainty slip in when you hear that art is no longer made after being deemed superfluous and subversive by the lawmakers (they do tell jokes, however). Recalling 1984 and Brave New World, the future civilization is founded on total technocratic control and scientific progress, having become de-deified and losing religion because they control all the natural functions formerly ascribed to mysterious divinities. And then moral and social decorum are maintained thanks to the implants (should we say that?). Soon its revealed that some people suffer incredible fits of boredom, and some, labeled deviants, even escape to the world outside the domed structures of the SSC (self-sufficient communities). These deviants have set up a parallel civilization, one that our scientist reports with great astonishment appears to worship the very environment, in spite of the great hardships imposed by the natural world and the ruins of 20th century civilization. Humanity, at this unknown future date, is reduced to a population of comfortable citizens living in an environment where every element, including themselves, is controlled, and a group eking out an existence and sacrificing themselves in the work of making amends with the natural world, often becoming sick or dying during cooperative clean-ups of the ruins.
filename:FUTURFAX is emblematic of Rosenthal’s prominent themes of environmentalism and animal rights in her work, particularly the importance of preserving some areas of the earth from human impact and control. In spite of its initial optimistic feel, the work ultimately served as an expression of Rosenthal’s despair. When working on the piece, she said in a 1992 interview with OMNI magazine, I was continually sobbing and feeling absolutely depressed by and frightened at what I was saying…I can’t bear to see this extraordinary planet lose its wildness and become a human cybernetic machine as it will be if humans prevail. Indeed, the messengers from the future identify the 1980s as the last possible point for positive change, but also recognize that their message won’t change the future they live in. Its only in a post-script from the messaging computer that we learn the inhabitants of this future are all women, none capable of reproduction. The extinction of humanity is only a matter of time. – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2020/2021, Jess Speer.
Then tune in “The Starve Zone” by Michael Trigilio. Neighborhood Public Radio is a project led by Lee Montgomery, Linda Arnejo, Michael Trigilio, and Jon Brumit that creates short-term microbroadcasting stations in communities and supports community and artist-created content for broadcast. The project’s name, acronym, and even logo are intended as critiques of National Public Radio, making the argument that truly non-commercial and community-based programming can be more powerful and meaningful to people than corporate-sponsored public content. In a 2005 interview with Punk Planet, founder Lee Montgomery admitted, on a certain level, what we are trying to emulate is what National Public Radio used to be, contrasting coverage of Vietnam War protests by National Public Radio in the 1970s in which reporters immersed in the protests letting the people around them tell their stories, to contemporary coverage of global protests against the Iraq War consisting of brief reports from journalists in different sites reporting from above the crowd and little more than estimates of numbers of people. The Neighborhood Public Radio project has riffed on other National Public Radio themes, producing a crowdsourced show called American Life that included broadcasts from Portable Radio Instruments (PRI), a riff on distributor Public Radio International and its popular show This American Life.
Since its founding in 2004, Neighborhood Public Radio installations have taken place in galleries, museums, art festivals, and store fronts in a wide array of cities including San Francisco, San Diego, Chicago, and Hamburg, and were included as part of the Whitney Biennial in 2008. Installations often include partnerships with local community organizations and artists to create programming, workshops on creating transmitters and other electronic instruments, performances, and interactive broadcasting events that invite the community to be part of the stations content.
Over the course of the 2004 installation at Southern Exposure Gallery in San Francisco, artist Michael Trigilio as his alter-ego, a vitriolic common sense political commentator, Michael Starve, hosted episodes of a call-in political talk show called The Starve Zone. Topics included welfare, religion, poverty, homelessness, and the upcoming election between John Kerry and George W. Bush, including an episode in which he offered live commentary on a presidential debate. In this episode, Starve engages with callers about the lingering effects of war on individuals, societies, and political dealings, and rants about the stultifying effects of mainstream media, including National Public Radio and trivialities presented as front-page news. – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2020/2021, Jess Speer.

TUC RADIO: Michael Parenti on Theocracy and Democracy, Political Uses of Religion (00:29:03)
Michael Parenti says that democracy can’t survive under religious rule “whatever that religion may be.”
Parenti’s warning in this archival recording is as timely and urgently expressed as it was when this speech was first given on April 12, 1987, during the 2nd term of the Reagan administration. This talk is also very funny. With roots in a working class Italian district of New York City and a Ph.D. in political science from Yale, Michael Parenti has become an internationally known writer and lecturer and author of 23 books.

THE BRADCAST 3/25/22 (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: Corrupt Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) says he will vote to confirm President Biden’s nominee, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, as the first black female Supreme Court Justice, but it’s unclear if obstructionist Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) agrees. Justice Clarence Thomas has been released from the hospital, but calls are growing for the corrupt Thomas to be impeached after revelations that his far-right activist wife Ginni sent bonkers text messages to Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, urging him to overturn the 2020 election at the same time that Justice Thomas was ruling on cases seeking to overturn the 2020 election. Thomas was the sole justice to vote against releasing the very White House records that revealed his wife’s involvement in attempts to steal the 2020 election. Because of this sort of corruption and more, the United States has fallen in the annual Freedom House report ranking freedom and liberty around the world. AMY SLIPOWITZ, Freedom House Research Manager and co-author of the 2022 annual report, ‘The Global Expansion of Authoritarian Rule,’ explains their findings showing a years-long decline in global democracy amid a rise in authoritarianism. Slipowitz discusses disturbing anti-democratic trends over the last two decades and the forces at work in the stunning decline in democracies as autocrats gain and consolidate power around the world. She also covers why the US has fallen so low, the January 6 Capitol Insurrection, new voter suppression laws, book bans, and more. Also today: the spike in gas prices triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is increasing Americans’ interest in electric vehicles, including at the US Postal Service.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 3/25/22 (00:57:33)
Part 1:
Serial entrepreneur Harvey Kronberg publishes two online news services, Quorum Report and the Texas Energy Report. We discuss how Texas politics work. Unfortunately, other states often follow Texas lead. We talk about the recent primary for Texas offices, and the effects of having Beto O’Rourke enter the race. Dan Patrick is weaker, Gov. Abbott is weaker. The lawsuit filed by Kelsey Warner has brought O’Rourke publicity, and has opened Abbott to discovery procedure.
Part 2:
Bill Curry, an American lawyer and politician who has been a two-time Democratic nominee for Governor of Connecticut and a White House advisor in the administration of Bill Clinton. He was head of Freeze Voter, a nuclear freeze group. Alex Sammon a staff writer at The American Prospect. He’s a former columnist and feature writer for the New Republic and former contributing politics writer at Pacific Standard. His work has also appeared in n+1, Wired, and Mother Jones. We discuss Sec. Albright, who has died. She was an example of recent diversity of government officials. We also discuss the current SCOTUS hearings for Judge Brown Jackson, as a candidate. These have amply demonstrated the racism of the Republicans, in the questions they have asked, and the manner in which they have behaved toward Judge Jackson. It seems that now that they have everything they wanted in government, they are giddy with their power. It is time for the Democrats to tell the truth as relentlessly as the Republicans lie.

LAW AND DISORDER: Russia, Deescalation And Nuclear Disarmament (00:58:00)
If the U.S. nuclear policy doesn’t change immediately and rapidly we are in a lot of trouble. Seventy-seven years ago, the United States became the first, and so far the only, country to use nuclear bombs when we destroyed the two Japanese cities of Hiroshima and then Nagasaki to frighten the Russians and secure an immediate and unconditional surrender of Japan in World War II. The dropping of these bombs was the first move against Russia that would devolve two years later in 1947 into the Cold War. The threat of nuclear war has never eased and it is now imminent with the fighting in the Ukraine which could draw the U.S. and NATO into a direct conflict with Russia. We are now in a new stage of this war. It has become hot and so perilous it threatens all of humanity, all of earths creatures, with annihilation. Any mistake, any miscalculation would quickly and irretrievably doom us all. This almost happened during the Cuban Missile Crisis where nuclear war was avoided, according to scholars, by luck and decent leadership. What has been the history of attempts to contain and roll back the threat of nuclear war? What has been tried and what is failed? What will it take to get the nine countries who possess nuclear weapons to give them up? The Veterans for Peace organization spelled it out clearly. There should be a no first use policy and nuclear missiles must be taken off hair trigger alert. The United States should rejoin the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, from which George W. Bush and Donald Trump withdrew, respectively. The U.S. should sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Our country should initiate negotiations to reduce and eventually eliminate all nuclear weapons, as required by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, to which the U.S. is a party. To start, there must be a cease-fire in the Ukraine, the withdrawal of Russian forces, and guarantees of Ukrainian sovereignty and Russian security. Guest ” Peter Kuznick is a professor of history at American University and directs the Nuclear Studies Program. at that institution. Peter and Oliver Stone wrote The Untold History of the United States and also produced a showtime documentary series based on the book.
World Peace Through Law: Replacing War with the Global Rule Of Law
In 1945, following World War I and World War II, wars that claimed millions of lives, the nations of the world enacted the United Nations Charter to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war. The Charter prohibits the use of military force except in self-defense after an armed attack by another state or when the Security Council approves it. The five victors of World War II, who became the permanent members of the Security Council, agreed to the Charter because they each received a veto over matters of war and peace. The United States is a party to the 1970 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Nevertheless, it continues to violate the provision of that treaty that requires the parties to move toward the elimination of nuclear weapons. Although he won the Nobel Peace Prize, Barack Obamas administration advanced a policy, which Donald Trump and Joe Biden continued, to develop leaner and meaner nuclear weapons. The proposed U.S. budget calls for nearly $2 trillion over the next 30 years to build two new bomb factories, missiles, planes, submarines and redesigned warheads. In spite of the UN Charter and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, we are now facing the most dangerous threat of nuclear war in the last 60 years.
Guest – James Ranney is a retired Adjunct Professor at Widener Law School, co-founder of the Jeanette Rankin Peace Center, a legal consultant to the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, and a board member of the Project for Nuclear Awareness. Professor Ranney has written a book called World Peace Through Law: Replacing War with the Global Rule of Law. In this book, he calls for arms reduction, including the abolition of nuclear weapons, and global alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, with enforcement mechanisms.

THE BRADCAST 3/24/22 (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: Weekly jobless claims have hit the lowest level since 1969, but did you hear about it? Likely not, as the corporate media is still failing to cover positive news on Biden’s booming economy, which may explain why Biden’s overall approval ratings remain low despite the vast majority of Americans supporting his response to Russia’s war on Ukraine. A group of Georgia voters are contesting the eligibility of far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) to run for re-election in a new legal challenge brought by government accountability group Free Speech For People, based on the 14th Amendment prohibition against anyone who has engaged in insurrection or rebellion from holding federal office. Far-right Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) has been un-endorsed by Donald Trump after urging Trump’s MAGA mob to accept the 2020 election results. Brooks says Trump continues to ask him to remove Biden from office, which may also qualify as sedition. The US Supreme Court remains silent on the condition and whereabouts of Justice Clarence Thomas one week after reporting his hospitalization. Washington Post reports that Justice Thomas’ wife, corrupt far-right activist Ginni Thomas, exchanged dozens of bonkers text messages with Trump’s White House Chief of Staff, Mark Meadows, urging him to find ways to overturn the results of the 2020 election, even as her husband was ruling on lawsuits seeking to overturn the election. Justice Thomas was the sole vote against releasing Trump’s White House documents to the House Jan. 6 Committee investigation. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’
KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: What It Took To Win; Maybe it Still Does (00:58:59)
America today is not the America of the past. But in his new book What it Took to Win, author and history professor Michael Kazin, there is a thread that still works. Among the varied demographics, people want the government to work for them. Today’s right plays on a sense that it works for those people, not us. This fear of insecurity has fed the right wing culture war. Americans are against corporate greed; but can there be social movements which make it safe for politicians to say that? Kazin says there can be and that thread is what he calls Moral Capitalism.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 3/26/22 (00:59:30)
Segment One
We begin with Kathryn Joyce, an investigative reporter at Salon, and the author of the book two books: “The Child Catchers: Rescue, Trafficking and the New Gospel of Adoption” and “Quiverfull: Inside the Christian Patriarchy Movement. Ms. Jones discusses her latest project, a three-part series about Hillsdale Christian College who has as its goal the dismantling of public education in the US. Many of its graduates are at the Heritage Foundation, and were in the Trump administration, part of its 1776 Commission with the goal of pushing charter schools, heavy on western civilization. This is a coordinated movement across the US to siphon money from public education, to dominate US education, in order to win the country back by using teaching as our weapon.
Segment Two:
Next we catch up with Henry Grabar of Slate (dot) com. The talk of the town, Gas Tax Holidays. We talk about the pitfalls of these holidays as they’re not a good or effective way to use gasoline responsibly. The top quintile of US drivers spend 3 times as much as lower income brackets. Giving them a gas tax holiday will not help. Gas tax is useful, and pays for infrastructure items, such as roads. High gas taxes will encourage sustainable alternatives. Instead, using a child credit/gas tax would be more effective.

TUC RADIO: The Role of NATO in War and Peace in Ukraine: Noam Chomsky & John Mearsheimer (00:29:00)
On January 10, 2022, the author, linguist, and historian Noam Chomsky addressed the question: Was Ukraine invited to become part of NATO – and who did the inviting and when. Chomsky speaks on the risk of Europe being subordinated to US NATO politics. After a lifetime teaching at MIT Chomsky is now Laureate Professor of Linguistics at the University of Arizona; and still active as philosopher, historian, and author. On March 3, 2022, John Mearsheimer spoke on the topic of Putin’s Invasion of Ukraine. NATO membership VS neutrality has become the most contested factor in the attempts to bring peace to Ukraine. However, the history of the founding and subsequent expansion of NATO is redacted or unknown.

JUST SOLUTIONS: Abortion Rights Under Attack (00:29:00)
Access to abortion is declining in an increasing number of states. The Texas Supreme Court has now effectively shut down a federal challenge to the states ban on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. It’s the most restrictive abortion law in the country and other states are following suit. Florida’s legislature passed a bill that would ban abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy, and in Kentucky, the state House has voted to pass new restrictions that could effectively shut down clinics in the state. Our guest today is Amanda Allen, Senior Counsel and Director with the Lawyering Project, one of the organizations that have been challenging the Texas abortion ban in the courts.
COUNTERSPIN: White Supremacy vs. Democracy (00:28:00)
What do we want? Multiracial democracy. When do we want it? Now. What stands in the way? White supremacy that has disregarded, derailed and violently defied that democracy at multiple turns. Those anguished over the Rittenhouse acquittal, depressed by racist police brutality, unnerved by the failure to take seriously the January 6 insurrection, and worried about systemic predations on voting rights are sometimes led to say: “This isn’t America!” If you attend to actual US history (importantly different from what you might’ve read in your history textbook, or what you might someday be allowed to read in your history textbook), you will understand that this is America. But that still doesn’t mean it has to be. This can be a turning point, if more of us understand that history isn’t something that happens to us, but something we DO.
THOM HARTMANN Best of 1 Hour: Why Don’t Progressives Get That Seizing the Democratic Party is Our Best Chance to Power? (00:58:00)

SEA CHANGE RADIO: A Basket Case Study of Oil (00:29:00)
America loves to blame the President when gas prices but the fact is the U.S. President has very little control over the price we pay at the pump. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to oil expert Daniel Dicker to discuss the politicization of gas prices, how Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is rattling global prices and, in a very useful lesson on the complex world of commodities, we learn how oil markets are not that dissimilar from buying hand-woven baskets in a Turkish bazaar.

Former Donald Trump adviser Steve Bannon is still saying that states can and may soon “decertify” their 2020 election results, despite this not being a real mechanism available to states. A combination of recent studies confirm that, on average, Donald Trump’s supporters are not very smart, and we discuss the implications. Lead singer of the band “Staind,” Aaron Lewis, devolves into an unhinged conspiratorial rant during a recent performance. Voicemail caller crushes David, then realizes the message was meant for someone else and called back to apologize.

This is Part Two of two parts. Selected Works:
pleurodesis’s Interposed Voices. This is a piece entitled interposed voices. it was written by pleurodesis in 2022 in Athens NY. the piece consists of shortwave radio transmission noises sliced up, filtered, and reassembled.
Edward Ruchalski’s radio invention (for sw/ld) After collecting sounds from various short wave stations, I created radio invention (swld), specifically for this short wave/long distance program and am grateful it was chosen to be included in this broadcast. Gryphon Rue’s Cosmos, a Modular Circus on Strange Attractor. This experimental essay derives from Strange Attractor (pub. Inventory Press & Ballroom Marfa), a book exploring the uncertainties and poetics of environmental events, technology, and sound. I constructed a text by mapping and sequencing lines from poems and conversations. My words mix with the words of others: (sequentially) Bertolt Brecht, C.J. Koch, Beatrice Gibson, Juan Pablo Pardo-Guerra, and Douglas Ross. The sound component is a mix of my recordings with appearances by Zoviet France, Jana Winderen, Carlos Pern, Joakim, and impLOG. The title pays tribute to John Cages ___, __ _____ circus on _________, premiered in 1979 as Roaratorio, an Irish Circus on Finnegans Wake; a means for translating a book into a performance without actors, a performance which is both literary and musical or one or the other. (John Cage Trust) Ricardo Paraso Silvestre’s Stride. Listening to short-wave radio is like traveling a long path. There are times where the path is sinuous and loud other times silent and flat. You have to be patient. There are times when you hear people other times all you hear are atmospheric sounds and you are all alone. No human presence. The same path changes in accordance to atmospheric phenomena and time of day. Always something new around the corner. Learning to adapt your stride to the path.
Javier Suarez Quiros’s Dialogues. Late in the night, some weird sounds are captured on the dial. They are far different from our everyday language. Nevertheless, humans are capable of discovering in the succession of sound stimulus the game on which communication is based. The concurrence in time of these signals builds electrical harmonies launched into the radioelectric space, giving voice to machines. All the raw material used in Dialogues comes from RTTY signals recorded in the 20 meter band. Steve Smith’s Radio Fiendly
This composition is from my recording project Spasmodular Sounds from Steves Shortwave, the title of this track is Radio Fiendly. Dixie Treichel’s Another Nightlife. Sounds dancing through space and where they might take us. Another Nightlife by Dixie Treichel (Minneapolis Minnesota, USA) is an experimental sound collage created with live shortwave broadcasts, field recordings, original, and found sounds. Welcome to “The Radio Art Hour,” a show where art is not just on the radio, but is the radio. “The Radio Art Hour” draws from the Wave Farm Broadcast Radio Art Archive, an online resource that aims to identify, coalesce, and celebrate historical and contemporary international radio artworks made by artists around the world, created specifically for terrestrial AM/FM broadcast, whether it be via commercial, public, community, or independent transmission. Featured Speakers/Guests: Singer and farmer: Jayamma, from Therubeedi village near Bangalore; Vanaja Ramprasad, founder, Green Foundation; Sumathi, a longtime organic farmer who heads the Maruthi Oil Press Group in the village of Maralwadi; VijayaKumari and Sarvamangala from the Mahadeshwara Seed Producers Group.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 3/21/22 (00:54:54)
On the Show: A “themed show” on Critical Race Theory, what it is, what it’s not, and why the right-wing claims to be so against it. Despite being absolutely furious about Critical Race Theory, it appears many right-wingers have absolutely no idea what it is. In a clip emblematic of the fabricated culture wars in the US today, a man interviewed by The Good Liars says that Critical Race Theory is the most important issue in the Virginia election, but has no idea what Critical Race Theory is. Audience Question: Is critical race theory “dangerous?” Newsmax invites radical right wing radio host Michael Savage for an interview during which he claims teaching critical race theory is equivalent to the Holocaust. An absolutely terrible Critical Race Theory protest in Ashburn, Virginia goes embarrassingly wrong. Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, goes on an instantly-viral rant about studying Critical Race Theory in the military. Texas school official Gina Peddy is caught on an audio recording saying that lessons about the Holocaust should include “opposing” views. Audience Question: Why do Republicans talk about culture war issues and not actual policy?

ATITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 3/18/22 (00:00:00)
Part 1:
Joe Jowarski, candidate for TX attorney general, talks with us about the problems in Texas that he hopes to help solve. There is a culture war in Texas, and in the US. Texas is a one-party state, with mismanagement and cronyism. Mail in ballots have been discarded in the last primary election. This is particularly problematic for older voters, who tend to use mail in ballots more. The Texas National Guard mobilized by Governor Abbott has been found to be acting as private security for wealthy Texans. Rural hospitals are closing. Texas is no longer business-friendly. The bullying behavior of AG Paxton is obvious. Schools are now political battlegrounds..
Part 2:
Robert Hockett teaches legal, financial and some philosophical subjects at Cornell University in New York, where he is the Edward Cornell Professor of Law and a Professor of Public Policy. He is also Senior Counsel at Westwood Capital, a socially responsible investment bank in midtown Manhattan, and a Fellow of The Century Foundation.
Bill Curry, is a lawyer, former two time nominee for gov of CT, was Counselor to the President and served as domestic strategist in the Clinton White House from February 21, 1995 until January 20, 1997 and served as the head of Freeze Voter, a nuclear freeze group. We discuss Zelenskyy’s speech before the US Congress, which was very impressive. It is obvious that the battle in Ukraine is a battle for democracy as a whole, not just the country alone. This is a struggle against a war of naked aggression, launched by a despot. Going forward, it will be important to defend democratic values explicitly.
GROUNDSWELL: Long Time Veterans (00:57:36)

THE BRADCAST 3/17/22 (00:00:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a dark and ominous warning to Russian citizens who dare to voice criticism of his horrific, escalating invasion of Ukraine. Kremlin experts say Putin is becoming more erratic and unpredictable as his war against Ukraine bogs down and Western sanctions pummel the Russian economy. Ukraine cut off another pressure point from Russia by fully connecting to the European Union electric grid. But the European Union remains heavily dependent on Russian fossil fuel imports, which in turn fund much of Russia’s economy and its war machine. Environmental author, journalist and activist BILL MCKIBBEN, founder of Third Act.org and publisher of ‘The Crucial Years’ newsletter, has an ingenious solution that helps fight fascism and climate change, while adding jobs, beefing up U.S. manufacturing and securing Europe. McKibben discusses his proposal, which is gaining steam among Democratic policymakers, to replace tens of millions of Europe’s fossil fuel-burning furnaces and gas boilers with new, next-generation electric heat pump technology made in America. McKibben explains the win-win-win concept: how cutting Europe’s fossil fuel dependence permanently undermines Putin’s ability to use energy as a weapon, how President Biden can use executive authority and create jobs by ramping up US manufacturing and a domestic supply chain for heat pumps, help the U.S. and the E.U. meet climate targets, reduce fossil fuel pollution, and much more. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’
KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: New Cold War Same As The Old One (00:59:02)
A dangerous addiction to war is a result of what our guest retired Lt Col. William Astore calls victory disease. He actually served at the nuclear trigger under 2000 feet of granite. Reagan fired up the desire for conquest, but what the real new morning in America we need now is to be a normal country in normal times. Astore worries that our re-awakened cold war attitude is a serious threat to democracy at home. Peace is a frightening threat to the military-industrial-congressional complex. And for those who think peace is only for dreamy liberals, remember Trumps 2016 message of ending foreign entanglements resonated for a win.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 3/19/22 (00:59:30)
Segment One
We begin with Harvey Wasserman, a co-author of Killing Our Own: The Disaster of Americas Experience with Atomic Energy, the author of Solartopia and the soon-to-be released Peoples Spiral of U.S. History. He also edits nuke free. We discuss the state of the atomic power plants in Ukraine. There are 15 nuclear reactors in Ukraine, that provide 50% of the electrical power to the country. They are vulnerable, and two have already been overrun by the Russian army. Russian troops were in fact marched through the dead zone of Chernobyl, with no special shielding or care. We can consider the power plants in Ukraine as Putin bombs since they are in effect pre-deployed weapons of a mass apocalypse, nuclear threats that need no additional delivery to be destructive, and threaten all of Europe. The US has 93 nuclear power plants, all of which could be replaced by wind, solar batteries, and efficiency in a relatively short time frame, at much cheaper cost. In west Texas, where wind energy is abundantly available, it is too cheap to meter.
Segment Two:
Next we catch up with Robert Hockett and Bill Curry. Robert is the Senior Counsel at Westwood Capital, a socially responsible investment bank in midtown Manhattan, and a Fellow of The Century Foundation. Bill Curry, is a lawyer, former two time nominee for gov of CT, and former Counselor to the President Clinton. We discuss Zelensky’s speech before the US Congress, which was very impressive. It is obvious that the battle in Ukraine is a battle for democracy as a whole, not just the country alone. This is a struggle against a war of naked aggression, launched by a despot. Going forward, it will be important to defend democratic values explicitly.

JUST SOLUTIONS: Media Coverage of War (00:29:00)
How is the corporate media covering the war in Ukraine? The hypocrisy of coverage of this war compared to other wars is being laid bare. In contrast to the coverage of civilian casualties in Ukraine, there has been scant coverage of civilian death when it was the U.S. military launching the invasions. Our guest today is author and media critic Jeff Cohen, founding director of the Park Center for Independent Media at Ithaca College, founder of the media watch group FAIR. His recent article in Common Dreams examines how major American media outlets oppose military aggression… unless the United States is doing it.

On this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large Andrew Fiala will discuss power grabs, partisan stand-offs, propaganda, and riots which make for tantalizing fiction, but when that drama becomes a reality similar to the January 6 Capitol riot, Fiala suggests models from the past as the best solution.

HOW MUCH MONEY IS ENOUGH? – The Story of the Mexican Fisherman (00:05:20)
This is one of my favorite stories. It’s about an American businessman and a Mexican fisherman. A lot of people want to make more money so they can live a better life. They tell themselves: “Once I make enough money, then I’ll go live the life I want.” But that’s a mistake. Living the life they want should be accomplished now, not later. They spend the majority of their lives working, but along the way, they often forget what they’re working for. They start to prioritize work and making more money without a reason, and that’s a problem. They just want to have more and more, with no apparent end goal. The Mexican Fisherman story is here to remind you to take a step back, and think about what you’re actually working for, and what you already have. Every so often, you should reflect on and reevaluate your priorities. There is more to life than just work and money after all. So how much is enough?

WHEN THE BIOMASS HITS THE WIND TURBINE # 146: the Environmental Impact of Lawns (00:29:25)
Ah, the suburban dream. A lush, freshly cut lawn stretching as far as the eye can see. But as far as the planet is concerned, that lawn is an ecological disaster, a toxic polluting wasteland devoid of biodiversity. Join Annie and Jay Warmke of Blue Rock Station for a discussion of the resources consumed and the environmental problems unleashed when we pursue the perfect lawn. And what are some alternatives that are a bit gentler on Mother Earth?
ECONOMIC UPDATE: What Marx & Marxism Offer us Today (00:29:00)
This week’s show features a discussion of what Marx offers in the way of a basic critique of capitalism and an alternative economic system that would be better for most people, and how this differs from mainstream economics.

RADIO ART HOUR: Short Waves / Long Distance pt. 1 (00:58:00)
Wave Farm, Montez Press Radio, and The North American Shortwave Association presented Short Waves / Long Distance, an open call for works exploring the sonics of the shortwave radio spectrum (2-30 mHz), and the experience of long distance listening on March 4, 2022. This is Part One of two parts.
Selected Works:
Stephen Bradley’s freeze.THAW. In my recent sonic composition, freeze.THAW, I investigate a virtual SDR dynamic filter to detune the signals of distant webSDR shortwave signals as a form of an audio readymade, grounding the shortwave soundscape within a universe of modulating low and mid-frequencies.
Chelidon Frame’s A Circle Has No End
My sound explorations are divided between electroacoustic composition – with the use of radio noises, found sounds, and synthesizers – and data signification, where code interprets data and turns it into sound. A Circle Has No End is part of the audio project FLATLINE VOYAGES, where I explore the connections between drone music and short wave radio fragments, collected during lockdown.
Jeff Economy’s Orthicon Ghost
My piece is titled Orthicon Ghost. An orthicon tube is a bit of television imaging equipment from the 1950s, I first learned of them from a punchline on Ernie Kovacs show. I may be conflating TV and radio paradigms here, but to me it’s all one big signal ” the difference is that with radio, you make your own pictures. Broadcast signals often compete for dominance, but in the end the hand on the tuner ” the house ” always wins.
Jonny Farrow’s CircuitsWaves
CircuitsWaves is comprised of a mix of various shortwave radio recordings captured in the United Arab Emirates. In one sense the work is location specific, but it is also outward reaching, defying the curvature of the earth. The act of tuning a shortwave receiver allows one to directly connect to the global, the cosmic, the electromagnetic. As an artist working with this material I am just as much interested in what is between broadcasts as the broadcasts themselves.
Jill Freidberg’s El trabajo y la paz
This is a composition I made using recordings from Radio Sandino, the night that Somoza surrendered and left Nicaragua. I chose the Radio Sandino shortwave recording because it reminded me of the year I spent documenting a popular uprising in Oaxaca, Mexico, in 2006, when a peoples movement occupied several radio stations and used them to organize and mobilize people all over the state. We listened to the occupied radio stations day and night, and the sound would often blend with the sounds of rural and urban Oaxacarain, birds, farm animals. It’s such a strange and comforting experience to listen to something urgent and human while, at the same time, hearing the undisturbed sounds of a natural environment. I also did a lot of reading about the clandestine radio stations of Central American resistance movements in the 80s (Radio Sandino, Radio Venceremos), and learned that they often broadcast from very remote locations, literally hiding in the jungle, and the communities that tuned in to their broadcasts were also often in remote, rural locations. The composition Ive put together is what I imagine it might have sounded like that night that Somoza left Nicaragua, as people all over the country tuned in from their communities, celebrated, listened to the rain, and wondered what would come next. This composition includes recordings I made of accordion and water harp using a LOM Geofon seismic microphone.
Glass Salt’s Shooting Star
Glass Salt is an experimental music and sound duo consisting of singer, producer and improviser Caylie Staples and artist, engineer, and musician Johann Diedrick. Shooting Star is an excerpt from their piece Cove, an hour long radiophonic piece created in December 2021 during their artistic residency at Artscape Gibraltar Point, Toronto Island, Canada. In this excerpt, Glass Salt plays music on the beach and using radio transmitters to broadcast the sounds of the Harvester, a custom hand-held sampler and synthesizer, as well as interacting with the different snippets from radio stations captured on this beach at the tip of the island just south of Toronto. These radio transmissions are accompanied by the sounds of the immediate environment- quiet singing, waves from Lake Ontario, and planes flying overhead. The piece uses radio waves to both receive and interact with transmissions coming from a long distance, as well as to make the sounds they create in their immediate environment audible – short waves revealing what is present both near and far.
Magz Hall’s Waves of Resistance Tonnta Friotaochta Radio Art without Boundaries
Waves of Resistance (Radio Art without Boundaries) is in Galiac and English, and was recorded in Canterbury UK and on the Celtic explorer marine ship out on the Atlantic Ocean off the Irish coast. It features the voices of Mairead Ni Chroninin and Alexandra Jueno and was originally commissioned by Louise Manifold for Galway 2020 as a micro broadcast across the Aran island of Innis Orr. Waves of Resistance considers how radio helps us with forced isolation and how visible and invisible boundaries can be broken via radio waves as an act of resistance. And was inspired by the kitchen table broadcasts of Galway womens pirate radio activist Margareta D’Arcy.
Gregory Kramer’s Remote Regions
Remote Regions was composed by Gregory Kramer (Philadelphia, PA) using shortwave radio recordings, and two synthesizers, including a homemade, drone remote control-housed synth which receives infrared remote control signals. The remote control synth was also built by Gregory.
Ian Moorhead’s Shortwave (Part 2)
Shortwave is a new work inspired by coded and clandestine radio broadcasts in Australia, including: Cherry Ripe – a number station that transmitted from the Northern Territory until 2009; Radio Maubere – a Timorese radio station that communicated with activists in Darwin following the invasion of East Timor; and JN-25 ” coded Japanese messages intercepted by radio units across northern Australia during WW2.
LITERATURE ALOUD: The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. DuBois ch. 13 (00:37:53)

UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS (00:16:03)
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 (General Assembly resolution 217 A) as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations. It sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected and it has been translated into over 500 languages.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 3/14/22 (00:58:4)
On the Show: The usual suspects, including Jordan Peters, Pierre Kory and John Campbell are pushing another COVID Ivermectin “study,” but even the study’s co-author says it is being misused and misinterpreted. American journalist Brent Renaud has been killed by Russian forces while covering the invasion of Ukraine. A leaked memo from the Russian Kremlin tells Russian state media to regularly feature the commentaries of American Fox News propagandist Tucker Carlson. Fox News propagandist Tucker Carlson is desperate to defend Russian President Vladimir Putin, most recently pushing a conspiracy theory about so-called bioweapons labs in Ukraine. A visibly swollen and disheveled Donald Trump delivers an unhinged rally speech in Florence, South Carolina to a crowd of sycophants. Donald Trump’s rally in Florence, South Carolina is riddled with outrageous crowdgoers, headlined by MyPillow CEO and Founder Mike Lindell. Former Democratic Congresswoman and CPAC speaker Tulsi Gabbard starts openly spreading Russian propaganda about Ukrainian biolabs. Tucker Carlson invites right-wing UFC fighter Bryce Mitchell, who recently delivered a fact-free screed about Ukraine, onto his show. Trumpist voicemail caller is furious with David’s coverage of the recent Donald Trump rally in Florence, South Carolina.

THE BRADCAST 3/11/22: Shortwaves for Freedom’ to counter Russian propaganda (00:57:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: Russia has adopted a new censorship law in the wake of its unjustified invasion of Ukraine, and has now criminalized protests and all news reporting that does not reflect Kremlin-approved propaganda. Western media outlets are withdrawing their reporters from the country, and the Kremlin has blocked internet access to websites of foreign state-run media outlets like Voice of America, Radio Free Europe, the BBC and Deutsche Welle. But for most Russians, there is very little access to independent, outside reporting to counter the official state media narrative falsely telling them that Russia’s barbaric military assault on its sovereign neighbor’s civilian population is a minor, ‘special military operation.’ But a new grassroots effort is underway to pierce through the media blackout of Putin’s new Iron Curtain by utilizing shortwave radio, which served as a lifeline to many in the former Soviet Union during the Cold War. Attorney KATE NEISWENDER and longtime Voice of America employee and shortwave enthusiast KIM ANDREW ELLIOTT explain their grassroots campaign, dubbed #ShortwavesForFreedom on social media, which is trying to fill the gap by broadcasting into Eastern Europe and Russia via shortwave transmission, beginning from WRMI Radio Miami International in Florida. They are crowdsourcing the effort to expand to other stations with a fund raiser at Fundrazr.com/RadioWaves. Also today: Some cracks may be beginning to appear in the Kremlin-approved television news. Plus: a fascinating story about the former managing editor of Russia’s state-owned television outlet Russia Today, who resigned her post last week in protest of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
EARTH RIOT RADIO: Planet Earth Assassinates Putin! (00:29:00)
We continue to pretend that the Earth is not a conscious force; that it is not creating the events of our lives — from a baby’s first breath to the melting of the Himalayas…This is the reason that we are oblivious to the danger we are in. We can’t imagine that the Earth is alive. We experience the natural world through the prism of our toxic dust and YouTube clips of lions devouring leopards. The average city dweller with a computer experiences 10,000 ads per day. Yes, there is the occasional super storm that pokes through our bubble, but the storms and floods aren’t thought of as coming “from an Earth”. They are “natural disasters” — mysterious uprisings of the elements, with no source at all. We wander on, as the ads circle us… and the Extinction accelerates.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 3/11/22 (00:58:00)
Part 1: We talk with Scott Braddock, editor of the Quorum Report, dean of the Austin Press Corps, about events in Texas. The Texas Primary elections took place, with much confusion. New voting rules and restrictions disqualified many voters from participating, likely with the most impact on rural, older voters who would prefer to vote by mail. New rules also require voters to supply more personal information, which makes them uncomfortable.
Gas prices are high and rising. The Democrats blame Putin’s war, though there are many reasons. The pain will be greater for those who can afford it the least. But high oil prices hurt many other industries. For Texas, optimum oil prices are likely in the $60-80/barrel. Currently prices are at around $100/barrel.
Part 2: We talk with Lincoln Mitchell and Bill Curry about public opinion about the war in Ukraine. Almost universal condemnation of Putin. This may lead to a realignment of the world powers. Post war, Russia is likely to emerge as a China client. However, China is experiencing a rise in Covid cases, which will affect their economy, and the world. The US must be able to cope with the inflation caused by these factors, and blunt the force for its population. Some suggestions include a wealth tax, to finance child tax credits and energy credits paid to the populace, eliminate price gouging, and cutting student debt. All of these would help American working people. In addition, concentrating on sustainable energy developments would reduce dependence on oil and the oil thugs around the world.
SOJOURNER TRUTH: The interconnection between unwaged worker rights & protecting our environment (00:58:17)
Today on Sojourner Truth we focus on the inter-relationship between caregiving and environmental protection. Family, unwaged caregivers-most of whom are women, including mothers and grandmothers- and the most impoverished women on welfare provide care for relatives, children, the elderly and persons with disabilities. Caregivers are expected to pick up the slack without any acknowledgement of the value or resources for their work. The International Labor Office has estimated that women do two-thirds of the world’s work for five percent of the income. And according to a report released by Oxfam in January 2020, women around the world perform 12.5 billion hours of unpaid labor every day. Overall, the work of unwaged caregivers has been estimated to contribute at least $11 trillion to the global economy, according to a Human Development Report. Meanwhile, Indigenous peoples who are protecting the forests and natural farmers around the world are showing the way amid the ongoing climate crisis. Many of them are unwaged caregivers, who are providing both for people and the environment. They point out that in order to address the main cause of the climate crisis, we must transform our relationship with the natural world, beginning with agriculture. The interaction of soil, water and sun generates the water cycle on which the climate and all life depend. This forms part of the broader soil regeneration movement, which can help to reverse climate change by rebuilding soil organic matter and restoring degraded soil biodiversity ” resulting in both carbon drawdown and improving the water cycle. Imagine a world where unwaged caregivers would be compensated for regenerating our soul and protecting our planet, instead of money going to governments and corporations. During today’s show, we bring you audio from a recent webinar hosted by the Global Women’s Strike, titled Care Income for People and Planet: Why Our Future Lies in the Soil. We hear from speakers around the world, helping us better understand the interconnections between the movement for the rights of unwaged caregivers, and the need to protect our environment through progressive new methods, such as soil regeneration.

THE BRADCAST 3/10/22: Accountability for 2020 ‘Election Fraud’ Fraudsters and Dupes (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: The latest news in Russia’s unjustified, barbaric invasion of Ukraine is grim, and US officials warn it is likely to get much, much worse in the days ahead. US Attorney General Merrick Garland says his Justice Department will ‘not shy away from cases that are controversial or sensitive or political’ in response to questions about whether top-level plotters in the January 6 Capital Insurrection like Donald Trump will ever face accountability. Tina Peters, a Colorado elections official who promoted Trump’s lies about the 2020 election, has been indicted on 10 criminal counts related to elections tampering. A New York judge has rejected an attempt by Fox ‘News’ and a number of their top anchors to dismiss a $2.7 billion defamation lawsuit, filed by voting system company Smartmatic, over the cable network’s repeated broadcasting of patently absurd allegations about the 2020 election, citing ‘reckless disregard for the truth’. New data shows that in the Texas primary last week, an extraordinary 27,000 mail ballots were rejected, from both Democrats and Republican voters, under the state’s new voter suppression law. The law was passed by the Republican-controlled state legislature to erect new barriers to voting in response to fake concern over Trump’s false claims about a stolen 2020 election. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’
KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: Ukraine: A Genuine Conservative Take (00:59:22)
Both establishment parties are competing to look toughest on the Ukraine crisis. But the fact is Americas founders were solidly non-interventionist. Our constant search for new monsters to destroy; where has that gotten us? More peace and justice? Our republic and democracy better preserved? On this show Jacob Hornberger, president of the Future of Freedom Foundation argues that as the power of the national security state grows, Americans lose more of our rights and liberties. And we are demonstrably less secure. This moment is, he argues, a time for introspection.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy was a significant leader of the “Lost Cause,” an intellectual movement that revised history to look more favorably on the South after the American Civil War. They were women from elite antebellum families that used their social and political clout to fundraise and pressure local governments to erect monuments that memorialized Confederate heroes. They also formed textbook review committees that monitored what Southern schoolchildren learned about the war. Their influential work with children created a lasting memory of the Confederate cause, and those generations grew up to be the segregationists of the Jim Crow Era in the South.

Long Now has been informally tracking these organizations for years, and in 02019 formed The Organizational Continuity Project to study long-lived institutions more formally. The series was started in 02003 to build a compelling body of ideas about long-term thinking from some of the world’s leading thinkers. The Seminars take place in San Francisco and are curated and hosted by Stewart Brand.
ALAN WATTS: Conquering Fear (00:14:32)
Conquering Fear by Alan Watts. Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was a British writer and lecturer who interpreted and popularized Eastern philosophy and religion for a Western audience. Watts wrote more than 25 books and articles on subjects important to Eastern and Western religion, introducing the then-burgeoning youth culture to The Way of Zen (1957), one of the first bestselling books on Buddhism. In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), Watts proposed that Buddhism could be thought of as a form of psychotherapy and not a religion. He considered Nature, Man, and Woman (1958) to be, “from a literary point of view—the best book I have ever written.” He also explored human consciousness and psychedelics in the essay “The New Alchemy” (1958) and in the book The Joyous Cosmology (1962).

Guest, Dr. Lisa Miller, Ph.D., author of, “The Awakened Brain: The New Science of Spirituality and Our Quest For An Inspired Life,” returns this week to explain how depression can be the key to a spiritual awakening. Dr. Miller says that the hallmark experience of depression is marked by a loss of connection to self and others but it is also a sense of not being held by a force or presence greater than yourself. Depression can be treated as something we wrestle with, or it can be viewed as an invitation to a reigniting of our “awakened brain,” by connecting with ourselves and those around us. Join Kevin, Niseema, and Dr. Miller as she leads us through two visualization exercises that help us experience our “awakened brain,” providing an opportunity for spiritual growth.

THE BRADCAST 3/4/22: Quincy Institute’s Anatol Lieven, on paths to peace in Ukraine (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: Dramatically good jobs numbers show that some 678,000 new jobs were created in February, with new revisions to monthly data from December and January adding an additional 100,000 to the already record-breaking job creation numbers. Unemployment last month hit just 3.8 percent, falling below the pre-pandemic rate, at 3.8 percent, with a record 6.6 million jobs created over the past year. Experts say the strong economy is due in large part to President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, passed by Democrats without any Republican support. Yet new polls show the American public is completely clueless about the booming economy because the corporate media is failing to inform the electorate about basic economic facts. Russia’s horrific, unprovoked war on Ukraine now includes a Russian military attack on the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, a dangerous escalation. ANATOL LIEVEN, Senior Research Fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, explains his latest article, ‘How to get to a place of peace for Ukraine.’ Lieven, an expert on Ukraine and Russia, offers deep insights into the history of the region and other Eastern European conflicts, potential outcomes from Russia’s war on Ukraine, and a roadmap to peace – – including difficult choices that may come with it.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 3/4/22 (00:58:00)
Part 1: We check in with Scott Braddock, editor of the Quorum Report, about the results of the recent Texas primary. Republicans have stuck with Abbott for Governor, no surprise. Paxton will be in a runoff with two other candidates. Paxton already attacking the other candidates as too liberal. The turnout was a bit higher than expected. There was a lot of confusion for voters, because of recent changes in voting laws, particularly around mail-in voting. Among the Democrats, more progressive candidate won their primaries.
Part 2: We talk with Stephen Greene, professor of Political Science, about the amount of hidden money held by the very rich. This is difficult to pin down, because both parties in the US are beholden to the very rich for political contributions. We also discuss some of the topics of the State of the Union speech, such as police reform. This will be a big problem, unless the police unions can be reformed. Biden did not raise issues of importance to Black citizens, which we consider to be a mistake. We anticipate some inflation and price gouging due to the war, and also just plain greed.
GROUNDSWELL: Defenders Radio Hour Charles Brown (00:57:37)
This special episode features the work of the Virginia Defenders for Freedom, Justice and Equality in a Defenders Radio Hour. Hint: It changes the dynamic a lot.

THE BRADCAST 3/3/22: Legal journalist Mark Joseph Stern on US Supreme Court developments (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: Some good-ish news in Russia’s war on Ukraine, as a second round of peace talks resulted in a ‘possible, temporary’ ceasefire to establish safe corridors to allow humanitarian aid and evacuations of civilians in some areas of Ukraine. The U.N. says 1 million refugees have fled Ukraine in one week, a record, and warns that millions more could flee the unspeakable violence in coming weeks. The International Criminal Court has reportedly opened an investigation into Russian war crimes and atrocities. Russian troops have taken control of the major Ukrainian city Kherson. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pleaded for more international assistance to his country. In the U.S. House, three far-right Republicans voted against a non-binding resolution supporting the people of Ukraine and its sovereign territory and condemning Russia’s aggression. Slate’s legal journalist MARK JOSEPH STERN reports on a number of new developments at the U.S. Supreme Court, with incisive analysis on President Biden’s new nominee, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson; the disturbing role of dark money that is now affecting judicial appointments and has poisoned the U.S. judicial system; the rightwing court majority’s push to create a free-speech exemption to anti-discrimination laws; a bonkers ruling giving a single, unelected, Trump-appointed federal judge control over the Navy’s special operations forces, and a stunning challenge brought by GOP-controlled states to strip the EPA of authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, that Stern warns could ultimately undermine the long-established regulatory authority of all federal agencies. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’
KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: How the Kennedys Got to Be Dynasty (00:57:58)
As with many success stories, an impoverished, unknown yet powerful woman made it happen. In his new book, The First Kennedys, The Humble Roots of an American Dynasty author Neal Thompson tells us about the Ireland they fled and the matriarch Bridget Murphy, and her dockworker son who became a political organizer in Boston, among others. The anti-immigrant fervor of their time served as a playbook for today’s nativist hatred of non-Protestant arrivals. There are good reasons Americans are still fascinated and connected with this family.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 3/5/22 (005930)
Segment One: We begin with Maurice Cunningham, JD, PhD, a retired associate professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts Boston and the author of “Dark Money and the Politics of School Privatization.” about the recent assault on public education. We discuss various sham grass roots groups, well funded by the Koch organization, and others, and how they are subverting public schools and teachers. Teachers’ unions find it very hard to counter them because of the money being spent, all with one goal: to pull budgets away from public education.
Segment Two: We then welcome Chuck Collins, who is the Director of the Program on Inequality and the Common Good at the Institute for Policy Studies, where he co-edits Inequality.org. Our chat is about the push to impose economic sanctions on Putin and the oligarchs who support him. However, the government has to first find their assets. It is estimated that 85% of their assets are offshore, not in Russia, but in locations in other countries, such as the US, England, and others. In the US, several states, including Delaware, South Dakota, and New Hampshire are repositories of ‘wealth storage units’ such as luxury residential properties, anonymous trusts, etc. There are 750 billionaires in the US, whose wealth has increased by $2 Trillion in the last 2-3 years, by profiteering and price gouging. Fifty of those billionaires have paid no estate taxes. It is important that we have the political will to stop these practices, and reform our systems.

CREATING A PREFERRED FUTURE: 2045 A Paradigm Shift Odyssey (00:58:00)
The story is basically a recipe for Paradigm Shift, thinly disguised as a short fiction story.
2045 is based on current trends; extrapolations, real life experience, projects and places; plus imagination.
The story describes a different world in 2045. Gains have been made towards a preferred future, with a big help from a set of obscure articles published in a small circulation eco magazine in 2019. [this is real]
The author of the articles was invited to present at the celebrated Futures Conference where he laid out an outline for paradigm shift. The outline was surprisingly simple. A critical part was for progressive organizations of all kinds to recognize they were all on the same team, each with their own niche, dealing with some kind of damage caused by capitalism and the consumer Culture. Those organizations began to educate their memberships about how to prioritize and manage their own time and money to help bring about a preferred future. The presentation resonated among a wide range of demographics. In the early 2030’s, the timing was right. Social, economic, political and economic conditions are very different. The articles’ content found a much more receptive audience than ten years earlier. Real social and economic progress was in the early going. Was this the beginning of the mythical paradigm shift? But there remain challenges. Some interests in 2045 would like nothing more than to return to glory days of their own power and privilege, when capitalism ruled the world. They were particularly worried about an initiative in the newly elected Oregon State Legislature that was calling for a phasing in of full cost accounting. They were even more worried about the prospects of the Movement as they were reported to be laying the groundwork for a national Truth, Reconciliation and Accountability process – a sort of capitalism on trial.

THE POSITIVE MIND: The Awakened Brain with Dr. Lisa Miller PhD Pt 1 (00:58:00)
Following up on the last week’s show on Hygge, the Danish art of feeling good, Hosts welcome Dr. Lisa Miller to talk about how the brain responds to Hygge and other pleasurable experiences. In her book “The Awakened Brain: The New Science of Spirituality and Our Quest For An Inspired Life,” Dr. Miller shows us that when a person talks about a spiritual experience or a feeling of connection, fMRI scans show an increase in blood flow and the brain takes on a reddish color. Conversely, when participants were asked to tell a sad or depressing story, blood flow in the brain was constricted. Dr. Miller explains that the reddish brain reflects a kind of awareness called “Awakened Awareness,” and that the brain is capable of shifting states and feelings based on what you are thinking and experiencing.

TUC RADIO: Alex Carey – Corporations and Propaganda, parts 2 (00:29:00)
Alex Carey wrote that the people of the US have been subjected to an unparalleled, expensive, 3/4 century long propaganda effort designed to expand corporate rights by undermining democracy and destroying the unions. The 20th century, he wrote, is marked by three historic developments: the growth of democracy via the expansion of the franchise, the growth of corporations, and the growth of propaganda to protect corporations from democracy. Careys unique view of US history goes back to World War I and ends with the Reagan era. Noam Chomsky dedicated his book Manufacturing Consent to the memory of Alex Carey. Chomsky says that the Australian sociologist would have written the definitive history of propaganda in the US, had he lived to complete his work. This is a fairly complex production with many voices, historic sound clips, and source material. The program has been used by writers and students of history and propaganda. Alex Carey: Taking the Risk out of Democracy, Corporate Propaganda VS Freedom and Liberty with a foreword by Noam Chomsky was published by the University of Illinois Press in 1995.
DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 3/1/22 (00:56:56)

Speculation grows that Vladimir Putin’s strange behavior could be a result of being terminally ill, although it remains mere speculation at this time. Right-wing reactionaries love to use imaginary slippery slopes as rhetorical tools, and it’s important not to fall for them. Donald Trump attempts to take credit for NATO, which he previously wanted to withdraw from. Donald Trump is furious that Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis continues to climb in 2024 Presidential polls, hitting 28% in the recent CPAC straw poll. David delivers the State of the David Pakman Show 2022 address, hours ahead of Joe Biden’s 2022 State of the Union address.
