In case you hadn’t noticed, the climate is changing and plants are dying. How can homesteaders cope with extreme weather events and a changing ecology. Well, one way is to create an environment for their garden that they can control to a certain extent. This is where high tunnels come in. A high tunnel, or hoop house is a greenhouse like structure where plants can be cultivated and raised under more controlled conditions.

Deborah is editor of the New York Times bestseller Barracoon: The Story of the Last Black Cargo by Zora Neale Hurston. Deborah is an African American and Africana Studies Independent Scholar, Writer, and Literary Critic, and she holds MA and Ph.D. degrees in English from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and traveled to Benin, in West Africa as a Fulbright-Hays fellow. Deborah Plant grew up in Louisiana, but now lives in Florida, and she joins us today via zoom from Florida.
LITERATURE ALOUD: Looking Backward 2000-1887 by Edward Bellamy ch.12 (00:22:41)
Published in 1888, this short novel focuses on the education of a wealthy man from 1887 who, amidst the labor struggles and wealth inequalities of The Gilded Age, experiences a “Mesmeric sleep” until the year 2000 when he is awakened to see an America transformed by the gradual, non-violent evolution from primitive capitalist exploitation to an advanced cooperative socialism. The novel predicts the radio, the credit card and big box stores as the characters discuss the problems and illogic of dog-eat-dog capitalism and the superior culture of a society focused on the benefit of all rather than the enrichment of a few.
