THE BRADCAST 9/28/202: Special Coverage of the GOP’s ridiculous second ‘Presidential Primary Debate’  (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Our special coverage of the Republican Party’s ridiculous second 2024 ‘Presidential Primary Debate’ is arguably the dumbest and funniest ‘BradCast’. The debate was hosted by Fox ‘News’ at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, and featured seven ‘candidates’ — former Vice President Mike Pence, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former South Carolina Gov. and UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, supposed businessman Vivek Ramaswamy and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum. Not in attendance was the guy with multiple indictments who Republicans apparently intend to actually nominate for the job next year. The subject matter was dumb, but our excellent special coverage panelists — award winning blogger and columnist HEATHER DIGBY PARTON of Salon and Hullabaloo, and ‘DRIFTGLASS’ of the ‘Professional Left Podcast’ — make it fun and funny. Enjoy!

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: How About a Rural New Deal? (00:57:48)

Liberals usually fail to connect and inspire people of the rural mid-west. And we lose elections. But if were true to tradition, we should take the lead in solving rural alienation. Our guest today Jessica Corbett explains a new report from the Progressive Democrats of America and the Rural Urban Bridge Initiative. Instead of the usual top down, this new idea is bottom up, involving local people, funding rural schools, and job-creating projects. This can work. And help save democracy.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN September 29, 2023 (00:58:00)

Part 1:

We talk with Scott Braddock, editor of the Quorum Report.

We discuss the governor’s campaign to institute school vouchers, and its failure to date. The distraction from this is the focus on the border, specifically Colony Ridge, which is a settlement of undocumented people. The GOP stirs fears of “invasion”.

We also discuss the money that Lt. Gov. Patrick received just prior to Paxton’s trial. It is not clear what conditions were placed on the $2M “loan”, and it was obvious that the trial was weighted by Patrick in Paxton’s favor.

Part 2:

We talk with Bill Curry and Robert Hockett.

We discuss the rulings in Trump’s trial in New York state. He was shown to be an obstructor and financial cheat. This could mean the end of Trump’s financial empire, because the Trump organization has lost its licenses to do business in NY. We discuss how this pattern of behavior by Trump was ignored for years.

LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: Before the Ground Runs Dry: BIPOC Media on the US Water Crisis   (00:28:00)

From the sinking lands of California’s Central Valley to the depleting aquifers nationwide, we’re at a critical point: Americans are running out of water. In this episode of Meet the BIPOC Press, a monthly collaboration between The Laura Flanders Show and URL Media, we take a closer look at the US water crisis that is affecting many Americans, and putting communities of color especially at risk. How are over-extraction and climate change impacting our water supply? BIPOC media outlets are bringing these stories to the forefront, debunking myths about climate change and uplifting solutions to this urgent issue. Joining us for this conversation are Warigia Bowman, Professor at the University of Tulsa College of Law, and Andrew Hazzard, Climate Reporter at Sahan Journal, which is dedicated to reporting on communities of color in Minnesota. Co-host S. Mitra Kalita is co-founder of URL Media, a national network of Black and Brown community news outlets. Kalita is also the publisher of Epicenter-NYC, a newsletter based in Queens, New York. How do we turn the tide on this crisis, before our water sources run dry?

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 9/29/23 (00:56:56)

On the Show: New polling shows that Republicans see Donald Trump as more of a “person of faith” than even Mitt Romney, whose Mormon identity is the most recognizable thing about him. Ken Blackwell, a Republican with a history of making it harder to vote, says that automatic voter registration actually takes away people’s rights in an unintelligible rant. Caller worries the term “social democracy” sounds too much like socialism. Caller asks about Briahna Joy Gray’s progressive purity tests. Caller talks about the health benefits of broccoli. Caller discusses Republicans’ plan to gut public schools. Caller suspects the existence of aliens would be good for Republicans. The Friday Feedback segment.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Time Machine by H. G. Wells  ch.5 (00:42:36)

The Time Machine is a science fiction novella by H. G. Wells, first published in 1895.  To date, the book has been  adapted into at least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It indirectly inspired many more works of fiction in many media. This 32,000 word story is generally credited with the popularisation of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term “time machine”, coined by Wells, is now universally used to refer to such a vehicle. (Wikipedia) The story follows a Victorian scientist, who claims that he has invented a device that enables him to travel through time, and has visited the future. There, he finds the human species has “evolved” into two distinct forms. Above ground live the Eloi—gentle, fairy-like, childish creatures, whose existence appears to be free of struggle. However, another race of beings exists—the Morlocks, underground dwellers who, once subservient, now prey on the feeble, defenseless Eloi. – Summary by Cliff Stone

Despite not even attending, Donald Trump easily wins the 2nd Republican presidential debate, as the debate itself becomes a farcical reality show not useful to any of the candidates who attended. California Governor Gavin Newsom is in the spin room after the second Republican debate and destroys everyone. Failed former President Donald Trump gives a fake, staged speech supposedly supporting striking UAW workers at a non-union factory with non-autoworkers holding fake signs. Republican Congressman Jason Smith does not like it when NBC reporter Ryan Nobles explains to him that the supposed wrongdoing by Joe Biden allegedly took place when Biden was neither President, nor Vice President, nor a candidate for any political office. General Mark Milley now must take security precautions for himself and his family after Donald Trump suggests Milley should be executed. Voicemail callers as David super specific questions about pasta and tea.

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Curiosity, Analogies & the Power of Less, with Leidy Klotz (00:28:00)

What if the best answer to a curious, generative question like, “What are all the ways we could…?” is “Do less”?

UVA Engineering professor Leidy Klotz, author of Subtract: The Untapped Science of Less makes the case to consider subtraction as a viable, reliable, and all-too-often overlooked strategy in a world that is biased to always add more. And in a twist I definitely didn’t see coming, Leidy takes analogous thinking to a whole new level of subtraction. “Analogies,” he says, “are one of the only ways to remove wrong ideas.”

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 9/27/23 (00:55:13)

On the Show: President Joe Biden joins striking UAW workers on the picket line and delivers encouraging remarks to them. California doubles taxes on guns and ammunition to pay for school security. Failed former President Donald Trump absolutely loses his mind over a judge’s ruling that his business has to close. Liberal Fox News host Jessica Tarlov brings up Donald Trump’s cognitive glitches from the last two weeks and her right-wing co-hosts are not happy. 2024 Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign is collapsing as he has now fallen behind Nikki Haley in recent polling. Fox News slashes ad prices for tonight’s second Republican presidential debate as advertisers and viewers both seem increasingly uninterested. Donald Trump melts down, slamming Fox News as the friendship crumbles. Voicemail caller says David is deaf, dumb and blind, and that it is “obvious” that President Joe Biden “sold us out” to China.

I think of these concrete sounds (that are carefully selected for this musical composition), just like one would choose musical notes for a traditional score that creates deftly constructed cadences, counterpoint, motivic and rhythmic development, textures and colours after all, music is sound and all sound is music

THE BRADCAST 9/22/2023 Encore: John Nichols on WI GOP’s state Supreme Court impeachment threat; GOP McCarthy announces impeachment inquiry of Biden (00:58:00)

Encore: original airdate 9-12-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: Republicans previously railed against impeachment when it was used to hold their obscenely corrupt former president accountable. Now they are embracing it as a political bludgeon. A little over a week ago, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said the House GOP would hold a full floor vote before launching any impeachment inquiry in President Biden. Today, McCarthy flip-flopped, unilaterally announcing the opening of an inquiry anyway, despite the fact that three ongoing U.S. House probes and a five-year criminal probe by a Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney failed to uncover any independently verifiable evidence of any wrongdoing by President Biden. McCarthy is trying to appease far-right House Republicans who are threatening to shut down the government without passing critical spending bills. In Wisconsin, Republican state lawmakers are desperately threatening impeachment of a newly-elected state Supreme Court justice who they fear will overturn Republicans’ rigged, heavily-gerrymandered legislative maps. Journalist JOHN NICHOLS explains Wisconsin Republicans’ radical scheme to entrench themselves in permanent power, how they can cripple the state’s highest court, and how pro-democracy folks are fighting back to stop the GOP’s unprecedented power grab. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

EARTH RIOT RADIO: The Widening Gap Between Protest and Revolution (00:29:00)

When will it dawn on us that we must save ourselves? How many Lahainas and Dernas are needed to convince us?

Chase Bank, BlackRock, and CitiBank show no signs of backing off their trillions in toxins. Climate Week in New York City will have its inventive gestures, a few arrests, and bank employees distracted for a couple of hours. Stopping oil, though, will take a revolution, not a protest. Revolution is not just cultural, or pixelated, or a mile of marching. The gap between protest and revolution has been widened by consumerism to the point where we now find ourselves. Start by ignoring private property…got to get into some necessary trespassing! Sing with us!

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN September 23. 2023 (00:59:30)

Segment One

The first half of our Scott Braddock hour, we talk about the impeachment trial of Attorney General Paxton, of Texas. The Texas senate DID NOT convict him of the many articles. It was apparent that the whole hearing was orchestrated by Lt. Dan Patrick in advance, after Patrick received $3M from a group who supported Paxton. ($1M in cash, $2M “loan”). Patrick also communicated privately with the senators after the hearing, while Patrick was acting as “judge”.

Segment Two

We then shift gears to clothing and the relaxation of the clothing code in the US Senate. How do clothes influence political views? We also talk about the Ken Paxton impeachment hearing, and the way that Paxton is now framing the outcome as an attack by Biden. $3M seems to have bought the collusion of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick in producing the outcome.

MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR: Terence McKenna – Psychedelics in Human Evolution and How They May Help to Save Us From Extinction (00:59:00)

Terence McKenna was a mathematician and ethnobotanist, and a brilliant out of the box thinker. He was a very prolific speaker and author of Fruit of the Gods. In this fascinating presentation he talks about how psychedelics likely played a crucial role in the most major advances in human evolution, and how we are currently at another critical juncture in our history and how psychedelics may be the only way that humanity will be able to change its thinking and how it relates to the world quickly enough to avoid extinction.

THE BRADCAST 9/21/2023: Trump Terrified, Biden Building Back Better (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: New international poll reveals that solar energy is by far the most popular form of energy worldwide and polluting fossil fuels are deeply unpopular. President Biden launches the American Climate Corps, a green jobs training and service program for young people modeled after FDR’s legendary Civilian Conservation Corps. Former White House staffer Cassidy Hutchinson reveals in her new book that Donald Trump refused masking during the worst of the COVID crisis because it messed up his makeup. Trump is also reportedly terrified of the possibility of going to prison, possibly for the same reason. The Minnesota Supreme Court fast-tracked a lawsuit seeking to disqualify Trump from the 2024 ballot under the Constitution’s 14th Amendment, Section 3, the ‘Insurrection Clause.’ Listeners offer cogent thoughts on a previous segment on the 14th Amendment, and we debunk several misconceptions with some help from the handy ‘Myths and Realities about 14.3’ document, courtesy of the Constitutional law scholars at the non-profit, non-partisan Free Speech for People. KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: The Demise of Neoliberalism: It’s About Real National Security   (00:59:53)

What is neoliberalism, and should be be glad about its demise? Reagan, Clinton, and Obama all boosted neoliberalism. But Biden is showing that he’s on a different track. Democrats in the 90s moved away from FDRs liberalism only to solidify Wall St’s hold on our economic life and political power. In his new book, The Rise and Fall of the Neoliberal Order, author Gary Gerstle says he noted a Jake Sullivan speech, redefining national security to mean average people’s ability to live decently. A real left is emerging, Gerstle says, but it will be a long rough road.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN: September 22, 2023 (00:58:00)

Part 1:

We talk with Scott Braddock, editor of the Quorum Report. We have a discussion, first, about the relaxation of the clothing code in the US Senate. How do clothes influence political views? We also talk about the Ken Paxton impeachment hearing, and the way that Paxton is now framing the outcome as an attack by Biden. $3M seems to have bought the collusion of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick in producing the outcome.

Part 2:

We talk with Bill Curry, formerly an aide in the Clinton administration. We talk about the problem of selling Biden as a candidate. Trump is able to morph himself into whatever his audience wants. Why is the upcoming election in a dead heat against fascists? The changes that Biden has been able to make will not take full effect until 2026.

TUC RADIO: The ‘Slow Motion Execution’ of Julian Assange (00:29:00)

Chris Hedges is the former Middle East bureau chief of the New York Times, a Pulitzer Prize winner and acclaimed author. Craig Murray was the British ambassador to Uzbekistan and now is one of Britain’s most important human rights campaigners. Thanks to The Real News Network for broadcasting Hedges conversation with Craig Murray on September 15, 2023. That’s a date of great importance as the extradition of Julian Assange from Great Britain to the US might be only weeks away. Hounded by US law enforcement and its allies for more than a decade, Assange has been stripped of all personal and civil liberties for the crime of exposing the extent of US atrocities during the War on Terror. In the intervening years, it’s become apparent that the intent of the US government is not only to silence Assange, but to send a message to whistleblowers and journalists everywhere on the consequences of speaking truth to power.

LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: Naomi Klein: Tackling the Doppelganger, Disinformation & Lies (00:28:00)

Politics abhors a vacuum. Without credible explanations for the things that bewilder and exasperate us, people become susceptible to extremist conspiracy theories, hate and lies. So how does truth survive? In her brand new book, “Doppelgnger: A Trip into the Mirror World, award-winning journalist Naomi Klein, (author of No Logo, The Shock Doctrine, et al), describes being confused with Naomi Wolf, author of The Beauty Myth, as Wolf morphed into a conspiracy-minded anti-vaxxer during the Covid pandemic. In an era of all important “personal brands”, Klein became absorbed in the deep fake, double worlds surrounding and sometimes coming to represent her online. Right-wing conspiracies feed off Left-wing silences, she concludes. In this far-ranging interview from her home in British Columbia, Canada, Klein describes listening to hours and hours of conspiracist Steve Bannon’s podcasts, and researching doppelgngers in history and literature, in order to uncover why we have shadow selves, and how disinformation and conspiracy theories gain power. Join Laura Flanders for this charming conversation as Naomi Klein challenges us to overcome divide-and-conquer individualism if we are ever to tackle our real-life, systemic crises. And Laura shares a few thoughts on learning from our elders about the pre-digital age.

WINGS #23-23 Mother for Gays (00:28:52)

Kenya is a country where homosexuality is heavily stigmatized. According to international polls, more than 80 percent of Kenyans oppose acceptance for homosexual relations, and more than 90 percent oppose same-sex marriage. There are harsh penalties prescribed by law, insults like “mashoga” are tossed about, and violence – and even death – are serious possibilities. In the US, parents of gays played a major role in societal acceptance. Kenyan mother Mary Mumbi tells the story of how she came to terms with her daughter’s sexuality and has come to provide emotional support for other gays, to connect with the gay rights movement, and to speak out to family and associates – even. in church – about accepting and respecting gay people. She says gays were created by God, and that people who insult them may well have closeted gays in their own families.

PEACE TALKS RADIO: Peacemaking in Relationships Amidst Health Challenges (00:29:00)

On this edition of PEACE TALKS RADIO, we explore what the sudden onset or revelation of an illness or disorder means for a relationship, be it familial, friendship or romantic. This change can be incredibly frightening, bringing with it emotions like fear, anger, guilt and deep sorrow. Individuals in such situations may have to make a choice either to stay through the sudden change, or to leave a relationship that is no longer serving them or the other. But it is how we communicate these thoughts and feelings that is crucial in ensuring moving forward in a non-violent, respectful way. This applies both communication with oneself, and with others. Correspondent Julia Joubert talks with Adrian and Claudine de Villiers, a couple who have been navigating the introduction of addiction and Bipolar into their 17-year marriage. Also she visits with Dani van Zyl, a woman living with POTS and other chronic illnesses who is reckoning with the isolation that her illnesses bring. CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Curious Minds, with Perry Zurn & Dani S. Bassett (00:28:00)

Curiosity, say Perry Zurn and Dani S. Bassett, is a practice of connection: it connects ideas into networks of knowledge, and it connects knowers themselves, both to the knowledge they seek and — perhaps even more importantly — to each other. Twins, professors, and true curiosity connoisseurs, Perry & Dani return to Choose to be Curious for this delightful, multidisciplinary distillation of this thing we call curiosity, celebrating the release of their groundbreaking book, Curious Minds: The Power of Connection. As Dani puts it, the book ends up being something they breathed for five years. You don’t have to spend that long, but you will definitely want to inhale this transformative intellectual oxygen. Perry Zurn is a professor of philosophy at American University. He is the author of Curiosity and Power: The Politics of Inquiry and co-editor of Curiosity Studies: A New Ecology of Knowledge.

Dani S. Bassett is J. Peter Skirkanich Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania. They are the author of more than 300 scientific articles in neuroscience, physics, network science, and complete systems science.

Donald Trump Jr announces Donald Trump’s death on Twitter and also calls President Joe Biden the n-word as his account is apparently hacked. Failed former President Donald Trump surges to a historic lead in the 2024 Republican primary, a Ron DeSantis’ campaign is almost dead. Howard Stern declares that he is indeed woke, and right-wingers absolutely lose their minds. Donald Trump panics after blowback over his not-as-extreme-as-some comments about abortion, causing him to completely backpedal Radical Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert’s upcoming speech to the Texas Youth Summitt is canceled after she participates in a public sex act. Congresswoman Lauren Boebert may have committed multiple crimes during her vaping and fondling routine last week in a Colorado theater. RADIO ART HOUR: 31 Down, Anna Friz  (00:57:37)

This week tune in works from 31 Down and Anna Friz. 31 Down creates darkly themed, romantic performance work with an emphasis on sound design, imagery, and mood. The works consist of live performances, installations, live networked performances and streaming works. Ryan Holsopple, founder and Artistic Director, develops and programs interactive systems to create and control the performances. Here, their “Naomi, Hotel Room” is featured. Then Canadian radio artist, now based in California, Anna Friz is featured, with the 2023 work “Revenant.” It is made in two parts, exploring mortality, rot, and regeneration, using electronic and radiophonic instruments, and sound from below and above ground.

1: Outside

In the increasing heat and haze of summer, the days are long and hot and the nights insomniac. After brief, fitful sleep, the sun is a tarnished penny in the morning when it rises behind an orange haze of smoke and ash from wildfire. Stuck indoors when the air is hot and thick, other creatures find their way inside to take refuge with me: coming in along the plumbing, up the drains, in the vents and down the chimney, through the cracks under the door or the walls. Unexpected insects, worms and a lizard that dry on the floor, various arachnids running up the walls, a small bird, a bat. It seems I must change my approach to cohabitation: when the creatures move into my nest, I trade places and take to the airwaves or escape down into their burrows.

2: Revenir

The difference between the living and the dead is hard to discern. That which is dry and buried may not lie still, but move, resurface, rehydrate, transform. The dead gone to ground may yet pay visitations, or am I the visitor? Time underground enables metamorphosis of body and senses. The work was recorded in the mighty RP4 studios of the ORF Funkhaus in Vienna and on various locations in Santa Cruz, California. Thanks to Martin Leitner, Elisabeth Zimmermann, and Indexical.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 9/18/23 (00:56:19)

On the Show: Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace is again asked for evidence supporting Joe Biden’s impeachment inquiry, and is able to provide none, and then Congressman Michael McCaul also faceplants on the same question. Russell Brand is accused of sexual assault of a minor, in addition to a number of other sex crimes by multiple victims, and his denial is not exactly a profile in courage. Failed former President Donald Trump is interviewed by Kristen Welker, and it goes so poorly that there is speculation of Trump setting up an insanity defense for his criminal trials. THE BRADCAST 9/15/23: Encore: GA Coffee County voting system ‘breach’ continues (00:58:00)

Encore: original air-date 9-6-2023. On today’s ‘BradCast’: A federal judge ruled that Donald Trump is liable for comments he made in the second E. Jean Carroll defamation trial. Nonprofit Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed a lawsuit challenging Trump’s eligibility for the ballot in Colorado under the 14th Amendment Insurrection Clause of the U.S. Constitution. In the Fulton County, Georgia RICO case against Trump and 18 co-conspirators over their plot to steal the 2020 election, the judge rejected an attempt by two former Trump attorneys, Ken Chesebro and Sidney Powell, to sever their cases from the others, and set a trial date to begin on October 23. A critical section of the RICO case revolves around the Coffee County Breach, in which Republican election officials allowed MAGA operatives to unlawfully breach, copy and distribute Georgia’s state voting system software. The breach is only known publicly due to our guest today, MARILYN MARKS of the non-profit Coalition for Good Governance. Marks explains the critical phone call she received from one of the co-conspirators effectively confessing to the entire Coffee County plot, the ongoing failure of Georgia’s top state election officials to investigate, set new security procedures, or install security updates, and warns that because the state’s voting system software has been posted to the internet, the ‘breach continues.’

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 5/20/23 (00:59:30)

Segment One

We begin with an amazing talk we had with Amy Littlefield, correspondent on abortion access and denials. We discussed the options being considered by organizations that want to replace Roe, in light of the Dobbs ruling. There’s a lot of support for laws to protect abortion, including ballot measures and even Constitutional protections to protect choice.

Segment Two

We then caught up with David Dayen, Executive Editor, The American Prospect. We discussed the underreported, yet huge lawsuit by the DOJ against Google. The Biden administration isn’t backing away from one of its main policy objectives, like going after mega-corps who hold monopolies on things like search engines on the Web. Google is hoping you’re not paying attention, well get you up to speed on what’s happening and what’s the goal of the DOJ with Google.

His new book is A New Science of the Afterlife: Space, Time & the Consciousness Code. All of which demonstrate lots of solid irrefutable evidence of communication and physical manifestation from the other side, or the afterlife, as hard as that might be to believe. THE BRADCAST 9/14/23: True Tales from the Party of Crime and Corruption; Hunter Biden Charged   (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Humanitarian crisis unfolding in Libya in the wake of catastrophic flooding. New analysis warns that human-caused climate change likely to push the planet to 1.5 degrees Celsius warming above pre-industrial levels far sooner than expected, turbo-charging more frequent extreme weather disasters. Trump-appointed US Attorney charged President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, on gun violations that are almost never charged – – is this the ‘special treatment’ Republicans decry? Judge overseeing the sprawling Georgia RICO case ruled that Donald Trump and most of his co-conspirators will be tried separately from defendants who requested a speedy trial, amid a crowded calendar for Trump’s 91 felony criminal charges. New York City pension funds sued Fox ‘News’ for neglecting to protect shareholders by knowingly broadcasting lies about the 2020 election, leading to more than $787 million in settlements. Wisconsin Republicans offer an absurd ‘deal’ to keep their rigged, gerrymandered legislative maps. Kentucky county clerk who illegally denied marriage licenses to same-sex couples must pay them $100,000 in damages. Deeply corrupt Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s mistress prevented from testifying in his impeachment trial in front of his wife. GOP Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis enjoyed undisclosed luxury travel from wealthy donors. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: The First September 11th: 50 Years Ago (00:59:02)

Duly elected democratic socialist Salvador Allende is overthrown and replaced with dictator Augusto Pinochet. It’s not well known today, but listen in as, first, the stunning report of how America made it happen, written by National Security Archive senior analyst Peter Kornbluh, is read by our host, and then, from Chile where the 50th anniversary is being commemorated, Kornbluh himself explains what happened the days and months that followed. ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN September 15, 2023 (00:58:00)

Part 1:

We talk with Scott Braddock, dean of the Austin Press Corps, editor of the Quorum Report.

We discuss the ongoing impeachment trial of Atty. General Ken Paxton. The defense wants a directed “innocent” verdict, though 24 (out of 30) senators want to listen to further testimony. There may be possible Federal grand jury involvement. Opinion polls show Paxton’s popularity slipping.

Part 2:

We talk with Bill Curry and Robert Hockett about the UAW strike discussions. We look at salaries of auto executives, compared to the pay of workers in the industry. Several different strategies are discussed to provide equity to workers. The Republicans are trying to distract with the Biden impeachment circus.

TUC RADIO: The Environmental Impacts of Large Dams and Reservoirs with Patrick McCully, updated Archive pt.2 (00:29:00)

This is the second part of a program on the epic struggle over dams, displaced people and the environment, that I recorded for TUC Radio in 2006. Patrick McCully was then the executive director of the International Rivers Network. They are supporting communities around the world that are impacted by destructive dams.

On their 2023 website International Rivers Network dot org list 217 dam projects around the world that they have helped delay or stop. Globally the building of mega dam-projects is slowing down but the world is left with dams and reservoirs that are decaying and becoming a danger to people downstream. Just this morning, as Im preparing this program for distribution, terrible news is coming in from Libya: The subtropical cyclone “Daniel” hit eastern Libya yesterday and floods from heavy rains overtopped the reservoirs of two dams south of the city of Derna. Both dams were destroyed and the flood swept entire neighborhoods with people, houses and bridges into the Mediterranean. (Included is a 43 sec. clip from Sky News from September 12, 2023) Patrick McCully was then a member of the UN Environment Programmes Dams & Development Project. He was a co-editor of The Ecologist magazine in England, and is the author of Silenced Rivers: The Ecology and Politics of Large Dams. Patrick McCully joined Reclaim Finance in 2021 as Energy Transition Senior Analyst.

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: When You Are Curious, with Veronika Darwell (00:28:00)

As the new school year gets started, I’ve been thinking a lot about the important teachers in my life, the ones who left an indelible impression. Those special educators helped me see and, as importantly, they made me feel seen. They gave me tools with which to engage the world around me, exciting me about it — and me in it. No surprise: Slovakian educator and author Veronika Darwell caught my eye when she popped up with When You Are Curious, a children’s picture book, with delightful illustrations by Johnny Plasil. What I didn’t expect was that our conversation would take us to how teaching finds us, the magic of learning multiple languages, and the importance of representation and inclusive design. “I wanted children to visualize themselves in the future, as well as identify as they are now. ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Examining the Ego, Moving from Self-Importance to Self-Awareness   (00:30:17)

On this show we aim to tickle your ego, prod your self-importance, and maybe even burst that bubble of self-delusion just a little. Ego you say? What ego? Well, ego isn’t just a one-size-fits-all deal; it’s a complex, colorful, and downright funky part of what makes us human. Were gonna explore the egos many faces, from the subtle whispers of self-doubt to the grandiose declarations of I am the center of the universe! Whether you need to put your ego in check or someone else’s, egos play a multifaceted and important role in our lives. While they can sometimes be associated with negative traits like arrogance or self-centeredness, ego is a fundamental aspect of human psychology.

MAKING CONTACT: Toxic Tracks (00:29:00)

On today’s show, we’ll hear an encore of a show from our archives that first aired in April. We’ll be looking at the environmental impact of the rail industry and hear from people in two communities currently impacted by rail-related contamination. In February, a Suffolk Northern train carrying toxic chemicals derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, and residents are still recovering from the disaster over two months later. In Houston’s Fifth Ward, residents have been living with the dire health effects of creosote used to treat railroad ties decades ago.

THE CHILDREN’S HOUR: Falling Into Autumn (00:58:00)

It’s fall in the northern hemisphere and we explore the science behind autumn. Equinoxes happen in the spring and fall, and each year those special days give our planet exactly 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night at the equator. At the Chichen Itza pyramid in Yucatan, Mexico, a snake is visible climbing down the steps only on spring and fall equniox. We also hear from 5th graders at Eugene Field Elementary School in Albuquerque, New Mexico describing how perspective can change history. They teach us about the traditional fall holidays of Labor Day (US), Mexican Independence Day (Mexico), and Columbus Day (US), and how each of these holidays feels very different based on the point of view in history a person takes. Mrs. Allison Hawks taught these intrepid students back in 2014 for a Title 1 School Project with The Children’s Hour.

RADIO ART HOUR: Yvette Janine Jackson, Diana Chang (00:58:00)

Yvette Janine Jackson’s 2021 work “Test Flight No. 1” and Diana Chang’s “Falling Free” from Jan. 1, 1989 are featured. Jackson brings attention to historical events and social issues through her radio operas. Jackson’s work is inspired by early 20th-century radio plays and theatrical sound design. She writes, “Test Flight No. 1 is an etude for a series of compositions themed around commercial space tourism.” In Chang’s work, a curious repeat of the history of Asian immigrants, she focuses on an elderly Chinese-American woman left behind in an American suburb by a husband who wishes to return to his native China. More Americanized than he, her solitude proves a liberation. Told as a monologue with flash-backs to scenes from her earlier life, Falling Free is a delicate, poetic rendering of ambiguities: the ambiguity of the Chinese-American experience, and of human desire. An adaptation of a short story by the same name. Commissioned by New American Radio. Finally, we end things with Gregory Whitehead’s brief “Adioradio.”

THE BRADCAST 9/7/23: (Odds, Ends, Follow-Ups, and More GOP Voter Fraud (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Trump White House advisor Peter Navarro was found guilty by a jury on two counts of Contempt of Congress for his refusal to answer a lawful Congressional subpoena from the House January 6 Committee. A fact that shouldn’t fall down the Memory Hole of History: on the day before the November 2022 midterm elections, Russian mutineer Yevgeny Prigozhin flatly stated that Russia had, in fact, ‘interfered, are interfering and will interfere’ in U.S. elections. In the wake of Hurricane Idalia’s landfall in Florida, new reporting reveals that a radical new anti-immigrant law signed by GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis is hampering reconstruction. Hurricane Lee has intensified to a Category 4 hurricane as it nears the Caribbean. Yet another white Republican Donald Trump supporter has been convicted of voter fraud for knowingly and illegally voting in two states in multiple elections. A GOP state lawmaker in Alabama will plead guilty to election fraud. A new investigation in Coffee County, GA (home of the now-infamous breach and distribution of the state’s voting system software), reveals a long-standing voter suppression cabal in the heavily Republican County where about a quarter of the population is Black. The Texas power grid is stressed, and customers are being warned of likely power losses or brownouts.

Part 2:

We speak with Bob Hennelly and Bill Curry about unionization and the recent changes in union management and union elections. New elections have brought new leadership, and better representation to members. We discuss Vivek Ramaswamy’s approach to answering questions: he shouts down the questioner, and provides no answers. TUC RADIO: The Environmental Impacts of Large Dams and Reservoirs – updated Archive (00:28:59)

Jacques Leslie discovered when he wrote for Harpers that At the core of every argument about water are dams, the modern pyramids, generators of extravagantly apportioned electricity, water storage, and environmental and social disasters. Millions of people have been displaced and some of the most fertile land been drowned. In spite of their size dams are not forever. Sooner or later they will all silt up and become expensive waterfalls. They pose a constant looming danger to life downstream when they fall into disrepair or are damaged by earthquakes or acts of war.

A battle is being fought by independent scientists and those employed by the hydropower industry over the discovery that reservoirs behind the worlds dams are a source of global warming pollution. In the case of big reservoirs in the tropics ” where most new dams are proposed ” hydropower can actually emit more greenhouse gases per kilowatt-hour than fossil fuels, including dirty coal.

Since the recording of this archival program in 2006 there is good news of positive action. Jacques Leslie kept campaigning and educating on the effects on dams and reported in April of 2023 that: The Era of Building Big Dams Draws to a Close. In an editorial in the Los Angeles Times Leslie wrote that the era of dam removals has begun and reported that The Iron Gate Dam on the lower Klamath River is one of four dams that will be torn down to restore salmon fisheries. https://www.jacquesleslie.com/

But, according to this week’s guest on Sea Change Radio, John Stoehr, there are plenty of other pressing political issues worth analyzing. First, we examine the recent mass shooting in Jacksonville, Florida, including what it tells us about the white supremacy movement and how the right-wing actually benefits politically from these events. Then, we discuss whether the reversal of Roe v. Wade has placated Republicans or if it has just paved the way for restricting other basic freedoms like contraception. And yes, we still manage to sneak in a few minutes to talk about the upcoming trials of the 45th president.

How does the struggle for multicultural education and self-determination relate to book banning and the right-wing pushback against antiracist education today? In this back-to-school special, we look at the grassroots movement led by student activists with the support of some faculty to establish Africana Studies Departments and Puerto Rican Studies Departments at The City of New York, or CUNYs Brooklyn College ” one of the first in the country. Members of the Black League of African-American Collegians (BLAC) organized with other student groups like the Puerto Rican Alliance and the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) to force the implementation of the open admissions policy. These student-led actions in the late 1960s and early 1970s are the subject of the documentary film, Making the Impossible Possible, directed by Tami Kashia Gold & Pam Sporn and distributed by Third World Newsreel. Askia Davis and Antonio Nieves were part of the BC 19, a group of students who were arrested and incarcerated at Rikers jail for demanding open admissions and the establishment of the Africana Studies Departments and Puerto Rican Studies Department in the student-led takeover in 1969. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is a memoir and treatise on abolition written by famous orator and ex-slave, Frederick Douglass. It is generally held to be the most famous of a number of narratives written by former slaves during the same period. In factual detail, the text describes the events of his life and is considered to be one of the most influential pieces of literature to fuel the abolitionist movement of the early 19th Century in the United States. CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Compassionate Curiosity & Death, with Valoria Walker (00:28:00)

Some time ago I was at a STEM event for middle schoolers, talking about curiosity — in particular, their curiosity about death. That got me thinking: how does curiosity show up around death? Doula by Destiny founder Valoria Walker joins me to explore how choosing to be curious about death might help us acclimate to the inevitable — and how compassionate curiosity helps her in her work. “Empathy causes you to sit and listen to people — to help, and honor them. That’s what we want.” ~ Valoria Walker

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 9/6/23 (00:56:14)

On the Show: Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio is sentenced to 22 years in prison, the stiffest sentence so far among the defendants related to the 2021 insurrection. The Supreme Court will soon decide whether to take a case related to Donald Trump’s eligibility to hold public office again in the context of possible violations of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. Elon Musk, of Twitter/X, Tesla, and Spacex fame, is now blaming the Jewish civil rights group Anti-Defamation League for Twitter’s demise. The legal arguments being made by Donald Trump and his lawyers in court are so absurd that a prosecutor is asking Trump and his sons be fined. Former Fox News propagandist Tucker Carlson goes full conspiracy by interviewing Larry Sinclair, a convicted con man who claims to have had sex with former President Barack Obama. Failed former President Donald Trump explodes in an all caps rant related to non-white support, a new line of attack being adopted by many on the MAGA right wing. Major Republican donors are dumping Ron DeSantis as it becomes clear he doesn’t have what it takes to win the Republican presidential nomination. Theorizing about how the Donald Trump MAGA cult will eventually end. Voicemail caller asks whether blue states are “better” than red states.

LITERATURE ALOUD: Looking Backward 2000-1887 by Edward Bellamy ch. 28 (00:39:22)
Published in 1888, this short novel focuses on the education of a wealthy man from 1887 who, amidst the labor struggles and wealth inequalities of The Gilded Age, experiences a “Mesmeric sleep” until the year 2000 when he is awakened to see an America transformed by the gradual, non-violent evolution from primitive capitalist exploitation to an advanced cooperative socialism. The novel predicts the radio, the credit card and big box stores as the characters discuss the problems and illogic of dog-eat-dog capitalism and the superior culture of a society focused on the benefit of all rather than the enrichment of a few.

EARTH RIOT RADIO: The Investor Class Makes The Worst Parents (00:29:00)

So many young people come out of their very young years looking the polluter generations in the eye. They make basic things clear about survival and right and wrong. Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase is the most obvious of our climate criminals. We don’t have that many gangsters at his level. He puts his trillions behind the fabulous profits made by putting carbon into the air. He killed the Paris Climate Agreement. And now, after this summer’s science fiction scale disasters, we know our activism must somehow articulate what people like Dimon are doing. We haven’t done that yet. We need to OUT the poisoners. How? Well, the Church of Stop Shopping goes into the big Chase banks in Manhattan, and we dance on their desks….Do you have a better idea?
