THIS WAY OUT #1866: Australia’s 5th Marriage Equality Anniversary  (00:28:59)

AUSTRALIAs first gay and lesbian legally married couples are celebrating their fifth anniversaries in January 2024. Of course, the march down the politically-fraught aisle was long and hard. The conservative agenda of Prime Minister John Howards Liberal Party saw making the civil institution explicitly heterosexual as a priority, and passed an amendment to the Marriage Act in 2004. Over the next thirteen years, 22 attempts to overturn that law in Parliament failed, while public support for marriage equality grew. Still, the administration of then-Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull opted for a non-compulsory, non-binding mail-in postal vote on the issue. The turning point came in August of 2017. Thats when This Way Out SYDNEY correspondent BARRY McKAY picks up the story.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Call of the Wild – Jack London ch. 2 (00:21:11)

Jack London’s classic novel Call of the Wild is about a dog named Buck. Buck is living a happy life in California until he is sold to pay a gambling debt. Taken to the Klondike to become a sled dog, Buck must toughen up and learn the harsher rules of survival in the North. One of the first of these is how to deal with being harnessed in the same team as a dog that wants to kill him. Large, strong and smart, Buck toughens to his new life. But even the toughest dog can be worn down by constant work, and after 3,000 miles of pulling sleds, Buck nears the end of his rope. Cast away as no longer useful, Buck is acquired by greenhorns whose inexperience nearly kills him, but after being saved by John Thornton, he at last finds a man he can love. Then on a remote gold-hunting expedition, Buck hears a call emanating from the woods and speaking to the wild heart of his distant ancestors. The lure of it almost balances the great love he bears for Thornton, but events take him away from his old life… and into legend. (summary by Mark F. Smith)

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: ScholarCHIPS: Curiosity with Social Entrepreneur Yasmine Arrington Brooks (00:28:00)

“When [you] keep asking questions and seeking answers, eventually you may realize you’re an answer — you could potentially be the answer to a problem or a challenge.” ~ Yasmine Arrington Brooks Yasmine Arrington Brooks was a teenager when she realized she could be the potential answer to a challenge. The child of incarcerated parents, with a passion for making things happen, she founded ScholarCHIPS and hasn’t looked back since. ScholarCHIPS provides college scholarships, mentoring, mental health supports, and a peer support network to college-bound young adults who have incarcerated parents, inspiring them to complete their college education. I’ve been a Yazzie fan for a long time and I wondered: what would she say about how curiosity contributes to the work of social entrepreneurship? “I rarely take things at face value.” ~ Yasmine Arrington Brooks

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 1/3/24 (00:56:58)

On the Show: Michael Fanone, former Capitol Police officer who was injured while defending the Capitol on January 6, 2021, and author of the book “Hold the Line: The Insurrection and One Cop’s Battle for America’s Soul,” joins David to discuss what took place on the day of the Trump riots. Get the book: https://amzn.to/48iqKCF

Infamous anti-gay Kentucky County Clerk Kim Clark suffers a final humiliation and is ordered to pay a $260,000 fine. Independent 2024 presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr hires a top anti-vaccine extremist, Del Bigtree, as his communications director. Failed former President Donald Trump posts a PDF claiming to be the “proof” of the 2020 presidential election being stolen. Unable to continue arguing that the Biden economy is terrible, Republicans shift to claiming that the economy is only good because the Federal Reserve “rigged” it for Joe Biden. Growing concerns about Donald Trump’s cognitive state make news after a strange video of Trump’s posture on New Year’s Eve brings up the specific concern of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Sean Hannity simultaneously argues that President Joe Biden is suffering from advanced dementia and that he is also the leader of a wide-ranging crime syndicate. Absolutely painful cringe at a recent Vivek Ramaswamy campaign event. Voicemail caller, furious with David, tells him he is wrong about his “pronoun thing.”

When we give birth, it is generally with the help of a midwife or a doctor who has been through the process before and knows what to do and what to say to ease us through what is, after all, a natural process. So why is it not the same with death? In the not-so-long-ago past, death was a community affair. Friends and relatives would take charge of the process, assisting the dying, helping those that would be left behind ” explaining the process, washing the body, arranging for the remains. THE BRADCAST  12/29/2023 Encore: 2024’s Chance for Democracy’s Renewal (00:58:00)

Original airdate 12-19-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: Late-breaking news out of Colorado, where the state’s highest court barred disgraced former president and insurrectionist Donald Trump from the 2024 ballot, citing the U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment. Good news for voting rights out of the extremely conservative 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, with rulings that require Louisiana to draw fair, non-racist U.S. House maps before the 2024 election, and upholding that voters and private organizations have a private right to sue under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. Civil rights groups sue to stop Texas’ authoritarian GOP Gov. Greg Abbott’s new state law granting authority to state police to arrest anyone suspected of being an undocumented immigrant. The very conservative 11th Circuit rejected former top Trump aide Mark Meadows’ latest motion in a ruling that dismantles Trump’s immunity claims. A compelling new essay delves into disturbing recent polls on the 2024 presidential election and explains why ‘pro-democracy Americans [should] approach the 2024 election with enthusiasm, not only dread.’ Florida student delivers a brilliant call for the resignation of the far-right co-founder of Moms For Liberty from the school board. Happy New Year Everyone

Segment One

We begin the show with Robert Hockett, lawyer and professor at Cornell. We discuss the US debt ceiling and what President Biden should do in the face of Republican intransigence. We also discuss the deposit insurance problem.

Segment Two

We then talk to Robert Hennelly, reporter and activist. First we talk about the state of health care in the US. We spend more on ‘healthcare’ than any industrialized nation, and have the worst outcomes of all. Many people (200+ day) are still dying from Covid, maternal mortality is high, while most people are not insured or underinsured. We also have medical bankruptcies which has introduced Venture Capitalists, who are quickly taking over many medical services, with an increasingly detrimental effect.

THE BRADCAST 12/28/2023: John Nichols of ‘The Nation’ cited by Trump as Jan. 6 conspirator! (00:57:00)

Original airdate 12-11-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: Accountability is underway for Trump and his henchmen — but also for progressive author and journalist John Nichols?! Disgraced former president Donald Trump’s best chance to avoid criminal prosecution before the 2024 Election is to delay court proceedings. To bypass those delays, Special Counsel Jack Smith asked the U.S. Supreme Court to expedite Trump’s appeal of a court ruling declaring he does not have immunity from prosecution for crimes committed while in office. In court filings in the federal Jan. 6 case over Trump’s efforts to steal the 2020 election, his attorneys bizarrely target progressive Wisconsin journalist and author JOHN NICHOLS of The Nation as a provocateur. Nichols explains the bizarre Trump filing, why it’s completely bonkers, and its broader implications. Also today: Trump chickened out and refused to testify in his New York fraud trial. The civil defamation trial of Rudy Giuliani got underway on Monday to determine financial damages Giuliani must pay for defaming and lying about two Georgia election workers.

WINGS #38-23 Indian Boarding Schools (00:28:59)

US Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, the first Native American US cabinet secretary, set in motion an investigation into the history of federal boarding schools that were used to strip away native cultures from indigenous children. The state of Colorado followed up this initiative by funding a one-year research project into the boarding schools in their state. The project was headed by State Archaeologist Holly Norton. It covered the years 1880-1920, and consisted primarily of documents research. The cutoff date of 1920 was chosen to preserve the privacy of victims of the schools beyond that date. Among the findings were allegations of sexual abuse, starvation, diseases, and economic exploitation. Jerilyn DeCoteau, attorney and co-founder of the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition, commended the research work and the sensitivity. She talked about the founding of the healing coalition and their plans. They have received a grant to begin collecting oral histories. She says each person and community must decide whether to pursue such a project. She cites language revitalization as the most important healing tool.

ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Midlife Mastery: Navigating Frustration to Find Fulfillment and Gratitude (00:30:00)

On this show we are tackling midlife challenges as we navigate through frustration to find fulfillment and gratitude. Whether you’re in a season of discontent, full-out frustration, or downright crisis, there is something in here for you. Crisis sounds so fatal but lets start with a definition so were all on the same page: Crisis is a time of intense difficulty, trouble, or danger. Nothing is broken here but rather a chance to get to know yourself better as you learn what’s working and what isn’t. If life’s plan is to evolve yourself as a human being on a journey of self-discovery, then a snag or two along the way seems more than reasonable. Our brain, the powerful engine in partnership with our heart can sometimes get out of alignment. With self-awareness and a commitment to weather the storm, you can adopt new ideas and strategies to help you over the hump or humps.

WHEN THE BIOMASS HITS THE WIND TURBINE # 122: Electrify Everything (00:29:19)

How can we reach a world where energy generation is carbon free? One solution being proposed is to electrify everything. First it must be understood that electricity currently only accounts for about 1/3 or all the energy we use – the rest is used in transportation (oil products) and industry (primarily natural gas). So this two-step solution envisions an electrical grid composed of renewable generation – and all energy, for buildings, vehicles and industry – powered by this renewable grid. Join Annie and Jay Warmke of Blue Rock Station for a discussion of this vision – what are its goals and are those goal achievable?

Today, Lia Kohl introduces a work from Claire Williams and Julien Poidevin; and Tom Roe features 2023 radio art from Polish artist Jeff Gburek. And tune in Julian Hoff’s “Chants Migratoires.” The main feature today is “Oscillations” created by Claire Williams and Julien Poidevin (2021), and introduced by Lia Kohl. “Oscillations” is a live sonic performance for radio that uses our Ethernet lines and communicating machines as a canal to interact with the electromagnetic waves and vibrations that surround us. Sound is used to modulate space and time as machines, antennas, radios, microphones and bodies to stream these ethereal vibrations taken from different locations on the earth and from our atmosphere in real time. Sonifying the electromagnetic activity of the sun, meteors and radio echoes coming through the atmosphere, the activity of tweaks and spherics oscillating in the ionosphere, or tuning in the local radio station: these are some of the electromagnetic waves that Oscillations uses to propel us on an immersive journey into the invisible. – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Art Fellow 2023, Lia Kohl. And tune in for 2023 songs from Jeff Gburek’s “The Radio And the Sea” and “Still Life With a Question Mark” albums. And Julian Hoff’s “Chants Migratoires,” from the “Deep Wireless 9” CD from New Adventures in Sound Art.

TUC RADIO: Alex Carey – Corporations and Propaganda, parts 1&2 (00:58:00)

Alex Carey wrote that the people of the US have been subjected to an unparalleled, expensive, 3/4 century long propaganda effort designed to expand corporate rights by undermining democracy and destroying the unions. The 20th century, he wrote, is marked by three historic developments: the growth of democracy via the expansion of the franchise, the growth of corporations, and the growth of propaganda to protect corporations from democracy. Careys unique view of US history goes back to World War I and ends with the Reagan era. Noam Chomsky dedicated his book Manufacturing Consent to the memory of Alex Carey. Chomsky says that the Australian sociologist would have written the definitive history of propaganda in the US, had he lived to complete his work. This is a fairly complex production with many voices, historic sound clips, and source material. The program has been used by writers and students of history and propaganda. Alex Carey: Taking the Risk out of Democracy, Corporate Propaganda VS Freedom and Liberty with a foreword by Noam Chomsky was published by the University of Illinois Press in 1995.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 5/20/23 (00:00:00)

Segment One

We begin with Scott Braddock, editor of the Quorum Report. We discuss Texas, and how Republicans are trending over time in Texas. With Trump at the top of the ticket, Republicans have actually been trending down. This election (2024) will be the first election after the Dobbs decision. As a result, Texas has implemented draconian anti-abortion laws, and has deputized anyone to police their observance. In addition, Texas has a “show your papers” law that authorizes local law enforcement to demand citizenship proofs. This directly challenges the federal government’s role in enforcing immigration laws.

Segment Two

We then talk with Robert Hockett and Bill Curry. We discuss the mood of voters. Fear seems to be the predominant emotion. Trump promises to be a ‘benevolent dictator’ despite his vows to get even with all who opposed him. Biden’s response has been weak.

When I found this conversation and decided to re-broadcast I was intrigued by Simon Michaux’s rare expertise in mining – and by the premise that we can’t go green without going small. Our fossil fueled economy is destabilizing the planet. But a renewable economy as it is designed now makes unsustainable demands on minerals and materials of the earth. Simon Michaux is an associate professor at the geological survey of Finland. He is a problem solver in the mining industry and now the industrial recycling industry. Most of his current scientific papers deal with the tasks to completely phase out fossil fuels in Finland. But perhaps we should look a little closer. This week on Sea Change Radio, we are speaking with Lauren Kim, an evangelical Christian and recent college graduate, who volunteers for an organization called YECA – Young Evangelical Christians for Climate Action. We talk about the mission of her organization, learn about a faith-based form of environmentalism known as “creation care,” and discuss a new generation of evangelicals converting their brethren to help protect the planet.

LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: Debt, Democracy & Disarray: Astra Taylor on The Age of Insecurity   (00:28:00)

Can we turn our insecurity into power? Consumer debt stands at $17.29 trillion and many Americans are drowning in debt, with the average household owning over $100 thousand. The climate crisis, threats to democracy, and global wars add more worry to our already stressful lives. In her new book out from House of Anansi Press, The Age of Insecurity: Coming Together as Things Fall Apart, writer, filmmaker, organizer, and the 2023 Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Massey Lecturer, Astra Taylor uses mythology. psychology and the history of capitalism to break down the different kinds of insecurities we face, and explore how our insecurities help capitalism flourish. Without it, the system would cease to function, she says. In her years of work as Co-Founder of the Debt Collective, which emerged from Occupy Wall Street, Taylor has used debt as a tool for bringing people together and organizing. She is the author of The Age of Insecurity: Coming Together as Things Fall Apart, Democracy May Not Exist But We’ll Miss It When It is Gone, and The People’s Platform (winner of the American Book Award), and the director of What Is Democracy?, among other books and films. In this wide-ranging discussion, Astra Taylor and Laura Flanders discuss the history of capitalism, the rights of debtors, and what we can do to lessen insecurity and expand security both as individuals and as a society. All that, plus a commentary from Laura.

WINGS #38-23 Indian Boarding School (00:28:59)

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Storytelling: A Curious Tale, with Ronald Young, Jr. (00:28:00)

What is it about stories that capture our attention and bridge distances? And what role might curiosity play, for the teller of tales as well as those who are listening? Award-winning storyteller and podcaster Ronald Young, Jr. has some thoughts… We explore how others’ curiosity helps us tell our own stories and that good stories — the ones that really captivate us — draw on all the dimensions of human curiosity. “I think through the narrative: Did I answer those questions to begin with? Was there a better way that I could answer those questions? Was there a way I could be more articulate in a way that they don’t have those questions anymore? I think that’s where curiosity helps to build the story.” ~ Ronald Young, Jr.

ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Beyond the Banter: Elevating Small Talk to Transformative Connections   (00:30:00)

On this show we are going beyond the banter as we dive deeper into conversations elevating small talk into transformative connections. Always looking for something interesting to say that doesn’t involve the weather, the state of the union, or the latest child’s milestone? You may not be alone. Social media keeps us somewhat connected on what’s new or the cracked window we are willing to open when it comes to our personal lives. But how can we create more meaningful relationships if we can’t find opportunities to open up? A chance meeting in the grocery store or in line at an event isn’t the right environment to go deeper so we may need to carve out the time and encourage thoughtful communication.

LITERATURE ALOUD: Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) by Harriet Beecher Stowe ch.45 (00:24:27)

Among the most banned books in the United States, Uncle Tom’s Cabin or, Life Among the Lowly is a novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe which treats slavery as a central theme. Stowe was a Connecticut-born teacher at the Hartford Female Academy and an active abolitionist. The novel is believed to have had a profound effect on the North’s view of slavery. In fact, when he met Harriet Beecher Stowe, President Lincoln is said to have commented, “So you’re the little lady whose book started the Civil War.” First published on March 20, 1852, the story focuses on the tale of Uncle Tom, a long-suffering black slave, the central character around whose life the other characters—both fellow slaves and slave owners—revolve. The novel depicts the harsh reality of slavery while also showing that Christian love and faith can overcome even something as evil as enslavement of fellow human beings. RADIO ART HOUR: Jesse Kudler, Graham Stephenson; Derek Bailey (00:58:00)

Tune in today for radio art works released in 2022 from Jesse Kudler and Graham Stephenson and also English avant-garde guitarist Derek Bailey. First, Stephenson plays amplified trumpet, and Kudler performs on guitar, radios, transmitters, tapes, and electronics on the “Apposite Rejoinder” album, and we tune in to the “Liquid Assets” track here. Then we hear from Bailey, who died in 2005, but in the 1990s enjoyed playing along with jungle pirate radio stations. On the album’s liner notes, Bailey says, “So I’ve been listening to it, and I really like the way they do it on the radio – I have to say that in recent times it seems to have got softer, a lot less abrasive in some ways. There are more vocal samples, for example… But what I like about the radio is the live quality – although the stuff is records, they don’t leave them alone – they’ll talk over them, advertise gigs, order a pizza – the music’s constant but with interruptions. It’s very live – and with that sustained pace, which of course is inhuman… And it’s nice to play along with, particularly as opposed to free jazz situations where the pace is often very slow. I’ve found it fantastic to practice with. So for a long time I’ve been doing that… I’ve always liked the parts where the music stops and drifts along – you get some ridiculous string orchestra, then it just slips a bit, the pitch goes or they slow it down or something. Then the drums come back – it’s completely meaningless! I like that… What is a pain and can sometimes dilute it is the repetitive – looped or sampled – vocals… The funny thing is, I’ve never heard a jungle record, all I’ve heard has been off the radio….”

A dangerously impaired Roseanne Barr stuns a Turning Point crowd into silence during a recent Charlie Kirk event. Failed former President Donald Trump mentally collapses during a rally in Durham, New Hampshire. The average rally-going Trump supporter is getting much worse, as evidenced by interviews from the recent rally in Durham, New Hampshire. Cultists pray for Donald Trump at his rally in Durham, New Hampshire, claiming Trump is God’s chosen one. Alina Habba, Donald Trump’s lawyer, promises to go “deep and hard” on Democrats next year. THE BRADCAST 12/15/2023 Encore: Election expert Kevin Skoglund on major failure of Northampton County, PA touchscreen voting system) (00:57:00)

Original airdate 12-4-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: We have a doozy of a story on the mind-boggling failure of touchscreen voting systems in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. In last month’s election, machines made by ES+S printed ballots registering the OPPOSITE of what voters had selected on the touchscreens. But the machine only flipped the votes on the human-readable portion of the ballot, not the barcodes also printed on the ballot — which humans cannot read but is used for tabulation — causing chaos on Election Day. Election technology expert KEVIN SKOGLUND, of Pennsylvania’s non-profit Citizens for Better Elections, investigated, and explains his new report detailing the simple programming error that caused so much chaos. Skoglund discusses the disturbing security implications of such errors, including potential use by malicious actors to sow doubt about election results, what officials must do to solve such failures in the 2024 election, and much more. Other voting system security experts call in to share their expertise on this disturbing voting system failure. Also today: a boatload of news headlines.

EARTH RIOT RADIO:Historic Huge Peace Marches Vs. Relentless Doublespeak (00:29:00)

In this week’s Earth Riot Radio and our live stage show Sundays the 10th and 17th, (LiveStreamed at https://www.youtube.com/JoespubNY , we explore the intimidating challenge of Making Peace in 2023.

Peace is Life. Peace is the Earth. Peace is forests, wetlands, high plains, and coral reefs – ecosystems that live in steady balance, changing but flourishing over time. Human culture works that way, too. A healthy neighborhood (and a big Peace March) has diversity rather than a monoculture, lots of first names everyone knows, and people keep an eye on the predators to stay safe. Now we must enter a time of radical change, and the Earth is showing the way.

THE BRADCAST 12/14/2023 ‘Beginning of the End’ for Fossil Fuels; ‘The End’ for Rudy Giuliani (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The last-minute, final agreement at the COP28 U.N. climate conference called for a ‘transition away from fossil fuels,’ for the first time ever, and finally operationalized the long-sought ‘loss and damage’ fund, among many other provisions. We delve into the details of the good and the bad in the flawed but useful plan to deal with human-caused climate change. Disgraced Donald Trump lied again to his supporters about gas prices, and promised to renege on U.S. international climate commitments. Trump’s legal woes ratchet up in his federal criminal trial and two state civil trials. In the Georgia civil defamation suit against Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, 2020 election worker Ruby Freeman testified to how the litany of lies shamelessly spread by Giuliani has destroyed her and her daughter’s lives. Giuliani’s attorney claimed that Giuliani may ultimately be bankrupted by the GA defamation lawsuit, two other defamation lawsuits, and separate criminal charges for his role in the plot to steal the 2020 election in Georgia. LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: Power Grids Under Attack: The Threat is Domestic Terrorism ” Not Drag Artists (00:28:00)

On December 3, 2022, an attack on two electrical substations in Moore County, North Carolina left 45,000 households and businesses without power for up to five days. It was the biggest domestic terrorist attack on the electricity grid in U.S. history, but one year later, no arrests have been made and authorities have named no suspects other than to say that whoever did this knew what they were doing. In this installment of The Laura Flanders Shows investigation into the local roots of the January 6 insurrection in one state, North Carolina, Laura speaks with the North Carolinians who were at a drag show in Moore County when the lights went out. Downtown Divas had been harassed for months by anti-LGBTQ leaders ” did the sabotage attack have anything to do with that harassment or the drag performance scheduled that night? As legislators and local leaders continue to roll back LGBTQ rights, they remain largely silent about the real threats facing North Carolinians and the nation from domestic terrorists with their sights set on U.S. power grids. Why? This episode also looks at how the LGBTQ community in North Carolina is standing up to hate and creating safety ” with Drag operatics ” for all.

LITERATURE ALOUD: Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) by Harriet Beecher Stowe ch.42 (00:15:01)

Attendees of Donald Trump’s Iowa rally are interviewed, and it’s difficult to assess their state as anything short of deranged. ALAN WATTS:Alan Watts Opens Up About Religion (00:17:54)

This summarised lecture by Alan Watts is from the Alan Watts Library at https://alanwatts.org. The image of Jesus is owned by the church traditions and authorities. He has been moulded to fit the interests of the church patriarchs for centuries, so much so that the prevailing image of Jesus is now so far removed from what he truly represented. Namely an energy from the future who came to earth to bring illumination and knowledge to humanity. The reason why the Jesus/Jeshua personality came to earth was to create an opening or doorway to a different state of consciousness. He wanted to set an example of the possibilities that are available to each human being. He wanted to hold up a mirror to human beings and remind them of their own divine origin and the dormant potentials they carried within. The potentials for peace, freedom and mastership over oneself. CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Why Neuroscience Matters, with Ilya Monosov (00:28:00)

Ilya Monosov, Ph.D., invites us to rethink our understanding of the brain — and to wrestle with the implications of how we define “curiosity”. Still, I didn’t anticipate our conversation would take us to the importance of neuroscience and information seeking for the fate of humanity, or to how achieving an “engineer’s understanding” of the brain could be helpful for those living with mental health challenges like OCD. “The driving principle is really to get a mechanistic understanding of cognition at the lowest level possible…but the way to get there is through a large amount of exploration. And partly that’s because, I think at this moment, we don’t really know how the brain works.” ~ Ilya Monosov

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 12/13/23 (00:56:14)

Fox News hosts continue to admit there is no actual evidence against Joe Biden for impeachment or indictment, but does it matter anymore? Republican Senator Ron Johnson implodes when asked for evidence of 2020 election voter fraud by CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins. 2024 Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis holds a CNN town hall which reminds everyone why he is losing. In the latest humiliating move, failed former President Donald Trump is offering pieces of his used clothing to those who purchase his “digital trading cards.” An analysis finds that Donald Trump lied every 12 seconds during a 5-minute portion of his recent Fox News town hall with propagandist Sean Hannity. Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson says that God told him he would be a Moses-like figure, a claim indicative of mental illness by all normal standards. Fox News host Bret Baier confronts MAGA Mike Johnson with his own prior statements about impeachment when the target was Donald Trump. RADIO ART HOUR: Diamanda Gals, Melody Sumner Carnahan, Laetitia Sonami, Marie Goyette  (00:57:21)

Two works this week from the New American Radio archives this week. Melody Sumner Carnahan with Laetitia Sonami and Marie Goyette contribute “Manananggal” and Diamanda Gals adds “Schrei 27.” Carnahan’s story is about two powerful women who come under each other’s influence, thereby releasing unconscious contents. Each begins to see the other as evil, bringing to life a type of vampire “a woman who can cut her body in half”the once-metaphorical beast known in Philippine folklore as “the manananggal.” During the unraveling of their history, the two women again draw close, the leitmotif of each is firmly underscored as she projects onto the other woman emotions and elemental forces she has repressed in herself. Originally commissioned for stage by STEIM in Amsterdam. Commissioned by New American Radio. Then, Diamanda Gals and her “Schrei 27.” It consists of several short performances over the space of twenty-seven minutes alternating extreme high-energy vocal work with absolute silence. The performances are chapters of a confession which might have been induced through a chemical or mechanical manipulation of the brain. There is a high density of speech-sound over time which is often machine-like in its velocity. The work employs the atypical speech and vocal signal processing that Gals has been researching since 1979. A co-commission of the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis) and New American Radio.

TED TALK: Lessons from a Cult Survivor (00:08:36)

Claire Ashman was born, raised, and birthed 9 children in a cult. She shares how the prevalence of cults and cult-like thinking affects everyday people. In Australia there are over 3000 cults, with some 600,000 members, meaning we all know, or have had contact with at least one person who is a member of a cult. Cults and secretive groups fill certain voids that all people feel at some point in their lives. Everyone has had a time in their lives when they’ve felt vulnerable or directionless. For some people, it’s easier to have someone give you the answer than living through the pain. Ashman shares awakening for cult-member’s friends, colleagues and family members to recognize the signs and be present to support upon exiting a cult. Ashman is now happily married, of her own free will, to a supportive raising their 10 kids together. THE BRADCAST 12/8/2023 Encore: Federal Appeals Court Guts Voting Rights Act, with ACLU’s Jonathan Topaz (00:58:00)

Original airdate 11-27-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: A three-judge panel on the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeal issued a mind-blowing decision last week gutting what remains of the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965. The court upheld a lower court ruling declaring, for the first time in U.S. history, that individual voters and private organizations like the NAACP and ACLU have no ‘right to private action’ to sue against violations of Section 2 of the landmark Voting Rights Act, despite decades of rulings on that basis. JONATHAN TOPAZ of the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project explains their original lawsuit challenging Arkansas’ racially-discriminatory voting maps, the ‘radical’ ruling and what it means for voting rights in Arkansas and the nation, and next steps. Also today: Israel and Hamas agreed to extend their four-day pause in hostilities to allow for the release of more hostages from Gaza. A white male suspect was arrested in the shooting of three college students of Palestinian descent in Vermont. Listeners weigh in.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN December 9, 2023 (00:59:30)

Segment One & Two

This week’s Best of the Attitude features our friend Lincoln Mitchell for the whole hour. We talk about the ongoing violence by the Israeli Military Force upon the Palestinian civilian population. The US Governments unwavering support of Israel while vetoing Nato efforts to order a ceasefire places countless more lives at risk. Meanwhile rhetoric here at home is fomenting more anti-semitism & anti-Islam aggression. On Dec. 5, the U.S. House passed HR 894, which states that anti-Zionism is antisemitism. On the same day, House Republicans charged the presidents of Harvard, Penn and MIT with institutional cultures that foster [antisemitism] because you have faculty and students who hate Jews, hate Israel and are comfortable apologizing for terror. As Noah Zatz recently observed, both claims rely on a logical leap that requires conflating the Israeli state with its Jewish residents in conjunction with metaphors of destruction. Building on Zatzs analysis, we interrogate the claim that anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism. Even recognizing that some criticism targeting Israel can be antisemitic, the now-bipartisan

claim that anti-Zionism equals anti-Semitism raises at least three serious concerns:

1) It is analytically fraught;

2) It is potentially dangerous for Jews and others (in part because it foments social division and feeds white supremacist ideologies like great replacement theory) and;

3) It is a predictable and strategic effort to silence dissent and discredit antiracist movements in the United States and beyond and abroad.

Nguyen Tran is a Virginia born, culturally confused Vietnamese American son of Vietnam War refugees who settled in Dallas, TX. There, he worked at a dot.com before the first internet bubble burst. THE BRADCAST: 12/7/2023 (Special coverage: Analysis of the 4th GOP Presidential Primary Debate (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Special coverage of the GOP 2024 primary debate, where once again, front-runner Donald Trump was absent. The four remaining eligible candidates who showed up were former UN Ambassador and former SC Gov. Nikki Haley; FL Gov. Ron DeSantis; former NJ Gov. Chris Christie; and scammy business dude and intensely obnoxious conspiracy theorist Vivek Ramaswamy. Joining us for analysis, context and snark are our tireless 2024 post-debate panelists and long-time OG bloggers: HEATHER DIGBY PARTON of Salon and Hullabaloo and ‘DRIFTGLASS’ of ‘The Professional Left Podcast’. It was a lively, if insane, affair that highlighted the brokenness of today’s Republican Party. The candidates raucously attacked each other, while Christie stood up for actual old-school ‘conservative’ values and finally took on Trump head on, underscoring the threat that Trump poses to his party and the nation.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN December 8, 2023 (00:58:00)

Part 1:

We talk with Scott Braddock, editor of the Quorum Report.

In Texas, young voters are being discouraged, and legislated against for voting. There is no drive-through voting for disabled voters. The school voucher program that Gov. Abbott has been pushing failed in the Texas legislature, despite Abbott’s push. Abbott appears to be auditioning for the VP slot with Trump.

Part 2:

We talk with Laura Jedeed, reporter on the right wing, and Bill Curry, former White House aide.

Trump claims that he would be only a “dictator for one day”. The Republican “debate” included only Christie, Haley, Ramswamy, and DeSantis. Christie asked the most pointed questions about Trump, while the others did not engage this issue. The general tenor of the debate was that is was essentially pointless, since Trump is presumed the nominee. Trump will not debate.

LITERATURE ALOUD: Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) by Harriet Beecher Stowe ch.38 (00:25:06)

RADIO ART HOUR: Jasmina Al-Qaisi  (00:58:00)

“Homoniememorimorph” by Jasmina Al-Qaisi, introduced by Jos Alejandro Rivera, is featured today. Originally performed in 2020 for Anybody out there?! (100 Days of Radio in Germany) at D21 Artspace in Leipzig, Germany, Homoniememorimorph was a live radio experiment using auto-archival methods crafted on the go. Jasmina Al-Qaisi describes the radio action, of which she has excerpted and edited, as an ongoing text writing method with, and for voice, where she re-writes her memory by crossing bridges between words. “Homonimemoriorph,” an invented word of a longer series of invented words by the artist, sonically and visually resembles other words. It is a manifestation of misspelled speaking, and a practice of Al-Qaisi as a poet, artist and radio maker. In the piece, she says the invented word is used to define the words that I feel fit together, and that stands for me, being here taking over talking over the radio; trying to re-order my memoriesto envision some sort of agency on what our memory is. “Homonimemoriorph” casts a wide net which allows Al-Qaisis words to create and pass through multiple forms and meanings depending on what associations the listener makes. The improvised nature of the piece often results in overtly confessional moments that transform ordinary approaches to what is considered useful or important information. The first public instance of this project was streamed over internet radio, and broadcast on Radio Corax 95.9 FM and UKW 87.5; the latter, covering the vicinity of D21 Artspace. Due to an un-planned delay in her headphones, Al-Qaisi’s voice, thinking, and as a result, the conversation with herself, was forced to slow down. Navigating this live radio time stretch, she spoke while sitting before a table of tiny, misplaced objects she gathered over the span of 15 years. They included scrap papers of invented words and poems, stones, shells, and pieces of metal items. As Al-Qaisi reflected on these objects, she re-wrote the importance they seemed to hold for her, and combined these new histories with samples of YouTube glitches that included insect, animal, and planet sounds, and samples of her friends attempting to pronounce homonimemorimorph.

The novel depicts the harsh reality of slavery while also showing that Christian love and faith can overcome even something as evil as enslavement of fellow human beings. ALAN WATTS: Conquering Fear (00:14:32)

Conquering Fear by Alan Watts. Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was a British writer and lecturer who interpreted and popularized Eastern philosophy and religion for a Western audience. Watts wrote more than 25 books and articles on subjects important to Eastern and Western religion, introducing the then-burgeoning youth culture to The Way of Zen (1957), one of the first bestselling books on Buddhism. In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), Watts proposed that Buddhism could be thought of as a form of psychotherapy and not a religion. He considered Nature, Man, and Woman (1958) to be, “from a literary point of view—the best book I have ever written.” He also explored human consciousness and psychedelics in the essay “The New Alchemy” (1958) and in the book The Joyous Cosmology (1962).

THE BRADCAST 12/1/2023 Encore: High Stakes Voting System Trial begins in GA, with guest: Plaintiff Marilyn Marks3 (00:58:00)

Original airdate 11-16-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: A high stakes voting system trial is set to begin in Georgia that has critical implications for the nation and the 2024 election. The long-awaited ‘Curling v. Raffensperger’ voting system trial seeks to force Georgia ditch its costly, unverifiable and insecure touchscreen voting system statewide, and switch to verifiable hand-marked paper ballots at all polling places. The case spawned a landmark expert cybersecurity report that identified so many critical vulnerabilities in the system that the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency issued an advisory recommending that all jurisdictions using the same equipment to immediately apply security patches. But Georgia’s Republican Sec. of State Brad Raffensperger said he won’t apply those security patches until after the 2024 election. The same Dominion-made voting system is also at the center of the statewide voting system software breach in Coffee County, GA, by MAGA Republican operatives. Plaintiff MARILYN MARKS, election expert and Executive Director of the non-profit group, Coalition for Good Governance, explains the latest developments in the lawsuit, and the stakes for the state and the nation. Also today: New developments in the Fulton County election theft RICO trial, including the attorney who confessed to leaking sensitive pre-trial proffer videos – – but is he really the source? EARTH RIOT RADIO: They Stopped the Bombing So We Would Go Shopping (00:29:00)

Our Earth-Killing system veils the connection between Consumerism and Militarism, a fundamental connection.

But this current war doesn’t pass the common sense test for most Consumers. Controlling our sense of right and wrong is a primary goal of the Consumerist project. Marketers are holding their breath as the war in the Mideast and the Ukraine feature murders of innocents in the broad daylight of the media. Looking into the eyes of freshly bombed children these last weeks threatens to break Consumerism’s hold. Nothing is worse for people, and nothing is worse for the Earth.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN December 2, 2023 (00:59:30)

Segment One

We begin with Alex Sammon, reporter at Slate. We discuss the presidential campaign, and how Koch has thrown his support to Nikki Haley, not DeSantis. DeSantis is starving for national attention, and has arranged to debate Newsom. Should Biden drop out, other democratic governors are available. We also talk about APAC, who has supported election deniers, and who are now attacking the group of BIPOC House Reps nicknamed, The Squad.

Segment Two

We then talk with Retired, Major General, Dennis Laich, and Retired Colonel, Lawrence Wilkerson. We discuss the problems that the US armed forces are having with recruitment, and agree that the volunteer armed forces are not viable or sustainable. Fewer people want to serve, and this a sign of civic rot. They have a proposal for a way to fill in forces: a lottery, applying to all, for the shortfall every year. The General and Colonel both agree that, (APAC) is the most dangerous and insidious foreign agent operating in the US, using money and influence to shape policy.”

THE BRADCAST 11/30/2023: Biden EPA Gets the Lead Out, and Other Examples of ‘Exactly What the Government Should be Doing’ (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: We have an unusually large amount of somewhat encouraging environment-related news on today’s ‘BradCast’. We apologize in advance. More than 40 inches of snow fell in the Northeast, which may/may not be (though probably is) related to climate change. A New York state appeals court has reinstated the very narrow gag order on Donald Trump, blocking his unprecedented attacks on court staff. OPEC announced new production cuts into 2024, in hopes of manipulating flagging oil/gas prices in an election year, as US oil production hits record highs under the Biden Administration. The Biden EPA announced very big news – proposing new drinking water standards that will result in replacing all 9 million of the nation’s lead water pipes to protect America’s children. The Biden Interior Dept. released $468 million in new funding to advance wildfire resilience. President Biden traveled to a wind energy manufacturing plant to tout his administration’s wildly successful, multifaceted jobs-and-manufacturing agenda that has resulted in a clean energy jobs and manufacturing boom across the country, and criticized Republicans who voted against it all but are trying to claim credit for the benefits in their districts. KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: From 2016: Israel Conflates Religion with Nationalism (00:59:46)

The unquestioned backing by Jewish Americans for the State of Israel started to fade about ten years ago, well before the current war. This keepingdemocracyalive is from 2016, in which Allan C. Brownfield reveals the relatively short shelf life of Zionism among Jewish Americans: before 1948, it was condemned by most Jewish leaders as a turning away from the real meaning of Judaism and instead buying into the nationalism that got us the first world war. To put it mildly, since October 7th, its been a divisive discussion, but it is exceedingly important to recognize Judaism is not Zionism.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN December 1, 2023 (00:58:00)

Part 1:

We talk with Harvey Kronberg, publisher of the Quorum Report.

We discuss the infighting happening in Texas, among the Republicans. The school voucher program that the governor was pushing has not passed the Texas legislature. He is threatening to set up special sessions until they pass it. The Lt. Gov. is fighting with the Atty. General, and other members of the administration are fighting with each other. Medicine is criminalized due to the abortion restrictions. Homeowners insurance and utility bills have risen dramatically, due to climate disasters, similar to Florida.

Part 2:

We talk with Bill Curry, politician and lawyer, and with Ryan Cooper, managing editor of the American Prospect.

We note that Henry Kissinger has died.

We discuss how many secrets the US government has that is does not share with the citizens.

TUC RADIO: The Colonial Urge to Make Money out of the Climate Crisis, Part 2 of 2 (00:29:00)

This is a report from the webinar held on October 26 by the Indigenous Climate Action. Panelists from Hoopa Valley, Bear Clan, Sandia Pueblo and Yuchi presented their in-depth research into false solution to the climate crisis. By now there is agreement that the burning of fossil fuels is the major cause of global heating. In spite of 28 years of annual meetings of the UN Climate Change Conferences heating has increased. In July, 2023, the global average temperature was the highest on record. And the IMF, the International Monetary Fund, announced in August 2023 that Fossil Fuel Subsidies surged to a record $7 Trillion. In response members of the European Parliament now call for an end to all subsidies for fossil fuel globally by 2025. They will bring this demand to the COP28 that will meet in Dubai from November 30 to December 12, 2023. The problem might be that COP28 will be held in one the worlds most lucrative oil producing regions. And Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, who has been appointed to preside over the COP28, is the managing director and group CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).

LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: Prison Creative Arts Project: Imagination in the Face of Incarceration   (00:28:00)

What difference can art make for people in prison? The state of Michigan spends $48,000 per prisoner every year ” with little to no money going towards funding for prison education, art and rehabilitation programs. The Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) is an independent program of the University of Michigan that supports formerly incarcerated artists, facilitates creative arts workshops and even hosts an annual exhibition to showcase incarcerated artist’s work. PCAP was founded by William Buzz Alexander, the late husband of Janie Paul, the curator of PCAP and author of the book based on the project: Making Art in Prison: Survival and Resistance, out now via Hat and Beard Press. As you’ll hear in the program, the work of PCAP has built a vibrant community of artists inside and outside prison walls. Joining us for this conversation are Janie Paul and artist Yusef Qualls, known as Q. He was released from prison five months ago after being sentenced to life as a minor and serving 28 years. Danny Valentine is a formerly incarcerated artist also featured in the book, who credits PCAP for saving his life. What can incarcerated artists teach us about why humans make art and the power it holds? All that, plus a commentary from Laura on poets imagining Gaza.
