WHEN THE BIOMASS HITS THE WIND TURBINE # 141 ” Electric Vehicles Become Macho (00:29:27)

For years, pretty much since their inception, electric vehicles (EVs) have been viewed by the general public and something of interest only to tree hugging liberals. All that is about to change. 2022 will see the release of a number of full size pickup truck EVs, first to be released will be the Ford Lightning (Ford’s F150 pickup gone electric). This vehicle promises to turn the EV market on its head – and make electric the new “muscle car” of the coming decades.
Join Annie and Jay Warmke from Blue Rock Station for a look at the Ford Lightning and what that may mean to the automotive world and the world in general.

RADIO ART HOUR: Jon Brumit, Earwax Productions with David Lawrence (00:58:00)

This week tune in two radio art works: “Catch & Release: Critical Mass” by Jon Brumit, introduced by Jess Speer and “Virtual Paradise”The Reality Tape” by Earwax Productions with David Lawrence. Neighborhood Public Radio is a project led by Lee Montgomery, Linda Arnejo, Michael Trigilio, and Jon Brumit that creates short-term microbroadcasting stations in communities and supports community and artist-created content for broadcast. The projects name, acronym, and even logo are intended as critiques of National Public Radio, making the argument that truly non-commercial and community-based programming can be more powerful and meaningful to people than corporate-sponsored public content. In a 2005 interview with Punk Planet, founder Lee Montgomery admitted, on a certain level, what we are trying to emulate is what National Public Radio used to be, contrasting coverage of Vietnam War protests by National Public Radio in the 1970s in which reporters immersed in the protests letting the people around them tell their stories, to contemporary coverage of global protests against the Iraq War consisting of brief reports from journalists in different sites reporting from above the crowd and little more than estimates of numbers of people. The Neighborhood Public Radio project has riffed on other National Public Radio themes, producing a crowdsourced show called American Life that included broadcasts from Portable Radio Instruments (PRI), a riff on distributor Public Radio International and its popular show This American Life. Since its founding in 2004, Neighborhood Public Radio installations have taken place in galleries, museums, art festivals, and store fronts in a wide array of cities including San Francisco, San Diego, Chicago, and Hamburg, and were included as part of the Whitney Biennial in 2008. Installations often include partnerships with local community organizations and artists to create programming, workshops on creating transmitters and other electronic instruments, performances, and interactive broadcasting events that invite the community to be part of the stations content. During the 2004 installation of NPR at the Southern Exposure Gallery in San Francisco, artist Jon Brumit hosted a regular program called Catch & Release, which featured content gleaned from the streets of the neighborhood, as well as interviews and performances by artists and musicians, musings on garbage and revenge, and a live broadcast from Critical Mass in San Francisco. In this, the first episode, Brumits remote transmitter wasnt working so he presented recordings taken from the streets on his Broadcast Bike, a bike modified with a drainpipe to function essentially as a large phono cartridge on the street, amplifying the sounds of potholes and other street textures, as well as recordings from a Honda Civic Brumit modified to become a percussion instrument/traveling performance. – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2020/2021, Jess Speer. Earwax Productions with David Lawrence bring an exciting production created in the spirit of the technology it focuses on in this hour’s second art work. “Virtual Paradise” examines the ideas, issues, and attitudes that currently surround virtual reality. As this technology evolves, it brings with it the potential for redefining our most basic assumptions about media, experience, and reality. Virtual Paradise features many voices recorded at Cyberthon, a 24-hour virtual reality event presented by Whole Earth Institute in 1990. It also includes interviews with such visionaries as science-fiction author William Gibson, VR architect Jaron Lanier, artificial reality pioneer Myron Krueger, and Timothy Leary all intercut with music and sound effects and shaped into a highly entertaining and insightful “virtual” tape composition. Virtual Paradise was the winner of the 1994 AIR Award for Innovation and Excellence. Production assistance by New American Radio. 1992-1993.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Iron Heel by Jack London Chapter 19 – 20 (00:31:37)

Published in 1908, this is a novel about a socialist revolution that was crushed for centuries by an oligarchy of wealth before ultimately reviving and building a more just and compassionate world. Portrayed as an illicit revolutionary journal written by Avis Everhard, London chooses a woman to narrate the great need for social justice, the progress of the revolution, its rationale and her sometimes starry-eyed love for the main character Ernest Everhard. Written after London was jailed for participating in a jobs march, this short and action-packed novel is London’s most detailed outline of his socialist views and the logic of a socialist revolution. FREE CULTURE RADIO: Talking Tea: A Conversation with Veerinder Chawla from Tao of Tea (00:28:42)

On this edition of Free Culture Radio were going to talk about one of the world’s most widely used drugs. It would be hard to overstate the impact that this substance and the culture surrounding it has had on nations and peoples around the world, it’s even played a part in wars ” not surprising really, it’s been an important commodity in international trade for centuries. If you haven’t already guessed, I’m referring to tea. Lately, it’s become my drug of choice. Thing is, I’m a total novice, so I sat down recently with Veerinder Chawla from The Tao of Tea in Portland, Oregon, to enjoy a cuppa and learn about this wonderful beverage.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 1/31/22 (00:55:31)

On the Show: Nearly 500 New Jersey bridges have the same rating as the Pittsburgh bridge that recently collapsed. Well-known and much celebrated anti-vaccine police officer Robert Lemay, who appeared on Fox News and resigned over the Washington vaccine mandate, has died of COVID. Donald Trump holds his second rally of the 2022 election season, this time in Conroe, Texas, and he threatens more riots while dangling pardons for the January 6 Trump rioters in a dangerous and corrosive rally. Trump rally attendees in Conroe, Texas are interviewed, and it’s both horrifying and disturbing. Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn is now pushing George Soros Bill Gates COVID conspiracy theories. Former Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachman praises and commends Sarah Palin for going out to restaurants in New York City while sick with COVID. Donald Trump admits that he wanted former Vice President Mike Pence to steal the 2020 election for him in a deranged new press release. Fox News Host Julie Banderas humiliates herself by slamming Joe Biden for not passing an infrastructure bill, which he actually did months ago with bipartisan support. Voicemail caller is very angry that David stated there are some authoritarian leftists who defend strongman authoritarian regimes.

THE BRADCAST 1/28/22: Guest: Lynn Bernstein of Transparent Elections NC (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: We are determined to take back the REAL fight for Election Integrity from the MAGA ‘Stop the Steal’ loons and dupes who have no actual interest in transparent, verifiable elections, and will continue countering rightwing attempts to co-opt the idea of election integrity as part of Donald Trump’s efforts to steal the 2020 election and future elections. In Pittsburgh, a crumbling bridge collapsed hours before President Biden’s speech to promote the bipartisan infrastructure bill, while Fox News anchors lied about it. A federal judge revoked new Gulf of Mexico offshore oil and gas leases on the grounds that they were based on a flawed environmental assessment conducted by the Trump Administration. The ruling was a welcome victory for the Biden Administration, which had tried to cancel the lease sale, a fact omitted from corporate media headlines. The Justice Department’s Election Threats Task Force arrested another Trump follower who threatened election officials. LYNN BERNSTEIN, founder of the non-partisan Transparent Elections NC in North Carolina, discusses the surge in threats and intimidation targeting election integrity advocates, as well. Bernstein has gone public with chilling incidents she has personally experienced, as her organization works to ensure that voting systems sold by ESS, the nation’s largest computerized voting vendor, undergo a comprehensive independent source code review required by state law. Bernstein explains security concerns with ESS’s unverifiable bar-code ballot systems, and why the nation’s election security experts call for hand-marked paper ballots. Also today: The House January 6 Committee subpoenaed 14 people from 7 states who submitted fake elector certifications to the National Archives in a brazen election fraud scheme to advance Trump’s plot to steal the 2020 election.

His followers shout “Earthalujah!” and “Change-a-lujah!” on the sidewalks. He started the show while locked down in NY, with death raining down on the skyscrapers. He likes to stop preaching suddenly and play music. In his show, The Fiery Eagles of Justice, a jazz trio that is hard to fathom, and The Stop Shopping Choir, a 35 voice chorus of trespassing activists – help The Rev slide into his next sermon. THE BRADCAST 1/27/22 (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: A grab bag of American corruption, autocracy and fascism. A new report ranking levels of corruption among 180 countries finds the US became more corrupt after the 2016 election, citing ‘persistent attacks against free and fair elections,’ corrupt campaign finance system, and other factors. The U.S. economy under President Biden is booming, growing 5.7 percent in 2021, the best calendar year growth since 1984, but good luck finding news about it due to lopsided corporate media coverage. Analysis shows the corporate media really do treat Democratic administrations more harshly than Republican administrations, gushing about economic data under Trump but dismissing identical economic data under Biden. Virginia’s rightwing Gov. Glenn Youngkin introduced a tip-line for parents to report to the state any teachers who teach students about racism or anything that parents find ‘uncomfortable’ or objectionable. The rising tide of Republican snowflakes seeking safe spaces has turned ominous in Tennessee, where a school board banned the Pulitzer-prize winning graphic novel MAUS, a true story about the Holocaust, from the school’s 8th grade curriculum. It’s unclear if the school board is aware of the irony of banning books that teach about the history and horrors of the book-banning Nazis. Corrupt rightwing disinformation outlet Gateway Pundit is the source of a completely fabricated story claiming that Wisconsin state lawmakers voted to decertify Joe Biden decisive 2020 win that was then spread widely across wingnut media outlets and Trump loyalists. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: New Cold War Same As The Old One (00:59:02)

A dangerous addiction to war is a result of what our guest retired Lt Col. William Astore calls victory disease. He actually served at the nuclear trigger under 2000 feet of granite. Reagan fired up the desire for conquest, but what the real new morning in America we need now is to be a normal country in normal times. Astore worries that our re-awakened cold war attitude is a serious threat to democracy at home. Peace is a frightening threat to the military-industrial-congressional complex. And for those who think peace is only for dreamy liberals, remember Trumps 2016 message of ending foreign entanglements resonated for a win.

Even though Brian Eno and David Graeber both had become internationally famous by 2014, the musician, visual artist and culture critic Brian Eno and the Professor of anthropology, author and co-founder of Occupy Wall street, David Graeber had not yet met in person. Yet barely a year after the Civil War ended, southern sources began claiming the conflict was about state’s rights. How did this revisionist history come about? Karen L. The 20th century, he wrote, is marked by three historic developments: the growth of democracy via the expansion of the franchise, the growth of corporations, and the growth of propaganda to protect corporations from democracy. Careys unique view of US history goes back to World War I and ends with the Reagan era. Noam Chomsky dedicated his book Manufacturing Consent to the memory of Alex Carey. Chomsky says that the Australian sociologist would have written the definitive history of propaganda in the US, had he lived to complete his work. This is a fairly complex production with many voices, historic sound clips, and source material. The program has been used by writers and students of history and propaganda. Alex Carey: Taking the Risk out of Democracy, Corporate Propaganda VS Freedom and Liberty with a foreword by Noam Chomsky was published by the University of Illinois Press in 1995.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 1/26/22 (00:53:34)

On the Show: The Department of Justice confirms the existence of an investigation into the failed fraudulent elector scam attempted by the 2020 Trump campaign. Fox news propagandist Tucker Carlson hosts fighter pilot Lt. Col. Scott Duncan, who claims that he is religiously opposed to the COVID vaccine, but not any other vaccines. Multiple cable television providers quietly drop right wing propaganda channel Newsmax from their channel lineup. Eric Trump and Alex Jones invoked their 5th Amendment rights hundreds of times during recent testimony to the January 6 committee, a jarring contrast to Donald Trump saying that only guilty people plead the 5th. Fox News propagandist Tucker Carlson nods as his deranged guest, Alex Berenson, says that COVID vaccines should be pulled and no longer given to anyone. Jordan Peterson resurfaces on Joe Rogan’s program, and his interview is indistinguishable from parody. Donald Trump declares himself the 45th and 47th President while out golfing, another signal that he plans to run for President in 2024. Tucker Carlson and Fox News go fully antisemitic with a new special about George Soros ruining America. Voicemail caller believes we are a bunch of socialist communist idiots.

THE CHILDREN’S HOUR: Back Off Bully! (00:58:00)

When we witness someone being bullied, sometimes we just want to tell them to “Back off, Bully!” But that’s not always easy, or a safe thing to do. On this edition of The Children’s Hour, we learn about bystander intervention with Hollaback educators. The Kids Crew find out what are the 5 D’s which give us tools to best respond when someone is being bullied. The Five D’s of bystander intervention are: Distract, Delegate, Document, Delay, and Direct. We explore each of these on the show, and Hollaback has created a series of videos for children ages 3 to 10 to explain the 5 Ds. There’s also bully bystander education available for teens and adults, in schools or the workplace. Find more resources at www.iHollaback.org This show is mixed with excellent music.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Iron Heel by Jack London Chapter 14 – 15 (00:27:28)

Part political novel, part dystopian fiction, part speculative fiction, The Iron Heel also includes historically factual footnotes making it a unique textual hybrid.

On the Show: David Fideler, writer, philosopher, and author of “Breakfast with Seneca: A Stoic Guide to the Art of Living,” joins David to talk Stoicism, philosophy, and more. Get the book: https://amzn.to/3tZsm3e

As tensions continue to rise between Vladimir Putin’s Russia and Ukraine, Joe Biden and other NATO allies consider deploying troops to the area. A grand jury in Georgia has been approved to hear evidence regarding possible criminality by Donald Trump in his attempts to coerce Georgia officials into giving him the 2020 Georgia election, despite Joe Biden having received more votes. Republican Newt Gingrich says that if Republicans win the House in the 2022 midterms, the members of Congress on the January 6 Trump riot committee will be jailed. Australian anti-vaxxers fabricate the death of a young boy, falsely attributing it to the COVID vaccine. After saying that she would get vaccinated only “over hear dead body,” Sarah Palin tests positive for COVID. Joe Biden calls Fox News reporter Peter Doocy a “stupid son of a b!tc&” during a public event, and later apologizes. CHARLE CHAPLIN: The Great Dictator speech (00:04:24)

One of the most important speeches in recorded history was given by Charlie Chaplin aka, the Silent Comedian. Please share this video and pass the message on. The Great Dictator [Oct 1940] Written, Produced, & Directed by Charlie Chaplin Use Captions for Translations. I found this comment as encouraging as the speech itself; its 100% spot on: “It’s quite amazing to hear this speech in 2012, and find no differentiations between the context of his speech and the real world. This movie is over 70 years old and not a shred of misinformation is given. Truly brilliant. They say that brilliant ideas and revelations are universal and forever, and this is? definitely one of them.” -DaveDooval

RADIO ART HOUR: Alessando Bosetti, John J.H. Phillips, The Weeknd (00:58:00)

This episode tunes in radio works of art from Alessando Bosetti, John J.H. Phillips, and pop star The Weeknd. First, “Children’s America” by Alessando Bosetti and introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow Karen Werner. Just after Barack Obamas inauguration in 2009, Allesandro Bosetti was invited by a German public radio station to produce a piece on the New America. About Children’s America Bosetti wrote that he decided to make the piece on my own terms, imagining a special kind of United States inhabited and run just by kids.” Read an interview with Bosetti about the piece here: https://www.thirdcoastfestival.org/article/alessandro-bosetti-bts – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2019/2020, Karen Werner. Next tune in “The Things One Has to Listen to…” by John J.H. Phillips In his novel The Unnamable, Samuel Beckett’s characters hear many intriguing sounds in the bleak landscape: “the sound of pierced air,” and “a little cry like a wounded wistiti,” to name just two. Occasionally he even describes the placement of sounds in space. Composed of acoustic and synthesized sounds etched into a background ambiance, The Things One Has to Listen to… is a tribute to Beckett’s vision in a world too busy to listen. Commissioned by New American Radio. And finally, we tune in two tracks from The Weeknd’s 2022 collaboration with producer Oneohtrix Point Never on the album “Dawn FM.” Here we hear the title track and the song “Out Of Time.”

ROBERT REICH: The Media Bias Nobody is Talking About (05:22)

Robert Reich breaks down how the mainstream media draws a false equivalence between the right and the left and misleads the public about what’s really at stake. Watch More: The Real Political Battle in America ►► https://youtu.be/hkM_NG6HkqY The mainstream media has historically tried to balance left and right in its political coverage, and present what it views as a reasonable center. That may sound good in theory. But the old politics no longer exists and the former labels “left” versus “right” are outdated. Today it’s democracy versus authoritarianism, voting rights versus white supremacy. There’s no reasonable center between these positions, no justifiable compromise. Equating them is misleading and dangerous. Don’t fall for it.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 1/24/22 (00:55:38)

On the Show: Defeat the Mandates rally in Washington DC is filled with dangerous and disgusting misinformation, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr saying that vaccine mandates are worse than the Holocaust because Anne Frank could hide in her attic. Attendees of the anti-vaccine Defeat the Mandates rally in Washington DC are interviewed, and it’s as bad as anyone could imagine. Republican Senator Joni Ernst is asked for three policy ideas that Republicans are currently for and she completely collapses, sputtering nonsense lacking meaning and substance. A new report exposes that Donald Trump’s former lawyer Rudy Giuliani was running a fake elector scam in seven states in an effort to steal the 2020 Presidential election from the actual winner, Joe Biden. Amelia Ruffner King, a Virginia mother, threatens a school board meeting with bringing loaded guns to school if the school enacts a mask mandate, and she was subsequently arrested and charged. Donald Trump is interviewed by Fox News propagandist Sean Hannity and it ends up being possibly Trump’s worst interview in history, touching on COVID, Ukraine, his dementia test, and much more. In a bizarre segment, Fox News propagandist Tucker Carlson complains that he no longer finds M&M’s as attractive based on how they are being redesigned, in a segment completely beyond parody. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, asked again whether he has received his COVID booster shot, refuses to answer. Voicemail caller asks David whether he’d prefer being in an elevator with an unvaccinated person or with someone smoking a cigarette.

THE BRADCAST 1/21/22 (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The National Archives has turned over documents to the House Jan. 6 Committee investigating the Capitol Insurrection and Donald Trump’s attempt to steal the 2020 election. One of those documents includes a stunning, never-issued draft Executive Order directing the Defense Department to seize the nation’s voting machines and appoint a Special Counsel to investigate baseless, evidence-free claims of hacking or manipulation – – a gambit for keeping the loser Trump in office. The draft is peppered with lies and factual errors, and includes false assertions from a legitimate, long-standing federal lawsuit challenging Georgia’s use of new, unverifiable computerized voting systems – – a case we have covered in-depth. Dr. Philip Stark of UC-Berkeley tells the ‘BradCast’ that while GA’s voting systems have documented vulnerabilities, ‘there is (so far) no evidence that they were exploited in 2020–contrary to the claims in the draft EO.’ The draft reveals just how close we came to an actual military coup ordered by Trump, and underscores how election security experts have warned for years that opaque electronic voting systems that prevent public oversight, even if they work perfectly, create an opportunity for cretins and liars like Team Trump to falsely claim they did not. HAROLD MEYERSON, longtime progressive columnist at The American Prospect, discusses how (and if) Joe Biden and Democrats can retrench, get their transformative Build Back Better agenda back on course despite obstructionists Lord Manchin and Lady Sinema, and save American democracy in the bargain. Plus: Shell Oil carbon capture and storage facility emits more greenhouse gasses than it captures.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 1/21/22 (00:58:00)

Part 1:
We talk with Scott Braddock, dean of the Austin Press Corps, about upcoming primary races in Texas. The governor, Abbott, is up for reelection, and has as his opponent, Beto O’Rourke. Abbott is being criticized for potential problems with the power grid, which have not been addressed since last year’s Great Freeze. Paxton, the AG, has been diagnosed with COVID.
Part 2:
WE talk with Robert Hockett, of Cornel University, and Bill Curry, former aide to Bill Clinton about how governable the US at present. Checks and balances no longer work, and the country is polarized. The filibuster exists to stop change, and advantages Republicans.
We also discuss the supply chain problems, which are reflecting higher in prices, and some shortages and inflation. However, if productivity grows, this would be counter inflationary.

SOJOURNER TRUTH: Project 1619 (00:57:58)

In August 2019, The New York Times published an interactive project titled 1619. The multimedia project was directed by reporter Nikole Hannah-Jones and featured contributions by writers, poets and photographers. The release of the 1619 project coincided with the 400th anniversary of what is said to be the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in the Virginia colony. Producers for the project pointed out that in order to understand white supremacy and systemic racism in the United States, you shouldn’t simply begin at the founding of the country in 1776. They argued that you should go back as far as 1619, when a Portuguese ship carrying 20 enslaved people from West Africa arrived on the shores of what is known today as Port Comfort, Virginia. This, of course, drew criticism from some on the right-wing, who dismissed the project as anti-american propaganda. However, the Washington, D.C. building that white supremacist in chief Donald Trump occupies today was built by enslaved Africans. Today, close to a year after the release of the 1619 project, a new and groundbreaking work of historiography compels us to look even farther back beyond 1619 to truly understand white supremacy and systemic racism in the United States.
Dr. Gerald Horne, a longtime guest and special friend of Sojourner Truth, has released a new book titled, The Dawning of the Apocalypse: The Roots of Slavery, White Supremacy, Settler Colonialism, and Capitalism in the Long Sixteenth Century. The apocalypse makes reference to the time period in which African and Indigenous people were enslaved, tortured and killed by the millions. In his book, Dr. Horne revisits the history of the 1500s, which is a century that is often overlooked when it comes to colonial history.

THE BRADCAST 1/20/22: Trump crime family’s very bad week; Senate GOP, Manchin, Sinema vote to undermine American democracy (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: This week will be viewed by history as shameful for fifty Republican and two Democratic senators, who all voted to undermine voting rights and American democracy. After a year of Kabuki drama, played out for their benefit, obstructionist Democratic Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema joined American history’s hall of shame in siding with segregationists, anti-democracy activists and Republican authoritarians in the U.S. Senate to block critical legislation to defend voting rights and American democracy. Despite claiming to support the Freedom to Vote: John Lewis Act, the two ensured it would not pass by embracing the Senate’s undemocratic filibuster rule. Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and other Democrats vowed to keep coming back ‘again and again and again’ until the job of saving American democracy is won. Thanks to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling, the bipartisan U.S. House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol Insurrection and Donald Trump’s attempt to steal the 2020 election is now receiving Trump White House documents that the disgraced former president fought to keep secret. The committee on Thursday requested the voluntary testimony of Trump’s eldest daughter and former White House adviser Ivanka Trump. Fulton County (Atlanta) District Attorney Fanni Willis has requested a special grand jury in her probe of the apparent criminal conspiracy by Trump and others to unlawfully threaten and intimidate state election officials into reversing Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory in Georgia. KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: Why Americans Buy So Much Stuff (00:59:41)

A consumer’s republic was born at the end of the second world war. And though it was genuinely intended to be a tide lifting all boats, it has increased economic inequality and created isolation where public space once was central. On this show Harvard history professor and author Lizabeth Cohen talks about her book on the undermining of the public sector and the politics of mass consumption. The Consumer’s Republic came from top down, now she says change must come from the bottom up.

The Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN (00:59:30)

Segment One: Our first guest is Daniel Weiner of the Brennan Center. We talk about the Freedom to Vote Act, and its provisions. We also discuss the filibuster problem: everything before the Senate now requires 60, rather than a majority to pass. This was never intended by the framers of the Constitution.
Segment Two: Then we catch up with Paul Glastris, editor in chief of Washington Monthly. We discuss the problem of inflation in the US and elsewhere. We should be looking at the monopolists who are driving up prices, rather than blaming government policies. There are grotesque inefficiencies in monopolies, and this is a long term problem, and will require long term solutions.

Our guest today is Celia Ouellette, a human rights lawyer and CEO of the nonprofit Responsible Business Initiative for Justice. Within the scope of her organization’s campaigns, we take a critical look at the American prison industrial complex and private prisons, the ineffectiveness of the death penalty, and the draconian practice of locking juveniles up for life.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Iron Heel by Jack London – Chapter 10 – 11 (00:33:47)
Part political novel, part dystopian fiction, part speculative fiction, The Iron Heel also includes historically factual footnotes making it a unique textual hybrid.

OUTCASTING: Using religion to discriminate (00:29:00)

There have been lawsuits about bakers and florists who don’t want to provide cakes or flowers for same sex weddings, saying that if they did, it would amount to complicity, participation, and even endorsement of something against their religious beliefs. Does this argument hold water? How are the courts viewing this issue, and is the composition of the Supreme Court changing the analysis? On this edition of OutCasting, we look at the difference between religious belief, religiously motivated behavior, and the golden rule.

Dr. Raul Pino, the Florida Department of Health Medical Director, has been placed on leave for encouraging his own staff to get vaccinated. The Supreme Court has rejected Donald Trump’s request to block the release of White House records related to the January 6 Trump riots to the House committee investigating January 6. Notable discussions from the David Pakman Show subreddit, including about schools being forced to close due to COVID, the funding of television networks, and Trump rally attendees. Unvaccinated Czech singer Hana Horak deliberately got herself infected with COVID, and has died of COVID. Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asks what might be the worst question in all of journalism during President Joe Biden’s nearly 2-hour press conference. Donald Trump is wildly triggered by Joe Biden’s nearly 2-hour press conference, appearing with right wing radio host Mark Levin to lodge endless complaints and whine insufferably. Voicemail caller asks whether waiting until the US becomes a dictatorship before leaving the country is a bad idea because it may become difficult to leave a dictatorship.

Veganuary and Acterra’s Plantiful New Year devote every January to supporting people in adopting more plant forward diets. These group challenges are remarkably effective. Current levels of meat and dairy consumption are incompatible with a stable climate, yet many who understand this still find it difficult to change our diets. DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 1/18/22 (00:56:16)

What Republicans increasingly refer to as “freedom” is actually a very dark authoritarian vision for the country. Multiple Trump rioters, including Elmer Stewart Rhodes, the founder and leader of the right wing Oath Keepers, are charged with seditious conspiracy for their role in the January 6, 2021 riots in Washington DC. Donald Trump officially restarts rallies for the 2022 election with one in Florence, Arizona, riddled with lies and continued insanity. Interviews with attendees of the latest Donald Trump rally in Florence, Arizona reveal a very disturbed group of people. DirecTV will be removing right-wing conspiracy channel OAN. MyPillow founder and CEO Mike Lindell’s bank, Heartland Financial, is closing his account for fear of “reputational damage.” Voicemail caller suggests David go back to his own f-ing country because he will never understand what’s going on in the United States.

THE BRADCAST 1/14/22 (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The fight to preserve democracy now continues on a state-by-state, court case-by-court case level. Congressional Democratic leadership will bring up two crucial voting rights bills next week, putting all senators on record so voters can attempt to hold them accountable. The bills will likely fail, unable to overcome a GOP filibuster, thanks to the two obstructionist Democratic Senators Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) who refuse to defend voting rights and free and fair elections. In Wisconsin, a Republican circuit court judge has suddenly decided that the state’s secure ballot drop boxes and other longtime secure methods of absentee voting are unlawful, despite years of use. Ohio’s state Supreme Court struck down new redistricting maps that egregiously violate a voter-approved state law requiring that maps reflect the general partisan makeup of the evenly divided state, but Republicans drew maps giving themselves a 12-3 advantage. MARCY WHEELER, independent investigative national security journalist at Emptywheel.net, explains the serious new charges of ‘seditious conspiracy’ against Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes and ten of his henchmen for their roles in the Jan. 6 Capitol Insurrection, which was key to Donald Trump’s effort to steal the 2020 election. Wheeler discusses what the new charges mean as the Dept. of Justice moves up the chain of command in their investigation of the insurrection. Also today: 150 former EPA officials urge Virginia’s Dem-controlled state senate to reject Republican Gov.-elect Glenn Youngkin’s nomination of Trump EPA chief Andrew Wheeler for the state’s top environmental post.

The show features a 10 minute natural news segment and reports from the activist world by Church director Savitri D.

VOX: How Southern socialites rewrote Civil War history (00:06:55)

The United Daughters of the Confederacy was a significant leader of the “Lost Cause,” an intellectual movement that revised history to look more favorably on the South after the American Civil War. They were women from elite antebellum families that used their social and political clout to fundraise and pressure local governments to erect monuments that memorialized Confederate heroes. They also formed textbook review committees that monitored what Southern schoolchildren learned about the war. Their influential work with children created a lasting memory of the Confederate cause, and those generations grew up to be the segregationists of the Jim Crow Era in the South.

SOJOURNER TRUTH 1/14/22 Round Table (00:57:33)

Welcome to our first round table of 2022. The drift towards fascism/ authoritarianism in the US? Focusing on two fronts: Denying the right to vote and/or accepting the results of the vote. The rise of racist and fascist militias including in the military and law enforcement, as well as real concerns of another attempted coup: can the lid be kept on or is Pandoras box too wide open. The charges of sedition will those charged remain low hanging fruit?
The latest from SCOTUS on the pandemic, any winners or losers here? On international front: Tensions on the rise: Russia, US, China. Does the establishment need a little war or is that a bridge to far? Climate change? Remember that? Your thoughts as we move into 2022.

THE BRADCAST 1/13/22: SCOTUS blocks OSHA from protecting workers amid pandemic; Oath Keeper charged with ‘seditious conspiracy’ (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The Republicans’ stolen and packed U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Biden Administration’s test-or-vaccinate mandate for large employers, while narrowly approving a vaccine mandate for healthcare workers. The ruling comes amid a surge of the Omicron variant that is causing hospitalizations and deaths to spike to new record levels. The Los Angeles County Health Director warned the public to avoid non-essential public gatherings for a few more weeks until the current wave peaks to ease pressure on overwhelmed hospitals, citing hopeful data suggesting the COVID wave may quickly subside. But the non-medical experts in the rightwing majority on the U.S. Supreme Court seem dead set on preventing actual experts charged with protecting workers from doing so. The absurd ruling was countered by a scathing and furious dissent from the court’s three liberal justices, who noted the rightwing majority is unelected and accountable to no one, and derided their rightwing colleagues for asserting their non-expert medical opinion over the actual experts in the Executive Branch agency that Congress mandated, by explicit statue, to protect Americans in the workplace. Three of the court’s rightwingers also advanced a discredited legal theory, the ‘major questions’ doctrine, which seeks to strip federal agencies of the authority to regulate when there is a ‘major question’ — an ominous sign for an upcoming challenge to EPA regulations next month. Also today: the founder and leader of the far-right Oath Keepers militia and ten others were charged with ‘seditious conspiracy’ for their role in the Trump-incited Jan. 6 Capitol Insurrection. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: Josh Hawley and the Republican Obsession with Masculinity (00:59:31)

He voted against one thing that can actually address what he says is the problem. Where once men felt pride in what they contributed to family and community as sole breadwinners, that is gone. The anxiety is real. In her New York Times essay, guest Liza Featherstone takes on Hawley’s myths. Nostalgia for a mythical order seems to calm the fear many feel in a changing world. Where there is greater freedom for all genders to be who they are, many straight men feel insecurity. Right wing senator Josh Hawley is using this for political gain, when his solution is just a myth. FDR brought new pride to the men in things like the Civilian Conservation Corps and Bidens Build Back Better would do the same. What can progressives do? Lots.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 1/15/22 (00:59:30)

Segment One – We talk with Barbara Hofer, Prof. Emerita, MIddlebury College, and Gale M. Sinatra, USC. We discuss how people seem to want to be oblivious to the dangers of the climate crisis, and how they choose to distrust science. People want 100% in all climate disaster warnings, and do not understand that science is evidence based, and there is no 100% certainty.
Segment Two – We talk with Twila Moon, lead scientist, National Snow and Ice Data Center about the melting of the polar regions. The temperature changes in the Arctic cause extreme weather events elsewhere. In addition, the thawing of permafrost is releasing CO2, Methane, and other gases into the atmosphere. Native peoples are actively trying to adapt, but dependence on fossil fuels is too great.

In this podcast, my guest, Lad Mandiola shares timely life lessons on how he was able to keep pressing on through some of life’s difficult challenges.

TUC RADIO: Alex Carey – Corporations and Propaganda, part 2 (00:29:00)

Alex Carey wrote that the people of the US have been subjected to an unparalleled, expensive, 3/4 century long propaganda effort designed to expand corporate rights by undermining democracy and destroying the unions.

This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to Bob Berwyn of Inside Climate News to learn what this fire that destroyed over one thousand homes reveals to us about the new normal.

Once citizens believe a nation is “a republic but not a democracy”, then its easier for a strongman to limit majority-rule voting so only the right people get to vote– or have their vote counted. But can Biden and the Democrats prevent Republicans from rigging the game?

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Iron Heel by Jack London – Chapter 4 – 5 (00:48:55)

Published in 1908, this is a novel about a socialist revolution that was crushed for years by an oligarchy of wealth before ultimately reviving and building a more just and compassionate world. Part political novel, part dystopian fiction, part speculative fiction, The Iron Heel also includes historically factual footnotes making it a unique textual hybrid.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 1/13/22 (00:54:56)

On the Show: Scilla Alecci, reporter with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, coordinating the organization’s partners in Asian and Western Europe, joins David to discuss the blockbuster Pandora Papers. The Ohio Supreme Court has ordered the heavily gerrymandered congressional district maps be thrown out, and fair districts redrawn. Arizona Republican State Senator Jake Hoffman runs away from reporter questions about why he signed a fraudulent and phone elector document claiming that Donald Trump won the state of Arizona in the 2020 Presidential election. An opinion column in the Los Angeles Times by Michael Hiltzik argues that mocking the deaths from COVID of the unvaccinated is ghoulish, but necessary. Donald Trump is interviewed on radical right wing propaganda channel OAN and crushes the host’s anti-vaccine questions with actual facts. Tucker Carlson allows Glenn Beck, currently suffering from COVID, to spread a widely debunked COVID internment camp conspiracy theory. Josh Zepps explains to Joe Rogan that his belief about the COVID vaccine and myocarditis is wrong, and Rogan simply moves the goalposts. Right wing propagandist Candace Owens wildly claims, absent any evidence, that comedian and actor Bob Saget died from the COVID vaccine. Voicemail caller asks about the “reality” of COVID hospitalizations in the past compared to now in the midst of the Omicron variant.

RADIO ART HOUR: “Voiceage” by Julia Loktev (00:58:00)

“Voiceage” by Julia Loktev, is featured today, introduced by Wave Farm Radio Art Fellow Andy Stuhl. Voiceage was produced in 1990 by Loktev, who would go on to become an internationally acclaimed filmmaker. At the turn of the nineties, though, Loktev was a student at McGill University and the host of a radio show called Curiouser and Curiousear on campus-community station CKUT. Loktevs show gave her a platform to produce experimental audio productions that hovered between documentary and scripted work. For Voiceage, Loktev visited nursing homes around Montreal with a tape recorder. She cut, spliced, and manipulated these tapes along with music and other samples to shape a reflection on aging as a sonic process. Loktev later said of the piece, I was interested in memory, music and how age wears on the voice ” we talk about the face but rarely the voice ” and theres a little snippet in the piece that includes an older Bette Davis in dialogue with her younger self. Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2021/2022, Andy Stuhl.

ROBERT REICH: The Media Bias Nobody is Talking About (05:22)

Watch More: The Real Political Battle in America ►► https://youtu.be/hkM_NG6HkqY The mainstream media has historically tried to balance left and right in its political coverage, and present what it views as a reasonable center. That may sound good in theory. But the old politics no longer exists and the former labels “left” versus “right” are outdated. Today it’s democracy versus authoritarianism, voting rights versus white supremacy. There’s no reasonable center between these positions, no justifiable compromise. Equating them is misleading and dangerous. Don’t fall for it.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 1/10/22 (00:55:27)

On the Show: One year after the January 6 Trump riots, the coup fears are only bigger, with recent op-eds from Jimmy Carter and Noam Chomsky, as well as warnings from retired generals and many others. Despite claims to the contrary about their “treatment,” 2/3 of Trump rioters so far are getting lighter sentences than those recommended by the prosecution. Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has tested positive for COVID after her trip to Florida which was made controversial by Republicans. Donald Trump, after being highly triggered by Joe Biden’s January 6 speech, completely fell apart during a softball interview from right wing propaganda network OAN. Senator Ted Cruz is humiliated on live television by Fox News propagandist Tucker Carlson, having to apologize for how he referred to the January 6 rioters. An accused Trump rioter out on bail killed a young mom while drunk driving, an incredible contrast to the similar stories that Republicans tell about undocumented immigrants out on bail. Anti-vaccine COVID conspiracy podcaster Doug Kuzma has died of COVID. Q-Anon lunatic Cirsten Weldon, who recently said that only “idiots” get vaccinated against COVID, has died of COVID. The Eggman calls in to explain what it’s like working with colleagues who are racist.

THE BRADCAST 1/7/22: Dr. Nils Gilman on protecting American democracy from re-emerging ‘demons of hell’ (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The three white men who murdered 25-year old black jogger Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia have been sentenced to life in prison. In Arizona, the buffoonish, rightwing conspiracy con-men calling themselves ‘Cyber Ninjas’ have shut down their company after a state judge fined them $50,000 a day for refusing to hand over public documents regarding their pretend ‘audit’ of Maricopa County’s 2020 presidential election. Former President Jimmy Carter warned in a NYT op-ed that he now fears for the survival of our democracy, citing the January 6 insurrection and Republican politicians who have ‘leveraged the distrust they have created to enact laws that empower partisan legislatures to intervene in election processes,’ warning that ‘strongman politicians’ threaten to ‘collapse the foundations of our security and democracy with breathtaking speed,’ and much more. Ronald Reagan’s U.S. Solicitor General, Charles Fried, warns that he now sees rising in the U.S. the same ‘demons of hell’ that destroyed democracy in his birth country, Czechoslovakia. DR. NILS GILMAN of the Berggruen Institute discusses his L.A. Times op-ed warning about ‘the runaway train of illiberalism’ that is now bearing down on American democracy, and that ‘the need to act could not be more urgent’. Gilman details specific actions that ordinary citizens who oppose such fascist takeovers of our democracy can and must do now at the state and local level to counter such forces, before the 2022 midterm elections and the 2024 Presidential election. Gratitude is a powerful thing — a physical, practical part of being a revolutionary for the Earth. Reverend Billy is the self appointed pastor of The Church of Stop Shopping, a radical performance community and action group based in New York City. Although his church has tens of thousands of members, Billy is a preacher with an unknown god. He is not Christian, but wears a priest’s collar and televangelist’s hair. The show features a 10 minute natural news segment and reports from the activist world by Church director Savitri D.

THE BRADCAST 1/6/22: Biden decries ‘dagger at throat of our democracy’, ‘lies…spread for profit and power’ on Jan. 6 anniversary (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Today the nation marked a grim first anniversary of Donald Trump’s deadly, failed attempt to steal the 2020 election. In special coverage of the January 6, 2021 insurrection and attack on the U.S. Capitol by the supporters of defeated, disgraced former President Donald Trump, we discuss some difficult realities in the ongoing fight to save American democracy. Trump’s attempted coup might have failed on January 6, but his evidence-free lies have succeeded in duping nearly 80 percent of Republicans into refusing to accept Joe Biden’s decisive victory in the 2020 election. Authoritarianism and Fascism have had far greater success over the centuries because Democracy is much harder, requiring truth, facts, transparency, public oversight and public participation in its defense. In remarks today from the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, Vice President Kamala Harris and President Biden both underscored the importance of federal legislation to restore voting rights and prevent the GOP’s new schemes to subvert elections and overthrow democracy itself. Biden forcefully called out the failed former president for his ‘web of lies’ in blistering remarks, accusing Trump and his supporters of holding a ‘dagger at the throat of democracy’ in an ‘armed insurrection.’ Biden said, ‘We are in a battle for the soul of America,’ calling on ‘We the People to stand for the rule of law, to preserve the flame of democracy, to keep the promise of America alive.’ Make no mistake about it: we are living at an inflection point in history. Plus: a bit of light on a solemn day from National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman, with her spoken word poem, ‘New Day’s Lyric.’

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: News Media: Commodity or Public Good? (00:58:54)

Distrust of the press is hardly a new phenomenon. In the 1920s two American literary luminaries shared a concern about bias in the press. But they offered widely divergent reasons and ways to correct the unfairness. Upton Sinclair insisted the concentrated ownership was to blame while Walter Lippmann argued that human nature is responsible for press inadequacies. Are owners of newspapers just like other bosses? Is the news just another commodity? What about untethered social media today? What will it take to address media bias? Our guest on this show is Maia Silber, author of an article in Psyche magazine titled What History Tells Us About the Dangers of Media Ownership, and she is optimistic.

ROBERT REICH: What if We Actually Taxed the Rich? (00:06:02)

Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich breaks down seven ways to tax the rich and raise trillions in revenue. Watch More: 12 Myths About Taxing the Rich ►►https://youtu.be/pnoLAMHwf2I Income and wealth are now more concentrated at the top than at any time over the last 80 years, and our unjust tax system is a big reason why. The tax code is rigged for the rich, enabling a handful of wealthy individuals to exert undue influence over our economy and democracy. Conservatives fret about budget deficits. Well, then, to pay for what the nation needs — ending poverty, universal health care, infrastructure, reversing climate change, investing in communities, and so much more — the super-wealthy have to pay their fair share. Together, these seven ways of taxing the rich would generate more than $6 trillion over 10 years — enough to tackle the great needs of the nation. As inequality has exploded, our unjust tax system has allowed the richest Americans to hoard wealth, at the expense of the rest of us. It’s not radical to rein in this irresponsibility. It’s radical to let it continue.

ECONOMIC UPDATE: Working Class History and the 2020 Election [REPEAT] (00:29:00)

This special program discusses how the history of the US working class shaped US politics. We start with how and why the 1930s Great Depression married the US working class to FDR’s Democratic Party (New Deal Coalition). We next show how and why after 1945, US business leaders and Republicans broke up that marriage to undo the New Deal. By re-building working class divisions – especially around race and gender – males and whites moved toward the GOP. A weakened Dem party responded by appealing to (and thereby dividing) business interests to support them. The two parties thus became almost identically pro-capitalist and both presided over growing inequalities in income, wealth and political power between the richest 10% and the working class. Building to 2016, working class disgust with both parties showed in disinterest, ambivalence, and the growing role of “cultural” differences in place of working class solidarity. It boiled over when an “outsider” (Trump) defeated first the Republican and then the Democratic establishment candidates, an expression of the working class’s history since 1929. We end on the implications of this history for the 2020 election.

Our guest on this show is Maia Silber, author of an article in Psyche magazine titled What History Tells Us About the Dangers of Media Ownership, and she is optimistic.

The Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 1/1/22 (00:58:45)

We chat with Lincoln Mitchell, Stephen Pimpare, and Davitd Atkins. In part on we discuss the death of Desmond Tutu and how democracy can survive in the US, given how state legislatures have changed recently, and are now dominated by right wing ideologues.
Segment Two:
In our second segment we discuss the concept of “dignity of work” and how this has shaped social policy. Rather, we should focus on the dignity of humans, not only defined as workers.
