DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 6/29/22 (00:55:18)

On the Show: Cassidy Hutchinson, former aide to Trump Chief-of-Staff Mark Meadows, delivers explosive testimony to the January 6 Committee, including that Donald Trump assaulted a Secret Service agent, tried to commandeer a vehicle, and threw food at a wall, leaving a ketchup stain. Cassidy Hutchinson testifies to the January 6 Committee that former Trump Chief-of-Staff Mark Meadows confirmed that Donald Trump indeed believe. Donald Trump has a childish and humiliating meltdown on Truth Social over the testimony by Cassidy Hutchinson given to the January 6 Committee. Fox News is in shambles after the devastating testimony of Cassidy Hutchinson to the January 6 Committee, oscillating between stunned silences and confused statements. Right wing media instantly launches a smear campaign against Cassidy Hutchinson after her testimony to the January 6 Committee. The January 6 Committee presents evidence that Trumpists are attempting to intimidate Committee witnesses, which could meet the standard for the federal crime of witness tampering. In a stunning reversal, Democrats are suddenly winning every major recent 2022 generic ballot poll. There are growing discussions of Hillary Clinton for 2024. Voicemail caller is furiously signing up for memberships merely to furiously cancel them.

Listening to Ecstasy: The Transformative Power of MDMA is now on audiobooks. The FDA is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials that are expected to clear the way for legal use by 2023. In his third appearance on the show, Charley reads pivotal passages that describe the physical and emotional responses that MDMA creates, as well as its bonding effects in both his relationship with his spouse and some courageous couples who are exploring MDMA as an option. We invite you to listen as Kevin, Niseema, and Charley discuss why he calls MDMA “The Chemical of Connection.”

RADIO ART HOUR: Jesse Kudler, Graham Stephenson; Derek Bailey (00:58:00)

Tune in today for radio art works released in 2022 from Jesse Kudler and Graham Stephenson and also English avant-garde guitarist Derek Bailey. First, Stephenson plays amplified trumpet, and Kudler performs on guitar, radios, transmitters, tapes, and electronics on the “Apposite Rejoinder” album, and we tune in to the “Liquid Assets” track here. Then we hear from Bailey, who died in 2005, but in the 1990s enjoyed playing along with jungle pirate radio stations. On the album’s liner notes, Bailey says, “So I’ve been listening to it, and I really like the way they do it on the radio – I have to say that in recent times it seems to have got softer, a lot less abrasive in some ways. There are more vocal samples, for example… But what I like about the radio is the live quality – although the stuff is records, they don’t leave them alone – they’ll talk over them, advertise gigs, order a pizza – the music’s constant but with interruptions. It’s very live – and with that sustained pace, which of course is inhuman… And it’s nice to play along with, particularly as opposed to free jazz situations where the pace is often very slow. I’ve found it fantastic to practice with. So for a long time I’ve been doing that… I’ve always liked the parts where the music stops and drifts along – you get some ridiculous string orchestra, then it just slips a bit, the pitch goes or they slow it down or something. Then the drums come back – it’s completely meaningless! I like that… What is a pain and can sometimes dilute it is the repetitive – looped or sampled – vocals… The funny thing is, I’ve never heard a jungle record, all I’ve heard has been off the radio….”

THE BRADCAST 6/24/22: Supreme Corruption: Radical, activist GOP cancel reproductive freedoms, privacy rights, gun safety (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: It’s a dark, historic day in America. Unelected, radical, extremist, activist justices packed onto a stolen U.S. Supreme Court majority unleashed the corrupt decisions for which their lifetime seats on the High Court were purchased. This week, the rightwing Republican supermajority ignored the ‘well-regulated’ text in the Constitution to cancel states’ rights to regulate firearms, overturning New York’s century-old law limiting concealed weapons in public. Then the rightwing Court canceled a half-century of constitutional rights to personal privacy and reproductive freedom, granting states and the federal government rights to force women into pregnancy and childbirth against their will, even in cases of rape and incest. In both majority opinions, rightwing Justices Alito and Thomas fabricated the justification that any rights not in existence at the nation’s founding lack the ‘historical tradition’ to be constitutional rights. In a disturbing concurrence overturning Roe v. Wade, Thomas called for repealing rights to contraceptives, same-sex intimacy and marriage (although not inter-racial marriage, for reasons that the inter-racially married Thomas failed to explain). The rightwing corrupt Court will only get more radical and brazen until it is UN-packed and expanded to reflect the actual will of the American people, who overwhelmingly support reproductive rights and gun safety laws. President Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi discussed actions to continue the fight to restore and defend constitutional rights and freedoms, and called on all Americans to vote in November. Also today: Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 6/24/22 (00:58:00)

Part 1: We talk with Scott Braddock, editor of the Quorum Report, and the dean of the Austin, Tx. Press corps.

Dark money groups spent millions of dollars to influence the Texas Republican primary vote, which is the important vote. The governor, Abbott, and the senior Senator, Cornyn, were not at the Texas Republican convention, which was dominated by the more radical wing. We talk about Uvalde, and how the Republicans back the blue when convenient, but are planning to have a show trial of the Uvalde police in this matter.

Part 2: We talk with Robert Hennelly, and Bill Curry. We discuss several topics: the gas tax reduction (tax holiday) will likely have almost no effect. Instead, a windfall profits tax would likely have made more difference. The oil companies’ profits are huge. Raising the minimum wage and subsidizing families with children would also help.

Everything big needs fixing: there is a growing underclass in America, infrastructure is in dire need, etc.

THE BRADCAST 6/23/22: Special coverage of House J6 Hearing, Day 5  (00:57:30)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: In today’s hearing of the bipartisan U.S. House Select Committee investigating the January 6 insurrection, Chair Bennie Thompson explicitly stated, for the first time, that Donald Trump tried to steal the 2020 election. Day 5 of the gripping hearings detailed another pillar of Trump’s unrelenting, multi-pronged scheme to steal the 2020 Presidential election from the American people: his failed attempt to decapitate Justice Department leadership and install a low-level apparatchik named Jeffrey Clark to do Trump’s bidding. Their plot nearly succeeded in overthrowing the US government. In live testimony, three former DOJ officials detailed how the Justice Department investigated every absurd, easily-debunked conspiracy theory that Trump and Republicans dredged up from the internet; how they repeatedly informed Trump that Clark’s corrupt plan to weaponize the DOJ to publicly lie about the election was illegal; how only the threat of mass resignations thwarted Trump’s plot, narrowly averting an unprecedented constitutional crisis, and more. Award-winning opinion columnist HEATHER DIGBY PARTON of Salon and Hullabaloo, and LISA GRAVES, former U.S. Deputy Asst. Attorney General and Deputy Chief for the US Court system, now current Executive Director of True North Research, offer deep analysis and insight into the day’s proceedings. The House J6 Committee also revealed that at least six Republican members of Congress sought pardons from Trump, apparently recognizing their criminal culpability in the plot. Also today: the rogue, corrupt, stolen and packed rightwing US Supreme Court majority undermined states’ rights to regulate firearms in public, and undercut Miranda rights for those detained by law enforcement.

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE (01:00:01)

Though the angry white supremacist right grabs today’s news, the truth is the Christian Left has much deeper roots in American history. According to the Reverend Quadricos Bernard Driskell, the religious left has always been part of the fabric of America. Jesus was about justice, compassion, and empathy. Driskell argues now We need a bombastic counter-narrative, a politically engaged movement harkening back to the glory days of social gospel. As the intolerant right chases away believers, more young people are choosing the religious left: reasons for optimism.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN (00:59:30)

Segment One: We begin with Arthur Rizer, who is the Vice President of Technology, Criminal Justice and Civil Liberties at the Lincoln Network, and an adjunct professor at George Mason University Antonin Scalia School of Law. We discuss how militarization has happened in the police. Police have been given military equipment, weapons, and, most of all, a military mindset. This mindset is one that is contradictory: police are supposed to be peace officers, and protect the citizens (civil rights bearers) while military are trained to overwhelm the enemy, by disabling them by sometimes lethal force. That makes police who adopt this mindset view all as potential combatants/enemies. Police thus see themselves as always in danger. This leads to over-policing and under-protection.

Segment Two: We then catch up with Robert Hennelly, and Bill Curry. We discuss several topics: the gas tax reduction (tax holidays) will likely have almost no effect. Instead, a windfall profits tax would likely have made more difference. The oil companies’ profits are huge. Raising the minimum wage and subsidizing families with children would also help. Everything big needs fixing: there is a growing underclass in America, infrastructure is in dire need, etc.

THOM HARTMANN Best of 1 Hour: How Ron Johnson Almost Got Away with Treason (00:58:00)

How did a corrupt senator even find himself in a position where he could’ve handed two pieces of paper to the VP that would have changed the outcome of our presidential election? The Electoral College. How The GOP Plans to Impeach Biden. Anti-Abortionists have a very bad plan for women.

LOPATE AT LARGE: Bob Hennelly on Stuck Nation (00:51:30)

Robert “Bob” Hennelly is an award-winning, print and broadcast journalist. For more than 30 years, he has reported on a broad spectrum of major public policy questions, ranging from homeland security to the economy, environmental contamination to corruption, and occupational safety to homelessness. Bob has a passion for bringing real news to his audience in a balanced and detailed way. He believes in “old-fashioned” journalism–investigating for himself the facts of a situation, and not assuming that press releases and news service wire-copy provide the whole story.

LITERATURE ALOUD: “The Yellow Wallpaper” (1899) by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (00:32:08)

Originally considered a gothic horror story, Gilman’s proto-feminist story is rich with suggestive detail and disturbing details. Inspired by her own treatment with “the rest cure” by Dr. Weir, Gilman gives us a chilling sense of what it feels like to be so dismissed and micromanaged by authority to the extent that we begin see strange things.

TUC RADIO: Michael Parenti on Theocracy and Democracy, Political Uses of Religion (00:29:03)

Michael Parenti says that democracy can’t survive under religious rule “whatever that religion may be.”

Parenti’s warning in this archival recording is as timely and urgently expressed as it was when this speech was first given on April 12, 1987, during the 2nd term of the Reagan administration. This talk is also very funny. With roots in a working class Italian district of New York City and a Ph.D. in political science from Yale, Michael Parenti has become an internationally known writer and lecturer and author of 23 books.

Documentary footage proves Ivanka Trump lied about whether she supported the coup attempt. The January 6th committee adjusts its hearing scheduling citing coming across new evidence. Republican senators pretend as though the January 6th hearings are super boring. Ron DeSantis is ahead of Trump in a New Hampshire primary poll, 39% to 37%. Marjorie Taylor Greene goes on a strange rant on the House floor. Lauren Boebert requests $33 million from Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg after repeatedly insulting him. LITERATURE ALOUD: Looking Backward 2000-1887 by Edward Bellamy ch. 27 (00:21:16)
Published in 1888, this short novel focuses on the education of a wealthy man from 1887 who, amidst the labor struggles and wealth inequalities of The Gilded Age, experiences a “Mesmeric sleep” until the year 2000 when he is awakened to see an America transformed by the gradual, non-violent evolution from primitive capitalist exploitation to an advanced cooperative socialism. The novel predicts the radio, the credit card and big box stores as the characters discuss the problems and illogic of dog-eat-dog capitalism and the superior culture of a society focused on the benefit of all rather than the enrichment of a few.

TED-X: A Southern Historian’s Lost Cause – Roy Wisecarver (00:09:18)

Growing up in the Deep South, Roy “Trae” Wisecarver was taught a different story about the Civil War than he learned as a historian. In this compelling talk, he mixes history and common sense to make the case that he and his fellow Southerners can love their home without lying about its history. Roy Wisecarver graduated from UAM with a BA in History in 2013. He subsequently earned an MA from the University of Mississippi and is currently a PhD student at Texas A&M University. His dissertation examines the relationships between the Confederate government, state government, and people of Arkansas during the Civil War. He will be talking about the dissonance between Civil War memory and history. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. The Uvalde Police Department is working with a private law firm to block details from coming out about the recent school shooting. Donald Trump says on Wayne Allyn Root’s radio show he won’t necessarily be supporting Kevin McCarthy for House Speaker. Krystal Ball schools Bill Maher on the topics of inflation and whether Joe Biden is losing popularity because he’s gone too far left. A number of Supreme Court decisions are expected to be announced in the coming days. Louisiana passes an abortion ban that will be triggered into law if the Supreme Court overturns Roe vs. Wade. Joe Biden weighs instituting a gas tax holiday to ease ballooning gasoline prices. A gas station manager is fired after a typo leads to him selling 69-cent gasoline. THE POSITIVE MIND: Ambivalence: It’s not what you think (00:58:00)

Are you “of two minds” or “two feelings” about any one thing? Can you see both sides of an argument and find it difficult to land on either side? Maybe you are ambivalent, and that’s not all bad. Culturally, the decisive and single minded person is held up as the one to admire in life. The availability of so much choice in today’s world leaves many of us feeling ambivalent. What if being ambivalent speaks to a deeper understanding of life and the world? When ambivalence becomes pathological you can feel paralyzed, avoiding the feelings that underlie having to make important choices in life, like choosing a love partner or career. Join Kevin O’Donoghue LMHC and Niseema Dyan Diemer LMT, SEP as they explore how feelings of ambivalence play out in the context of relationships and current events.

THE CHILDREN’S HOUR: Ants On A Log (00:58:00)

This week on The Children’s Hour we chat with Julie from Ants on a Log, a band that performs music for children and other childlike people that advocates for positivity, social justice, and silliness through song. This 2-person band consists of Julie and Anya from Philadelphia, PA. The two began writing together, finding driving harmonies and song topics that were silly, serious, environmental, feminist, gender-bending, and just plain fun. In their off-stage lives, Julie is a music therapist and Anya is an elementary science teacher. Their powers combined make for smart and socially conscious folk, a delight for children and adults of all ages. This week we discuss the importance of self-realization, and the freedom in being seen for who you are. Many of Ants on a Log songs challenge societal archetypes, such as girls have long hair and boys have short hair ” they even have a song called Some Girls Have Short Hair! We visit the topic of pronouns and how they are important and respectful of an individual. Ants even has a mix less on their website called Practice Your Pronouns. Julie also offers their experience using non-binary pronouns.

THE MIDDLE WAY SOCIETY: The Mind At Work with Mike Rose (00:41:35)

A fascinating discussion, with Mike Rose reminiscing with great warmth and appreciation of his mother’s skill and social intelligence in her work as a waitress in a series of restaurants. I’m not sure that I accept his premise that such skills are undervalued or unacknowledged, although it’s perhaps the case that they may not attract the monetary rewards they deserve, and may not be reflected in the social status attributed to service or manual workers.

It’s my experience that skilled ‘blue-collar’ artisans are generally highly regarded, so that people who cut great suits or restore ancient furniture may enjoy high status, as do actors, musicians or sportswomen whose intelligence lies elsewhere than in the intellectual domains. Skill, be it socio-emotional, embodied or physical, equates with intelligence in contemporary society. Indeed, it might be argued that intellectuals tend to get a bashing these days, and many are rather poorly rewarded for their efforts. Mike Rose is a research professor in the department of education of UCLA and the author of several books including Why School, Back to School and Possible Lives. We’re going to be talking about education and some of the themes explored in these books but we’ll be focusing in particular on his book The Mind at Work: Valuing the Intelligence of the American Worker which challenges the long-held notion that people who work with their hands make up a less intelligent class. VOX: How Southern socialites rewrote Civil War history (00:06:55)

The United Daughters of the Confederacy was a significant leader of the “Lost Cause,” an intellectual movement that revised history to look more favorably on the South after the American Civil War. They were women from elite antebellum families that used their social and political clout to fundraise and pressure local governments to erect monuments that memorialized Confederate heroes. They also formed textbook review committees that monitored what Southern schoolchildren learned about the war. Their influential work with children created a lasting memory of the Confederate cause, and those generations grew up to be the segregationists of the Jim Crow Era in the South.

RADIO ART HOUR: NRRF B Radio (01:00:31)

“The Forbidden Planet: the Refrain” from NRRF B Radio is featured this week. Live performance of a radio art/radio play with collective members performing together via online platform from WGXC studio in Acra, New York, with performers in Chicago; Palm Beach, Florida; Asheville, North Carolina; and Abu Dhabi, UAE. Broadcast live to a studio audience on-site at Radiophrenia, Centre for Contemporary Art, Glasgow Scotland May 19, 2019, and subsequently re-edited for rebroadcast. “The Forbidden Planet: The Refrain” is created and performed by Jonny Farrow, Anna Friz, Steve Germana, Jeff Kolar, and Peter Speer. It includes the occasional sounds of the Weather Warlock, a weather instrument by Quintron and permanently installed in the WGXC studio at Wave Farm in Acra, New York. This episode of NRRF B Radio finds our fearless space pirates in a real pickle. Launch countdown is forestalled by interminable delays. When the ship is finally set into motion, they encounter multi-dimensional distortions, and the Snow Pod experiences a meltdown due to a bad calculation involving a floating point decimal number. As the pirates fall back toward the surface of the Forbidden Planet, they notice what appear to be creatures resembling marshmallows. They speculate on what these strange entities might sound like and use their space radios to see if there are any readable frequencies. Will they ever succeed in launching out of the planet’s atmosphere and making their way back home? NRRF B Radio is a series of radio shows mashing b-list movie and fiction genres with radio art. Each B Radio episode features a theme to structure the improvisational nature of the shows, though tangents are frequent and encouraged. Its live radio (generally with at least one unlicensed transmission in the multi-plex mix), streamed, sometimes with special guests and live audience. The core group of performers play live instruments and electronics, sample wildly, speculate broadly, and have been known to sing. Show are long form, generally between 2-5 hours in length.

ALAN WATTS: Stop Feeling Lost by Doing This (00:15:17)

If there is one simple question that bothers us all as human beings, it is : Why are we living ? It is a burden on our shoulders, and we cannot think about it without going depressed or becoming sad, because simply we can’t answer it. We got blocked. In this lecture, Alan Watts talks about the game of life, how the answer of that question is : To play. To simply not take it seriously, to stay within the flow of life without having to be very strict and rigid about it. We have to take it as if it was a game. Because if we take it seriously, we will be forced to think scientifically, to predict the future, and be aware that any false move, would lead us to a fatal death, which is not the case.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 6/20/22 (00:52:24)

On the Show: A themed show on Joe Biden’s biggest accomplishments so far. Joe Biden wins Pennsylvania, pushing him over 270 electoral college and making him the President-elect. Joe Biden has done more good in a week than Donald Trump did in four years. Joe Biden launches air strikes against Syria, reportedly in response to attacks against American troops in Iraq, and at roughly the same time, it appears the $15 minimum wage will be removed from the COVID relief bill. Right wing media and Republicans are absolutely furious at the fast and increasing pace of vaccinations under President Joe Biden, including Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, and many other. President Joe Biden announces full vaccine eligibility starting on April 19, and Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asks Biden about golf. Joe Biden will announce a full withdrawal of all American troops from Afghanistan to be completed no later than September 11, 2021. The House of Representatives finally passes a bipartisan, albeit it much smaller, $1.2 trillion infrastructure package.

THE BRADCAST 6/16/22 (00:58:00)

On Today’s ‘BradCast: Special coverage of Day 3 of the bipartisan U.S. House Select Committee, which is investigating the Trump-incited Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and the disgraced former President’s multiple attempts to steal the 2020 election from the American people. Former Asst. U.S. Attorney and current George Washington University law professor, RANDALL D. ELIASON, and HEATHER DIGBY PARTON of Salon and Hullabaloo offer important insights into today’s hearing, which was focused on Donald Trump’s corrupt pressure campaign to induce former Vice President Mike Pence to violate his oath to the Constitution to steal the 2020 Election for Trump. Witnesses today included arch-conservative former Judge J. Michael Luttig, who advised Pence that he had no legal or Constitutional authority to do anything other than read the Electoral College votes aloud during the joint session of Congress to certify the final results of the 2020 election. In an historic written statement, Judge Luttig said Trump bears ‘responsibility and accountability for his attempt to steal the 2020 presidential election from the American People and thereby steal America’s democracy from America herself.’ The hearing included top Trump and Pence staffers and disturbing, previously unseen footage from the day of the insurrection. It also exposed shocking new revelations, including that Trump knew that Pence did not have legal or constitutional authority to invalidate the election because White House attorneys told him so, repeatedly, and that such an act would be unlawful and unconstitutional. The hearing also revealed that attorney John Eastman, credited with devising the plot, admitted on several occasions that the plan was illegal, including directly to Trump, and sought a pardon after the coup plot failed. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: The Prescience and Vision of Rosa Luxemburg. Who? (00:58:20)

Precapitalist indigenous cultures have a lot to offer us today for a better, greener future. And socialism is not how its pictured. Neglected by the Great Men study of history, Rosa Luxemburg, a 4 11 disabled young woman from what’s now Poland, grew to lead the socialist movement in Europe until she was murdered in 1919. Her vision requires real democracy and development of the full and free individual. As Luxemburg scholar Peter Hudis reveals, much of her brave vision is more applicable than ever in this world so threatened by climate crisis.

The Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN (00:59:30)

Segment One

We talk with Robert Hennelly about Giuliani and the prevalence of the big lie. Right-wing talk show hosts continue to push it to their audience, even though it is obvious this is just a ploy to raise cash for Trump. Disinformation continues. Facts should be marketed with the same intensity. We should strive to reduce the moral injuries caused by the Republicans.

Segment Two:

We talk with Laura Jedeed, who is a freelance journalist based in New York City. Her bylines include Rolling Stone, Salon, and Truth-out. We discuss the Moms for Liberty who are attacking schools and teachers. Their founding, and funding is ambiguous, but it appears that their goal is to get rid of public education. They accuse teachers and schools of ‘grooming’, and they parrot the Republican and MAGA talking points.

JUST SOLUTIONS: Bodies on the Line: At the frontlines of the fight to protect abortion in America (00:29:00)

The Supreme Court looks poised to overturn Roe v. Wade and many states around the country are already passing what are effectively bans on abortion. In communities where clinics remain open, volunteer escorts shepherd patients safely to clinics to receive care in the face of harassment from protestors. Author Lauren Rankin writes about these everyday volunteers who are fighting on the front lines of reproductive rights in her new book Bodies on the Line: At the frontlines of the fight to protect abortion in America.

COUNTERSPIN: Covid & trade, Pandemic insurers (00:28:00)

Some of the worst work that corporate news media do is convince us that simple things are actually, if you just ignore the role of power, more complicated than you could hope to understand. So, yes, Covid is killing millions of people, and yes, there are tests and treatments and vaccines for it, and yes, many countries in need of them—but no, we can’t put those things together, for reasons that you shouldn’t worry your head over. There are in fact people and policies, with names, preventing developing countries from accessing life-saving vaccines. A story being ugly doesn’t mean it isn’t understandable. We talk about it with Lori Wallach, executive director of the group Rethink Trade.

THOM HARTMANN Best of 1 Hour: Like a Monetary Tick on All of Our Backs (00:58:00)

Why do we let bribery corrupt our government so that we have to pay way more for health care and get worse outcomes than in every other developed nation? Bernie Sanders is out there fighting the good fight. And Alex Lawson is on the show with the latest Republican plans to dismantle social security.

(8PM only) TIME WITH FRED: Illegitimate Sun

In this podcast, my guest shares his experiences from growing up in the segregated south to a single mother, to becoming one of the Navy’s top cryptologists. He credits most of his accomplishments to the strong influence of his mother, and the support of mentors he met along the way. He is the author of the book, Illegitimate Sun.

SEA CHANGE RADIO: The Promise of Psychedelic Therapy (00:29:00)

Psychologist and pop culture icon of the 1960s, Timothy Leary, famously instructed San Francisco hippies to take psychedelic drugs in order to “turn on, tune in, and drop out.” These days there’s a movement in psychology, also centered in Northern California, advancing the use of psychedelics, as well. But the agenda is less about dropping out than about treating serious mental health challenges. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to two people about the intriguing new breakthrough that is ketamine therapy. First, we talk to Oli Mittermeier, the CEO and Co-founder of CIT Clinics to get a glimpse of his company’s innovative approach to ketamine treatment for depression, bipolar, and PTSD. Then, we hear from Reuben Steiger, an entrepreneur who found relief from decades of struggling with depression and bipolar through ketamine therapy.

COOL SOLUTIONS: Irresistible Force Beats Immovable Object: Harvard (finally) divests (00:28:00)

It took 9 years, and student, faculty, and alumni actions ranging from conventional to confrontational to creatively original. In the end, it was likely fear of having its own reputation besmirched by association with an already stigmatized fossil fuel industry, that led the Harvard Corporation to divest. Students, faculty, and alumni tell their stories.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 6/16/22 (00:56:42)

On the Show: Evidence is presented at the January 6 Committee Trump riot hearings that Donald Trump was told his plan to overturn the election was illegal, but he continued to push it regardless. Evidence is presented at the January 6 Committee Trump riot hearings that Donald Trump’s lawyer, John Eastman, knew the plan he was proposing to overturn the election was illegal, and he even wanted a pardon from Trump in advance. Revelations from the January 6 Committee Trump riot hearings show that rioters got to within 40 feet of then-Vice President Mike Pence, and that the Proud Boys indeed would have killed Pence had they gotten the chance. Caller wonders why people like listening to Dave Ramsey. Caller talks about the importance of trade and vocational schools. Caller talks about the controversy surrounding Herschel Walker abandoning his kids. Caller talks about the media’s role in inspiring mass shootings. Join us when Menand argues that the Fed significantly exceeded the bounds of its legal authority and, more broadly, that using the Fed as our primary instrument of economic policymaking skews our economy in favor of the rich, furthering our economic divide on this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large.

LITERATURE ALOUD: Looking Backward 2000-1887 by Edward Bellamy ch. 23-25 (00:36:37)

WINGS #09-22: Wade in the Water-Part 1 of 2 (00:28:59)

As of 2022 Juneteenth is a US federal holiday. First celebrated by Black communities in Texas, it marks June 19th, 1865, when Union troops arrived at the port of Galveston, to enforce Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. While Americans celebrate that enslaved people were freed, many refuse to hear the cruel facts of slavery or allow them to be taught. The late Marian E. Barnes was a storyteller, author, historian, child advocate, and Black community leader in Austin, Texas. This week and next you hear her read her story based on historical records – a story nobody would publish because it depicts some of the cruel and violent practices and ways of speaking that slaveholders used to control and abuse their captives, throughout what Barnes terms 300 years of holocaust. Part two (released on audioport next week) includes a warning to listeners. No FCC rules are violated.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 6/16/22 (00:57:49)

On the Show: Gary Stevenson, inequality economist and former interest rates trader, joins David to discuss why the wealth gap is bad for the economy and how to actually reduce inequality. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ wife, Ginny Thomas, is directly implicated in the January 6 Trump riots after emails leak showing her corresponding with Trump lawyer John Eastman. Mehmet Oz and Doug Mastriano, the two Trump-endorsed Republican candidates in Pennsylvania, are both losing to Democrats in the latest polling. Republican Congressman Barry Loudermilk is implicated in giving future January 6 rioters a tour of the Capitol, which he denies, and he gives a very strange interview to Fox News’ Laura Ingraham pleading his case. Republican Congressman Ronny Jackson, who is also Donald Trump’s former doctor, gleefully tweets about Dr. Anthony Fauci having COVID. It is revealed that Trump-endorsed Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker, who criticizes absentee fathers, has multiple children that he doesn’t see. Rudy Giuliani quietly deletes tweets claiming that he was not drunk on election night 2020. The Eggman leaves a voicemail telling wild stories of his time in prison.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 6/15/22 (00:54:09)

On the Show: An explainer on inflation, including how inflation itself eventually reduces inflation. Republicans, including Mitch McConnell, suddenly signal support for the new gun safety bill, which is a very weak bill. Donald Trump explodes on Truth Social as the January 6 Trump riot committee hearings crush him. Donald Trump claims to have written an outrageous 12-page letter responding to the January 6 committee Trump riot hearings. Donald Trump Jr’s then-girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle was paid $60,000 in Trump donor money to speak for barely more than two minutes at the January 6 Washington DC rally. Technical disasters hilariously plague former Fox News host Greta Van Susteren’s first episode on the radical right wing media outlet Newsmax. Radical right wing Newsmax host Chris Salcedo wildly claims that Nancy Pelosi wants Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh killed so that Joe Biden can appoint a new justice. Pro-Trump Republican candidate Mark Burns calls for the killing of the parents of LGBT kids. Formerly gay right-wing provocateur Mile Yiannopoulos is now interning with radical Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, and is also her podcast sidekick in a bizarre turn of events. THE POSITIVE MIND: The Boy Crisis: With Dr. Warren Farrell PhD (00:58:04)

In honor of Father’s Day, Kevin and Niseema welcome Dr. Warren Farrell PhD, author of The Boy Crisis: Why Our Boys are Struggling and What We Can Do About It. The crisis? More and more boys are growing up without fathers. This leads them to not only miss out on the father/son bond, but also to a higher likelihood of high school dropout, use of drugs, and a whole host of mental health vulnerabilities. Respecting the roles fathers can have with their sons gives us insight into how nurturing the “father instinct” leads to a more stable home, life, and society.

Dr. Warren Farrell’s books include: The Myth of Male Power, Women Can’t Hear What Men Don’t Say, Does Feminism Discriminate Against Men? and Why Men Are The Way They Are.

Get the latest book: https://amzn.to/3MPytNf “Big massive dumps” go viral at the second day of the Donald Trump January 6 riot hearings. Every single one of Donald Trump’s 2020 election lies is brutally debunked during the second day of the Donald Trump January 6 riot committee hearings. It is alleged at the Trump riot hearings that Donald Trump was taking advice from a drunk Rudy Giuliani in the immediate aftermath of the 2020 election. It appears that the Trump Official Election Defense Fund didn’t really exist and was merely another scam fundraising vehicle. Rudy Giuliani admits that the January 6 rally and subsequent march to the Capitol was indeed to try to steal electoral votes, and thus the election. Former White House Counsel Norm Eisen believes that Donald Trump will be prosecuted in Georgia for his attempt to steal the election from Joe Biden. Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says that peaceful protesters at the Supreme Court are “an insurrection.” A very sad and sick Trumpist believes that John F Kennedy and John F Kennedy, Jr are currently President and Vice President, respectively. RADIO ART HOUR: Jacki Apple (00:58:00)

This week, two works from Jacki Apple from the New American Radio archives are featured. First, “Voices in the Dark” is a radio work for outer and inner space, in four sections. The cosmos is an audio archive of information broadcast to the stars, a repository of human (and perhaps other) histories in which time melts and language dissolves into signals. All those “voices” traversing the universe looking for a pick-up! Imagine gridlock in the big data bank in outer space. “Voices in the Dark” is about interstellar conversations, radio waves, and sonic archaeology. Is there anyone listening and how do they interpret what they hear? How do we/they distinguish between real events and people, and media-generated fictions? Are we the “they”? We say we want to make contact with the Other, when in fact what we search for is a mirror of ourselves. This composition combines a narrative text with various musical, vocal, and sound components snatched from the airwaves, overdubbed, sampled, remixed, and electronically orchestrated. Then tune in “Swan Lake.” A satiric, ironic film noire “ballet” for radio, the original Swan Lake narrative is recast and resituated amidst the glittering surfaces and dark underside of late eighties Los Angeles where dreams are manufactured in media land, art and entertainment tongue kiss, the third world coexists in a parallel realm, and the weather is unnatural. Using radio as a cinematic medium, Apple’s remake employs various pop genres including Raymond Chandler’s detective novels, TV fashion commercials, and a sensational murder trial. This filmic version is about seduction, voyeurism, and the consumption of images, with the Swan playing the part of Art. The lush romanticism of Tchaikovsky’s original ballet music is juxtaposed against a percussive, techno-eclectic, edgy film score by L.A. composers Joseph Berardi and Kira Vollman. Commissioned by New American Radio.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 6/13/22 (00:51:17)

On the Show: Producer Pat Ford fills in for David today. Ten Senate Republicans agree to support a comprehensive bill regarding gun control and mental health funding. The new CPI data shows year-over-year inflation at 8.6% and the national average for gas prices reaches $5 per gallon. Donald Trump makes a Truth Social post being critical of his daughter Ivanka after her video testimony was used on day one of the January 6th hearings. Fox News ran interference for Trump and his allies during day one of the January 6th hearings, refusing to the play the audio from it and showing Tucker Carlson instead. Truth Social is reportedly censoring users’ posts about the January 6th hearings in an epic display of hypocrisy for the supposed “free speech” social media platform. Congressman Matt Gaetz says Representative Jamie Raskin shouldn’t be on the January 6th committee because the trauma from losing his son will “cloud his judgement.” The decision about whether to indict Trump in the Georgia election fraud case should be coming in the next couple of weeks. Kyle Rittenhouse announces he’s going to Texas A&M University, but the school disagrees and says he hasn’t been admitted there. OAN cuts to a generic viagra commercial after doing a fluff piece about Donald Trump in a hilariously awkward transition. THE BRADCAST 6/10/22: Special Coverage of House Jan. 6 Hearings, Day 1 (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: We kick off our special coverage of the first public hearing of the bipartisan U.S. House Select Committee investigating Donald Trump’s unprecedented attempt to steal the 2020 Presidential election, culminating in the deadly January 6, 2021 insurrection that he incited. The Jan. 6 Committee presented a gripping, and at times emotional, first prime-time hearing, beginning to lay out their case with new, as-yet-unheard evidence putting Trump at the center of a coordinated, 7-point coup plot to prevent the peaceful transfer of power for the first time in our nation’s history. The hearing included new witnesses testifying publicly for the first time; chilling, never-before-seen footage of the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol; and stunning video-taped testimony from a number of Trump’s top officials and his own family members. The evidence revealed so far clearly establishes that Trump knew there was no proof to support his claim that he lost the election due to ‘fraud,’ that he violated his oath in taking no action to stop the attack on the U.S. Capitol, and that the plot to steal the 2020 election was broad and coordinated, including Congressional Republicans and extremist groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. The panel also detailed what we will learn over a series of at least 5 more hearings over the next two weeks. Salon’s award-winning opinion journalist HEATHER ‘DIGBY’ PARTON and former U.S. Army Captain and attorney KEITH BARBER of Medium join us for analysis and insights into the first day of the historic hearings, their scope and impact, what they hope to see from the hearings in the days ahead, and much more…

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 6/10/22 (00:57:46)

Part 1: We talk with Scott Braddock, editor of the Quorum Report, and the Voice of TX, the dean of the Austin Press Corps. We discuss the Uvalde massacre of the children and teachers. The House has passed a 21year old age limit for the purchase of high capacity weapons and ammunition. It is anticipated that the Republicans in the Senate will not go along, despite the pleas by the victims, doctors, and the victims’ families. The Republicans are beholden to the gun groups. There are two anti-gun messengers in Texas: Matthew McConaughey and Beto ORourke. Both talked about responsible gun ownership. It is telling that officeholders have NOT been punished by voters.

Part 2: We talk with Bill Curry and Harold Meyerson Curry is a two-time candidate for governor of Connecticut, and Meyerson is the editor of The American Prospect. Don’t concede and election before it is run This is the sentiment that Curry urges, despite all the doom saying about the 2022 elections. We discuss what voters will remember before voting. There are several topics that might weigh heavily: Buffalo and Uvaldi, the insurrection, inflation. We also talk about sustainable energy initiatives, and compare the US with Australia. We also discuss housing problems in the US.

THE BRADCAST 06/09/22: Special Coverage of House Jan.

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: The “Moms for Liberty” Nightmare for American Schools  (00:55:38)

Of course all parents want to protect their children from inappropriate material. But when parental rights mean teachers are forbidden from mentioning homosexuality or racism because that means teachers are grooming kids for pedophilia or Chinese communism, liberty is under threat. Hypocritically enough, the vanguard of this threat is from something called Moms For Liberty. On this show, from her writing in The New Republic, Laura Jedeed examines the serious chilling effect on teachers and education. And how social media has encouraged people to believe what they want. Elections coming up!

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 6/11/22 (00:59:30)

Segment One: We talk with Jennifer Maloney about the crisis in the baby formula supply. Jennifer Maloney is a corporate reporter for The Wall Street Journal in New York, covering the beverage and tobacco industries as well as the broader business world. Part of the supply problem with baby formula is that there has been a drastic reduction in breast feeding in the US in recent years, made even more critical by the additional reduction during the pandemic. There are many reasons, and we discuss them. Now, only 14% of babies are breast feeding.

Segment Two: We talk with Dr. Ana Malinow about the Medicare Advantage plans being marketed, and what they represent. Medicare costs are discussed and explained. We learn about risk scores, up-coding and capitation. We also learn about the trend to privatize Medicare.

TUC RADIO: Tribute to Hazel Henderson and Edward Goldsmith – Visionaries of a New Economy (00:29:00)

On May 7, 2022, I heard Hazel Henderson in a spirited one hour interview on the Ralph Nader Radio Hour. She was introduced as Naders personal friend and advocate for economic models that are based on principles of cooperation and sharing in our abundance. She sadly died, age 89, only two weeks after the interview. Here is my tribute in memory of Hazel Henderson. I met her in 1993 and recorded her whenever she visited San Francisco. This is my archival recording of Hazel Henderson from the Healthy Cities and Communities Conference in SF in December 1993. She was applauded as a world-renowned futurist, evolutionary economist, a syndicated columnist, consultant on sustainable development, and author of the award-winning book entitled, Ethical Markets: Growing the Green Economy. Hazel Henderson campaigned, along with notables such as Edward Goldsmith and Ralph Nader, against the emerging trade agreements – such as NAFTA and GATT, The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade that was later renamed the World Trade Organization. Here is my recording of Edward Goldsmith and his critique of Global Trade. In the early 1990s I had become part of a campaign to derail or fundamentally redirect the global trade negotiations – most of my radio work was done in association with the IFG, the International Forum on Globalization. I recorded Edward Teddy Goldsmith in 1994 and published him and Hazel Henderson in a 13 part TUC Radio series under the title: The Secret Side of Free Trade. This re-broadcast from the TUC Radio archives of The Secret Side of Free Trade is to honor the legacy of Hazel Henderson, who died on May 22, 2022, and in honor of Edward Goldsmith who died on August 21, 2009.

LOPATE AT LARGE: Rachel E. Gross on Vagina Obscura (00:52:02)

According to author Rachel E. Gross, a camera obscura reflects the world back but dimmer and inverted. Similarly, science has long viewed woman through a warped lens, one focused narrowly on her capacity for reproduction. As a result, there exists a vast knowledge gap when it comes to what we know about half of the bodies on the planet.

That is finally changing. Today, a new generation of researchers is turning its gaze to the organs traditionally bound up in baby-making “the uterus, ovaries, and vagina” and illuminating them as part of a dynamic, resilient, and ever-changing whole. Welcome to Vagina Obscura, an odyssey into a woman’s body from a fresh perspective, ushering in a whole new cast of characters. Join us when journalist Rachel E. Gross takes us on a scientific journey to the center of a wonderous world where the uterus regrows itself, ovaries pump out fresh eggs, and the clitoris pulses beneath the surface like a shimmering pyramid of nerves on this episode of Leonard Lopate at Large.

LITERATURE ALOUD: Looking Backward 2000-1887 by Edward Bellamy ch.15-16 (00:26:59)

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 6/9/22 (00:55:51)

On the Show: A themed show about vaccine mandates. Trump supporters are absolutely furious about Joe Biden’s plan to enact a 100-day mask mandate that will apply only to federal buildings and modes of transit regulated by the federal government like airplanes, trains and buses. A judge rules that Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott cannot enforce his ban on mask mandates. Fox News host Chris Wallace confronts Republican Governor Pete Ricketts about his opposition to a COVID vaccine requirement despite having no issue with a chickenpox or polio vaccine requirement. Fox News hosts lie about their own vaccine mandate, claiming it is merely a protocol, a meaningless distinction without a practical difference. Fox News propagandist Tucker Carlson is finally confronted about Fox News’ own vaccine mandate. Fox Host Pete Hegseth is triggered when interviewed by Mediaite’s Aidan McLaughlin about his criticism of Joe Biden’s vaccine mandate despite Fox News having its own stricter mandate. Mask mandates are quickly being eliminated in a variety of states, including blue states, but not everyone agrees that it’s time. Voicemail caller points out that the new US trucker convoy and others are protesting so-called “mandates” that do not even exist in the United States. MAKING CONTACT: The Agony and the Ecstasy: Race and the Future of the Love Story Part 2 (00:29:00)

In 2019 a well known romance writer began tweeting about other writers in her community and concerns about racism. It led to a huge reckoning within an organization called the Romance Writers of America, which is still unfolding. And although the online debate seemed to be isolated to a specific community of romance writers and their fans, it was really a microcosm of what’s been happening all over the US. We learn all about romance novels and how newer writers are changing the norms of the genre, and giving it a political power it’s never had before. And, we talk about what it means for organizations to change as they grapple with questions of race, including organizations such as ours, at Making Contact.

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones turns on Donald Trump over his recent pro-vaccine statements, calling him “ignorant” and “evil.” Republican Congressman Dan Crenshaw accurately calls out Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene for attention-seeking around her Twitter ban, and Greene quickly turns on Crewnshaw. The smear campaign of Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis by Donald Trump for 2024 has started. Former Vice President Mike Pence turns on Trump in a speech to the Federalist Society, explaining he had no right to overturn the 2020 election results, and Donald Trump absolutely loses it in response. One of Donald Trump’s former White House Press Secretaries, Stephanie Grisham, apologizes for working for Trump, calling him a “con man.” An argument and almost a physical fight break out at an Ohio Republican Senate primary debate between candidates Josh Mandel and Mike Gibbons

RADIO ART HOUR: Sally Ann McIntyre (00:58:00)

Tune in to three works from New Zealand-based radio artist Sally Ann McIntyre, “three variations on a study for a data deficient species (grey ghost transmission), “a lagoon, considered against its archival image,” and an electrical discharge, “a sea of burning oil slicks.” Introduced by Karen Werner. New Zealand-based radio artist Sally Ann McIntyre created three variations on a study for a data deficient species (grey ghost transmission) in 2017. The piece focuses on a New Zealand bird species, the South Island kkako, which may or may not be extinct, no one knows for sure. The bird species was nicknamed the grey ghost for its hauntingly beautiful, mournful, slow, loud song. The only existing recordings of the kkako, included in the piece, are fragmentary and elusive–more of an absence than a presence. McIntyre writes, In these recordings, the bird hovers on the edge of audibility, refusing to be pinned down to monumental extinction narratives, just as it destabilizes…imperial ecology, by remaining outside Western scientific forms of knowing which rely on the verification of empirical evidence. The piece includes a musical score based on written documentation of the kkakos song as described in private letters and publications. This score is performed on piano, violin, clavichord and harpsichord. Another notable element of the piece is Maori musician Rob Thorne improvising on traditional instruments. He does a call-and-response to a field recording I sent him of the data deficient bird’s endangered cousin, the North Island kkako, which I made on the bird sanctuary Kapiti Island. My recording remains inaudible in the final piece, making Rob’s haunting playing of the traditional instrument a space in which only the ghosts of the missing bird are left to respond. You can also hear recordings of natural radio played back through very unstable microcast transmitters and flocks of radios. three variations on a study for a data deficient species (grey ghost transmission) was commissioned by Radiophrenia, an annual pop-up radio station in Glasgow, Scotland. Read Sally Ann McIntyres more detailed description of the piece at http://radiocegeste.blogspot.com. – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2019/2020, Karen Werner.

LITERATURE ALOUD: Looking Backward 2000-1887 by Edward Bellamy preface & ch.10-11 (00:30:17)

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 6/6/22 (00:52:32)

On the Show: Assault rifle says predictably skyrocket in the aftermath of recent mass shootings. Radical Republican Congressman Steve Scalise blames “defund the police” for gun violence in the United States. Former Vice President Mike Pence’s Secret Service team was warned that Donald Trump’s rhetoric on January 6 might endanger Pence. Mehmet Oz wins his Pennsylvania Republican Senate primary and he will face Democratic nominee John Fetterman after Oz’s opponent, Dave McCormick, concedes. Former Donald Trump adviser Peter Navarro is arrested, handcuffed, booked and indicted for his contempt of Congress related to the January 6 Trump riot committee, and Donald Trump absolutely loses it. Former Attorney General Eric Holder believes that Donald Trump and his top staffers will ultimately be criminally indicted. The forthcoming January 6 committee primetime hearings will reportedly contain explosive video of testimony from Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. Radical Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis again leads Donald Trump in a 2024 Republican straw poll for the Republican presidential nomination. OAN host Ailson Steinberg rants about “globalists” tracking her through her Nest thermostat. New York Republican Congressman Chris Jacobs, who recently expressed openness to gun control regulations, has been abandoned by the Republican Party and will not run for re-election. Voicemail caller dispels that notion that cannabis leads to mass shootings.

THE BRADCAST 6/3/22 (00:57:53)

Encore: Original air-date 5/24/2022. On today’s ‘BradCast’: It’s midterm primary day in Alabama, Arkansas and Georgia, with runoffs in Texas. So far, there are few reports of major voting or voting system problems. In Georgia, new reporting shows how changes to the format of the state Department of Driver Services’ website caused a huge crash in voter registration numbers, yet when ‘opt-out’ automatic voter registration was restored in March, voter registration rates skyrocketed. Naturally, GA’s Republican Sec. of State Brad Raffensperger has called for ending automatic voter registration. Republicans only pretend to care about election fraud, as evidenced by the enormous election fraud scandal unfolding in Michigan, which builds on our previous reporting of a similar fraud scheme falsifying voter signatures in 2012. A new investigation into Republican election fraud by the Michigan Bureau of Elections found that TEN top GOP candidates for the governor’s seat submitted at least 68,000 falsified signatures on petitions to qualify for the ballot. Michigan’s bipartisan Board of State Canvassers will now meet to decide which candidates will be disqualified from the August 2nd midterm primary. Republicans committed actual, documented election fraud in Michigan in the 2022 governor’s race while falsely accusing Democrats of perpetrating ‘massive election fraud.’ Late-breaking: another horrific school shooting, this time in the town of Uvalde, Texas. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’    Brad Friedman, Desi Doyen.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 6/3/22 (00:57:55)

Part one:

Our regular check in with Scott Braddock, the editor of the Quorum Report, the Voice of TX, the dean of the Austin Press Corps. We discuss the situation in Texas, following the Uvalde massacre. The story is developing.

Ken Paxton won the primary, defeating Bush 70-30%, signaling the end of the Bush political dynasty. Both men are trumpers. Abbott, the governor, made time on the day of the shooting, to attend a fund raiser. It is too tragic to note that after events like this, many states loosened their gun laws, and all other events are discussed, as distractions.

Gun makers stocks rose in the wake of the murders.

Part two

We talk with Stephen Pimpare and Bill Curry. Curry is an American lawyer and politician, a two time Democratic nominee for Governor of Connecticut, White House advisor, and was head of Freeze Voter. Stephen Pimpare is director of the Public Service and Nonprofit Leadership Program at the University of New Hampshire. He is the author of The New Victorians: Poverty, Politics, and Propaganda in Two Gilded Ages(2004);A Peoples History of Poverty in America(2008); and Ghettos, Tramps, and Welfare Queens: Down and Out on the Silver Screen(2017) and Politics for Social Workers (2021) We discuss how journalists are being targeted, particularly in New Hampshire, where the homes of journalists have been vandalized. This has NOT been reported in NH papers or media, except public radio. The Washington Post has reported this. We discuss corruption in government, including local government. Democrats are making promised during campaigns, but not following through once elected.

THE BRADCAST 6/2/22: Dr. David Jefferson on CA’s terrible new Internet Voting proposal (00:58:00)

Encore: Original airdate 5/23/2022. On today’s ‘BradCast’: President Biden declared that the U.S. would respond ‘militarily’ if China were to invade Taiwan. A young Russian soldier pleaded guilty to war crimes in Ukraine. A veteran Russian diplomat in Geneva resigned on Monday, defying Russia’s well-funded global propaganda campaign, declaring his opposition to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, saying he is ‘ashamed of my country.’ Primaries will be held on Tuesday in Alabama, Arkansas and Georgia. In California, dozens of world-class voting system and cybersecurity experts are opposing a dangerous new bill in the state legislature (SB1480) that would allow Internet Voting. While billed as a measure to make voting easier for the disabled, the security experts opposing the bill warn it is a first step toward full implementation of internet voting despite the massive, egregious security risks to verifiable elections. Election security expert DR. DAVID JEFFERSON, a veteran of Livermore National Labs and former board member of VerifiedVoting.org, explains the many reasons why SB 1480 is a horrible idea that must be stopped, including the lack of security, secrecy, and verifiability, the inability to detect tampering, and much more. Longtime election integrity advocates at Scrutineers.org have created an action page on SB 1480 at Scrutineers.org/California, with details on the legislation and steps voters can take right now to stop this dangerous idea in California and prevent it from spreading to the rest of the nation.

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: To Win: Listen to and Respect the Voiceless  (00:59:13)

When national Democrats acted as if we need to educate them, someone who at least pretends to listen and respect wins. They have fear that what little they have may be taken away. The real change comes not from mere electoral politics but in connecting with people where they are. And out of this two years of pandemic isolation, its community that keeps us going. How is it that Democratic reactions after 9/11 led to quiescence? On this show author Beverly Gologorsky talks about how passion, noise from the streets, is essential. Her new book: Can You See the Wind? is about invisible but real change. Listen in for this shot of optimism.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN (00:59:30)

Segment One:
College is now in their sights: We talk with Kathryn Joyce, an investigative reporter at Salon, and the author of two books. Republicans are channeling tax dollars to right-wing institutes at colleges across the nation. What’s the endgame? We talk about the schools where this has been introduced, in Florida, Tennessee, and other states. Tax money is being used.

Segment Two:

We talk with Stephen Pimpare and Bill Curry. Curry is an American lawyer and politician, a two time Democratic nominee for Governor of Connecticut, White House advisor, and was head of Freeze Voter. GROWING GREENER: The Surprising Downside of #NoMowMay (00:29:00)

#NoMowMay is an international movement that has been gaining widespread popularity in the United States. Its goal is to persuade gardeners to stop mowing their grass during the month of May so that lawn weeds such as dandelions and white clover may flower and provide early spring pollen and nectar for insect pollinators. A laudable impulse, but Dr. Sheila Colla of York University and her colleagues biologist Heather Holm and native plants stalwart Lorraine Johnson have published an article in Rewilding Magazine detailing why this isnt the best means of fostering native pollinators in North America.

Seattle Washington is home to Amazon, Microsoft, Starbucks, and seven more Fortune 500s. Kshama Sawant helped lead the fight, in 2014, that made Seattle the first major American city to mandate a $15 an hour minimum wage. She and her allies took on Jeff Bezos and pushed through a business tax that increased city revenues by an estimated $230 million a year. In December 2021 Amazon had spent over $3 million to recall her but failed. Here are excerpts of an inspiring conversation between Kshama Sawant and Chris Hedges, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, author and former foreign correspondent for The New York Times. Chris Hedges interviewed Sawant on May 27, 2022, on his program on the Real News Network. Hedges is the host of The Chris Hedges Report, (therealnews.com/chris-hedges-report) and he publishes columns on (sheerpost.com). JUST SOLUTIONS: Free School Lunches for ALL Children (00:29:00)

Millions of children in this country face hunger every day. Black and Latino children and children from single parent families are disproportionately more likely to be impacted due to systemic inequalities. One of the programs that has been trying to tackle this is the school lunch program. During the pandemic, the U.S.D.A introduced a meal waiver program so that any student who needed a free meal at school could receive one regardless of their families income. But that program is coming to an end. Our guest today is Dr. Robert S. Harvey, president of FoodCorps, one of the thousands of food justice organizations calling on Congress to extend the waiver. As a former educator, Dr. Harvey says “Hungry kids ” no matter their socioeconomic background ” simply can’t learn.”

SEA CHANGE RADIO: Guns and White Power (00:29:00)

The term “civil liberties” may connote different associations, depending on where you fall on the political spectrum. While some connect the term with the struggle for racial justice or reproductive freedom, for others it may evoke a belief in their right to bear arms. This week’s guest on Sea Change Radio is John Stoehr, the founder and publisher of The Editorial Board. In the wake of the latest horrific rounds of gun violence in this country, Stoehr reflects on how America’s lack of gun regulations reveals deeper societal flaws. He explains how the violent fervor surrounding so-called 2nd Amendment rights stems from a power structure rooted in white male dominance. He also connects the dots to the impending repeal of reproductive protections and xenophobic approaches to immigration.

THE LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: Abbott Elementary Teaches Us All: Sheryl Lee Ralph & Joyce Abbott   (00:28:00)

Can you remember the last time when the challenges that inner city public school teachers face were the subject of a popular TV series? Abbott Elementary ” which has just been renewed for a second season on ABC ” does just that. The Philadelphia school on TV is fictional, but the challenges it faces are all too real. Closely based on the school that series creator (and star) Quinta Brunson attended, and especially her experiences with Ms. Abbott, her 6th grade teacher, the show combines art, education and activism. On this months Meet The BIPOC Press with URL Media, real-life educator Joyce Abbott joins acclaimed actress and activist Sheryl Lee Ralph from the series, to discuss what the show’s success shows us about this moment, when educators, especially teachers of color, are leaving the profession in droves. Can a TV show help stem the tide, shift the culture and change policy? Among her many accolades, Ralph starred in the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls. Is quality education for all, a dream? Laura Flanders and co-hosts Mitra Kalita and Sara Lomax-Reese don’t think it should be.

WINGS #07-22 Battered Women’s Defense (00:28:50)

Speaking to a group of attorneys in Kansas City, forensic psychologist Dr. Lenore Walker explains the development of battered women’s syndrome as closely akin to the PTSD suffered by soldiers in battle. The effects of repeated trauma can create an overwhelming sense of threat and terror even when not in the throes of an immediate attack. This understanding can be used to defend women who kill their abusers, who have often been handed more severe sentences than those given men who kill the women they are abusing.

Love them or hate them, guns are woven deeply into the American soul. Names like Colt, Smith & Wesson, Winchester, and Remington are legendary. Yet few people are aware of the roles these men played at a crucial time in United States history, from westward expansion in the 1840s, through the Civil War, and into the dawn of the Gilded Age. Through personal drive and fueled by bloodshed, they helped propel the young country into the forefront of the world’s industrial powers.
