EARTH RIOT RADIO: We Are In For a Very Warm Welcome From Global Warming (00:29:00)

You’d have to be, as Monty Python said, “DOWNRIGHT DAFT!” to feel welcomed by last January, the hottest January in 140 centuries. And 2025, so far, has offered floods and fires everywhere. Welcome to a 2-year-old global heatwave that could only be ignored by a dictator bully traumatized by a nightmare father and a variety-pack of humiliations in early life. And yet, the most healed and brave among us will find a way to walk into the Sixth Extinction with a heart full of forgiveness, evolutionary wisdom, good music, and a foolish absence of human pride. What better time to be a Fool!

DEEP DIVE CYBERSECURITY SHOW: How Social Media Started Another War (00:58:00)

Two nuclear powers almost started a war and both countries had such a problem with Facebook and Twitter that it even seeped into their mainstream news reporting. This is beyond terrifying and you don’t want to miss this one.

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: Under Water Now, Democrats Have to Become the Party of Change

(00:59:48)

There’s a reason the same voters were undecided between Bernie and Trump in 2016. People wanted real change. And in 2024, Democrats walked into a trap. As bad as it looks today, writing in Newsweek, today’s guest Matt Robison argues Democrats can win again. IF. If we recognize the widespread dissatisfaction outside of the well-read coastal metro areas. AND we become the party of change. Not status quo solutions, but instead now is the time for replacing an arsonist with a contractor. And listen to and respect low information voters because they have in fact been hurt. Calling them bigots is certainly the wrong direction.

SEA CHANGE RADIO: Pam Walaski and Crystal Kolden: Dealing With Extreme Temps (00:29:00)

As summer season starts to heat up, it’s important to remember that soaring temps endanger the lives of millions. Unfortunately, the federal government is not doing much to help. There are absolutely no federal statutes guaranteeing the rights of workers to legally leave their workplace to prevent heat injury (incidentally, as we discussed in previous episodes of Sea Change Radio, there are no federal laws protecting incarcerated people from extreme temperatures, either). This week on Sea Change Radio we speak with Pam Walaski, the President of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), about the heat-related health workplace guidelines her organization is trying to introduce into OSHA standards. Then we dig into the Sea Change Radio archives to learn more about wildfire prevention and safety from Crystal Kolden, a professor at UC Merced who’s also a former firefighter.

LAURA FLANDERS AND FRIENDS: “They Targeted Me:” Mayor Ras Baraka on His Arrest, Immigration Rights & Leading New Jersey (00:28:00)

They targeted me because I’m the mayor of the city, says Newark, New Jersey mayor and gubernatorial candidate Ras Baraka. In this tell-all interview with Laura Flanders, the mayor of the states largest city discusses his arrest at Delaney Hall, a new private immigration detention facility in Newark, and why he is a staunch opponent of the Republican immigration agenda and Trumps assertion of federal power. In his tenure as mayor, Baraka has championed progressive programs like guaranteed income, reduced crime and boosted affordable housing. But new challenges lie ahead, as politicians like himself and cities like Newark face retaliation from the Trump administration. Barakas charges have been dropped, but the legal battles are far from over. He recently announced a lawsuit against the acting New Jersey District Attorney Alina Habba and DHS Agent Ricky Patel, alleging false arrest, malicious prosecution and defamation. If elected, he would be the first Black governor in New Jersey and only the fourth Black governor elected in the States. If he’s not elected, he is still a politician to watch as he insists on advancing forward thinking policy, especially in these tough times. Join us for that conversation, plus a commentary from Laura.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Time Machine by H. G. Wells ch.5 (00:42:36)

The Time Machine is a science fiction novella by H. G. Wells, first published in 1895.  To date, the book has been adapted into at least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It indirectly inspired many more works of fiction in many media. This 32,000 word story is generally credited with the popularisation of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term “time machine”, coined by Wells, is now universally used to refer to such a vehicle. (Wikipedia) The story follows a Victorian scientist, who claims that he has invented a device that enables him to travel through time, and has visited the future. There, he finds the human species has “evolved” into two distinct forms. Above ground live the Eloi—gentle, fairy-like, childish creatures, whose existence appears to be free of struggle. However, another race of beings exists—the Morlocks, underground dwellers who, once subservient, now prey on the feeble, defenseless Eloi. – Summary by Cliff Stone

Mikey Sherrill will face Donald Trump-backed MAGA Republican Jack Ciatterelli for the New Jersey governor’s seat. California Gov. Gavin Newsom in a speech excoriated Trump’s federalization of the state’s National Guard troops, describing the tactics as ‘authoritarian’ and ‘dictatorial’, and warned that Trump is now waging war on democracy and the Constitution itself. Salon columnist HEATHER DIGBY PARTON and ‘DRIFTGLASS’, of the ‘Professional Left Podcast,’ discuss Trump’s dumb, dangerous incitement of violence, where all this is headed, and much more, bringing context, history, and hilarity to these disturbing developments.

THE BRADCAST: 6/9/2025 Trump unlawfully federalizes CA National Guard to distract from his own ongoing failures (00:57:30)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: We set the record straight on what is actually happening in Los Angeles, where relatively minor, peaceful weekend demonstrations against Donald Trump’s new ICE quotas for arresting migrants are not ‘riots,’ despite cable TV or social media coverage. Trump is grabbing attention and abusing his authority again, by unlawfully federalizing the California National Guard without the approval of CA Gov. Gavin Newsom. The governor called the actions ‘purposely inflammatory, ‘trying to incite violence,’ and the state is suing to stop it. Trump’s weekend declaration is a power grab, claiming the authority to deploy federal troops in violation of the Posse Comitatus Act ANYWHERE in the country. Callers weigh in.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Time Machine by H. G. Wells ch. 1 (00:21:20)

THE BRADCAST: 6/6/2025 Encore: Legal journo Chris Geidner on SCOTUS ignoring its own precedents (00:58:00)

Original airdate 6-6-2025. On today’s ‘BradCast’: In Boulder, CO, a man was charged with federal hate crimes after he used a makeshift flamethrower to attack a demonstration in support of hostages held by Hamas. Dozens of Palestinians were killed near a Gaza aid distribution center, in an attack attributed to the Israeli military. Ukraine launched a massive drone attack that damaged military targets deep inside Russia, after weeks of Russia’s deadly, long-range attacks in Ukraine. The rightwing US Supreme Court declined to hear lawsuits seeking to overturn state laws banning military-style weapons. But the far-right majority overturned its own precedent to allow the Trump Administration to end protected status for half a million refugees from several countries, even while litigation continues. Veteran legal journalist CHRIS GEIDNER of Law Dork explains how the activist rightwingers on SCOTUS are twisting law and precedent to achieve their desired political outcome.

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Curiosity in Challenging Racism & Celebrating Juneteenth, with Monique Bryant (00:28:00)

“What about diversity, equity and inclusion is so powerful — and so fearful — that you would want to get rid of it all? That’s where the curiosity comes in.” ~ Moe Bryant How might choosing to be curious help us keep the conversation open, hold onto history that’s being erased, and find moments for celebration, even still?

Monique “Moe” Bryant was my teacher and guide when I took a course called Challenging Racism back in 2015-2016. I had her on the show twice then, once before and once after I’d taken the eye-opening, humble-making, ultimately empowering program.

Given where conversations about diversity, equity and inclusion are now, I thought it was time to have her back.

ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Pinned by the Past: Breaking Free from the Weight of Old Mistakes   (00:29:00)

On this show we are breaking free from the weight of old mistakes by unpinning ourselves from our past. Ever feel like no matter how much you grow, your past keeps showing up like an old playlist you didn’t ask to hear again? You’re finally moving forward – changing your habits, setting boundaries, maybe even feeling hope – but suddenly, wham, a memory, a regret, or a what-if slams into your progress like a closed door. I recently came across this line in a book that hit me right in the heart: I was a butterfly pinned by my wings to the canvas of my mistakes. That image has stuck with me. Because haven’t we all felt like that at some point – frozen, exposed, and unable to fly, not because we cant, but because we’ve been too tightly tethered to the past?

WHEN THE BIOMASS HITS THE WIND TURBINE #51: Becoming a Sustainable Engineer (00:29:12)

Nicholas Anderson followed a fairly well trod pathway, excelling in school, living a comfortable upper middle class life, staying out of trouble ” all of which led him to the engineering program at the University of Dayton. SPIRIT IN ACTION: Sustainability is the Common-sense Destination for Emergency Preparedness

(00:55:00)

Jan Spencer is guest-host today for the sixth time, sharing an episode of Creating A Preferred Future, equipping us further in anticipation of changes we need for a better future. Jan explains why anyone interested in emergency preparedness can “graduate” to an interest in paradigm shift and moving towards sustainability. Preparedness for unplanned disruption is a very prudent idea. Current trends in economics, social well-being, the environment are all on the descent and more consumer culture will only make what we already see worse in many ways. The logical goal of preparedness is sustainability. Today’s show also encourages the listener to organize a site tour in their neighborhood or community to show and tell how preparedness can lead to paradigm shift, and what that transformation can look like, with all its environmental, economic, and social aspects. You can track down many of Jan’s insights via his YouTube videos (https://www.youtube.com/@janspencer9492) and on his website (https://www.suburbanpermaculture.org/podcasts.html), and those in Eugene Oregon may be able to hear his broadcasts via KEPW. LITERATURE ALOUD: The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell ch. 54 & Appendix (00:28:31) Clearly frustrated at the refusal of his contemporaries to recognise the iniquity of society, Tressell’s cast of hypocritical Christians, exploitative capitalists and corrupt councillors provide a backdrop for his main target — the workers who think that a better life is “not for the likes of them”. Hence the title of the book; Tressell paints the workers as “philanthropists” who throw themselves into back-breaking work for poverty wages in order to generate profit for their masters. The hero of the book, Frank Owen, is a socialist who believes that the capitalist system is the real source of the poverty he sees all around him. In vain he tries to convince his fellow workers of his world view, but finds that their education has trained them to distrust their own thoughts and to rely on those of their “betters”. Much of the book consists of conversations between Owen and the others, or more often of lectures by Owen in the face of their jeering; this was presumably based on Tressell’s own experiences. THE BRADCAST: 5/30/2025 Encore: Climate scientist Dr. Peter Gleick on impacts of Trump science ‘censorship’ on national security (00:58:00)

Encore: original airdate 5-21-2025. On today’s ‘BradCast’: The Trump Administration blatantly defied court orders prohibiting the deportation of migrants to third countries they are not from. Newly uncovered documents reveal that Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard’s chief of staff worked to manipulate the conclusions of a national intelligence analysis that contradicted Donald Trump’s lies about Venezuelan migrants, which were used to justify his unlawful invocation of the Alien Enemies Act. A new investigative report also debunked the Trump Administration’s false claims that the deported Venezuelans were criminals. Climate scientist DR. PETER GLEICK explains how the climate crisis threatens national and global security, the Trump Administration’s censoring of science and environmental threats, the scientists working to preserve publicly-funded scientific data, and much more.

EARTH RIOT RADIO:  The Planet Earth Is Back In Town (00:29:00)

Like the Hugh Masekela song Bring Him Back Home, which helped free Nelson Mandela from 27 years in prison, the Earth needs to be loved and returned to the forefront of our personal lives, our civic decisions, and our hope for Peace. Give the Earth so much Love that the imagination of our home becomes where we live again. With the Earth as our leader, we can hallucinate back to what’s real. Imagine our way out of violent products. Yes, the Earth gives us love and asks that we continue life, creating life that, in turn, continues to love and live. Life wants life to live. But the Earth is also powerfully political, giving us Love so that we have natural worlds agent of change. Love gives us the power to be radical. And here at the Sixth Extinction, we need to be radical. Oh, do we ever. Radical – right now.
