SEA CHANGE RADIO: John Stoehr: Dems and the State of Political Journalism (00:29:00)

When you read political articles these days, do you often find yourself incensed that the author has chosen to speak for “mainstream Dems,” “many Americans” and other wide swaths of the electorate without the slightest bit of data to back it up – or have you become immune to this sort of framing? This week on Sea Change Radio we speak to John Stoehr of The Editorial Board about the reliance that political journalists have on the “voice of God” to carve the narratives they desire. We discuss how the media has created a dynamic where political fictions so easily become reality, look at the impact that the DSA, the Democratic Socialists of America, is actually having on the Democratic party, and examine communication issues within the party’s leadership.

Guest host Russ Eagle and Clay talk about the annual Lewis and Clark Cultural tour, just ended, after three days on the White Cliffs section of the Missouri River in Montana and then three days up in the Bitterroot Mountains on the Lolo or Nez Perce Trail. Clay and Russ discuss Thomas Jefferson, Lewis and Clark, Native American history, and the status and future of America’s public lands. Lewis and Clark crossed the continent between 1803 and 1806. The Expedition is the most famous of all American exploration stories until at least the Apollo Moon landing program of the 1960s. The Lewis and Clark Cultural Tour is physically strenuous. Still, everyone made it up the Wendover Death March, and we had a joyous farewell banquet at Lochsa Lodge west of Missoula. This episode was recorded on August 3, 2026.

LITERATURE ALOUD: Looking Backward 2000-1887 by Edward Bellamy ch. 2-3 (00:27:19)
Published in 1888, this short novel focuses on the education of a wealthy man from 1887 who, amidst the labor struggles and wealth inequalities of The Gilded Age, experiences a “Mesmeric sleep” until the year 2000 when he is awakened to see an America transformed by the gradual, non-violent evolution from primitive capitalist exploitation to an advanced cooperative socialism. The novel predicts the radio, the credit card and big box stores as the characters discuss the problems and illogic of dog-eat-dog capitalism and the superior culture of a society focused on the benefit of all rather than the enrichment of a few.

THE BRADCAST: 8/19/2026 Hope for Democracy Shines After Fascinating Primaries in WY, FL, AK, and more  (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Wyoming, Florida, and Alaska delivered fascinating primary results while highlighting the corrosive effect of outside special interest money in our democratic elections. A US House runoff in California is too close to call, despite a flood of AIPAC campaign cash. Donald Trumps influence appears to be weakening as his candidates lost in Wyoming and elsewhere. Trumpy Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) will face former Republican-turned-Democrat David Jolly for Florida’s gubernatorial seat. Despite being outspent 16-1, progressive Angie Nixon scored a surprise win over Alexander Vindman in Florida’s Democratic US Senate primary. Former Rep. Mary Peltola (D) led Alaska’s top-four US Senate primary, and voters approved new limits on campaign finance. But Elon Musk and his billionaire buddies are funding an effort to tear down Alaska’s reforms on voting and campaign finance.

THE BRADCAST: 8/18/2026 Is the Zombie Myth that Repubs are Better than Dems on the Economy Finally Dead?; Guest: Michael Tomasky of The New Republic (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The Trump Administration moved to end the ‘Roadless Rule,’ opening up millions of acres of the public’s pristine, protected national forests to logging, mining and drilling. Voters head to the polls for primaries in Alaska, Wyoming, and Florida, which has several nutty races. The New Republic’s MICHAEL TOMASKY discusses why new polls indicate that majorities of American voters now say Democrats are better stewards of the economy than Republicans, thanks to Donald Trump’s reckless, irrational, destabilizing policies. Tomasky debunks several GOP zombie myths with astonishing historical data and context; explains how the rightwing media echo chamber perpetuates those myths with help from corporate mainstream media; and actions to shift course so that the public hears and understands the facts. This episode explores why we can recognize that a relationship, reaction, belief, or behavior isnt good for us and still feel strangely pulled back toward it. Sometimes what we call a comfort zone isnt comfortable at all; its simply familiar. In this episode, we look at the emotional patterns that keep us returning to what we know, how past experiences can quietly become permanent identities, and why changing our lives may require becoming comfortable with not having ourselves completely figured out. Most importantly, we explore how self-awareness can help us catch an old pattern in the moment, question the story behind it, and create enough space to choose something different.

SPIRIT IN ACTION: What’s Your Why? Engineering Well-being with True Wellness (00:55:00)

Today we follow up to a visit we had 2 months ago with Margaret Brown of Blue Zones, as we drill down into the same work from the local focus on up. True Wellness was formed about a year ago to explore and chart the way for better health, community wide, in Northwest Wisconsin, and Natasha Ward is their executive director. The decision started from a business need for better health coverage and costs, and became a pursuit of a transformed region with longer-lived, healthier citizens. While still early in the process, we’ll look at some of the nuts-and-bolts of the implementation of the kinds of policies and practices that make it easy to be healthy and vibrant as a community, less by laws than by conscious structures and options tilting the ground in the right direction.

Marks explains the disturbing new scientific findings confirming that anyone can access Georgia’s public voting records and use AI tools to uncover how every person voted at the polls, violating their right to a secret ballot. Marks discusses solutions that elections officials can deploy now to defend against the problem; how Georgia elections officials refuse to apply recommended software security patches; how voters can protect their vote (vote-by-mail ballots are not affected) and much more.

Think fascism is a European import? Guess again: Hitler and Mussolini copied American fascism. Before and after the Civil War, some Americans counted while many did not. Like the European models which followed, the South was such a system: Hierarchy of Anglo-Saxon nationalism, not democracy. And if you think the South lost the Civil War, according to our guest historian Joseph Kelly, southern nationalism and racism became more powerful after the war. Oh yes, fealty to the chief and hyper-masculinity are essential to fascism. Sound familiar in 2026? Kellys revealing new book is The Biggest Lie: The Prehistory of American Fascism. Give a listen if you dare.

TUC RADIO: Alex Carey – Corporations and Propaganda, part 2 (00:29:00)

Alex Carey wrote that the people of the US have been subjected to an unparalleled, expensive, 3/4 century long propaganda effort designed to expand corporate rights by undermining democracy and destroying the unions. The 20th century, he wrote, is marked by three historic developments: the growth of democracy via the expansion of the franchise, the growth of corporations, and the growth of propaganda to protect corporations from democracy. Careys unique view of US history goes back to World War I and ends with the Reagan era. Noam Chomsky dedicated his book Manufacturing Consent to the memory of Alex Carey. Chomsky says that the Australian sociologist would have written the definitive history of propaganda in the US, had he lived to complete his work. This is a fairly complex production with many voices, historic sound clips, and source material. The program has been used by writers and students of history and propaganda. Alex Carey: Taking the Risk out of Democracy, Corporate Propaganda VS Freedom and Liberty with a foreword by Noam Chomsky was published by the University of Illinois Press in 1995.

LAURA FLANDERS AND FRIENDS: From Deadspin to Defector: The Power of Worker-owned News Outlets (00:28:00)

The business of media is in danger ” but it sure isn’t dead. Many of the rising stars that were poised to save journalism like Vice and Buzzfeed have either entered bankruptcy or stopped reporting on news. There have been layoffs across the industry and many newsrooms have cut back on the resources available to journalists. But workers have also organized unions, including high-profile campaigns at Cond Nast and The New Yorker, and started worker-owned media like Hell Gate and Defector. This month on Meet the BIPOC Press, Laura Flanders is joined by three journalists who have lived through the struggles and are a part of the solutions. Alex Sujong Laughlin is a supervising producer and co-owner at Defector; Esther Wang is a worker-owner at Hell Gate; and Tammy Kim helped organize unions at Al Jazeera America and The New Yorker, where she is a contributing writer. How do they think about the future of journalism, and what difference does it make when journalists have the freedom to speak truth to power ” especially when it comes to reporting on policing and Palestine?

THE BRADCAST: 8/13/2026 We’re Paying an Unspeakable Price for the Cost of DOGE; Guest: Michael Mechanic of MoJo  (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Donald Trump’s White House vanity projects will cost taxpayers at least $900 million, raided from other agencies to prevent congressional oversight. Trump’s hand-picked Kennedy Center board voted to shut down the facility for two years, imperiling the survival of the National Symphony Orchestra. Homeland Security officials spent $464 million on a no-bid contract for 10 used airplanes that have barely been used since. A new GAO report confirms that Elon Musk’s so-called ‘Department of Government Efficiency’ (DOGE) did not save any taxpayer dollars, or reduce the debt or deficit. Mother Jones’ MICHAEL MECHANIC explains how Musk’s DOGE scam actually cost taxpayers money, and cost America dearly in heath, humanity, privacy, education, food safety, consumer protections, and world leadership in science. Plus Desi Doyen has our new ‘Green News Report.’

ECONOMIC UPDATE: The Great Shift of Economic Thought from Macro to Micro [August 6th, 2026 (00:29:00)

The rational approach is to ask which works better in an industry or to meet any social need: private enterprise or government enterprise. It is irrational and dogmatic to think only one or the other is allowed. For 100 years we have wasted time debating which is good and which bad. It’s time to move on. Let’s talk less about macro-issues like private vs public and more about the micro issue: what is the best way to organize enterprises (factories, offices, and stores): top-down hierarchical or democratic. That could bring much-needed change and improvement to today’s economic systems.

THE BRADCAST: 8/7/2026 Encore: This is What Kleptocracy Looks Like (00:58:00)

Encore: original airdate 7-30-2026. On today’s ‘BradCast’: A U.S. military base in Illinois really did record a sweltering heat index of 130F, likely intensified by ‘corn sweat’ from nearby fields. Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Thom Tillis (R-NC) slowed the confirmation of Donald Trump’s criminal defense lawyer, Todd Blanche, as U.S. Attorney General, but Blanche can indefinitely continue as Deputy AG. Senate Republicans approve of Trump’s unprecedented grift and graft as the most corrupt and self-dealing president in US history — by allowing Trump’s scheme to steal $100 million in taxpayer money from his corrupt IRS immunity deal and his $1.8 billion slush fund; disappear $13 billion in Venezuelan oil revenue and millions in corporate donations to his library; and much more. Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN August 8, 2026 (00:59:30)

Segment One

We begin the show with Jeff Mangan, founder of the Transparent Election Initiative. We discuss the Montana Plan. This plan gives states the option of avoiding the problems caused by the Citizens United ruling. States have the right to declare the rights of corporations that do business within their borders. TUC RADIO: Alex Carey – Corporations and Propaganda, part 1 (00:29:00)

LAURA FLANDERS AND FRIENDS: Claud Cockburn’s Legacy: Challenging Mainstream Media Ignorance During Nazi Rise (00:28:00)

Mainstream media has a lot to account for in 2026, but go back 90 years, and prestigious publications have often failed to see when things were so clearly wrong. In 1930s Germany, many journalists downplayed Adolf Hitlers ascension to power, with the New York Times writing There is no warrant for immediate alarmThe more violent parts of his alleged program he has himself in recent months been softening down or abandoning. But one young British journalist who, seeing what was happening, quit his job with The London Times and founded The Week, a newsletter that became famous for its opposition to fascism and the Western powers that were enabling it. His name was Claud Cockburn, and hes the subject of a biography by his son, Patrick Cockburn, Believe Nothing Until It Is Officially Denied: Claud Cockburn and the Invention of Guerrilla Journalism, out now via Verso Books. Patrick is an award-winning journalist himself, with a long expertise in the Middle East. And Patrick is Laura Flanders uncle; Claud is her grandfather. How did mainstream media miss what Claud knew about the rise of Nazis, and how did his guerilla journalism make an impact? And why is Clauds story so relevant now? All that, plus a commentary from Laura.

Encore: original airdate 7-22-2026. On today’s ‘BradCast’: A new report from the federal Government Accountability Office finds that the number of workers at massive corporations like Amazon and Walmart and gig employers (Uber, Lyft, Doordash, etc.) who must rely on federal food assistance and Medicaid to survive is skyrocketing. That means taxpayers are footing the bill to support the underpaid workers of huge corporations that are using their gargantuan profits to buy our elections. RICK CLAYPOOL of Public Citizen explains his new report revealing that corporate political spending in the 2026 election cycle has already shattered all-time records for corporate money in politics. In primary elections in Arizona, 2020 election deniers endorsed by Donald Trump secured the GOP nominations for top statewide offices; if they win, they will oversee the 2028 presidential election.
