ALAN WATTS: Alan Watts Opens Up About Religion (00:17:54)
The image of Jesus is owned by the church traditions and authorities. He has been moulded to fit the interests of the church patriarchs for centuries, so much so that the prevailing image of Jesus is now so far removed from what he truly represented. Namely an energy from the future who came to earth to bring illumination and knowledge to humanity. The reason why the Jesus/Jeshua personality came to earth was to create an opening or doorway to a different state of consciousness. He wanted to set an example of the possibilities that are available to each human being. He wanted to hold up a mirror to human beings and remind them of their own divine origin and the dormant potentials they carried within. The potentials for peace, freedom and mastership over oneself. “Speech extract from “Jesus: His Religion” by Alan Watts, courtesy of https://alanwatts.org” This summarised lecture by Alan Watts is from the Alan Watts Library at https://alanwatts.org.

ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Can You Really Be Self-Made? (00:30:09)
On this show we are humbly taking a step back, widening our purview to assess our support system as we question, can you really be self-made? The pure definition of self-made says: made such by one’s own actions. especially: having achieved success or prominence through one’s own efforts. But what about all the people who told you it was possible? The people who poured encouragement into your soul, helped you back up when things didn’t go as expected, and rallied behind all the many modifications and extra attempts? Not to take anything away from the choices you’ve made, in fact, let’s celebrate them and inspire you to take more chances and trust in your own abilities. But let’s not forget those who had your back, took your hand, challenged your ideas, and forced you to be better.

Donald Trump Jr and radical Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene are furious that they weren’t allowed into the post-debate “spin room” at the first Republican presidential debate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. According to Ronan Farrow’s latest piece about Elon Musk, associates close to Musk blame drug use for Musk’s increasingly erratic behavior. Rudy Giuliani, Donald Trump’s former attorney, is arrested and booked in Fulton County, Georgia. Rudy Giuliani makes unhinged and absurd post-arrest statements outside of Fulton County jail. The Eggman calls into to argue that compared to Ron DeSantis, Mike Pence came off as likeable and charismatic at the first 2024 Republican presidential primary debate.

Conquering Fear by Alan Watts. Watts wrote more than 25 books and articles on subjects important to Eastern and Western religion, introducing the then-burgeoning youth culture to The Way of Zen (1957), one of the first bestselling books on Buddhism. In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), Watts proposed that Buddhism could be thought of as a form of psychotherapy and not a religion. He considered Nature, Man, and Woman (1958) to be, “from a literary point of view—the best book I have ever written.” He also explored human consciousness and psychedelics in the essay “The New Alchemy” (1958) and in the book The Joyous Cosmology (1962).

LITERATURE ALOUD: Looking Backward 2000-1887 by Edward Bellamy ch. 19-21 (00:35:58)

The novel predicts the radio, the credit card and big box stores as the characters discuss the problems and illogic of dog-eat-dog capitalism and the superior culture of a society focused on the benefit of all rather than the enrichment of a few.
CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: How to Change the World (00:28:00)
Central Falls High School teacher Seth Kolker wrote: “The goal for our course on ‘How to Change the World’ is simple and bold: by the end of the year, each student will have a working theory of how they want to change the world. “All year, we’re going to meet inspiring student activists, lawyers, non-profit leaders, community volunteers, and elected officials who are working to make local change happen. And in April, we’ll travel to Washington, DC for a week-long trip students are planning themselves.” And so they did. It was, in a word, amazing.
I talked with the students about how curiosity just might help change the world.

Also can you imagine how Republicans would respond if a Democrat had shot a store owner for having a Trump flag out front? It would be the top story on every right wing website for two solid week… Corporate Democrats are almost as corrupt and hypocritical as Republicans – Golden Blasted for ‘Tantrum’ Attacking Student Borrowers After Taking Sallie Mae Donation. THE BRADCAST 8/18/23: Former AL Gov. Don Siegelman on GOP defying SCOTUS order on racial gerrymandering (00:58:00)
Encore: original airdate 7-24-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: It’s increasingly clear that the 2024 election is shaping up to be a battle between democracy and autocracy. Democrats largely represent pro-democracy forces. The Republican Party is clearly on the side of autocracy, at all levels of government. The Missouri state supreme court ordered the Republican state attorney general to stop blocking a voter initiative codifying reproductive rights into law. Ohio’s GOP-controlled state legislature is trying to change election rules to block a voter initiative preserving reproductive rights. In Alabama, the Republican state legislature is openly defying a US Supreme Court ruling ordering them to add a second Black majority U.S. House district under the Voting Rights Act. Yet Alabama Republicans raced to execute a prisoner after the US Supreme Court didn’t intervene. Alabama’s former Gov. DON SIEGELMAN (D) explains Alabama’s racist Jim Crow past and present, and solutions to reforming the state’s racially discriminatory justice system and death penalty regime. Siegelman also covers potential remedies – – including jail time — for Alabama Republicans’ stunning defiance of the US Supreme Court ruling to stop suppressing the voting power of the state’s Black population.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 8/19/23 (00:59:30)
Segment One
We begin with Robert Spitzer, Professor Emeritus, SUNY Cortland, about historic regulations of guns in the US. Since the 1600s, laws restricting gun ownership, use, and display have been regulated, despite what recent SCOTUS rulings have assumed. What is happening now is ‘popular constitutionalism’, a way of reinterpreting the Constitution that is contrary to the real intent.
Segment Two
We then talk with Amy Littlefield, reporter for The Nation. We discuss the Moms for Liberty group, which is very active, despite its relative short life. They claim to be about education, but their goal seems to be mainly to distract voters from the authoritarian tendencies of the far right. They want to dismantle the Dept. of Education, attack transgender children, manipulate media, etc. They are funded by dark money from the far right.

THE BRADCAST 8/17/23: Autocracy on Parade in NC and TX; Democracy Striking Back in WI (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: Hurricane Hilary in the Pacific Ocean is making an ‘exceedingly rare’ beeline for the Southwestern U.S., bringing equally rare August rain and potential flash floods. In North Carolina, the extremely-gerrymandered Republican-controlled state legislature over-rode vetoes by Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper to ram through unspeakably cruel laws targeting transgender children, inserting GOP Big Government between doctors and patients, and overruling parents’ rights. Speaking of autocracy, gerrymanders and Big Government Republicans who dictate to small, local government and voters — the Texas State Supreme Court has reinstated a new law allowing the GOP-controlled Texas state legislature to oust the chief election official in Harris County (Houston), just weeks before municipal elections, dumping the monumental task of running elections in the state’s largest and most Democratic-leaning jurisdiction to the inexperienced county tax assessor. In Wisconsin, new petitions filed with the state supreme court seek to force the creation of new, fair legislative maps for the state’s extremely gerrymandered House and Senate for the first time in more than a decade, and new emergency elections next year for ALL members of the state Senate, who are currently occupying seats due only to the GOP’s unlawful partisan gerrymanders. SEA CHANGE RADIO: Following the Money: Alex Kotch on Charitable Giving (00:29:00)
They say charity is a virtue, but sometimes it’s a little more complicated. The donor advised fund or DAF, has been a financial instrument for charitable giving in the United States for nearly a century ” it’s a useful tool for wealthy individuals to make philanthropic donations. But as the inequality gap continues to expand in this country, the DAF has come under increased scrutiny as people push for transparency within the moneyed class. In 2018 the New York Times published a piece asserting that donor advised funds are being exploited by high net worth individuals as a way to shelter them from capital gains taxes. And more recently, this week’s guest on Sea Change Radio, Alex Kotch, wrote a piece for Optout and The New Republic examining the role of DAF fiduciary sponsors, particularly big investment firms like Fidelity, Vanguard, and Schwab. We discuss this article, learn more about DAFs, and explore the question of who should be held accountable when a donor advised fund facilitates donations to red-flagged hate groups

He says the Confederates and the January 6th are the inheritors of the original intent; to move forward to the nation we can become, its really time to leave that behind.
LITERATURE ALOUD: Looking Backward 2000-1887 by Edward Bellamy preface & ch.13-14 (00:30:44)
Published in 1888, this short novel focuses on the education of a wealthy man from 1887 who, amidst the labor struggles and wealth inequalities of The Gilded Age, experiences a “Mesmeric sleep” until the year 2000 when he is awakened to see an America transformed by the gradual, non-violent evolution from primitive capitalist exploitation to an advanced cooperative socialism. The novel predicts the radio, the credit card and big box stores as the characters discuss the problems and illogic of dog-eat-dog capitalism and the superior culture of a society focused on the benefit of all rather than the enrichment of a few.

ALAN WATTS: Stop Feeling Lost by Doing This (00:15:17)
If there is one simple question that bothers us all as human beings, it is: Why are we living? It is a burden on our shoulders, and we cannot think about it without going depressed or becoming sad, because simply we can’t answer it. We got blocked. In this lecture, Alan Watts talks about the game of life, how the answer of that question is: To play. To simply not take it seriously, to stay within the flow of life without having to be very strict and rigid about it. We have to take it as if it was a game. Because if we take it seriously, we will be forced to think scientifically, to predict the future, and be aware that any false move, would lead us to a fatal death, which is not the case.

We examine solidarity on the right and far right and how the organizational efforts of these folks often shape outcomes for the rest of us.

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Fearlessly Curious Conversations in Dangerously Divided Times, with Monica Guzman (00:28:00)
“Curiosity applied to the political divide is, I think, the most critical skill we need today.” ~ Monica Guzman
“I Never Thought of It That Way: How to Have Fearlessly Curious Conversations in Dangerously Divided Times” is as encouraging a book as I can imagine. It is a curiosity guidebook par excellence, chock full of tips and tricks and a potent reminder that, as author Monica Guzman puts it, “understanding the people who confound us is always, always worth it.” Monica Guzman, founder of Reclaim Curiosity, is senior fellow for public practice at Braver Angels. She dedicates her days — and, as best I can tell, most of her nights and weekends as well — to helping the rest of us strengthen our curiosity muscle so we can, together, build trust and salvage our democracy. An important, uplifting conversation that will leave you feeling better about what is possible. “Really perceptive questions — especially when they come on a bed of trust or relationship — can reveal so much that is so needed. They can help people feel like someone cares about them, is interested in them. So curiosity about other perspectives is a very warming, welcoming kind of thing.” ~ Monica Guzman

ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Why the Bad Stuff is Easier to Remember (00:29:28)
On this show we are taking time to sift and separate our thoughts and memories to understand, why the bad stuff is easier to remember. You could be having a stellar day, everything is going right, one to write down and remember forever and then you hit a snag. A challenge that might take a little effort and derails you for a moment but the shift is immediate. This day stinks! You’ll never guess what happened to me today! The negative event becomes the marque of our day and the traumatic event becomes the marque of our memories. We revisit it often, protect it fiercely, and even reform it, chiseling away some of the details until it becomes our identity. But what happened to all the good? Where are the mental videos of all the celebrations, high-fives, and proud moments? It’s time to remove the topsoil of shame and let the light shine on all our accomplishments.

This week tune in radio works from Negativland, Iru Ekpunobi, and Chris Brookes, and radio songs from Elvis Costello and Mercury Rev open and close the show, respectively. Those songs are “High Fidelity” by Costello, and “Continuous Trucks” by Mercury Rev. The show also features Negativland’s “The Worst Programming Ever, Mind Jamming, A Report By Rex Everything, etc.” Next is Iru Ekpunobi’s “Comfort Noise.” Writes Ekpunobi, “Comfort noise, or comfort tone, is synthetic background noise used in radio and wireless communications to fill the artificial silence in a transmission in which low volume levels are ignored by the transmitting device. In a system that disregards sound under a designated threshold, the absence of that sound must be reintroduced to comfort the listening ear.” The show also includes Chris Brookes’ “The Moratorium.” Chris Brookes is based in Newfoundland and has done a series of memorable radio pieces about the loss of the fishing industry and the impact of this loss on local lives and culture in Newfoundland. The Moratorium refers to a 1992 government decision to put a moratorium on fishing. This ended up putting 30,000 people in the fishing industry out of work and was not a successful policy for helping fish repopulate. Chris Brookes created this radio piece in collaboration with a dancer, and you can hear the rhythm and repetition and three part structure. – Described by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2019/2020, Karen Werner.
LITERATURE ALOUD: The Jungle by Upton Sinclair – ch. 8-9 (00:31:22)
It is the end of the 19th century. Like thousands of others, the Rudkus family has emigrated from Lithuania to America in search of a better life. As they settle into the Packingtown neighborhood of Chicago, they find their dreams are unlikely to be realized. In fact, just the opposite is quite likely to occur. The family, naïve to the ways of Chicago, quickly falls prey to con men and makes a series of bad decisions that lead them into wretched poverty and terrible living conditions. All are forced to find jobs in dismal working conditions for their very survival. The main character Jurgis, broken and discouraged, eventually finds solace in the American Socialist movement. This novel was written during a period in American history when “Trusts” were formed by multiple corporations to establish monopolies that stifled competition and fixed prices. Unthinkable working conditions and unfair business practices were the norm. The Jungle’s author, Upton Sinclair, was an ardent Socialist of the time. Sinclair was commissioned by the “Appeal To Reason”, a Socialist journal of the period, to write a fictional expose on the working conditions of the immigrant laborers in the meat packing industry in Chicago. Going undercover, Sinclair spent seven weeks inside the meatpacking plants gathering details for his novel. (Summary by Tom Weiss)

THE BRADCAST 8/11/2023: Alito’s Corruption; New Trump court losses (00:58:00)
Encore: original airdate 7-31-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: The Wall Street Journal has published a fawning interview with U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, in which he falsely claimed, ‘No provision in the Constitution gives [Congress] the authority to regulate the Supreme Court — period.’ Apparently, Alito has never read the Constitution’s Article III, Sec. 2, explicitly stating the Court is subject to ‘such Regulations as the Congress shall make.’ The WSJ article was written by an attorney with a landmark case pending before the Court next term — ‘Moore v. U.S.’ asks the Court to abolish all future attempts to establish a wealth tax on the nation’s billionaires as unconstitutional. Donald Trump sees more losses in court as judges in two states rejected frivolous lawsuits and motions. Callers weigh in on Supreme Court reform, wildly corrupt Justice Alito, and the Trump’s array of criminal charges and probes.

TUC RADIO: Dismantle the Doomsday Machine – Abolish Nuclear Weapons (00:29:00)
There are two locations where all US nuclear weapons are designed. Lawrence Livermore National Lab in California is one of them. Since 1983 Tri-Valley CAREs has monitored nuclear weapons and environmental clean-up throughout the US, with a special focus on Livermore Lab. Every year on August 6 Tri-Valley CAREs and supporters gather at the gates of Livermore Lab to remember the victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This year, 2023, the silent vigil was also dedicated to Daniel Ellsberg. He had been at the gates of Livermore Lab many times in the past and gotten arrested for blocking the entrance. He died in June of this year at age 93. Ellsberg had released The Pentagon Papers to hasten an end to the war on Vietnam. He was an analyst at the RAND Corp. and a consultant on nuclear warfare to the US Defense Dept. His acclaimed autobiography is titled, Doomsday Machine: Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner. Ever since his experience with nuclear war planning Ellsberg demanded dismantlement of what he termed the Doomsday Machine. Enchanted Films showed a movie with Daniel Ellsberg at the August 2023 vigil at Livermore Lab. They assembled many profound and fact filled speeches Ellsberg had given at the gates of Livermore Lab, including two recent Zoom recordings when Covid made being there in person too risky. Here are recording from 2020 and 2021. ALAN WATTS: How to Enjoy Life (00:05:44)
Buddhist teacher Watts reflects on life. Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was a British writer and lecturer who interpreted and popularized Eastern philosophy and religion for a Western audience. Born in Chislehurst, England, he moved to the United States in 1938 and began Zen training in New York. Pursuing a career, he attended Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, where he received a master’s degree in theology. Watts became an Episcopal priest in 1945, then left the ministry in 1950 and moved to California, where he joined the faculty of the American Academy of Asian Studies. Watts gained a large following in the San Francisco Bay Area while working as a volunteer programmer at KPFA, a Pacifica Radio station in Berkeley.

The bottom line here is that Trump and his co-conspirators ” a group that clearly extends far beyond the six named in Jack Smiths indictment ” were not only willing but planning to recreate Reagans and Nixons Kent State slaughter, should anybody protest their takeover of the nation. If nothing else, that is something we all must remember, and history must record.
SEA CHANGE RADIO: Philip Jacobson: The Fight To Stop Shark Finning (00:29:00)
If you were a kid in the 1970s, you undoubtedly were at least a little terrified of going into the ocean ” a fear placed squarely in your subconscious by the Jaws movies. But, according to the International Shark Attack File, there are only around 72 unprovoked shark attacks around the world per year, a relatively small amount given the many sleepless nights and swimming phobias arising from a fear of sharks. The far scarier reality is that the much-demonized shark has long been under attack itself from its greatest predator: us. Humans kill well over 100 million sharks in any given year. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak with Mongabay reporter, Philip Jacobson, to learn about the illegal shark-finning practices of one Chinese-based fishing company, why he believes this practice is far from unique, and what efforts are being taken to save this important apex predator.
LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: Asian Americans & Anti-Blackness: Truth vs. Fiction on Affirmative Action
(00:28:00)
Affirmative action’s foes worked with conservative Chinese American organizations to sue two colleges over their admissions processes. The result was a victory for activists who have been trying to do away with affirmative action for years. What led to the June 29 decision by the Trump-packed Supreme Court finally to ban race-conscious affirmative action? In this month’s Meet the BIPOC Press feature with URL Media, our guests fill in the blanks in the media coverage and correct some of the misconceptions about affirmative action, systemic racism, and how we got here. This time, Laura Flanders and co-host Sara Lomax of Philadelphia’s WURD Radio are joined by Washington DC-based journalist Brandon Tensley, the National Politics Reporter at Capital B News, a nonprofit newsroom based in Atlanta, and Claire Jean Kim, a political scientist and Asian American studies professor at UC Irvine in Southern California. CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Street Wisdom, with David Pearl (00:28:00)
I can think of no better way to mark the rather miraculous milestone of my 200th episode than with a conversation about walking and wonder. David Pearl is an innovator in business and the arts. He’s also inventor and founder of Street Wisdom, an exercise in meticulous whimsy that helps us find inspiration from strolling the streets around us.
“If you’re not curious, you tend to stay in the highways, not the byways, and you tend to stay within boundaries that your brain says, ‘You’re safe, you’re knowledgable.’… And you can go far, but you don’t go wide.” ~ David Pearl
DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 8/2/23 (00:57:11)
On the Show: Failed former President Donald Trump is indicted again, a third time, this time for his actions while President related to the attempts to overturn the 2020 election, which Trump lost to President Joe Biden. Donald Trump former lawyer Rudy Giuliani is identified as one of the unindicted co-conspirators in the latest Trump indictment. Trump supporters are not taking Trump’s third indictment well, including Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Kari Lake, Rudy Giuliani, and others. Obama-appointed judge Tanya Chutkan is assigned Donald Trump’s latest case, and she has been a tough judge with regard to the January 6 rioters. How quickly will Republicans running for the 2024 nomination start running on “I will pardon Trump?” The economy remains solid, and Republicans have no idea what to do about it. Donald Trump is interviewed by Breitbart’s Matt Boyle and both seem confused during the interview. Voicemail caller wonders whether the UFO hearings are meant to create a distraction from real issues like climate change.

When Barbie has more integrity than six Republican members of the US Supreme Court, you know American democracy is in a crisis. THE CHILDREN’S HOUR: Whales (00:58:00)

Katie also talks with a Mexican pongero, or boat driver who teaches kids and adults about the friendly whales in his backyard. LITERATURE ALOUD: The Jungle by Upton Sinclair – ch. 31 (00:48:35)

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 8/1/23 (00:55:37)
On the Show: The conclusion to David’s interview with Vivek Ramaswamy, entrepreneur and 2024 Republican presidential primary candidate, who joins David to discuss his campaign, how he plans to defeat Donald Trump, how he would defeat Joe Biden if he were to be the Republican nominee, and much more. The much-awaited Devon Archer testimony related to Joe and Hunter Biden completely flops. Fani Willis, the Georgia prosecutor investigating Donald Trump, says that charges — whatever they are — are ready to go. Florida Republican Governor and 2024 Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis implodes during an interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier. Donald Trump is clearly panicking, now predicting that his third arrest will happen “any day now.” Failed former President Donald Trump has reportedly spent $40 million on legal fees, and his PAC is running out of money. Law professor Paul Collins says that Donald Trump may die in prison if he is unwilling to strike a plea deal. Donald Trump is reportedly furious over a song referencing “prison” playing as he came out on stage at a recent event. Republican attendee at Donald Trump’s recent Lincoln Day dinner speech says Trump’s speech was “low energy.” Voicemail caller was very much not impressed with Vivek Ramaswamy’s interview with David.
