We discuss the flawed measures we use to evaluate teenage pupils and ask what the goals should actually be for college admissions officers? Are we looking for students to get good grades and make a lot of money, or become leaders in their communities and help spark thoughtful debate among their peers? We examine the shortcomings of standardized testing and grades, explore admissions systems at most elite” schools, and try to come up with some solutions to the problem.

LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: Not Wanted at Harvard? BIPOC Media on Claudine Gay, Anti-Zionism & Diversity in Education (00:28:00)

Dr. Claudine Gay, a widely esteemed scholar, made history as the first Black President of Harvard in the universitys 387 years. Many saw her tenure as a step forward for diversity in higher education, but today, her resignation speaks volumes about the challenges Black women face in academia. Gay faced fierce backlash this winter over the schools statements on the Israel-Hamas War. A politically-motivated grilling in Congress followed by an organized campaign to attack Gays credibility and intellect, led to her resignation on January 2. What does this all mean for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in education? In this timely installment of Meet the BIPOC Press, our monthly collaboration with URL Media, a network of independent media owned and operated by people of color, Laura is joined by co-host Amir Khafagy, labor and immigration reporter for Documented, which is a member of the URL Media network. We unpack the crusade against Gay, DEI and the lack of support that students and faculty of color, and especially women of color, receive from their universities. Also joining us are Zaire Dinzey-Flores, Professor and Chair of Latino and Caribbean Studies at Rutgers University, and Jamiee Swift, the Founder and Executive Director of Black Women Radicals. Tune in to hear what the media got right ” and wrong ” about this story.

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Poetry: Curiosity Emerging, with David Keplinger (00:28:00)

If you think poetry isn’t your thing, spend some time with David Keplinger. David is the author of eight books of poetry and is a professor at American University, in Washington, DC. We got to know one another through a humanities workgroup that was looking at how curiosity might be more effectively woven into the fabric of life at AU. He was a warm and profoundly thoughtful participant in the group, one of my favorites. His new book, Ice, starts with the melting permafrost in Siberia, which has begun to reveal the bodies of 40,000 year old animals, from the last Ice Age. The poems about frozen animals segue into poems about our own bodies under “the ice of forgetting” and how the light of poetry, for him, melted that ice away and helped him remember. “Poetry has been, for me, a well-worn groove to get to that place of curiosity and discovery.” ~ David Keplinger

ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY:Through Tinted Lenses: Navigating the Impact of Personal Experience on Perspectives (00:30:00)

On this show we become keenly aware of how our lenses may be tinted as we navigate the impact personal experiences can have on our perspectives. Which tint are you viewing your world through; rose, violet, jaded, or mirrored? Maybe you aren’t even aware that the lines you draw in the sand were actually started and passed down by someone else. Not unlike limiting beliefs, our perception of any situation is subject to ideas we formulated long before challenges arose. The good news is, as we accumulate more experiences, our perspective can evolve. And if were open to digging into the discovery process to identify the level of tint were dealing with we have the opportunity to push back on outdated beliefs and embrace new ideas and opinions.

RADIO ART HOUR: Lia Kohl, Negativland, Can (00:58:00)

This week we hear from Chicago-based radio artist Lia Kohl, from the Bay Area’s Negativland, and the krautrock band Can. Lia Kohl’s “Variations on a Topography” is constructed in stratified layers, each containing a recording of a full scan of the AM/FM spectrum from bottom to top and back down again. Tuning through the spectrum in the same place every time, Kohl charts a map of her specific signal, showcasing the geographic specificity of radio and drawing out its topography with additional musical sounds. Cello and synthesizer highlight moments of clarity and static, creating a counterpoint ruled by the dichotomy between them. These signal sweeps also offer a sedimentary view of time, capturing multiple 28 minute sections of what would otherwise be completely ephemeral sounds. The recordings, taken over the span of a few months, speak in various ways to the passage of time ” the weather gets colder, traffic patterns shift, wars break out. The signal, like a ghostly mountain range, hovers around us. Then tune in “Time Zones” by Negativland (1987), introduced by Jason Geistweidt. The experimental sound collective, Negativland, has been deconstructing media since its inception in the late 1970s. Originally comprised of members Mark Hosler, Richard Lyons, David Wills, Chris Grigg, and Don Joyce, Negativland makes an art of dissecting the sounds and images of mass media, reconstructing and recontextualizing these materials to reveal the hidden messages within. As Lyons notes in an interview with Rolling Stone, I spend more time in thrift stores than anyone. I like to collect a lot of old records, spoken word records, and we all collect tapes. Don spends more time recording stuff off TV and radio. Their breakthrough album, Escape from Noise, released in 1987 is both a commentary and a shout back at the sheer volume of media (radio, television, and print) that overwhelms our senses, a noise so pervasive that we passively accept its message. The media theorist Marshall McLuhan was fond of telling the story of two young fish swimming past an older fish. The older fish asks, How’s the water boys? and goes on his way. A few minutes later, perplexed, one fish looks at the other and asks, What the hell is water? Through the collection, manipulation, and juxtaposition of materials lifted from the media landscape, Negativland sheds a light on the deluge of media in which we find ourselves submerged. One cut in particular which provides a bit of clarity is Time Zones, a collage of diverse elements combining documentary voice overs, shortwave radio broadcasts, amateur radio conversations, automated time beacons, and talk radio call-in programming. From this mix arises the zeitgeist of the 1980s: fear of the Soviet Union, American exceptionalism, the militant standardization of time, the fetish of technology, and a somewhat Freudian preoccupation with size. – Introduced by Jason Geistweidt. The show ends with “Drink It Up” and “More Data” from Negativland, and then the song “Negativland” by the band Can.

THE BRADCAST 1/26/2024: Encore: New Hampshire Primary’s First Dirty Trick of 2024 (00:58:00)

Original airdate 1-22-2024. On today’s ‘BradCast’: Brad Friedman is back, with lessons learned from his bout with COVID. In New York, the second defamation trial brought by writer E. Jean Carroll against disgraced ex-President Donald Trump was delayed, reportedly due to COVID among his attorneys. After condemning Republicans who ‘kiss the ring’ of Donald Trump for political gain, Florida Governor and failed 2024 Presidential candidate Ron DeSantis dropped out of the race and endorsed Trump. Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is the last to challenge Trump for the Republican nomination for the New Hampshire primary. In rallies, Trump praised foreign dictators and said the US Supreme Court should grant presidents total immunity to commit crimes. A fake, artificial intelligence-generated robocall of Joe Biden’s voice may be the first known dirty trick of the 2024 election. The US Supreme Court granted the federal government authority to remove razor-wire installed by far-right Texas Gov. Greg Abbott at the southern border. Callers weigh in.

EARTH RIOT RADIO: NY Mayor Eric Adams is the Black Donald Trump(00:29:00)

He recently said the flood of immigrants coming here – will destroy New York City. And it’s coming to a neighborhood near you. Oh, really? And are they druggies and rapists? The migration, 200,000 souls in NYC in the last year and a half, is exactly what we need, and it is what we are. The meaning of the 22-story-high female jurist standing in our harbor, with a torch raised, is that we welcome the newest Americans, just as we were welcomed. The killers of our city, Adams friends in real estate and banking (and Trump-endorsing cops) may have met their match, because the shelter, food, and central heating denied the refugees by the city are being supplied by New Yorkers. We are remembering the pleasure of trust.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN January 27, 2024 (00:59:30)

Segment One

We begin with Lydia Kiesling, who has written about Americans’ treatment of children. Child care is a huge issue in the US, with no solution yet in sight. This is in contrast to European nations, that have policies to support families with children. 97% of child gun deaths are in the US. What kinds of policies are needed to turn this tide?

Segment Two

We then catch up with Scott Braddock, the Editor of the Quorum Report about Texas. The mood is set to “General Election as Kate Cox has been invited to the State of the Nation by Biden. We also talk about the latest winter storm in Texas, and the recognition that fossil fuels will not be enough for future storms. Lastly we go to the seemingly endless border conflicts and the USs failed policies. Governor Abbot has increasingly militarized the border and continues to demand increased funding from Washington. Governor Abbot is also determined to defy SCOTUS, and is in again flirting with secessionist rhetoric. The alt-right are referring to the incoming refugees as an invasion force but refuse to pass any immigration bills, in part because they fear they would help Biden.

Since they dont threaten US interests, people rarely think of India. But do we really want to do business with them?

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN January 26, 2024  (00:58:00)

Part 1:

We talk with Scott Braddock, the Editor of the Quorum Report about Texas. The mood is in “general election” mode. Kate Cox has been invited to the State of the Nation by Biden. We talk about the latest winter storm in Texas, and the recognition that fossil fuels will not be enough for future storms. The border is becoming increasingly militarized. Abbot is determined to defy SCOTUS, and the mood is secessionist. The right wingers are referring to “invasion”, but refuse to pass any immigration bills, because they might help Biden.

Part 2:

We talk with Bill Curry and Laura Jedeed. We discuss the polls, and the Democrats are slightly trailing. Republicans have no solutions, only one=word slogans. Democrats have proposed solutions that need more explanations. Messaging is a problem. We discuss price gouging by pharmaceutical companies, by food suppliers, and others. The perception is of high inflation, however. We discuss how much of the political action is actually taking place at state level, rather than the federal level. The federal government seems paralyzed by the inaction of the House, the disorganization of the Republicans, and interference by Trump operatives.

GROWING GREENER: Restoring the Canopy of an Olmsted Masterpiece (00:29:00)

Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, one of Frederick Law Olmsted’s greatest masterpieces, was failing by 1989 when Joseph Doccola signed on to restore its tree canopy. Over the next decade he replanted lost trees, matching adapted native species to each site, helping to turn Prospect Park into a pioneering example for urban parks across the United States.

TUC RADIO:Israel’s War on Gaza waged from Dec. 27/2008 to Jan. 18/2009 (00:28:57)

TUC Radio Archive –

The story of an international campaign to bring aid to Gaza and break the blockade is inspiring at this time – and here is the audio from a film I made of a talk given by George Galloway in Berkeley, CA, in 2009.

Israels war on Gaza from Dec 27, 2008 to Jan 18, 2009, made more than 100,000 people homeless. Both Israel and Egypt had closed the borders to Gaza, preventing all aid from coming in. British Member of Parliament George Galloway broke the siege of Gaza with a 2 mile long humanitarian aid convoy in early 2009. They entered through the Rafah gate on the Gaza/Egypt border. The same gate that is still used to control traffic to and from Gaza in 2024.

The first convoy drove in on March 9, 2009 with over 200 vehicles intended for use in Gaza. Among these were a fire engine donated by the British Fire Brigades Union, twelve ambulances, a fishing boat and trucks full of medicines, tools, clothes, blankets and gifts for children. At the end of May, 2009, the Middle East Childrens Alliance in Berkeley, CA, held a fundraiser with the British Member of Parliament George Galloway. They invited me to record the event. Here are excerpts from my radio program:

SEA CHANGE RADIO: Daniel Kammen: The Perils of Deep-Sea Mining (00:29:00)

Most of us have never been there but according to a quick Google search, some of the things you might see at the bottom of the ocean include sea spiders, tube worms, and something called a blob sculpin. Add to that list: heavy equipment for mining rare earth minerals like cobalt and manganese. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak with Daniel Kammen, an energy professor at the University of California at Berkeley, about deep-sea mining. We learn about this segment of the extraction industry, consider the environmental hazards, and examine why it’s largely unnecessary. We also take a look at the promise of growing rare minerals like perovskites in laboratories, and discuss the recent Sunnylands Climate Agreement between the U.S. and China.

LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: How to Fortify Democracy in 2024: A Citizens Guide by Sam Daley-Harris   (00:28:00)

Civic courage ” what does it look like and how can more of us embody it? In the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election, a study by Pew Research highlights a concerning trend among Americans: nearly two-thirds feel exhausted, 55% express anger, and a mere 10% report feeling hopeful about politics. Our guest Sam Daley-Harris believes we need advocacy organizations to train individuals to take bold actions ” the sort that have an impact and leave volunteers feeling empowered and transformed. Daley-Harris is the founder of the anti-poverty lobby RESULTS in 1980 and Civic Courage in 2012. Jimmy Carter hailed the first edition of his book, “Reclaiming Our Democracy: Every Citizens Guide to Transformational Advocacy,” as a roadmap for global involvement in shaping a better future. Kirkus Reviews praises the updated 2024 edition as “A handbook for aspiring activists that readers will find to be both inspiring and practical.” A conversation to kick off election year, Daley-Harris suggests how to head off despair, and Laura shares some closing comments on citizenship and spaceships. ECONOMIC UPDATE: Corporations vs Democracy (00:29:00)

In this week’s show, Prof. Wolff analyzes the corporation. It stands as a basic institution blocking real democracy in our society. The corporation’s structure and operations empower and enrich a tiny social minority at the expense of the people’s wealth and democratic power. Like the critiques of slave plantations and feudal manors that preceded the disappearance of those systems, the growing critique of capitalism reflects but also informs critical social movements now.

RADIO ART HOUR: Jasmina Al-Qaisi (00:58:00)

“Homoniememorimorph” by Jasmina Al-Qaisi, introduced by Jos Alejandro Rivera, is featured today. Originally performed in 2020 for Anybody out there?! (100 Days of Radio in Germany) at D21 Artspace in Leipzig, Germany, Homoniememorimorph was a live radio experiment using auto-archival methods crafted on the go. Jasmina Al-Qaisi describes the radio action, of which she has excerpted and edited, as an ongoing text writing method with, and for voice, where she re-writes her memory by crossing bridges between words. “Homonimemoriorph,” an invented word of a longer series of invented words by the artist, sonically and visually resembles other words. It is a manifestation of misspelled speaking, and a practice of Al-Qaisi as a poet, artist and radio maker. In the piece, she says the invented word is used to define the words that I feel fit together, and that stands for me, being here taking over talking over the radio; trying to re-order my memoriesto envision some sort of agency on what our memory is. “Homonimemoriorph” casts a wide net which allows Al-Qaisis words to create and pass through multiple forms and meanings depending on what associations the listener makes. The improvised nature of the piece often results in overtly confessional moments that transform ordinary approaches to what is considered useful or important information. The first public instance of this project was streamed over internet radio, and broadcast on Radio Corax 95.9 FM and UKW 87.5; the latter, covering the vicinity of D21 Artspace. Due to an un-planned delay in her headphones, Al-Qaisi’s voice, thinking, and as a result, the conversation with herself, was forced to slow down. Navigating this live radio time stretch, she spoke while sitting before a table of tiny, misplaced objects she gathered over the span of 15 years. They included scrap papers of invented words and poems, stones, shells, and pieces of metal items. As Al-Qaisi reflected on these objects, she re-wrote the importance they seemed to hold for her, and combined these new histories with samples of YouTube glitches that included insect, animal, and planet sounds, and samples of her friends attempting to pronounce homonimemorimorph.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 1/22/24 (00:55:39)

On the Show: Pathetic 2024 Republican primary candidate Ron DeSantis ends his campaign in shame with a fake Winston Churchill quote, immediately endorsing Donald Trump. The Ron DeSantis campaign was clearly in shambles for weeks, and an interview earlier this weekend reinforced that his campaign was imminently ending. Failed former President Donald Trump suffers a scary cognitive failure during a rally in Concord, New Hampshire during which he is visibly disoriented and blames Nikki Haley for January 6 Washington DC security. 2024 Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley suddenly jumps on the Donald Trump dementia situation after Trump blames her for January 6 Washington DC security failures. Nikki Haley is finally attacking Donald Trump, but is it too little too late to make a difference? MAGA attendees at Donald Trump’s rally in Manchester, New Hampshire head for the exits as Donald Trump struggles to speak. Failed former President Donald Trump admits that his latest nickname for Nikki Haley, “Nimbra,” is xenophobic and rooted in her Indian ethnicity. Republicans are increasingly panicking about the 2024 election as they realize they have no accomplishments to speak of. Joe Tacopina, one of Donald Trump’s lawyers, quits in the middle of major trials and gives an interview to Al Sharpton during which he explains nothing about his decision. New polling shows that only 20% of the country would vote for Trump over Biden if Trump were convicted of crimes. Veteran media critic DAN FROOMKIN of Press Watch discusses the ‘intense internal pressure to defend democracy’ that newsrooms are facing in 2024, how they can better serve the public by dropping ‘horse race’ coverage of politics that obscures the high stakes of the 2024 election, some encouraging signs, and much more. Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN January 20, 2024 (00:59:00)

Segment One

We begin with Laura Belin about the Iowa caucuses, and Trump’s win. Turnout was low, about 110,000 thousand people turned out. Weather was very cold, though Trump workers drove people to the caucus sites. Trump’s victory due to older, less educated voters. DeSantis placed second and Haley third. We also discussed a recent ruling in an Iowa book ban which was overruled by Judge Loker for over-broad language in the bill.

Segment Two

We then talk with Bill Curry and Robert Hennelly. We discuss the importance of religious organizations, and how they have changed in recent time. Televangelists have polluted religious messages. For the MAGATs, God is Trump, and Democracy is Fascism. It is expected that now the GOP has successfully attacked legal abortion, they are pivoting to concentrate on immigration. Not to solve the problem, but to keep people angry about it. Immigrants are strong on values that support our society: Faith, family, work. Instead, they are being vilified. No one ever said: “i lost my fruit/vegetable picking job to an immigrant.” Businesses are silent on this issue, though they will be hurt by the lack of labor they will lose.

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: The Supreme Court is Broken: How Can We Fix it?    (00:57:32)

They’re not supposed to be an arm of either political party. The word supreme means above it all but that’s not what we’ve got in 2024. The majority often contrives constitutional reasons to impose a right wing agenda. How can we fix it? On this show, Washington Monthly editor Rob Wolfe posits that perhaps the SupCo is supposed to be a ballast but it is hardly that. We are not powerless, though. Wolfe cites legal scholars ideas for restoring its legitimacy.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN January 19, 2024 (00:58:00)

Part 1:

We speak with Scott Braddock, Editor of The Quorum Report about Texas politics. He cites that 57% of Republicans believe that abortion should be legal. There are no debates in New Hampshire. Trump’s court appearances are campaign events for him. However, there are no substantive comments, only the “tone” of the speeches he makes in court. In Texas, there are no real medical exceptions for abortion. Travel restrictions on women are being considered. There has been a large contribution from Jeff Yass to Abbott ($6M). Yass is a proponent of school vouchers.

Part 2:

We speak with Bill Curry and Robert Hennelly. ALAN WATTS: Alan Watts Opens Up About Religion (00:17:54)

This summarised lecture by Alan Watts is from the Alan Watts Library at https://alanwatts.org. The image of Jesus is owned by the church traditions and authorities. He has been moulded to fit the interests of the church patriarchs for centuries, so much so that the prevailing image of Jesus is now so far removed from what he truly represented. Namely an energy from the future who came to earth to bring illumination and knowledge to humanity. The reason why the Jesus/Jeshua personality came to earth was to create an opening or doorway to a different state of consciousness. He wanted to set an example of the possibilities that are available to each human being. He wanted to hold up a mirror to human beings and remind them of their own divine origin and the dormant potentials they carried within. The potentials for peace, freedom and mastership over oneself. The first part of today’s show is dedicated to discussing the many ways that Republicans rebrand Jesus in their image without fully acknowledging what Jesus stood for. This maneuver has caused many well-meaning Christians to ultimately vote for, implement, and support policies that are a far cry from what Christ really stood for.

The second part of today’s show is spent discussing the statement we’ve all heard before “Go back to Africa!” We ended up with a thread and we felt compelled to share, and discuss so that you will know how to challenge this Eurocentric way of thinking. ECONOMIC UPDATE: US-China Decoupling Myth (00:29:00)

The so-called “decoupling” of the US and Chinese economies is NOT happening. Their economies are too deeply intertwined. The reality hidden by “decoupling” is just capitalism’s usual uneven development. Capitalism relocated investment away from its old centers (Western Europe, North America and Japan) to China, India, Brazil et al. The US cannot stop or reverse that process any more than Britain could stop or reverse it in the 18th and 19th centuries. Wars fail or worse. The only real option is mutual accommodation.

RADIO ART HOUR: Adriana Knouf, Scanner, Jim Ford, Pere Ubu (00:57:43)

Today, Lia Kohl introduces a work from Claire Williams and Julien Poidevin; and Tom Roe features 2023 radio art from Polish artist Jeff Gburek. And tune in Julian Hoff’s “Chants Migratoires.” The main feature today is “Oscillations” created by Claire Williams and Julien Poidev in (2021), and introduced by Lia Kohl. “Oscillations” is a live sonic performance for radio that uses our Ethernet lines and communicating machines as a canal to interact with the electromagnetic waves and vibrations that surround us. Sound is used to modulate space and time as machines, antennas, radios, microphones and body’s to stream these ethereal vibrations taken from different locations on the earth and from our atmosphere in real time. Sonifying the electromagnetic activity of the sun, meteors and radio echoes coming through the atmosphere, the activity of tweaks and spherics oscillating in the ionosphere, or tuning in the local radio station: these are some of the electromagnetic waves that Oscillations uses to propel us on an immersive journey into the invisible. – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Art Fellow 2023, Lia Kohl. And tune in for 2023 songs from Jeff Gburek’s “The Radio And the Sea” and “Still Life With a Question Mark” albums. And Julian Hoff’s “Chants Migratoires,” from the “Deep Wireless 9” CD from New Adventures in Sound Art.

THE BRADCAST: 1/12/2024 Encore: ‘Land of Uncertainty’: 14.3, Immunity and Obstruction, with former DOJ official Lisa Graves and Attorney Keith Barber (00:58:00)

Encore: original airdate 1-4-2024. On today’s ‘BradCast’: We are back on the air, for now, after being hit with Covid. We pick up 2024 with a surge of new developments in the multiple indictments of disgraced ex-president Donald Trump. Colorado’s highest state court and Maine’s Sec. of State barred Trump from the 2024 primary ballot under the U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment barring insurrectionists from public office. That and other cases critical to the survival of American democracy are headed to the rightwing supermajority of the US Supreme Court, including Trump’s bonkers claim that he has ‘absolute immunity’ for any crimes committed while in office, and a bizarre petition challenging the law underpinning the prosecution of hundreds of January 6 defendants. Former U.S. Deputy Asst. Attorney General LISA GRAVES, now of True North Research, and retired attorney KEITH BARBER deliver smart analysis and expert insight on these crucial issues as the 2024 election unfolds, or unravels, before our eyes. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

EARTH RIOT RADIO: Neil Young: Love as the Apocalypse Rocks Us (00:29:00)

The songs of the new release, Before and After, give us Love that we can use. The wars and mass extinction seem to mock the tenderness of Love, but the message is simple– Love is the only way to survive. Working with his collaborator Lou Adler, Neil Young tells a hundred stories with this record, some achingly personal and many universal. Neil and Daryl Hannah remind us that with Love, we can risk our life to save others lives, which is the heart of any revolution for change. W.H. Auden wrote on the eve of World War II, another time in history when children and families were attacked from the sky ” We must love one another or die.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 5/20/23 (00:59:30)

Segment One

We begin with David Faris. We talk about the definition of the word genocide. Coined only 80 years ago, the word carries tremendous weight. We talk about how the definition has been understood and whats been happening to that definition in recent years, specifically with the Israeli onslaught on Gaza and the charges of genocide being brought by South Africa on Israel as a result.

Segment Two

We then talk with Brandi Kellam, who has written about Christopher Newport University. in Virginia. This was a small commuter school, based in Newport News, VA. The population of the town is 44% Black, and the school reflected this demographic. The surrounding homes were owned and occupied by Black residents. When the school was acquired, by Tribble, a former congressman, it was changed drastically, as has the surrounding town. The town was “black dot” in a sea of white suburbia. Tribble began buying up homes to expand the campus, and changed the demographic of the school. It is now an elitist, overwhelmingly white and rich school, with only 7 Black faculty members, and small percentage of Black students. It is a ‘public’ university in Virginia, but behaves like a private school. Tribble continues as a putative faculty member, with a $500K salary.

THE BRADCAST 1/11/2024: Analysis of the 5th GOP ‘Presidential Primary Debate’ (00:57:30)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Special coverage of the fifth Republican 2024 presidential primary debate, the final debate before the Iowa caucuses on January 15 amid frigid, sub-zero temperatures. Former SC Gov. Nikki Haley squared off with FL Gov. Ron DeSantis in Des Moines, Iowa just hours after former NJ Gov. Chris Christie dropped out of the race. The Republican front-runner, the disgraced ex-president Donald Trump, held a televised town hall a few blocks away. HEATHER DIGBY PARTON of Salon and Hullabaloo and ‘DRIFTGLASS’ of the weekly ‘Professional Left Podcast’ join us for smart insights, fact-checking and snark on the debate, and what it all means (if anything) for the GOP, for Americans, for Democrats and — most importantly — for American democracy.

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: With Courage in The UN, Peace is Possible In Ukraine. (00:58:49)

A little bit of courage is all we lack. The big fish love the UN Security Council. It keeps them able to make wars. But the UN was not always toothless nor must it always remain so. Two badly behaved little boys really can’t be the only option for making world policy. Three are other equally legitimate interests. On this show SUNY history professor emeritus Lawrence Wittner shares little known but important potentials that are there at the UN.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN January 12, 2024 (00:58:00)

Part 1:

We talk with Scott Braddock, editor of the Quorum Report. We discuss the primary campaigns in Texas. Texas politics have become the “retribution” phase. Abbott is trying to punish those who have voted against the school vouchers he is pushing. Paxton is targeting those in the Texas House who voted to impeach him (60% of Republicans). Many paid solicitors are canvassing neighborhoods, supported by Americans for Prosperity, a Koch-supported group.

Part 2:

We talk with Bill Curry, former candidate for governor in Connecticut, and lawyer, writer, and former aide the Pred. Clinton. Laura Jedeed is an independent journalist who concentrates on the far right. We discuss the economy, and how the ‘improvements’ are measured, and why Americans do not find them credible. Economic problems are global, and cannot be blamed on Biden. What is needed in the US is a living wage, universal health care, and ways to support families with children. The middle class is shrinking.

Holiday Re-Air- “We cannot be both against occupation, and for it. We cannot be both for freedom, and against it. After 11 years in the State Department’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs ” the entity most responsible for arms transfers to allies and partners ” Paul quit October 18, over increased, indeed expedited arms sales to Israel. In this conversation, one of the first full-length interviews with Paul since his resignation, he sits down with Laura Flanders to discuss why he resigned, his concerns about how the weapons will be used, the unique way that Israel is treated when it comes to US arms sales and why the US approach to creating peace in the Middle East is clearly not working. US double standards and hypocrisy when it comes to human rights crimes, he says, are dangerous for all concerned. All that, plus a commentary from Laura on the war economy.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Call of the Wild – Jack London ch. 7 (00:39:46)

Jack London’s classic novel Call of the Wild is about a dog named Buck. Buck is living a happy life in California until he is sold to pay a gambling debt. Taken to the Klondike to become a sled dog, Buck must toughen up and learn the harsher rules of survival in the North. One of the first of these is how to deal with being harnessed in the same team as a dog that wants to kill him. Large, strong and smart, Buck toughens to his new life. But even the toughest dog can be worn down by constant work, and after 3,000 miles of pulling sleds, Buck nears the end of his rope. Cast away as no longer useful, Buck is acquired by greenhorns whose inexperience nearly kills him, but after being saved by John Thornton, he at last finds a man he can love. Then on a remote gold-hunting expedition, Buck hears a call emanating from the woods and speaking to the wild heart of his distant ancestors. The lure of it almost balances the great love he bears for Thornton, but events take him away from his old life… and into legend. (summary by Mark F. Smith)

ALAN WATTS: Stop Feeling Lost by Doing This (00:15:17)

If there is one simple question that bothers us all as human beings, it is: Why are we living? It is a burden on our shoulders, and we cannot think about it without going depressed or becoming sad, because simply we can’t answer it. We got blocked. In this lecture, Alan Watts talks about the game of life, how the answer of that question is: To play. To simply not take it seriously, to stay within the flow of life without having to be very strict and rigid about it. We have to take it as if it was a game. Because if we take it seriously, we will be forced to think scientifically, to predict the future, and be aware that any false move, would lead us to a fatal death, which is not the case.

ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Navigating the Unknown: The Struggle of Goal Setting When You’re Unsure of What You Want (00:30:00)

On this show we are navigating the unknown of goal setting when you’re unsure of what you even want. We’ve all felt the pressure and have been questioned at the start of any new year, What are your goals? What’s your plan? Where do you see yourself this time next year? Whether you pull out your journal, spreadsheet, digital goal app, or the back of a used envelope, creating goals isn’t always easy. Then they have to be SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. OH, the pressure! So where do you start? An easy jumping-off point is your career: where are you and where do you want to be? Your personal life: what’s important to you and what do you want to add or subtract? Personal growth: what do you need to adopt and what do you need to abandon? Soul searching is tough and because of that, hard to stay focused.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Call of the Wild – Jack London ch. 5 (00:35:05)

Smith)

ECONOMIC UPDATE: The Center Cannot Hold (REPEAT) [January 4th, 2024 (00:29:00)

This program begins by analyzing the political monopoly (aka “The Center”) operated by the GOP and Dems in the US: its organization and dominance until the last few years. The monopoly deteriorates as both GOP and Dem coalitions suffer splits and cracks opening opportunities for radical political shifts and perhaps new parties. The context of a declining US capitalism facing mounting unsolved social problems adds to the winds of change as do pressures to resort to repression. Wolff affirms that the Center cannot hold.

RADIO ART HOUR: Claire Williams and Julien Poidevin; Jeff Gburek; Julian Hoff (00:58:26)

Today, Lia Kohl introduces a work from Claire Williams and Julien Poidevin; and Tom Roe features 2023 radio art from Polish artist Jeff Gburek. And tune in Julian Hoff’s “Chants Migratoires.” The main feature today is “Oscillations” created by Claire Williams and Julien Poidevin (2021), and introduced by Lia Kohl.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 1/8/24 (00:52:59)

On the Show: 2024 Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis floats the idea of removing President Joe Biden from the 2024 ballot because undocumented immigrants have entered the country. Police are called on Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert after she allegedly hit her husband, to which she claims self-defense. Dictator-wannabe Donald Trump threatens to indict President Joe Biden if Trump wins in 2024. An absolutely soaking wet sweaty Donald Trump makes fun of Joe Biden for his stutter at a rally in Sioux Center, Iowa. Failed former President Donald Trump claims Joe Biden has dementia and uses drugs to get through his speeches at a rally in Mason City, Iowa. Cult member attendees of Donald Trump’s Iowa rallies pray over him and believe he was sent by God. Evolutionary biologist Bret Weinstein tells propagandist Tucker Carlson that 17 million people have died from the COVID vaccine, a claim for which there is no evidence. A study estimates that 17,000 people died as a result of pursuing hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for COVID, some directly and others due to not getting proper COVID care. Facebook has shadowbanned The David Pakman Show, putting the show into a “not recommendable” state in which views are down 95%. THE BRADCAST 1/5/2024 Special coverage and analysis of the 4th GOP Presidential Primary Debate (00:58:00)

Original airdate 12-7-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: Special coverage of the GOP 2024 primary debate, where once again, front-runner Donald Trump was absent. The four remaining eligible candidates who showed up were former UN Ambassador and former SC Gov. Nikki Haley; FL Gov. Ron DeSantis; former NJ Gov. Chris Christie; and scammy business dude and intensely obnoxious conspiracy theorist Vivek Ramaswamy. Joining us for analysis, context and snark are our tireless 2024 post-debate panelists and long-time OG bloggers: HEATHER DIGBY PARTON of Salon and Hullabaloo and ‘DRIFTGLASS’ of ‘The Professional Left Podcast’. It was a lively, if insane, affair that highlighted the brokenness of today’s Republican Party. The candidates raucously attacked each other, while Christie stood up for actual old-school ‘conservative’ values and finally took on Trump head on, underscoring the threat that Trump poses to his party and the nation.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 5/20/23 (00:00:00)

Segment One

We begin with Bradley Onishi of San Francisco University. We discuss the rise of the Christo-Fascism in the US, as exemplified by the rise of Representative Michel Johnson, the current Speaker of the House. We also learn about the Apostolic Reformation movement, and the “Appeal to Heaven” flag prominently displayed and used as a rallying point for Christo-Fascists.

Segment Two

We then talk with Charles C. Foster, and immigration attorney in Texas. We discuss some of the history of immigration laws, and how they are affected by circumstances. Immigration laws in the US are those written in the 1970s, and circumstances have changed. We also do not have a clear understanding of the differences between refugees and asylum seekers. Processing of migrants is very slow, and many do not see a court date sooner than 5-7 years after arrival and detention. Which is as inhumane as it is unworkable.

THE BRADCAST 1/4/2024 ‘Land of Uncertainty’: 14.3, Immunity and Obstruction, with former DOJ official Lisa Graves and Attorney Keith Barber (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: We are back on the air, for now, after being hit with Covid, but it is unclear if we can pull it off again until everyone tests negative (see: https://bradblog.com/?p=14885 for details).

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: 2024: The Positive Breakdown of “Rules Based Order” (00:59:37)

History moves in many different directions at the same time. On this show author and independent journalist Patrick Lawrence explains how as we begin a new year there is optimism beneath the pessimism. The failure of our many imperial policies is a very positive change. Old boxes are being busted.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN January 5, 2024 (00:58:00)

Part 1:

We speak with Scott Braddock, Editor of the Quorum Report. We talk about recent Texas political activities. New immigration laws and regulations are being passed in Texas, aimed at targeting non-white people. The border is militarized, and local police are often involved in harassing ‘suspected illegals’ . The governor has been pushing school voucher programs with little success. The Republicans are practicing the politics of retribution.

Part 2:

We talk with Bill Curry, writer and activist and with Robert Hockett, lawyer and economist. We discuss the recent trend of residents of trailer parks forming cooperative groups to buy the land on which the units sit, and leveraging the ownership rights to make the parks more energy efficient, by using solar installations, wind installations, and other ways to make their communities ‘theirs’ rather than a landlord’s. The dividends of ownership include economic democracy. We also discuss the need to call out any displays of intolerance. “Don’t tolerate intolerance” as a way of combating fascism tendencies.

SEA CHANGE RADIO: Namrata Chowdhary: Three (50) Is A Magic Number (re-broadcast) (00:29:00)

In the first decade of this century many of us learned that the threshold for keeping our planet healthy was 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide. Advocates like those at 350.org emphasized the need to adopt practices to help the earth stay below that number. Well, unfortunately, we earthlings have blown through that limit and are presently looking at 419 parts per million. But that doesn’t mean the idea of lowering our carbon emissions is moribund. And there are still organizations like 350.org keeping the dream alive. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to Namrata Chowdhary, the Head of Public Engagement at 350.org. We learn more about the organizations roots, examine some of the fights they’ve taken on, and discuss how they’re planning to evolve. We also talk about the corporatization of some larger environmental organizations and dive into the issues surrounding fossil fuel divestiture.

LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: Naomi Klein: How Disinformation and Conspiracy Theories Gain Power   (00:28:00)

Politics abhors a vacuum. Without credible explanations for the things that bewilder and exasperate us, people become susceptible to extremist conspiracy theories, hate and lies. So how does truth survive? In her brand new book, “Doppelgnger: A Trip into the Mirror World, award-winning journalist Naomi Klein, (author of No Logo, The Shock Doctrine, et al), describes being confused with Naomi Wolf, author of The Beauty Myth, as Wolf morphed into a conspiracy-minded anti-vaxxer during the Covid pandemic. In an era of all important “personal brands”, Klein became absorbed in the deep fake, double worlds surrounding and sometimes coming to represent her online. Right-wing conspiracies feed off Left-wing silences, she concludes. In this far-ranging interview from her home in British Columbia, Canada, Klein describes listening to hours and hours of conspiracist Steve Bannon’s podcasts, and researching doppelgngers in history and literature, in order to uncover why we have shadow selves, and how disinformation and conspiracy theories gain power. Join Laura Flanders for this charming conversation as Naomi Klein challenges us to overcome divide-and-conquer individualism if we are ever to tackle our real-life, systemic crises. And Laura shares a few thoughts on learning from our elders about the pre-digital age.

THIS WAY OUT #1866: Australia’s 5th Marriage Equality Anniversary  (00:28:59)

AUSTRALIAs first gay and lesbian legally married couples are celebrating their fifth anniversaries in January 2024. Of course, the march down the politically-fraught aisle was long and hard. The conservative agenda of Prime Minister John Howards Liberal Party saw making the civil institution explicitly heterosexual as a priority, and passed an amendment to the Marriage Act in 2004. Over the next thirteen years, 22 attempts to overturn that law in Parliament failed, while public support for marriage equality grew. Still, the administration of then-Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull opted for a non-compulsory, non-binding mail-in postal vote on the issue. The turning point came in August of 2017. Thats when This Way Out SYDNEY correspondent BARRY McKAY picks up the story.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Call of the Wild – Jack London ch. 2 (00:21:11)

Smith)

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: ScholarCHIPS: Curiosity with Social Entrepreneur Yasmine Arrington Brooks (00:28:00)

“When [you] keep asking questions and seeking answers, eventually you may realize you’re an answer — you could potentially be the answer to a problem or a challenge.” ~ Yasmine Arrington Brooks Yasmine Arrington Brooks was a teenager when she realized she could be the potential answer to a challenge. The child of incarcerated parents, with a passion for making things happen, she founded ScholarCHIPS and hasn’t looked back since. ScholarCHIPS provides college scholarships, mentoring, mental health supports, and a peer support network to college-bound young adults who have incarcerated parents, inspiring them to complete their college education. I’ve been a Yazzie fan for a long time and I wondered: what would she say about how curiosity contributes to the work of social entrepreneurship? “I rarely take things at face value.” ~ Yasmine Arrington Brooks

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 1/3/24 (00:56:58)

On the Show: Michael Fanone, former Capitol Police officer who was injured while defending the Capitol on January 6, 2021, and author of the book “Hold the Line: The Insurrection and One Cop’s Battle for America’s Soul,” joins David to discuss what took place on the day of the Trump riots. Get the book: https://amzn.to/48iqKCF

Infamous anti-gay Kentucky County Clerk Kim Clark suffers a final humiliation and is ordered to pay a $260,000 fine. Independent 2024 presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr hires a top anti-vaccine extremist, Del Bigtree, as his communications director. Failed former President Donald Trump posts a PDF claiming to be the “proof” of the 2020 presidential election being stolen. Unable to continue arguing that the Biden economy is terrible, Republicans shift to claiming that the economy is only good because the Federal Reserve “rigged” it for Joe Biden. Growing concerns about Donald Trump’s cognitive state make news after a strange video of Trump’s posture on New Year’s Eve brings up the specific concern of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Sean Hannity simultaneously argues that President Joe Biden is suffering from advanced dementia and that he is also the leader of a wide-ranging crime syndicate. Absolutely painful cringe at a recent Vivek Ramaswamy campaign event. Voicemail caller, furious with David, tells him he is wrong about his “pronoun thing.”

WHEN THE BIOMASS HITS THE WIND TURBINE (00:28:59)

When we give birth, it is generally with the help of a midwife or a doctor who has been through the process before and knows what to do and what to say to ease us through what is, after all, a natural process. So why is it not the same with death? In the not-so-long-ago past, death was a community affair. Friends and relatives would take charge of the process, assisting the dying, helping those that would be left behind ” explaining the process, washing the body, arranging for the remains. Join Annie and Jay Warmke of Blue Rock Station as they speak with Donna Baker, founder of Columbus Community Deathcare. She is an INELDA-trained Death Doula, hoping to revive some of the ancient rituals and practices that made the process of death a much more normal part of life.
