THE BRADCAST 4/28/23 (00:557:30)

Encore: original air-date 4-17-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: New revelations about the relentless lawlessness of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas underscore the corruption of the GOP’s rightwing takeover of the judiciary and their activist judges legislating from the bench. The Supreme Court placed a temporary administrative stay on unprecedented rulings by far-right activist U.S. District Judge Mathew Kacsmaryk and the far-right U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals overturning the FDA-approved use of abortion medication mifepristone in all 50 states. Democracy is under attack in Sudan, where deadly fighting has erupted between military factions. A court sentenced Russian-opposition leader Vladimir Kara-Murza to 25 years in prison for publicly opposing Putin’s bloody invasion of Ukraine. Congressional Democrats are increasingly voicing concerns about whether California’s 89-year old Senior Democratic Senator Diane Feinstein, who has missed 60 of 80 floor votes in the U.S. Senate this year, should resign, because her extended medical absence from the Senate Judiciary Committee has stalled confirmation of President Biden’s federal court judicial nominees. We open the phones to listeners — her constituents in Southern California — for THEIR opinions on whether DiFi should stay or go.

EARTH RIOT RADIO: Sing Growl Climate Chaos How (00:29:00)

The violence is rolling through our lives like unknowable deadly weather. The politicians are proud to not respond. Bad weather is just liberal hysteria. We develop secret faiths, under the surface with its greasy neon. Deep down inside as the storms and wildfires and starvation and war are accepted prefabricated fascism out in the open. But deep inside new stories unfold like luminescent flowers at the bottom of the ocean. We have transformational change to bring to that ravaged world out there. Earthalujah!

TURN ON THE NEWS: Fox Domination (00:28:00)

Tune in “Turn On The News” each week for the latest news, radio art, and more from our robot reporters, making sure you hear both sides — good and evil — every time you “Turn On The News.” This week: “Fox Domination” This week the news network that texts that it is a fake news network has to pay the piper.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN (00:59:30)

Segment One
We begin with Ross Barkan, Connie Chan, and Laura Jedeed about developments around the firing of Tucker Carlson. No one expects change from Fox as a result. It’s anticipated that Carlson will be replaced by someone of the same persuasion, even though his supporters/fans are angry.

And then we shift to Trump, who has been very effective at dismantling DeSantis, and the panel’s opinion is that Trump is the likely Republican nominee.
Segment Two
After the break we discuss President Biden, who’s running for reelection. Finding folks asking us to concentrate more on his goals, rather than “not Trump”. We then discuss how the opinions and goals of the “Tea Party” have penetrated into immigrant communities. One such misnomer is about crime and the common perception that crime is worst in the cities, when is is NOT. Data show that violent crime in cities has decreased, and crime in suburbs and outlying areas has increased, especially with respect to mass shootings.

MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR: Post Capitalist Philantropy Healing Wealth in a Time of Collapse (00:59:00)

Lynn Murphy is a strategic advisor for foundations and NGOs working in the geopolitical South. She was a senior fellow and program officer at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation where she focused on international education and global development. She resigned as a conscientious objector to neocolonial philanthropy. She holds an MA and PhD in international comparative education from Stanford University. She is also a certified Laban/Bartenieff movement analyst. Alnoor Ladha is an activist, journalist, political strategist and community organiser. From 2012 to 2019 he was the co-founder and executive director of the global activist collective The Rules. He is currently the Council Chair for Culture Hack Labs. He holds an MSc in Philosophy and Public Policy from the London School of Economics. Post capitalist philanthropy is a paradox in terms. A paradox is the appropriate starting place for the complex, entangled, messy context we find ourselves in as a species.
Post Capitalist Philanthropy is a result of decades of practice and research, including a hundred plus interviews with leading thinkers, practitioners, social scientists and wisdom keepers. Lynn Murphy and Alnoor Ladha take us on a journey from the history of wealth accumulation to the current logic of late-stage capitalism to the lived possibilities for other ways of knowing, sensing and being that can usher in life-centric models. These ontological shifts, as we call them, are at the heart of the text. Creating emerging realities is not simply about how we redistribute wealth or fight power, but rather, how we perceive and embody our actions in relationship to a dynamic, animate world.

DEEP DIVE CYBERSECURITY SHOW: The Pentagon Leaks Would Be Near Impossible to Find Beforehand (00:58:32)

THE BRADCAST 4/27/23: Attorney Keith Barber on Fox-Dominion settlement, Trump GA probe and NY rape/defamation lawsuit (00:57:30)

Original air-date 4-19-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: If you were hoping that Dominion Voting Systems was interested defending democracy rather than their bottom line, think again. Many are disappointed that there will be no public trial following Dominion’s decision to settle its defamation lawsuit against Fox ‘News’ for knowingly broadcasting baseless lies alleging that the election system vendor stole the 2020 election from Donald Trump. But corporate election vendors like Dominion are only interested in profits, not exposing Fox in court for undermining democracy. Privately-owned corporations should never have been allowed to take over our public elections in the first place. But there are other important reasons that Dominion accepted a $757.5 million settlement in exchange for dropping the case. Attorney and Daily Kos contributor KEITH BARBER explains the legal issues involved in the Fox/Dominion settlement and why he believes Dominion had no choice but to take the offer. Barber also offers insights into the new, gob-smacking court filing by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis in her criminal probe of Trump’s attempts to steal 2020 election in Georgia, and the rape and defamation lawsuit filed by columnist E. Jean Carroll against Trump in New York.

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: The Real War on Fake Drugs (00:59:07)

Nothing in this story makes sense, but its all too real. So says todays guest Jordan S Rubin whose new book is titled Bizarro: The Surreal Saga of Americas Secret War on Synthetic Drugs and the Florida Kingpins It Captured. Stranger than fiction, two men who scrupulously played by the rules, even consulting with the DEA, now sit behind bars, and for decades. Bizarre yet real. And frightening.

We also discuss the E. Jean Carroll testimony in the rape trial of Donald Trump.

TUC RADIO: Daniel Ellsberg on Freedom of the Press, Julian Assange, and the Risk of Nuclear War (00:29:00)

Daniel Ellsberg has used his experience to defend Julian Assange and other whistleblowers – even up to current days – when it has become known that he received a cancer diagnosis that gives him only a few more months to live.
Frank Barat spoke with Daniel Ellsberg on Jan 19, 2023. He is a French activist, author and film producer and has edited books with Ilan Papp, Noam Chomsky, Angela Davis and Vijay Prashad. On May 22, 2021, during the Biden administration, The New York Times reported that Daniel Ellsberg had just released classified documents revealing the Pentagon in 1958 drew up plans to launch a nuclear attack on China amid tensions over the Taiwan Strait. According to the documents, US military leaders supported a first-use nuclear strike even though they believed China’s ally, the Soviet Union, would retaliate and millions of people would perish. Here is part of an interview that Paul Jay held with Ellsberg on September 21, 2022 that gives a contemporary cast to the problem. The title of the interview is Why is Biden Risking Nuclear War With China? Paul Jay is a journalist and filmmaker. He’s the founder and host of theAnalysis.news, a video and audio current affairs interview and commentary show and website. This rebroadcast is part of a celebration of the work and life of Daniel Ellsberg. He recently disclosed that he has pancreatic cancer and has only three to six months to live. He has remained active and productive and wrote that his editor knows that he works better under a deadline. And Ellsberg adds Quote: It turns out that I also live better under a deadline!

COOL SOLUTIONS: Out of Gas, In with Justice (00:28:00)

A pilot study replacing gas stoves with induction stoves in a South Bronx public housing building did the expected and decreased indoor air pollution. Two unexpected discoveries were the popularity of the induction stoves and that the building’s old wiring could only deliver enough juice to replace stoves in a few of the apartments. Replacing gas stoves with induction stoves and the building’s broken boiler with heat pumps requires an expensive electrical upgrade. NYCHA’s response was to use its massive purchasing power to commission heat pumps which use less power. This is Part One of a mini series on Electrifying Affordable Housing.

ECONOMIC UPDATE: The Emerging New World Economy: A New Empire, a Multipolar World, or a Post-Capitalist System (00:29:00)

Four key changes drive a new world economy emerging from the old. First is capitalism’s transition from neoliberal globalizing to nationalistic capitalism. This includes the shift of capitalism’s center from western Europe and the US to Asia and the global south and also includes the deepening economic inequality inside most nations. Second is the end of the stale, old debate between private and state capitalism (misnamed as capitalism vs socialism) in favor of private + state capitalism hybrids. Third is the post-peak decline of the US empire. Fourth is the urgent question of what comes next: a new empire, a multipolar world, or a new post-capitalist system that replaces employer-employee workplace organizations (private and public) with democratically run worker cooperative organizations.

RADIO ART HOUR:Rachel Rosenthal, Michael Trigilio  (00:58:00)

This week radio art works from Rachel Rosenthal and Michael Trigilio, and introduced by Wave Farm Radio Art Fellow Jess Spear, are featured. First, “filename:FUTURFAX by Rachel Rosenthal. Like the best of dystopian fiction, “filename:FUTURFAX” (1990) at first takes us in with the premise that the future is a technological utopia where problems of hunger, deprivation, uncertainty, and unhappiness have been solved forever. The narrator receives a fax from a future civilization after a great crash, sent through a time warp, written and clarified by a computer operated by a team of scientists sending good wishes. Whispers of uncertainty slip in when you hear that art is no longer made after being deemed superfluous and subversive by the lawmakers (they do tell jokes, however). Recalling 1984 and Brave New World, the future civilization is founded on total technocratic control and scientific progress, having become de-deified and losing religion because they control all the natural functions formerly ascribed to mysterious divinities. And then moral and social decorum are maintained thanks to the implants (should we say that?). Soon its revealed that some people suffer incredible fits of boredom, and some, labeled deviants, even escape to the world outside the domed structures of the SSC (self-sufficient communities). These deviants have set up a parallel civilization, one that our scientist reports with great astonishment appears to worship the very environment, in spite of the great hardships imposed by the natural world and the ruins of 20th century civilization. Humanity, at this unknown future date, is reduced to a population of comfortable citizens living in an environment where every element, including themselves, is controlled, and a group eking out an existence and sacrificing themselves in the work of making amends with the natural world, often becoming sick or dying during cooperative clean-ups of the ruins.

LITERATURE ALOUD: Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman ch. 7 “Our Growing Modesty” (00:24:28)

Herland is a utopian novel written in1915 by feminist Charlotte Perkins Gilman author of the famous and influential short story “The Yellow Wallpaper.” It describes the adventures and education of three men who land in an isolated and get schooled by a society comprised entirely of women who reproduce via asexual reproduction. CREATING OUR PREFERRED FUTURE: Second Half Part 4 – Primer For Paradigm Shift (00:29:15)

Part 4, A Primer For Paradigm Shift is the final part of a 4 part series. The entire series provides encouragement, reasons and describes actions on behalf of a deep change in our values and goals as individuals, neighborhoods, communities, nation and world. Part 4 First Half is about taking paradigm shift ideas to a wider audience. It starts with explaining how to become an advocate for paradigm shift and suggestions for becoming even more effective if one is already an activist. Next is a look at public interest groups [PIOs], large and small and the assets they have for advocating paradigm shift to their members, the wider world and in greater collaboration with other PIOs. are all on the same team. They have common cause and common actions can help bring about a broader movement for moving towards a preferred future.
Part 4 Second Half starts about here.
There is a description of educational content these groups can bring to their members and the wider world starting with reducing their eco footprints and prioritizing their time and money. Forward movement for one, is forward movement for all. Part 4 examines a dozen economic, social and educational entities and suggests how they might be affected by paradigm shift and how they might be helpful in participating in paradigm shift. Faith groups, the military, labor, youth, homeless, the major political parties and well known social movements.
Finally, a look at making capitalism and the consumer culture the focus of a Truth and Reconciliation Process to bring to account the damage this economic system and its owner and helpers have inflicted on people and planet for many generations. Based on other T and R Commissions from other parts of the world. This is the final part of A Primer For Paradigm Shift.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 4/24/23 (00:55:33)

On the Show: It is not hypocritical to demand systemic change while advising people to do what they can for themselves. Supposedly pro-freedom Ben Shapiro says that municipalities should be allowed to ban men from wearing women’s clothes. Black Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson says that black Americans owe white Americans reparations. MyPillow CEO and Founder Mike Lindell is ordered to pay a man $5 million for debunking Pillow’s election lies. Donald Trump is interviewed by the Nelk Boys and it goes horribly wrong. Donald Trump delivers an unhinged word salad during an interview on Fox News with Mark Levin. Donald Trump humiliates himself in a blurry, out of sync speech. Failed Arizona Republican gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake has a new conspiracy theory about her own election loss. Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis visibly shakes when asked about new polling that has Donald Trump crushing him in the 2024 Republican primary. Voicemail caller asks whether we should be worried about what MAGA Trump supporters will do if Trump loses in 2024.

THE BRADCAST 4/21/23: Political strategist Simon Rosenberg on young voters; A bad day for Fox ‘News’ is good for American democracy (00:57:30)

Encore: original air-date 4-12-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: It’s been a tough week for Fox ‘News,’ as jury selection gets underway in Dominion Voting Systems’ $1.6 billion defamation suit lawsuit against the cable network for knowingly airing false claims that the 2020 election was rigged against Donald Trump. The case is important because Fox is now the most dangerous institution in America – – not due to their Republican politics, but due to the danger they pose to democracy itself. Fox has reportedly settled with a Venezuelan businessman the network falsely named in its baseless 2020 election claims. On Wednesday, the judge in the Dominion case sanctioned Fox attorneys for withholding evidence and making very serious ‘misrepresentations to the court.’ A major shareholder filed suit against Fox owner Rupert Murdoch and top executives for violating fiduciary duty in airing the false election claims. Then longtime political strategist SIMON ROSENBERG, President of NDN/New Policy Institute, explains his new project, ‘Get to 55.’ Rosenberg was one of the very, very few who accurately predicted voters would not deliver a ‘red wave’ for Republicans in the 2022 midterm elections. Rosenberg explains how the concerted effort to mobilize the youth vote successfully flipped the Wisconsin Supreme Court to a liberal majority for the first time in 15 years. Rosenberg details new organizing efforts to grow the pro-democracy coalition to increase the Democratic President’s margin of victory from 51 percent to 55 percent, help Republicans break free from MAGA extremism, and why doing so is critical to ensure the survival of democracy against autocracy.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN (00:59:00)

Segment One
We begin the show with Julie Rovner of KFF Health News. We discuss the recent rulings on the Mifepristone abortion pill, and how it has affected Big Pharma and Doctors. Doctors are again, after a hundred years, trying to insist on their primacy in health care for women, not judges and lawmakers.
Segment Two
We then speak with Harold Meyerson & Bill Curry about the Fox-Dominion settlement. The amount, less than half of Dominions original filing of 1.7 billion isn’t enough to cripple Fox, and Fox was not forced to apologize and acknowledge their lies. However, others will likely not escape reckoning: Alex Jones, Trump, Clarence Thomas, Steve Bannon. We also discuss the indefinite absence of Dianne Feinstein, and her refusal to resign. He membership on the Judiciary Committee is critical.

THE BRADCAST 4/20/23 (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Lots of dupes and dopes and grifters in the Republican Party. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy introduced the House GOP’s demands in exchange for raising the nation’s debt ceiling so that the US government doesn’t default on its debts, crashing the world economy. McCarthy proposed massive, cruel cuts in social safety net programs that punish the poor and more, and would increase the national debt. House Republicans also want to gut President Biden’s landmark climate law, the Inflation Reduction Act, and its clean air provisions. McCarthy’s own district in Bakersfield, CA has the most polluted air of any city in the nation, and his demand to cut clean air incentives will make it even worse. Arbitration panel ordered MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell to pay $5 million to the man who won Lindell’s contest by proving that Lindell’s ‘evidence’ was nonsense and did not show Chinese interference in the 2020 election. Former Mesa County, CO election official Tina Peters received a light sentence in the first of two criminal cases regarding her decision to breach security and unlawfully copy and distribute highly sensitive election system software. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: Why They Fear Curiosity (00:58:00)

The pressure to prevent active curiosity is a serious threat to democracy. Our guests today are authors Perry Zurin and Dani Bassett whose new book is Curious Minds, The Power of Connection. The push is on by the Trumpist right to prevent gathering of information. That threatens their power and control, because knowledge can lead to a network of interconnections. Questioning and curiosity is essential to being human. Why does that threaten the right? There is reason for optimism, though. Give a listen.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 4/20/23 (00:58:00)

Part 1:
We talk with Andrew Boyd, comic, environmentalist. We cover grief, hope, and gallows humor. He is looking for a “better catastrophe”.
Part 2:
We talk with Alex Sammon, of Slate.com about the Dominion and Fox settlement. The outcome, penalizing Fox for more than 800M dollars is not in the public interest, because it is not a crippling amount to Fox, and is likely covered by insurance, and tax deductible. This means that corporations are not here to save democracy or truth.
We also discuss the problem of Dianne Feinstein, who is a member of the judicial committee. She has been absent, and there are rumors of her incapacity. No federal judges can be confirmed without her or a replacement. Finding such a replacement is proving difficult.

GROWING GREENER: A Rift in the Native Plant World (00:29:00)

Gardeners are the worst threat to native plants. Hostility toward horticulturists is common within the ecological restoration community. But, John Gedraitis of Van Berkum Nursery says, its an impediment to growers such as him who want to expand the availability of local ecotype plants, genetically adapted natives grown from locally collected wild seed.

TUC RADIO: Daniel Ellsbergs Pentagon Papers – TUC Radio Archives – TWO of TWO (00:29:00)

This is the second part of a talk by Daniel Ellsberg that he gave on December 18, 2007 in downtown San Francisco to a small group of members of the Republican Roundtable. Those were the George W Bush years and it was well known that Ellsberg campaigned against the threats of war on Iran. I had permission to film the event and was concerned about a possible confrontation. Half-way through this 29 minute segment Ellsberg responds to a statement that he was advocating treason – to which he gives a legally and historically brilliant response that still applies today, to Julian Assange, Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden and all whistleblowers. But in the end he received a good round of applause. As of April 18 – there are already over 1300 entries on search engines for Daniel Ellsberg Week in quotation marks. Join in with your memories and appreciation and affection for Daniel Ellsberg.

This week on CounterSpin: It is tax season in the US, when some of us wonder why the government, which knows how much we earn, requires us to guess, with the threat of prison if we guess wrong. And leads some of us to ponder what we get in return for our resources—streets and stop signs, to be sure, but also wars and wheelbarrows of money doled out those who already have plenty. We’ve talked about taxes and tax policy a lot on CounterSpin, enough to put together a walk-through of some of the issues, and the way news media explain them.

THOM HARTMANN Best of 1 Hour: Does Fox News Owe Accountability to a Hell of a Lot More People than Just Dominion? (00:58:00)

SEA CHANGE RADIO: Finless Foods: A Different Kettle of Fish (00:29:00)

Long time Sea Change Radio listeners know a thing or two about the challenges of being both a seafood lover and an environmentalist. It’s hard to keep track of which seafoods are sustainable and which involve practices that cause egregious harm to ecosystems and humans alike — so much so that places like the Monterey Bay Aquarium have created handy guides for shopping and ordering at restaurants. Fortunately, there are people dedicated to finding ways to get protein without depleting the planets oceans, like our guest today on Sea Change Radio. This week we speak with Shannon Cosentino-Roush, the Chief Strategy Officer of Finless Foods, a start-up that makes a plant-based alternative tuna product and is awaiting federal approval for its cell-based seafood product. We learn about the ins and outs of the alternative seafood industry, look at the exploding popularity of pok bowls, and examine the frontier of cell-based protein manufacturing.

ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Staying Engaged to Avoid Burnout (00:29:51)

On this show we are looking for the warning signs, taking inventory of our discontent, and listening to our internal struggles to avoid burnout and stay engaged. Whether you are feeling frazzled in the moment or downright over it either professionally or personally, wait, take a step back, a big breath, now let it out. We’ve got time to re-engage with a re-engineered approach. You might need a new pair of eyes on the situation. Those could be yours after you’ve had a chance to unpack some of your frustration or you could invite in a third party opinion. Being so stuck in a routine or too up close and personal could be preventing you from finding your way out.

This is Part One of a mini series on Electrifying Affordable Housing .

RiverXchange is a program that partners with schools in Albuquerque, which is nestled along the Rio Grande, to create projects that protect our precious environment. Kids learn how to make the environment around them better using the RiverXchange Project inside their classrooms over the course of a school year, tackling problems like food waste, littering, and planting trees. We also learn about Senator Gaylord Nelson, the founder of Earth Day in the United States, from our friends at PBS Wisconsin Education. In this episode we hear directly from kids about the impact this program has had on their classrooms, their schools, and themselves. We hear from kids in Albuquerque New Mexico at Zia Elementary School, students in Mr. Rogers’ class at North Valley Academy, and at Mission Avenue Elementary. Also thanks to the kids and teachers who submitted content for this episode. Celebrate Earth Day with us, honoring rivers with RiverXchange. This episode is mixed with great music celebrating the Earth, and especially our precious rivers.

CREATING OUR PREFERRED FUTURE: Second Half Part 4 – Primer For Paradigm Shift (00:29:15)

art 4, A Primer For Paradigm Shift is the final part of a 4 part series.
THE BRADCAST 4/14/23: Journalist Alex Burness on refusal by VA’s Youngkin to re-enfranchise former felons; AR GOP restricts mail-in voting (00:58:00)

Original air-date 3-29-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: Republicans are pro-murder and anti-democracy. It’s just that simple. And we’ve got much more evidence of that today. It’s an election year in Virginia, with the entire state legislature up for grabs, so the state’s Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin has unilaterally rescinded a bipartisan policy used by previous governors to vastly expand the restoration of voting rights to former felons. Youngkin will instead use a secret process and will personally decide, on a case-by-case basis, who he will allow to vote. Voting rights and justice reporter ALEX BURNESS of Bolts Magazine explains Youngkin’s new appalling, anti-democracy policy, and how it harms communities, public safety, and those trying to return to civil society after completing their sentences in Virginia. Arkansas GOP Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed a law erecting new barriers to absentee voting and the ability of voters to place citizen initiatives on the statewide ballot. Also today: Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN), who represents the Nashville district where a school shooter killed six on Monday, ran away from a reporter asking Ogles why he deleted his gun-filled Christmas card, and why he favors guns and murder over the lives of children. Comedian Jon Stewart exposes the rank hypocrisy of a Republican Oklahoma lawmaker who wants to ‘protect children’ from drag shows but not from being murdered by guns. Big Government Republicans in Kentucky voted to over-ride the Democratic governor’s veto of a law that bans health care for trans kids, bans all discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in all grades K-12, and more.

THE BRADCAST 4/13/23 (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Democratic state Rep. Justin Pearson was re-seated at the Tennessee State House on Thursday after he was expelled last week by the out-of-control, racist, gerrymandered GOP majority. Pearson delivered searing remarks in his return to the statehouse, before Republicans tossed out the rules to ram through a vote on a bill censoring free speech for college students. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) fatuously called for arming schools like banks just days before the mass shooting at a bank in Kentucky. New polling data indicates the majority of Americans have noticed the Republicans’ pro-murder, pro-Big Government, anti-free speech, anti-democracy idiocy. After only 100 days in the majority, House Republicans have an abysmal and falling approval rating of negative 24 points overall. If you thought you’d heard the end of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ decades-long crime spree, think again – – a new investigation by Pro Publica builds on their previous reporting showing that the corrupt Thomas failed to disclose lavish gifts and luxury travel, as required by federal law, that were funded by GOP mega-donor Harlan Crow. New reporting reveals Thomas also failed to disclose that he sold property to Crow, including the house where his mother still lives. Also today: An incredible 25 inches of rain in 24 hours crippled the city of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: You’ll Never Guess What Country Is Leading the Green Wave  (00:58:38)

From a vaunted Latin American pink wave, Colombia’s new president Gustavo Petro and vice president Francia Marquez realized that even with socialised profits, more extraction does not equal more wealth. In fact as the Insitute for Policy Studies John Feffer explains on this podcast, not only is more fossil fuel not sustainable, but a bold new green direction will yield far greater benefits. And it is actually realistic. Give a listen.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 4/14/23 (00:58:00)

Part 1:

We talk with Scott Braddok about Texas. The governor is announcing that he is going to pardon Daniel Perry, a convicted murderer of protestors. This stance appears to have been prodded by Tucker Carlson. Abbott is also pressuring state legislators to approve of school vouchers in Texas. There is resistance, especially in rural areas. Abbott is seeking to ‘deputize’ armed civilians to patrol the Texas border with Mexico.

Part 2:

We talk with Bill Curry.

Elon Musk has branded NPR as a government agency, which has prompted NPR to withdraw from Twitter. We discuss the privatization of Big Brother, in the form of Elon Musk and his ilk.

TUC RADIO: Daniel Ellsberg’s Pentagon Papers (00:29:00)

It was the evening of December 18, 2007, and I was setting up my recording equipment in an unfamiliar downtown San Francisco conference room. The events coordinator of the Republican Roundtable had offered me an invitation to record Daniel Ellsberg – and of course I said yes – in spite of the unfamiliar venue. One of the guests walked past me and said matter-of-factly: Ellsberg is a traitor and proceeded to his chair. And by the time that Daniel Ellsberg arrived I was certain that there were only two people in the room who were not Republican. In spite of some skepticism Ellsberg moved the audience with one of the most personal and detailed descriptions of his experiences as Marine and then inside the Pentagon that in the end he received warm applause. Daniel Ellsberg recently wrote a public letter disclosing that he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and has only three to six months to live.

Radio producers, video makers, artist and writers are celebrating Daniel Ellsberg Week at the end of April 2023. And this is my way of showing him love and appreciation.

The CLT established permanent low-income housing for Cooper Square residents. The film, which is out now from New Day Films, was directed and produced by our guests Kelly Anderson and Ryan Joseph, with Kathryn Barnier. ALAN WATTS: Stop Feeling Lost by Doing This (00:15:17)

If there is one simple question that bothers us all as human beings, it is :why are we living ? It is a burden on our shoulders, and we cannot think about it without going depressed or becoming sad, because simply we can’t answer it. We got blocked. In this lecture, Alan Watts talks about the game of life, how the answer of that question is: to play. To simply not take it seriously, to stay within the flow of life without having to be very strict and rigid about it. We have to take it as if it was a game. Because if we take it seriously, we will be forced to think scientifically, to predict the future, and be aware that any false move, would lead us to a fatal death, which is not the case.

ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Staying Flexible in Your Thinking to Easily Embrace Change (00:30:08)

On this show we are going to stay flexible, gently planting a foot to pivot, so that we can easily embrace change. The only thing that seems consistent, is change. How do you deal with your ever-evolving life? I believe certain seasons are prone to unfolding in due time and others see rapid change that may seem overwhelming and impossible to keep up with. What season are you currently in? Are you holding on for dear life or are you pushing your ideas up the side of a mountain? No matter where you find yourself, it’s important to stay flexible in your thinking. It’s all too easy to get rooted in one thought track that can narrow your view and limit your possibilities. There is more to learn as you connect and open your mind and your heart.

THE CHILDREN’S HOUR: Autism (00:58:00)

This time on The Children’s Hour we learn about autism from a father and son who literally wrote the book about it for kids. Justin and David Flood wrote the book A Kids Book About Autism to help kids understand what autism is, how it impacts people, and how kids without autism can befriend kids with autism. We also hear from renowned scientist with autism, Temple Grandin who has a list of things she wishes parents would know about raising a child with autism, and challenges she believes autistic children should take on. Oliver Sacks wrote in the forward of Thinking in Pictures that her first book Emergence: Labeled Autistic was unprecedented because there had never before been an inside narrative of autism. Lorenzo Manuel started impersonating Michael Jackson after the singer’s death. At the time he found impersonating Michael helped him to cope with the social pressures of middle school. Now, a senior in High School, Lorenzo finds that the time he spent studying Michael has helped him find a way to be himself. RadioActive Youth Media reporter Meghan O’Kelly talked with Lorenzo. The world is teetering on the edge of disaster. The Great Depression ” the Cold War ” 9-11 ” Katrina ” the 2008 Economic Meltdown ” Covid… Doesn’t it make sense to build yourself a bunker, stock it with beans and ammunition, and wait out the Zombie Apocalypse? Is that what it means to be a prepper. Or is it just a common sense approach to have the skills and supplies on hand to deal with whatever emergency may come your way?

RADIO ART HOUR: The Foremen, Lia Kohl, Lawrence Weiner  (00:58:00)

Today’s show features a song, The Foremen’s “Privateers of the Public Airwaves,” plus Lia Kohl’s “when glass is there, and water,” and “Need to Know” by Lawrence Weiner, and introduced by Tyler Maxin. Chicago-based sound artist Kohl has been playing cello along with the radio on her 2022 release “Untitled Radio (Futile, Fertile), and the 2023 album “The Ceiling Reposes.” On this show we sample, “when glass is there, and water.” Then the show finishes with “Need to Know” by Lawrence Weiner from 1978, and introduced by Tyler Maxin. In this unconventional radio play staged by Lawrence Weiner, a group of players that include filmmaker Michael H. Shamberg, writer Ann Sargent-Wooster, musician Peter Gordon, and the artist himself weave in and out of overlapping conversations and monologues, which range in tone from turgid party chatter to intimate pillow talk. Occasionally, the dialogue seems to comment on itself: one character describes having watched a movie with no identifiable characters, resigning herself to eventually just identify with the landscape, and later, two readers have a debate about if all art aspires to the immediacy of music. A narrator (Weiner), whose booming voice cuts through the clamor, posits that the titular need to know, a particular orientation towards media and time, was inaugurated with the televised riots at the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention. A sustained, deconstructed riff on Sam Cooke’s Wonderful World (1960) floats throughout, performed live by Peter Gordon. Produced as a real-time multitrack broadcast, Weiner arranged and conducted these moving parts from the sound booth, live-cueing players and directing a technician to amplify and fade with hand motions. Described by Weiner as a sound structure, the piece parallels his noted typographic works that treat language as a sculptural material, using the arc and texture of the broadcast to experiment with the fundamentals of form. Although unique for the artist as a rare foray into radio, Need to Know resonates with his dramatic video works A First Quarter (1973) and Do You Believe in Water? (1976), and later repetitious doo-wop collaborations with Ned Sublette and the Persuasions. The work aired on WBAI-FM on a Sunday afternoon program hosted by James Umland, a sound artist whose weekly show featured interviews with figures such as John Cage and Dave Brubeck, and who participates here as a voice actor. – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Art Fellow 2022-2023, Tyler Maxin.

CREATING OUR PREFERRED FUTURE (00:29:00)

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 4/10/23 (00:51:28)

Republicans in the Tennessee state legislature oust two Democratic representatives, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, for breaking the rules of decorum during a protest against gun violence. Representative Alexandria Ocasio Cortez calls for the impeachment of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas over his latest corruption scandal. North Dakota lawmakers approve expanding free lunches for themselves, but not for K-12 students in the state. There’s no evidence to suggest the phrase “get woke go broke” is actually true. THE BRADCAST 04.07.23: ‘BradCast’ 4/7/2023 (Encore: Journalist Russ Baker on NYT’s Reagan-Carter-Iran Hostage scoop; TN school shooting and Fox ‘News’ (00:58:00)

Original air-date 3-27-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: Accountability still matters, even for presidential misdeeds from more than 40 years ago. Longtime investigative journalist RUSS BAKER, editor in chief of news site Who What Why, explains his latest article, ‘The Iran Hostages, Carter, Reagan, and Bush: What the NY Times ‘Scoop’ Missed.’ Baker details the stunning allegations reported in the New York Times by Ben Barnes, a Democratic operative, who claims that during the 1980 Presidential campaign he unwittingly participated in secret negotiations between top Reagan campaign officials and Iran to prevent the release of American hostages until after the 1980 election. Baker, who has been investigating the Reagan sabotage claim for decades, discusses the merits of Barnes’ story, the documentary evidence, and who he thinks really engineered the ‘traitorous’ deal on behalf of the Reagan campaign. Baker also explains why it all still matters, so many years later, how the corporate media failed to inform the public, and how different the world would likely be today if not for Reagan’s defeat — by hook or by crook — of Carter. Also today: deadly tornadoes bulldoze a path of destruction in Mississippi. A few choice words for Fox ‘News’ anchors after the latest mass school shooting in Nashville.

EARTH RIOT RADIO: Reverend Billy’s Passover & Easter Message (00:29:00)

Anne and Paul Ehrlich wrote: Evidence points to the need for a quasi-religious transformation of cultural values.

Passover and Easter are liberation stories, from Egypt & from Rome; into the Promised Land & into the miracle of Life After Death. Christians & Jews celebrate control over the Earth, its storms & bodies of water & animals. An obedient natural world is the theatrical frame of Moses and Jesus. But that is the virtual reality of faith. In fact, of course, the Earth is in control & never more than now, as we careen into the Sixth Extinction. To believe in this planet-wide event is to have a new kind of faith. Earthalujah!

THE BRADCAST 04.06.23: Lifestyles of the Rich and Thomas: New reporting reveals corruption and law-breaking by Justice Clarence Thomas (00:57:30)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The lawlessness of U.S. Supreme Court Clarence Thomas is endless. Back in 2011, the BRAD BLOG documented how Justice Thomas, for many years, omitted his wife’s salary from the far-right Heritage Foundation on mandatory financial disclosure forms, in violation of federal law. Once caught, Thomas amended the filings. Around the same time period, his wife, Ginni Thomas, launched a dark money ‘non-profit’ organization that pulled in funding from rightwing groups with business before the U.S. Supreme Court, including the Citizens United group that shortly thereafter received a favorable ruling from Thomas and the rightwing SCOTUS majority that overturned dark money disclosure rules. Today, stunning new reporting from Pro Publica exposes how Thomas has, for decades, received undisclosed donations in the form of luxury vacations around the world from major Republican mega-donor Harlan Crow. Thomas’ failure to report these trips is not only shockingly unethical for a member of the U.S. Supreme Court, but experts say it is also illegal. Also today: some thoughts on the ‘uncharted waters’ of Donald Trump’s first (but not likely last) criminal indictment this week, courtesy of Daily Kos contributor ‘Dartagnan.’ Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

ALAN WATTS: Conquering Fear (00:14:32)

Conquering Fear by Alan Watts. Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was a British writer and lecturer who interpreted and popularized Eastern philosophy and religion for a Western audience. Watts wrote more than 25 books and articles on subjects important to Eastern and Western religion, introducing the then-burgeoning youth culture to The Way of Zen (1957), one of the first bestselling books on Buddhism. In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), Watts proposed that Buddhism could be thought of as a form of psychotherapy and not a religion. He considered Nature, Man, and Woman (1958) to be, “from a literary point of view—the best book I have ever written.” He also explored human consciousness and psychedelics in the essay “The New Alchemy” (1958) and in the book The Joyous Cosmology (1962).

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: The Craft of Creativity, with Matt Cronin (00:28:00)

Are some people just born more creative than the rest of us? Absolutely not says George Mason University professor Matthew Cronin, but true “creatives” work hard to hone their craft, leave themselves open to change of perspective — and curiosity turns out to play an important role. It’s all about the process…

“It seems to me that teaching people to not be so upset with uncertainty would be part of the craft of curiosity.” ~ Matt Cronin

DAVID PAKMAN 4/5/23 (00:55:37)

On the Show: Liberal judge Janet Protasiewicz defeats conservative opponent Dan Kelly, giving liberals control of the Wisconsin Supreme Court for the first time in 15 years. Progressive organizer Brandon Johnson wins the Chicago Mayoral election. Failed former President Donald Trump is arrested and perp-walked, charged with 34 felonies to which he pleaded not guilty. Donald Trump is potentially facing 136 years in prison per many media outlets, but in reality is facing no more than 4 years, and probably zero. Donald Trump’s criminal defense attorneys hold a post-arrest press conference and it goes very poorly. Donald Trump holds a post-arrest speech back at his home in Florida, Mar-a-Lago, and it is really humiliating. Radical Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene is forced to flee her own protest in New York City as hecklers shut her down. Newsmax anchor Greg Kelly says that Donald Trump looks even more “presidential” while under arrest and in police custody. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham is back on television, crying again, begging for money for Donald Trump. Voicemail caller jokingly points out the absurdity of the new right wing talking point, “if they can arrest Trump, this can happen to anyone.”

On this show we will be inspired by action. From a spark to a flame, our guest has carved a meaningful path through life with passion and purpose. How many times has your great idea been snuffed with self-doubt? If you could go back and relive those moments, would you have taken the leap, risked failure, and been able to recover, re-engineer, and relaunch? How many of you are sitting there today with an idea and a purpose but waiting for the signal that you should act? If any of that sounds familiar, keep listening.

WHEN THE BIOMASS HITS THE WIND TURBINE # 176: Community Benefit Agreements (00:29:06)

Huge amounts of money have been allocated by the government under the Infrastructure Law as well as the Inflation Reduction Act. So how do local recipients ensure that the funds actually benefit the local community ” and not just provide wages for out-of-town workers who swoop in to build a project and then move on to follow the money? Community Benefit Agreements are one tool to make sure these funds are equitably distributed. Annie and Jay Warmke of Blue Rock Station are joined by Natalia Rudiak of ReImagine Appalachia in a discussion of how the region can win the win when these funds are allocated.

RADIO ART HOUR: Susan Stone, Tony Schwartz  (00:58:00)

This week works from two artists who worked with New York City radio stations, Susan Stone from WBAI and Tony Schwartz from WNYC. First, “House with a View” by Stone. “House with a View” was created by American radio artist Susan Stone who has kindly contributed the piece, which is not widely available, to the Wave Farm Radio Art Archive. Stone had her start in radio at WBAI in NYC in 1979 producing a radio show called “Radio Schizophonia” with fellow radio artist Gregory Whitehead. She was involved for many years with Pacifica Radio KPFA-FM in Berkley California. Stone wrote to me about the process of creating House with a View, which was inspired by her short radio piece called Couch, which is also included in the Archive. You can actually hear clips of Couch and another of her shorts, Langue Etude, in the longer piece “House with a View” Stone writes, I wanted to play with the sonic construct of moving through rooms, sounding out what might have transpired within each one. At the time the tech-play was setting up long acetate tape loops, threaded through standing audio tape decks, the tape crisscrossing my studio like a cat’s cradle…This created a choral outcome through the chance operations of phrasing “- how one voice became many with timing variations, one sentence at a time. – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2019/2020, Karen Werner. Then tune in “Favorite Sounds;” “How We Remember;” and “Music in Marble Halls” from Schwartz (1962-1970), also introduced by Werner. For over 30 years Schwartz produced weekly radio programs about sound for the NYC public radio station, WNYC. Schwartz also created records for Smithsonian folkways that feature his distinct style, described as part anthropological study, part hometown travelogue. Schwartz developed a portable tape recording set-up in the 195Os which enabled him to collect sounds outside the studio ” on the streets and in his home. He edits and presents the pieces in a distinct way. Plus, Schwartz is very likable; a tenderness, humor, curiosity, and intimacy come through in his pieces. A poignant detail is that he was agoraphobic and rarely traveled outside his NYC neighborhood. His recordings create an expansive sonic world. The first of these three pieces by Schwartz is called “Favorite Sounds” and was recorded at the Jewish Guild for the Blind in New York City in 1963. The second features the voices of New York City teenagers, and is called “How We Remember” and is from 1970. And the third piece in this selection is about the pleasures of sound called “Music in Marble Halls,” created in 1962. The first two pieces are from the Library of Congress Tony Schwartz collection: https://www.loc.gov/rr/record/schwartzrecordings.html. The third piece is from Schwartzs Folkways album, “You’re Stepping on My Shadow, Sound Stories of NYC.” These are also introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2019/2020, Karen Werner.

CREATING OUR PREFERRED FUTURE: Second Half Part 3 Primer For Paradigm Shift (00:29:00)

A Primer For Paradigm Shift is a four part series. It is a how to for paradigm shift. The second half of part 3 takes a look at real life examples of paradigm shift. These are projects and initiatives that give us an idea of what a preferred future might look like – a society that lives within the boundaries of the natural world, strives to bring out the best in positive human potential and is served by an honest economic system.

Specific examples include transforming a suburban property, eco villages, youth, investing, neighborhoods and a lot more. The primer affirms, we don’t need to wait for some rainbow future. We can create many aspects of a preferred future sooner than later starting in our own lives, by how we manage our own time and money.

DAVID PAKMAN 4/3/23 (00:55:09)

On the Show: Failed former President Donald Trump will be arrested, booked, and arraigned in court in New York City tomorrow, with an expected 34 criminal counts against him. Donald Trump’s press conference, which he plans to hold at Mar-a-Lago after his arraignment tomorrow, could get him re-arrested if indeed the judge issues a gag order. It is imperative for democracy that there be cameras in the courtroom during Donald Trump’s arraignment tomorrow. Donald Trump Jr’s downward spiral over the indictment of his father continues. Eric Trump tells another “tears in my eyes” story, claiming that a plane full of passengers started hugging him when the indictment against his father was announced. Donald Trump desperately begs for money on the eve of his arrest. Radical Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene is profiled on CBS’ 60 Minutes by Leslie Stahl, and it’s utterly horrifying. Former Arkansas Republican Governor Asa Hutchinson enters the 2024 Republican primary race against Donald Trump, Nikki Haley, and Vivek Ramaswamy. Attorney Alan Dershowitz says he is suing Michael Cohen, announcing this on the Alex Jones show. David’s April Fool’s show backfires brutally. Voicemail caller says he is going to have David removed from YouTube.

THE BRADCAST 3/31/23: The Nation’s John Nichols on WI’s critical state Supreme Court election; Stunning news from Trump stolen docs case (00:58:00)

Original air-date: 3-22-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: Amid a momentary pause in the ongoing Indictment Watch for our disgraced former president, the ‘most important election of the year’ is now underway in Wisconsin. Journalist, author and Wisconsin native JOHN NICHOLS of The Nation discusses the extraordinarily heated and critical WI state Supreme Court election that may finally flip control of the state’s high court to liberals for the first time in 15 years. Nichols explains why this particular race is critical to Wisconsin, to women’s reproductive rights, worker rights, voting rights, free and fair elections, and to the nation as a whole in advance of the 2024 Presidential election in the closely-divided battleground state. Also today: In the federal grand jury investigation of Donald Trump’s theft of classified documents from the White House, an appeals court has ordered Trump attorney Evan Corcoran to testify and turn over documents in the probe, piercing attorney-client privilege under the ‘crime-fraud exception.’ But longtime prosecutors say the court’s order requiring Trump’s team and the Justice Department’s Special Counsel’s office to rapidly file briefs overnight, in mere hours, is unprecedented, unleashing a flurry of speculation, including whether the emergency order signaled ‘an urgent issue of national security’, and more.
