LITERATURE ALOUD: The Jungle by Upton Sinclair – ch. 21 (00:26:01)

It is the end of the 19th century. Like thousands of others, the Rudkus family has emigrated from Lithuania to America in search of a better life. As they settle into the Packingtown neighborhood of Chicago, they find their dreams are unlikely to be realized. In fact, just the opposite is quite likely to occur. The family, naïve to the ways of Chicago, quickly falls prey to con men and makes a series of bad decisions that lead them into wretched poverty and terrible living conditions. All are forced to find jobs in dismal working conditions for their very survival. The main character Jurgis, broken and discouraged, eventually finds solace in the American Socialist movement. This novel was written during a period in American history when “Trusts” were formed by multiple corporations to establish monopolies that stifled competition and fixed prices. Unthinkable working conditions and unfair business practices were the norm. The Jungle’s author, Upton Sinclair, was an ardent Socialist of the time. Sinclair was commissioned by the “Appeal To Reason”, a Socialist journal of the period, to write a fictional expose on the working conditions of the immigrant laborers in the meat packing industry in Chicago. Going undercover, Sinclair spent seven weeks inside the meatpacking plants gathering details for his novel. (Summary by Tom Weiss)

To find out how people are fighting energy poverty, we visit southern Europe, a region that experienced a series of record-breaking, climate-fueled heatwaves this past summer. Today’s episode comes to us from our friends at The Response podcast.

Podcaster Joe Rogan says that Donald Trump’s Press Secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, was the “Michael Jordan of press secretaries.” A shocking picture of secret documents in Donald Trump’s office is released from the search warrant executed at Mar-a-Lago. The Republican National Committee is no longer paying Donald Trump’s legal fees related to the search warrant at Mar-a-Lago. Pennsylvania Republican Senate candidate Mehmet Oz puts a blood pressure cuff on a rally attendee in a cringeworthy campaign moment. THE POSITIVE MIND: Love and Trust: Why We Fear Closeness (00:58:00)

This week Kevin and Niseema talk about the fear of letting people get close to you. How many people really know you? How many people do you feel close to? Closeness is often a trigger for most people. What happens to your body when people get too close? Kevin and Niseema explore the common fears that consciously or unconsciously keep relationships at an arm’s length. The fear of being controlled, the fear of losing independence, the fear of vulnerability, all work to sabotage the desire for real closeness. This week’s show talks about THE REWARD of letting go of those fears.

THE BRADCAST 8/26/22: Trump/GOP, Biden/Democrats late-summer ascension (00:57:30)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The contrast between the two major parties, their respective leaders and their prospective near-term fortunes could not be starker. On Friday, a court unsealed a heavily redacted version of the lawful affidavit used to establish ‘probable cause’ for the FBI’s search of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in early August. It revealed disturbing new specifics about hundreds of documents, many of them highly classified, that Trump stole from the White House and refused to return, despite more than a year of effort by the National Archives, and kept in an unsecure storage room. The affidavit is the latest gobsmacking development in the multiple concurrent criminal investigations of Trump and his associates that have nearly overshadowed the extraordinary run of late summer successes by President Biden and the Democrats. Biden capped recent weeks of major accomplishments with a barn-burner of a rally speech on Thursday, detailing the Democrats’ landmark legislative achievements and unsparingly taking on Republicans and the former President, in no uncertain terms, drawing a stark contrast between the two major parties and their agendas. In a wide-ranging conversation, award-winning opinion journalist HEATHER ‘DIGBY’ PARTON of Salon and Hullabaloo delves into the major developments of just the last few weeks. Parton brings context and historical perspective to the massive new criminal scandal Trump has brought upon himself and the growing public backlash against the Republicans’ ‘very far right, radical anti-abortion zealotry.’ Parton also analyzes President Biden’s and the Democrats’ historic achievements and major policy accomplishments in recent weeks, and what it all may mean going forward into the critical November 2022 midterm elections.

ATTIUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 8/26/22 (00:58:00)

Part 1:

We talk with Scott Braddock about the trigger laws in Texas, which went into effect this week. Many women, including Republicans, are angry. During the debate on the ACA, Republicans’ position was that the government should not step between patient and doctor, a complete opposite view. But the Republicans have backed the Supreme Court, even though traditional Republicans do not agree with no exceptions. This may hurt the Republicans when Senators are up for election.

Part 2:

Bill Curry and Lincoln Mitchell discuss the effects of our very quickly changed climate. Is there time to address climate change, or is it too late?

We also discuss effects of a loan forgiveness for college loans. Should there be a different way to allow college to be available to all who want to go?

THE BRADCAST 8/25/22: Our State-by-State Fight for Reproductive Rights and Voting Rights (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The fight for personal freedoms and liberties, reproductive rights and voting rights, is going to remain a grueling, state-by-state slog. But that can change this November if voters fight like hell and turn out in massive numbers to allow Democrats to hold the US House and pick up at least two seats in the U.S. Senate, in order to reform the filibuster and codify those rights into laws. New evidence reveals the deep corruption of Donald Trump’s disgraced former Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, the front-runner to win a new U.S. House seat in Montana. Georgia Republican U.S. senate nominee and former NFL great Herschel Walker, despite lying about his past and offering inane, barely comprehensible comments on the campaign trail, is in an inexplicably close race with Democratic Sen. Rafael Warnock. Abortion trigger bans went into effect in Idaho, Tennessee and Texas. A total of 14 states now have eliminated women’s reproductive rights with few or no exceptions. A federal judge in Idaho struck down one of the state’s most draconian abortion restrictions. In Florida, voters kicked an anti-abortion, anti-gay state lawmaker and an anti-abortion judge out of office. In Texas, a federal court struck down part of the state’s voter suppression law affecting college students. The North Carolina state Supreme Court ruled that GOP lawmakers elected via unconstitutional racial gerrymandering could not amend the state constitution to further restrict voting. Arkansas federal court rejected a draconian law limiting assistance to voters. California regulators voted to phase out gasoline-powered cars by 2036. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: Why Do Americans Buy So Much Stuff?  (00:59:41)

A consumer’s republic was born at the end of the second world war. And though it was genuinely intended to be a tide lifting all boats, it has increased economic inequality and created isolation where public space once was central. On this show Harvard history professor and author Lizabeth Cohen talks about her book on the undermining of the public sector and the politics of mass consumption. The Consumers Republic came from top down, now she says change must come from the bottom up.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 8/25/22 (00:58:00)

Part one: A conversation with Harold Meyerson, Editor at Large at The American Prospect.

Layoffs May Be White-Collar Now, but Here Come the Blues Today on TAP: Ford signals a near-term downturn, and a long-term deeper problem.

https://prospect.org/blogs-and-newsletters/tap/layoffs-may-be-white-collar-now-but-here-come-the-blues/

Something that many people do not know: EV’s require fewer workers to make them, and also require fewer parts. This transition may adversely affect blue-collar workers, despite need for them to build other parts of the economy: new/refitted homes, other devices. New provisions will have to be created to make health care available, and new methods of funding school tuition.

Part two:

#RaceClass | Episode 8, Part B

2022 08 24

Outline

Race Matters Before Admissions

UNCs Legacy of Racial Exclusion | A Conversation with Dr. William Sturkey

1. Arnie Open Legislation restricting the teaching of race and racism in public schools and government entities has spread across the country. In an effort to respond, Boston University Law Professor Jonathan Feingold and The Attitude with Arnie Arnesen  are offering “Race Class” – a once a month course/conversation where listeners can hear what it is like to approach race and racism from a place of curiosity and history rather than fear and anxiety….In describing the foundational purpose of “Race Class,” Arnesen and Feingold note, “We know race matters. Part of this project is to make sense of what that means.”

2. Summer review: 6-part Affirmative Action mini-series

1. Our angle: how race matters before Affirmative Action arrives. IOW, what is the racial baseline against which Affirmative Action intervenes.

1. June & July: how race matters during & after admissions

2. August: how race matters before admissions ” IOW: how the past shapes the present.

1. Last episode: UNCs legacy of racial exclusion.

1. Our upshot: over its history, UNC has invested more in racial exclusion than racial inclusion. Not even close.

2. Today: UNC historian Dr. William Sturkey is here to help us dive deeper into the convo.

3. Dr. Sturkey bio: William Sturkey is an associate professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he teaches classes on Modern American History. He is the author of Hattiesburg: An American City in Black and White, and a variety of public writing that has appeared in the New York Times, The Atlantic, Washington Post, and other venues

3. Qs for Dr. Sturkey

1. You’re a historian. Professionally and personally, how do you think about the relationship between the past and the present?

2. As an historical matter, what are two or three moments, events, or pieces of UNCs racial history that we should know about but probably don’t?

3. Can you place those moments into the broader historical / social context. Put differently, was UNCs troubled history with racial exclusion unique or consistent with a broader societal pattern/phenomenon?

4. In past #RaceClass episodes, we’ve asked the provocative question: In what year was the United States no longer a racist society? Rather than generate a specific answer, the question pushes us to not simply take for granted that we are somehow post-racial. I’ll ask a similar question but shift the focus UNC. In what year did UNC become a post-racial campus? Put differently, when did UNC overcome its history of racial exclusion and racial hostility to people of color?

5. Assuming UNC still has work to do, what is necessary for the university to become a truly racially inclusive institution?

6. One thing we discuss on #RaceClass is that often, as a society, were not even asking the right question when it comes to issues of race and racism. Returning to UNCs relationship with race and racism today, are there questions we should be asking but we often overlook?

COOL SOLUTIONS: Fox in the Henhouse (00:28:00)

For decades university departments, liberally lubricated with fossil fuel dollars, have been turning out research that adds a scholarly veneer to the industry’s policy agenda. First that was opposing the regulation of oil and gas; now it’s promoting carbon capture so they can keep selling their product. Students and faculty are shining a light on fossil fuel infiltration of academia and organizing to ban fossil fuel dollars from climate and energy research. We talk with undergrads and PhD students at Stanford and George Washington University about their research showing how fossil fueled research is skewing climate policy and how they are organizing to stop it.

LOPATE AT LARGE: An Inconvenient Apocalypse (00:50:33)

Robert Jensen co-authors of An Inconvenient Apocalypse argues that humanity’s future will be defined not by expansion but by contraction. For decades, our world has understood that we are on the brink of an apocalypse and yet the only implemented solutions have been small and convenient, feel-good initiatives that avoid unpleasant truths about the root causes of our impending disaster. On this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large, Jensen examines how geographic determinism shaped our past and led to today’s social injustice, consumerist culture, and high-energy/high-technology dystopias. Jensen weaves a secular reading of theological concepts “the prophetic, the apocalyptic, a saving remnant, and grace” to chart a collective, realistic path for humanity not only to survive our apocalypse but also to emerge on the other side with a renewed appreciation of the larger living world.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Jungle by Upton Sinclair – ch. 18 (00:27:11)

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 8/25/22 (00:56:31)

On the Show: President Joe Biden announces the cancellation of $10,000 in student debt for those earning under $125,000 per year and up to $20,000 for those who received Pell grants for low-income families. Republicans jump on the talking point that student loan debt forgiveness is unfair to those who already paid off their student loans. Republicans meltdown and panic over Biden’s student loan forgiveness, as it likely hurts them in November. Joe Biden’s presidency does a complete 180 with countless successes in the last two months. Sadly, self-destructive pettiness is plaguing the online left media space. Radical Republican candidate Laura Loomer sobs in a bizarre video while claiming she only lost her Republican primary in Florida due to voter fraud. Republicans panic as a Democrat has won a swing district by focusing on abortion rights. A disheveled and demoralized MyPillow CEO and Founder Mike Lindell says that every vote in Utah is fake. The Republican civil war grows as Donald Trump demands that Mitch McConnell be replaced as Senate Republican leader. Voicemail caller says his doctor, who is a good doctor, believes that Donald Trump is about to be reinstated.

THE POSITIVE MIND: Love’s Memory (00:57:46)

This week Kevin and Niseema follow up on the past two shows with Attachment Theory specialists Drs. Howard and Miriam Steele. Attachment Theory focuses on whether a child feels secure or insecure in their connection to, and “attachment to,” the caretakers in their life. This early relationship influences the way a person will relate in their mature adult relationships. During the show, Kevin and Niseema ask some basic questions to help you determine whether you were securely or insecurely attached in childhood. See the attached questionnaire on the link below. Kevin and Niseema also talk about research into “memory” and how our adult brains impose a memory on to our childhood brain. Statistics consistently show that the adult brain often creates a faulty “memory” of incidents that happened in the past. It’s as if the brain takes a photograph of a past event and then distorts or enhances the photograph. The brain will often create a faulty memory of what love looked like in our childhood. It is this faulty memory that we project onto our future love relationships. It is astonishing what the brain/mind can do.

ECONOMIC UPDATE: Recession – Capitalism’s Failure Invites System Change (00:29:00)

In this week’s show, Prof. Wolff defines recession and shows its relation to inflation and stagflation in their respective roles within capitalism’s inherent instability. Rooted in the structure of capitalism, recessions represent both costly burdens on employers and employees alike and also strong incentives to question, challenge, and go beyond capitalism. The economics profession has been unable to end recessions despite centuries of trying. The profession often tries to hide the capitalist roots of recession instead. Wolff concludes with how system change might finally “solve” capitalism’s intractable instability problem.

RADIO ART HOUR: Dmitriy Nikolaev, Andrea Sodomka, Gregory Whitehead (00:58:00)

Tune in three radio art works this week, one from Dmitriy Nikolaev, one from Andrea Sodomka, a media artist from Austria, and one from American radio artist Gregory Whitehead. First is “Happy Birthday Darling” by Dmitriy Nikolaev, and introduced by Karen Werner. In “Happy Birthday Darling” Russian radio artist Dmitry Nikolaev took on the challenge of creating a radio drama entirely through sounds, not using single word. He describes the piece with his Russian sense of humor: People very easily break human relations, connections and start to kill others who do not follow their rules. It’s a story about how love turns into hatred that destroys everything and kills everybody. – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2019/2020, Karen Werner. Next, tune in “Intimate Space” by Andrea Sodomka, and introduced by Jess Speer. “Intimate Space” was originally conceived as an installation for the festival Ars Sonora, Radio Clsica, put on by Radio Nacional de Espana. As is her usual practice, Sodomka spent many months thinking about, researching, and conducting interviews about the concept of intimacy and intimate space before beginning composition or production. During this time, she spent time in Tokyo, which gave her insight into cultural and contextual differences in the idea of physical intimacy and personal space. When the time came for production, Sodomka and her collaborators, including Helmut Jasbar on electric guitar, Heidelinde Gratzl on accordion, and Sodomka herself using electronic instruments, gathered in the studio, and were able to take time to improvise and play together to get a good recording that captured their expression of intimate space. Afterwards, Sodomka worked with sound engineer Anton Reininger to mix a recording in Dolby 5.1 Digital Surround Sound that included a recorded interview with collaborator August Black edited by Anna Kuncio, and a sound donation by Daniel Lercher. Sodomkas original plan for the installation included using mini-FM transmitters broadcasting from cars outside the festival venue and the audience walking around the cars with receivers, but technical problems led to a smaller installation of transmitters located in a room. The piece was first broadcast on ORF Kunstradio as a radio art piece on September 20, 2009, and was installed and performed on September 23, 2009, at CDMC (Festival for Contemporary Music), in Alicante, Spain. In the installation, audience members walking around the room created a new version of the work, their movements and the pieces of the broadcast being transmitted from various transmitters shifting the sounds throughout the installation. The piece was broadcast again on October 24, 2009 by Ars Sonora, Radio Clsica. In both its installation and broadcast formats, the piece references and uses radio as a way to think about intimacy and intimate space as something that is broadcast, so to speak, from individuals and extending out at various distances depending on the cultural background and personality of individual transmitters. Compositionally, the piece was also inspired by the sounds Sodomka could hear from her composers hut in her garden: birdsong, neighborhood children, and other sounds of the people and natural world around her becoming a part of her intimate space and compositional work. Distance, communication, and intimacy are all factors in this intimate space. Similarly, mini-FM transmitters can allow people to transmit a broadcast within the distance of their own personal bubble, only allowing those physically close, and therefore within the intimate space, to receive those messages, and taking that personal bubble of intimate space with them wherever they go. Radio creates a mapping between time and space, Sodomka says, transforming an acoustical geometry into a spatial geometry. – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2020/2021, Jess Speer. Finally, today’s transmission ends with Gregory Whitehead’s “India Alpha Mike,” one of his ongoing explorations into the fate of ciphered disembodies during their slow fade into the electromagnetic night.

CREATING OUR PREFERRED FUTURE: 2045 A Paradigm Shift Odyssey Part 1 (00:29:00)

2045 is a fiction story based on current trends, real life experience and places, plus imagination about possible futures. And, some good luck and good timing. The story describes a changing world in 2045. Gains have been made towards a preferred future, with a big help from a set of obscure articles published in a small circulation eco magazine in 2019. The author of the articles was invited to present at the celebrated Future Conference where he laid out an outline for paradigm shift. The presentation resonated, the timing was right, real social and economic progress was in the early going. But there remain challenges. Some interests at the time would like nothing more than to return to glory days of the consumer culture and their own power and privilege, when capitalism ruled the world. This episode is part one in a series of undetermined length.

THE BRADCAST 8/19/22: Media critic Dan Froomkin of Press Watch on corporate media failures (00:57:30)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The U.S. corporate media is still cowed by the radical Right, and still failing in their constitutional mandate to inform and educate the electorate. As we’ve long argued, it’s a mistake to buy into the political punditry of Conventional Wisdom that assumes Democrats will lose big in midterm elections in November. While it’s still an uphill climb, new polling data suggests that these are decidedly UN-conventional times, when even a die-hard Republican like Maryland’s Gov. Larry Hogan dismisses the Trump-endorsed GOP gubernatorial nominee, Dan Cox, as ‘not mentally stable.’ Trump’s ever-worsening legal woes may also be harming GOP odds this election – – eighteen former top Trump Administration officials call Trump’s claims that he issued a ‘standing order’ to declassify any documents he stole from the White House as ‘nonsense’ and ‘ludicrous.’ Yet major media outlets have avoided informing the public that, regardless of classification status, Trump unlawfully STOLE the documents. Why is corporate media afraid to use such plain, accurate descriptions? Media critic and former corporate media ‘insider’ DAN FROOMKIN explains why, and discusses CNN’s cancellation of ‘Reliable Sources’, the last remaining legitimate media criticism program on cable or broadcast TV news. Froomkin also delves into the major media outlets’ recent gobsmacking, misleading, and inaccurate headlines, their fealty to false ‘both sides’ framing, and much more. Plus: a long-overdue and much-needed new ditty from musical satirist Randy Rainbow…

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 8/19/22 (00:58:00)

Part 1: Our guest is Bob Hennelly, and we discuss the Inflation Reduction Act, which was signed by Biden. Unfortunately, it is not enough to actually deal with inflation. More granular attention needs to be paid to individual households: child tax credit should be reinstated, child care should be available for parents, mostly women, who had to leave employment, etc. Inflation is not a policy, it is a problem.

Part 2: We speak with Bill Curry and John Nichols about Liz Cheney, who has been ejected from the Republican Caucus for her opposition to Trump. The Republicans are now the anti-democracy party. They have not become disagreers, but evil and cruel. We anticipate that Trump will run in 2024, and steal the independent vote away from Biden.

On today’s ‘BradCast’: In the wake of the Inflation Reduction Act’s passage containing historic climate investments, new data shows big economic advantages for companies that transition their fleets to all-electric vehicles. Dept. of Energy analysis confirms the I.R.A. law will reduce U.S. climate-warming emissions roughly 40 percent by 2030, and finds that any emissions increase due to fossil fuel industry concessions will be overwhelmingly offset by carbon reductions implemented via the law. House Republicans called climate change a hoax in voting against the bill. To achieve additional climate policies, voters must elect more Democrats to Congress in November. In Wyoming, a Republican 2020 election denier is set to win Secretary of State because no Democrat ran for the job. Election deniers have won GOP nominations for chief election official in five swing states. In Alabama, anti-abortion opponents paid for a full hand recount to confirm that voters really did reject their abortion ban referendum – – recounts are a good thing to counter efforts by Trump/Republicans to undermine the public’s confidence in elections. Trump Organization Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg pleaded guilty to 15 state criminal tax fraud charges, and will serve five months in prison, pay millions in fines, and testify truthfully against the Trump Organization in an upcoming trial. The Justice Department objected, on national security grounds, to a Florida magistrate judge unsealing a redacted version of the affidavit used to obtain an FBI search warrant for documents that Trump stole from the White House. KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: As Schools Open Again, The Nightmare of “Moms For Liberty” (00:55:38)

It’s almost time for the start of schools. Of course all parents want to protect their children from inappropriate material. But when parental rights mean teachers are forbidden from mentioning homosexuality or racism because that means teachers are grooming kids for pedophilia or Chinese communism, liberty is under threat. Hypocritically enough, the vanguard of this threat is from something called Moms For Liberty. On this show, from her writing in The New Republic, Laura Jedeed examines the serious chilling effect on teachers and education. And how social media has encouraged people to believe what they want. Classes and elections coming up!

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN (00:59:30)

Segment One

Our first guest is Bob Hennelly and we discuss the Inflation Reduction Act, which was signed by Biden. Unfortunately, it is not enough to actually deal with inflation. More granular attention needs to be paid to individual households: child tax credit should be reinstated, child care should be available for parents, mostly women, who had to leave employment, etc. Inflation is not a policy, it is a problem.

Segment Two

We then have a chat with Bill Curry and John Nichols about Liz Cheney, who has been ejected from the Republican Caucus for her opposition to Trump. The Republicans are now the anti-democracy party. They have not become disagreers, but evil and cruel. We anticipate that Trump will run in 2024, and steal the independent vote away from Biden.

LIGHTLY ON THE GROUND: Martha and Bread (00:27:34)

I intend to make bread again, so I checked the fridge for the jar of sourdough starter my sister gave me years ago, and called a friend who bakes bread with heart and soul and sustenance kneaded into the dough. Martha Fell Jolkovski was as happy to share the stories as she’d be to share a loaf of bread from her oven. From history to how to, and to the music, this is a warm sweet episode of Lightly on the Ground Radio.

COUNTERSPIN: Azadeh Shahshahani/Central America policy, Jon Lloyd/Facebook election misinfo (00:28:00)

This week on CounterSpin: The Biden administration says it’s making progress toward its goal to slow migration from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador by addressing the causes of that migration. The White House “Call to Action” foregrounds private sector “investments” as key to creating economic opportunity and to rooting out corruption in the region. And companies like Microsoft and PepsiCo have stepped up to do…well, what exactly? And how does this differ from the support for transnational corporations and their extractive, profit-driven policies that has misled US involvement for decades? Azadeh Shahshahani is legal and advocacy director at Project South. She joins us to raise some questions about the US government’s claim that this time, they’re really bringing stability and security to northern Central America.

A Florida appellate court affirmed an order prohibiting a parentless 16-year-old from getting an abortion on the grounds that she is not mature enough to decide whether to terminate her pregnancy. ROBERT REICH: The Media Bias Nobody is Talking About (05:22)

Robert Reich breaks down how the mainstream media draws a false equivalence between the right and the left and misleads the public about what’s really at stake. Watch More: The Real Political Battle in America ►► https://youtu.be/hkM_NG6HkqY The mainstream media has historically tried to balance left and right in its political coverage, and present what it views as a reasonable center. That may sound good in theory. But the old politics no longer exists and the former labels “left” versus “right” are outdated. Today it’s democracy versus authoritarianism, voting rights versus white supremacy. There’s no reasonable center between these positions, no justifiable compromise. Equating them is misleading and dangerous. Don’t fall for it.

LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: A New Democratic and Equitable Business Model: Open Collective (00:28:00)

Many of the world’s most successful businesses began as someone’s good idea. But the path from startup to conventional financial success typically involves going public, prioritizing shareholder’s interests, and ultimately selling to a giant conglomerate whose intentions are far from the original mission of the business founders. In this episode, Laura interviews guests who say this conventional path of success is desperately in need of an overhaul. Why must new and innovative ideas come to market through old and undemocratic platforms? What if rather than selling out, successful businesses became community assets that put ownership and governance in the hands of workers and even consumers? Could a startup become a means of building community wealth, economic justice, and accountability over our technology? Our guests explain how.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Jungle by Upton Sinclair – ch. 14 (00:20:17)

ROBERT REICH: The System: Who Rigged It, How We Fix It (00:11:50)

Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich presents the reader’s digest of his latest book, The System: Who Rigged It, How We Fix It. He explores the system of power in America that bails out corporations instead of people, even in times of crisis, and breaks down how we have socialism for corporations and the rich, and harsh capitalism for everybody else. As power has concentrated in the hands of corporations and the wealthy few, those few have grabbed nearly all the economic gains — and political power — for themselves. Meanwhile, workers have been shafted. This isn’t a democracy, where all power is shared. It’s an oligarchy, where those at the top have the power to grab everything for themselves. But history shows that oligarchies cannot hold on to power forever. They are inherently unstable. When a vast majority of people come to view an oligarchy as illegitimate and an obstacle to their wellbeing — which is happening before our very eyes as this crisis exacerbates — oligarchies become vulnerable.

RADIO ART HOUR: Rachel Rosenthal, Sheila Davies Sumner, Scanner  (00:58:00)

This week tune in “filename:FUTURFAX” by Rachel Rosenthal (1990) and “What Is the Matter in Amy Glennon?” by Sheila Davies Sumner (1989), both introduced by Jess Speer. Plus the show finishes with Scanner’s “Hardcore.” First, like the best of dystopian fiction, “filename:FUTURFAX” (1990) at first takes us in with the premise that the future is a technological utopia where problems of hunger, deprivation, uncertainty, and unhappiness have been solved forever. The narrator receives a fax from a future civilization after a great crash, sent through a time warp, written and clarified by a computer operated by a team of scientists sending good wishes. Whispers of uncertainty slip in when you hear that art is no longer made after being deemed superfluous and subversive by the lawmakers (they do tell jokes, however). Recalling 1984 and Brave New World, the future civilization is founded on total technocratic control and scientific progress, having become de-deified and losing religion because they control all the natural functions formerly ascribed to mysterious divinities. And then moral and social decorum are maintained thanks to the implants (should we say that?). Soon its revealed that some people suffer incredible fits of boredom, and some, labeled deviants, even escape to the world outside the domed structures of the SSC (self-sufficient communities). These deviants have set up a parallel civilization, one that our scientist reports with great astonishment appears to worship the very environment, in spite of the great hardships imposed by the natural world and the ruins of 20th century civilization. Humanity, at this unknown future date, is reduced to a population of comfortable citizens living in an environment where every element, including themselves, is controlled, and a group eking out an existence and sacrificing themselves in the work of making amends with the natural world, often becoming sick or dying during cooperative clean-ups of the ruins. And then tune in “What Is the Matter in Amy Glennon?” by Sheila Davies Sumner (1989) also introduced by Jess Speer.

In What is the Matter in Amy Glennon?, Sheila Davies Sumner showcases her interest in the connection between the physical and metaphysical, storytelling, science, and psychology, as well as her agility with words and quick wit. The piece simultaneously tells and constructs the story of Amy Glennon, whose body and mind have been separated by The Great Fathers of Science, as she reckons with her consciousness, relationship to the quantum, and the bitterness of self-knowledge, and transmutes it into a marriage of philosophy and science, and wisdom in the form of paper cups of hot coffee. The story is told alternatingly by a narrator and by Amy herself, accompanied by a chorus, and is worked and re-worked within itself in an auction-house whose auctioneer takes bids on the content, direction, and meaning of the text. Deeply philosophical, the piece is filled with rapid-fire confetti blasts of references to mythology, science, metaphysics, philosophers, theorists, artists, and subconscious symbolism, playfully hurrying the listener on in a delightful almost giddy pace towards the center of human and universal thought and experience. In its many transmutations, twists, and turns, the piece encourages the listener to reflect on storytelling, identity, the relationship between science and philosophy, and the very nature of being in both the physical and metaphysical senses. Some listeners may feel compelled to listen again and again to follow the various paths, references and trains of thoughts. The script of the piece can be read on the New American Radio archive. – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2020/2021, Jess Speer. The show ends with with Scanner’s “Hardcore” from his 1993 debut “Scanner 1” album. The British artist scanned cell phone signals into his work here.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Jungle by Upton Sinclair – ch. 10 (00:27:09)

CREATING OUR PREFERRED FUTURE: 21 Years Transforming A Suburban Property (00:29:00)

This episode picks up where Part 1 leaves off. We look at the benefits to be gained by transforming a suburban property and suburbia, both personal but also as a critical part of a green economy. Part 2 also touches on the history of suburbia as a product of capitalist economics and its need to promote excess consumption and externalize costs.

This episode is also a preview of upcoming episodes in the series.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 8/15/22 (00:56:13)

On the Show:  Failed former President Donald Trump is under investigation for, among other things, violations of the Espionage Act. Rand Paul immediately demands the Espionage Act be repealed after it is learned that Trump is under investigation for violating the Espionage Act. Donald Trump is hypothetically facing 33 years in prison and the loss of his ability to hold public office. Donald Trump indirectly sends bizarre messages to Attorney General Merrick Garland, either attempting to tamper or floating the possibility of a plea deal. Fox News host Steve Doocy seems to be telling Donald Trump to stop inciting violence against FBI officers, saying instead that Attorney General Merrick Garland is truly to blame. Fox News contributor Jessica Tarlov, a Democrat, easily crushes an unhinged panel of 4 right wingers. Arizona Republican Gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake says, during a Turning Point USA event in Arizona, that both Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis have “big dick energy.” Trumpists are interviewed about their thoughts regarding the FBI search warrant of Donald Trump’s home, and it’s as unhinged as it is scary. Donald Trump’s former National Security Adviser, John Bolton, triggers Newsmax host Eric Bolling by stating that the country is safer under Joe Biden than it was under Trump. Voicemail caller suggests that David listen to the 911 calls made related to radical Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert’s family, specifically her husband.

THE BRADCAST 8/12/22: Warrant Reveals Espionage Probe for Trump; ‘Revolutionary’ climate bill passes Congress (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Two huge, historic, blockbuster news events unfolded on Friday. A federal judge unsealed the warrant issued to the FBI and Justice Department finding ‘probable cause’ to search disgraced former President Donald Trump’s Florida residence for classified documents that he stole from the White House. The warrant reveals that Trump is under federal criminal investigation for obstruction of justice, unlawful removal of government records, and alleged violations of the Espionage Act. Several sets of documents were marked ‘TopSecret/SCI’ for Sensitive Compartmented Information, the highest level of classification, but it is unclear if any of the documents relate to nuclear weapons secrets. Also today: Democrats in the US House passed the Inflation Reduction Act, the landmark climate, healthcare, and tax reform bill, with zero Republican votes. Once signed by President Biden, the law will direct $370 billion in investments to combat climate change (the largest such single investment in history by any nation), rebuild the U.S. manufacturing sector, reduce pollution, and transition the nation to clean energy. Environmental journalist DAVID ROBERTS, publisher of the Volts newsletter, explains why the new law is likely to be a game changer in the fight to mitigate dangerous man-made climate change, and the key mechanisms by which it will reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 40 percent by 2030. Roberts addresses the well-founded criticisms of the bill, including its giveaways to the fossil fuel industry, and why, on balance, it is likely to have a ‘transformative’ positive effect on U.S. politics, the economy, and the multi-generational fight to solve climate change.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 8/12/22 (00:58:00)

Part 1

Scott Braddock discusses what is happening in Texas, during the election cycle for governor. Currently, Beto O’Rourke is challenging Abbott, the incumbent. The main topic is the Uvalde shooting at the Robb elementary school, where 19 children and 2 teachers were killed, while police from various agencies stood by. These police agencies have kept the records of the evens secret. An audience member was castigated as a mother—— by O’Rourke because he laughed during the discussion of the deaths. Other topics in Texas were the economy, climate change, the powergrid in Texas. Trump has visited Texas five times, and CPAC was held in Texas. Only one debate between the candidates has been scheduled, on a Friday night (typically when all attention is focused on the high school football game.

Part 2:

We talk with Stephen Pimpare and Bill Curry. The first discussion is about the Lincoln Project video aimed to needle Trump, Who squealed? About the documents still at Mar-A-Lago. It has caused consternation among Republicans, who are defending Trump, and insisting that Merrick Garland release the subpoena which authorized the search in Florida. We also discuss the recent primary elections, and how Republicans participated in Democratic primaries, to sway those elections.

THE BRADCAST 8/11/22: Disturbing New Revelations in Probe of Trump’s Theft of White House Documents (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: New reporting reveals that the FBI’s court-approved search of disgraced former President Donald Trump’s Florida residence was a last resort, after months of negotiations and Trump’s defiance of multiple Justice Department subpoenas to get him to return highly classified documents that he stole from the White House. Trump, Republicans and rightwing media outlets have spent days lying to his gullible supporters and accusing the FBI of misconduct, falsely portraying Trump as a victim, while Trump has refused to release the warrant and clear up any confusion. On Thursday, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland called Trump’s bluff, and asked a federal judge to unseal the warrant. Ominously, Trump’s attorneys selectively released only the part of the warrant that revealed the name of the magistrate judge who signed it, predictably resulting in death threats against the judge and his family. In Ohio, a MAGA supporter, enraged by rightwing media’s false portrayal of the court-approved search, attempted to attack an FBI field office. Trump’s ongoing barrage of lies and inflammatory rhetoric, amplified by rightwing media, makes it difficult to believe that political violence isn’t part of his plan. Also today: Hilarious new ad from the Lincoln Project needles Trump. New polling numbers show a bit of encouraging news for Democrats and democracy lovers in these decidedly unconventional times. Plus: Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

TUC RADIO: The Secret Side of Free Trade – Ralph Nader in 1994 (00:00:00)

Looking back over the last three decades and trying to understand the heating of the climate and the melting glaciers and the poisoning of all waters and the air; and when hard pressed to put it all into one sentence I used to say that the world’s largest corporations re-wrote the rules of international globalized trade that accelerated mining and manufacturing and transport and fuel extraction and led to climate collapse and concentrated power in very few hands. In the 1990s I worked as radii producer with the IFG, The International Forum on Globalization. They pointed out that the globalized trade rules of the GATT and the WTO fundamentally limited rights and power of peoples of all member states, and even restricted the decision making powers of their governments. At the IFG I met some extraordinary activists, economists, scholars, and researchers among them Ralph Nader who has never stopped his fight against corporate power and who I still follow now – 30 years later – on the Ralph Nader Radio Hour. Here is his 1994 analysis of the impact of global trade agreements such as the WTO on each member countrys laws, democracy and environment – even on powerful countries such as the US.The program ends with a clip by Noam Chomsky on global trade organized by what he calls the New World Order Inc. – the global economy and the demise of democracy.

JUST SOLUTIONS: Inflation Reduction Act’s Poison Pill  (00:29:00)

The Inflation Reduction Act would invest $369 billion in climate solutions and environmental justice and would put us on a path to 40 percent emissions reduction by 2030. It is being hailed by many environmentalists as a positive move forward but some are urging caution. The Center for Biological Diversity says Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia has buried a poison pill inside the legislation by allowing the expansion of oil and gas drilling in the US. Our guest today is Jean Su, Energy Justice Program Director and Senior Attorney with the Center who says instead of investing in more drilling, President Biden should declare a climate emergency and confront the fossil fuel industry head-on.

COUNTERSPIN: Alex Jones, Nuclear War (00:28:00)

This week on CounterSpin: A Texas court has told Alex Jones to pay some $49 million dollars in damages for his perverse, accusatory talk about the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre being a “big hoax”—the jury evidently not believing Jones’ tale that he was suffering a weird and weirdly profitable “psychosis” when he told his followers that no one died at Sandy Hook because none of the victims ever existed, nor were they evidently moved by his subsequent claim that he did it all “from a pure place.” Jones, as the Hearst Connecticut Media editorial board noted in a strong statement, is trying to keep any mention of his “white supremacy and right-wing extremism” out of the Sandy Hook case he’s facing in New Hampshire—because, his lawyer says, that discussion would be “unfairly prejudicial and inflammatory,” an “attack on [Jones’] character” that would “play to the emotions of the jury and distract from the main issues.” What should be the “main issues” when our vaunted elite press corps engage a figure like Alex Jones? We talk with Angelo Carusone, president of Media Matters.

SEA CHANGE RADIO: To Serve & Protect Whom? Alec Karakatsanis on Copaganda (00:29:00)What comes to mind when you hear the words crime and safety? For many, these words evoke images of poor people stealing things, or police enforcing laws to suppress street crime. Our guest today on Sea Change Radio argues that there’s a whole set of crimes that have been intentionally omitted from the messaging we get and that, for many, police and safety are far from synonymous. This week we speak with Alec Karakatsanis, the founder and executive director of Civil Rights Corps. A former public defender and the author of Usual Cruelty: The Complicity of Lawyers in the Criminal Injustice System, Karakatsanis believes that much of our country’s perspective on crime and policing has been shaped by copaganda, the swaying of public opinion for the benefit of law enforcement. We look at the corrosive societal effects of historic and current police practices, examine how and why these wrongheaded approaches persist, and discuss the complicity of journalists and policymakers who fall for and then perpetuate the American mythology of crime and safety.

LAURA FLANDERS SHOW: For-Profit Business of Training Guns-for-hire is Literally Booming In Rural America  (00:28:00)

The last US soldier to leave Afghanistan returned home this August, but private security personnel long outnumbered US troops in that war, and the for-profit business of training guns-for-hire is booming — literally — in the backyards of many rural Americans. In this special episode, The Laura Flanders Show travels to the tiny town of Hoffman in Richmond County, NC, where residents live next to a loud private training ground. They have real concerns about who is receiving training there and why, especially after the January 6th Insurrection at the Capitol. Laura interviews Hoffmans Mayors and one of the County Commissioners who approved the permit for Oak Grove Technologies tactical training site. They regret that approval now. And we travel to nearby Hoke County, where a diverse coalition of local stakeholders ” and an all-POC County Commission ” were able to stop the expansion of Reservoir International, another training outfit seeking to expand its footprint near the county seat of Raeford. The latter is an example of the power of community organizing, says Serena Sebring of Blueprint NC. Blueprint is partnering with a statewide network of veteran ant-racist, anti-militia organizers to pool information and lift up local strategies for making communities safer.

LOPATE AT LARGE: Free Speech (00:52:10)

According to author Jonathan Zimmerman, in America we like to think we live in a land of liberty, where everyone can say whatever they want. Throughout our history, however, we have also been quick to censor people who offend or frighten us. We talk a good game about freedom of speech, then we turn around and deny it to others. Free speech allows us to criticize our leaders. It lets us consume the art, film, and literature we prefer. And, perhaps most importantly, it allows minorities to challenge the oppression they suffer. While any of us are censored, none of us are free. Join us when, historian Jonathan Zimmerman and Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Signe Wilkinson discuss their perspective of free speech in America: who established it, who has denounced it, and who has risen to its defense, on this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large.

While wages have flatlined for most working class people, rents have reached new highs, leaving most people struggling. But its not just in the US. The rising cost of living is affected the entire world. Samuel Steins new book, Capital City and the Real Estate State, highlights the growing influence of investment capital into land as the driving force behind gentrification and the power developers have over city and local governments. We talk to Samuel about the rise of the global real estate market and we look at how radical city planning, rent control and socialized land projects can help fight gentrification.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 8/10/22 (00:51:51)

On the Show: July inflation numbers come in lower than expected, reducing year-over-year inflation from 9.1% to 8.5%. Failed former President Donald Trump breaks his silence on the FBI raid of his home, instantly imploding in a series of unhinged posts to Truth Social. Donald Trump’s deposition is today in New York city. Donald Trump is reportedly seeking a criminal defense attorney after the FBI raid of his home. A judge rules that the IRS must indeed hand over Donald Trump’s taxes to the House of Representatives. The new conspiracy theory reaction to the FBI raid of Donald Trump’s home is that the FBI planted evidence against Trump. MAGA-world uncontrollably melts down over the FBI raid of Donald Trump’s home, including Charlie Kirk, Newt Gingrich, Senator Marsha Blackburn, and more. Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon says that the FBI raid of Donald Trump’s home is the first step towards an assassination plot against Trump. Alex Jones reportedly sent non-consensual nude pictures of his own wife to Trump confidant Roger Stone. Matthew DePerno, a Trump-endorsed Republican nominee for Michigan Attorney General, is revealed to have participated in a voting machine tampering scam, per newly released documents. THE POSITIVE MIND: What Love is Not (00:58:00)

Love is a feeling, not a hallmark card or a box of chocolates. It is deeper and harder than that. Love is not unconditional, it needs the right conditions to be present, to be felt. This week Kevin and Niseema talk about love and how it is the antidote to loneliness. In looking at the questions of the UCLA Loneliness Scale it becomes clear that a lack of love, or the feeling of love, is at the core of why loneliness is so ubiquitous. In looking at love and the ways it shapes our experience of living, we hope to inspire a thoughtful process about the meaning and feeling of love for you.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Jungle by Upton Sinclair – ch. 6 (00:26:36)

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 8/9/22 (00:56:37)

On the Show: Andrew Sullivan, author, editor, and blogger at the Weekly Dish, joins David to discuss the current state of Trumpism and the conservative movement. The FBI raids failed former President Donald Trump’s house at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, and Trump absolutely loses it. MAGA-world flips out in reaction to the FBI raid of Donald Trump’s house, including Mark Levin, Bernie Kerik, Lauren Boebert, Alex Jones, Roger Stone, Sean Hannity, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Dan Bongino, and more. Eric Trump, Donald Trump’s son, appears on Fox News in reaction to the FBI raiding Trump’s home, and makes a complete fool of himself. Could the 2022 midterm elections be the worst ever for Republicans? Republican Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker is still unable to explain if and under what circumstances he will debate his opponent, incumbent Senator Raphael Warnock. Infowars conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ text messages have reportedly been turned over to the House January 6 committee investigating the Trump riots. Republican Alaska congressional candidate Sarah Palin is visibly confused when asked to explain what her priorities would be if she were elected. Voicemail caller wonders whether the FBI raid on Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home will inspire more Republicans to turn out and vote in the upcoming 2022 November midterm elections.

RADIO ART HOUR: Kate Donovan, Joan Schuman, Victoria Shen, Aaron Dilloway (00:58:00)

Tune in today for “Chorus Duet for Radio” by Kate Donovan (2016) and “Ligature” by Joan Schuman (2009), both introduced by Karen Werner. And also featured is Victoria Shen and Aaron Dilloway’s “Inhaled Yowls Machine” (2022). Kate Donovans radio art decenters us humans. She has an ongoing interest in elements and natural radio. Also noteworthy is her ideal listening situation for this piece: It’s supposed to be broadcast on microFM…amplified through multiple radios to an audience sitting on the floor in the (near)dark. My dream listener actually is listening at home alone in the dark, right before daybreak…! Another of Kate Donovans recent pieces, Nightcall Radio, also has instructions for listening in the dark, and I have found that its worth following this instruction if you can. You can hear Kate Donovans radio show elements here: https://www.mixcloud.com/elements_with_kd/ – The second work featured today is “Ligature” by Joan Schuman. American radio artist Joan Schuman produced “Ligature” in 2009. Listening to a number of Joan Schumans pieces Im struck by the sensuality and dreamy surrealism in her work; she combines documentary poetics with radio drama and radio poem. Ligature is loosely based on the lives of Daisy and Violet Hilton, conjoined twins born in the UK in 1911. They were part of the European circus and sideshow circuit in the 1920s and 30s. Setting up the piece, Joan Schuman writes, Theyre retired now. They whisper themselves to sleep while conjuring what death will feel like when it comes to them both…Their single knotted torso extends beyond immediate relationship out to the world. “Ligature” is part of a pair of pieces called “Catalogue of Mourning.” And the last work featured today is an excerpt from a live performance July 23, 2022 at Wave Farm in New York by Victoria Shen and Aaron Dilloway. Inhaled Yowls Machine is the name of a project and novel tape instrument which will be used for composing, recording, and broadcasting during the Wave Farm Residency by the artist duo Victoria Shen and Aaron Dilloway. The instrument will consist of hacked 8-track tape players that will function like a motorized Mellotron. This novel approach to tape manipulation presents the opportunity for multichannel sound collage and a unique sounding instrument. Dilloway/Shen will use recorded samples from the local radio as the chief material for the tape compositions. These compositions will be broadcast over local radio during the course of the residency and culminate in a live performance with a quadraphonic sound configuration. Dilloway co-founded the industrial noise group Wolf Eyes, and is an improviser and performer who works with 1/4″ tape loops in 8-track cartridges as well as other obsolete electronic equipment. Victoria Shen is a sound artist, experimental music performer, and instrument-maker based in San Francisco.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Jungle by Upton Sinclair – ch. 5 (00:27:36)

It is the end of the 19th century. Like thousands of others, the Rudkus family has emigrated from Lithuania to America in search of a better life. DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 8/8/22 (00:55:00)

On the Show: President Joe Biden racks up major wins while in COVID quarantine, including the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, the killing of Al Qaeda terrorist Ayman al-Zawahiri, a tremendously good jobs report, 54 consecutive days of gas prices declines, and more. Another look at why the “what is a woman?” question from Republicans is so absurd and bad faith. Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo’s video about the latest excellent jobs report looks like a hostage video. New pictures confirm the story about failed former President Donald Trump flushing documents down the toilet, despite Trump’s denials. Donald Trump’s CPAC Texas 2022 speech is a total disaster, including Trump trying to kiss swimmer Riley Gaines, who awkwardly flinches and rejects him. Correspondent Luke Beasley was on the ground at CPAC Texas 2022, and it was an absolutely disaster. CPAC Texas 2022 was a representation of everything wrong with the United States, and we look at clips from Mike Lindell, Ted Cruz, Rick Scott, and Marjorie Taylor Greene. Infowars conspiracy theorist Alex Jones is crushed by a $49 million verdict in the Sandy Hook defamation case. Former Trump associated Roger Stone immediately takes to the air to desperately beg for money for conspiracy theorist Alex Jones moments after the $49 million defamation verdict against Jones. Voicemail caller believes David had a nose job.

THE BRADCAST 8/5/22 (00:58:00)

Encore – original airdate 7/14/2022. On today’s ‘BradCast’: Is the Garland Department of Justice moving forward on criminal investigations of Donald Trump and his cronies over their multi-pronged plot to steal the 2020 Election? A new op-ed from a bipartisan group of former top-level federal prosecutors and DOJ officials concludes that ‘evidence is now overwhelming that Donald Trump was the driving force behind a massive criminal conspiracy to interfere with the official January 6 congressional proceeding and to defraud the United States of a fair election outcome.’ They warn that ‘the damage to America’s future that would be inflicted by giving him a pass far outweighs the risks of prosecuting him.’ Andrew Weissman, federal prosecutor of high-profile crimes, worries that the DOJ’s investigation of the January 6 failed coup is moving too slowly. But independent national security journalist Marcy Wheeler of Emptywheel.net, who has reported on every single indictment, court filing and every available shred of evidence more closely than anyone on the planet, contends otherwise. In a complex and far-reaching discussion, Wheeler, who has been far ahead of the curve on all of this for the past year and a half, argues that DOJ is conducting a much more comprehensive and sprawling investigation than big-time former federal prosecutors appear to have noticed. Wheeler also discusses the big picture of prosecutions for the January 6 insurrection, new revelations from the House January 6 Committee’s public hearings, the information gaps that remain in these investigations, and potential scenarios that could lead to the prosecution of Trump and his top cronies.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 8/5/22 (00:58:06)

Part 1:

We talk with Rep. Jon Rosenthal (Houston) about the Kansas vote to keep abortion part of the Kansas constitution. This emphasizes the cruelty of the Supreme Court regarding the effects of the Dobbs ruling. Unfortunately, in other states, like Texas, the only vote citizens have is indirect: people must vote for representatives who support abortion rights, rather than the law provisions themselves. But this is a vote about the future. Texas has the highest maternal mortality rate of all 50 states. There was no Medicaid expansion, and Texas women have the least medical coverage of all American women. Cruelty is the point. We also discuss the Mexican extensive accompaniment system, which grew to help women safely terminate pregnancies on their own. Its organizers are now moving abortion-inducing medication across the border and helping replicate the system in the United States.

Part 2:

We talk with Bill Curry, an American lawyer and politician who has been a two-time Democratic nominee for Governor of Connecticut and a White House advisor in the administration of Bill Clinton. He was head of Freeze Voter, a nuclear freeze group. Despite the false advertising by the anti-abortion groups, Kansas has elected to keep abortion rights in their constitution. (A huge turnout, led by women) This would appear to reject the Republican push, and provides hope to other pro choice groups in the US. Gerrymandering provides only a 4-6% advantage, so the strategy must be to get voters to come to the polls. Democrats must be better grass-roots organizers. They must deliver what they promise, and make clear that they stand against the part of cruelty.

THE BRADCAST 8/4/22: Rep. Hank Johnson, D-GA, on ‘unpacking’ SCOTUS (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Tennessee held its midterm primaries on a Thursday, a bizarre choice by their GOP-controlled state legislature that virtually assures low turnout. Tennessee Republicans also force their voters to vote on unverifiable touchscreen voting systems, which caused a bizarre ‘glitch’. Then we’re joined by REP. HANK JOHNSON, Democrat from Georgia’s 4th Congressional District and Chair of the House Judiciary’s Subcommittee on the Courts, for a detailed and lively discussion about his ongoing attempts to bring reform and accountability to what he describes as the ‘corrupt system’ embodied by today’s rightwing, extremist super-majority on the packed-and-stolen U.S. Supreme Court. Johnson cites major rulings in the Court’s most recent session that overturned established precedent and dismantled states’ and individuals’ rights and liberties – – including long-standing privacy rights and reproductive freedoms. Johnson explains several bills he has introduced with Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) to reform the federal judiciary and the nation’s highest court, ‘to re-balance the Court away from this current 6-3 rightwing extremist majority that was packed by Mitch McConnell, Donald Trump, and the Federalist Society.’ The bills include expanding the Supreme Court, instituting term limits, the first-ever code of ethics for Supreme Court justices, and much more. Johnson also delves into the history of how we got here, how voters can engage in court reform, and why reforming the federal judiciary is critical at ‘a political moment when the future of our democracy, our freedoms, are at risk.’ Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: What It Took–And Still Does–For Democrats to Win (00:58:59)

America today is not the America of the past. The Republican Party is unrecognizable. But in his new book What it Took to Win, author and history professor Michael Kazin, discerns a theme that still works as we head into election season. Among the varied demographics, people want the government to work for them. Today’s right plays on a sense that it works for those people, not us. This fear of insecurity has fed the right wing culture war. Americans are consistently against corporate greed; social movements can make it safe for politicians to say that. Kazin says identifying and promoting Moral Capitalism works.

Segment One

We talk with Eleanor Cummins, a freelance science journalist, who has contributed to Wired, The New Republic, and Slate, among many others. We discuss the option that many women choose, as a result of the Dobbs decision: sterilization. We talk about the main methods of sterilization, and the reaction of doctors who are sometimes reluctant to perform the procedure, and what hurdles many women face when making this choice.

Segment Two

A conversation with Markian Hawryluk, about for-profit hospices. Hospices Have Become Big Business for Private Equity Firms, Raising Concerns About End-of-Life Care. We discuss the rise in the number of Private Equity Hospices, and how they are now a big business. 2/3 of hospices are now for-profit. Medicare has spent $22.3 B in 2020 on hospice care. We discuss how private equity firms want immediate profits, and how they make it happen: less care. We examine what oversight there is for such businesses, and what the non-profit hospice services’ role is likely to be in the future.

TUC RADIO: From GATT to the WTO – The Secret Side of Free Trade (00:29:00)

How the rules of the GATT, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, were re-written and how, in 1995, the GATT became the WTO. The World Trade Organization enforces the rules of globalized trade and is the most powerful organization that hardly anybody heard of – to this day. The WTO can override a member countrys governments, laws and regulations if they are deemed a barrier to trade.

Against the background of the war in Ukraine, the collapse of the climate and today’s extraordinary power of corporations, some business consultants are now warning that we are heading into an era of de-globalization with guaranteed disorder and scarcity. They say that global trade relations are coming apart, supply lines collapse and the war in Ukraine affects the world. So, it is time to visit again the rules of global trade. Expanded trade in the last 30 years has led to unprecedented environmental destruction; even the promoters of the World Trade Organization, such as the US, suffered the consequences of the export of jobs and industries. Only 30 years ago I was present for the formation of the IFG, The International Forum on Globalization. At the exact time as the most powerful nations of the western world – foremost the US – wrote expanded and enforceable rules to globalize world trade, the IFG came up with an analysis and critique of the cultural, social, political, and environmental impacts of such economic globalization project. The IFG was a North-South research and educational institution. They invited leading activists, economists, scholars, and researchers not just from the US but from Norway to Malaysia and from India to the Philippines. Here is the re-broadcast of the first program in the radio series on the history of trade rules under GATT, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade with voices of some of the founders of the IFG.

COUNTERSPIN: Luke Harris and Joe Torres on America’s Racist Legacy (00:28:00)

The crises we face right now in the US—a nominally democratic political process that’s strangled by white supremacist values, a corporate profiteering system that mindlessly overrides human needs to treat the environment as just another “input”—are terrible, but not, precisely, new. People have fought against these ideas in various forms before; and some strategies have been useful, others less so. The front line for us now is the fact that we have powerful actors who don’t just want to argue for particular ideas to guide us forward, but want to shut down the spaces in which we can have the arguments. And where a vigorous free press should be, we have corporate, commercial media that don’t have defending those spaces as their foremost concern.

SEA CHANGE RADIO: Daniel Nichanian on the Nuts and Bolts of Local Elections (00:29:00)

Anyone who paid attention to the ugly aftermath of the 2020 presidential election suddenly realized that a coterie of state-level bureaucrats had a whole lot more power than we ever imagined. And it was a huge wake up call for those who have chosen not to vote in past local elections. Elections matter, even small ones. This week on Sea Change Radio, we welcome political scientist and election expert Daniel Nichanian to discuss the importance of local elections in this country and how his new media venture, Bolts Magazine, intends to shine a brighter light on small, but increasingly vital races in all fifty states. We talk about the upcoming midterms, uncover arcane election laws in certain states and examine what’s on the ballot locally in the wake of the Supreme Courts reversal of Roe v. Wade.

Mitra Kalita and Sara Lomax-Reese of URL Media join Laura for this month’s Meet the BIPOC Press to consider what has changed in the coverage ” and the organizing ” around reproductive justice in the years since Roe. Are abortion seekers of color still a sidebar in reporting or has journalism finally reached a tipping point on inclusion? President Roosevelt and Vice President Wallace’s warnings have come full circle. It’s critical that we call out these economic royalists for what they are doing, and not let them and their minions rewrite our Constitution. Also, President Joe Biden reunites 400 migrant families separated under Trump.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Jungle by Upton Sinclair – ch. 4 (00:33:27)

In this one-woman play, The Second Coming of Joan of Arc, Joan returns to share her story with contemporary women. She tells her experiences with the highest levels of church, state, and military, and unmasks the brutal misogyny behind patriarchal institutions. This play was revived at the Hollywood Fringe Festival in June 2022.

ALAN WATTS: Stop Feeling Lost by Doing This (00:15:17)

If there is one simple question that bothers us all as human beings, it is : Why are we living ? It is a burden on our shoulders, and we cannot think about it without going depressed or becoming sad, because simply we can’t answer it. We got blocked. In this lecture, Alan Watts talks about the game of life, how the answer of that question is : To play. To simply not take it seriously, to stay within the flow of life without having to be very strict and rigid about it. We have to take it as if it was a game. Because if we take it seriously, we will be forced to think scientifically, to predict the future, and be aware that any false move, would lead us to a fatal death, which is not the case.

WHEN THE BIOMASS HITS THE WIND TURBINE #99: Die Like Your Life Depended on it (00:29:26)

Hate to break it to you, but we are all going to die. Yet the way we dispose of those final remains has become more and more unsustainable. Cemeteries are full or filling up, cremation fills the skies with toxins and greenhouse gases, hundreds of thousands of cancer-causing fluids are pumped into dead bodies to make them look a bit more lifelike.

So, alternatives are increasingly the norm – from reusing graves to dissolving bodies in lye to paper coffins to home burials. Join Annie and Jay Warmke of Blue Rock Station for a discussion of the problems associated with getting rid of our corpse and some possible solutions.

RADIO ART HOUR: Anna Raimondo, Mark Vernon (00:58:00)

“Magneto Mori: Vienna” by Mark Vernon and “Mediterraneo” by Anna Raimondo, both introduced by Karen Werner. “Magneto Mori: Vienna” was produced by Scottish radio artist Mark Vernon. Mark Vernon has been creating a series of radio pieces, including this one, out of semi-degraded audio tape. Using a portable reel-to-reel tape recorder, he records sounds from a place, in this case Vienna, Austria. Then he cuts up the tape and in Vienna buried it in a muddy garden with local souvenir fridge magnets to further erase parts of the tape. After a few days he exhumed the tape and spliced it back together in random order. Meanwhile Mark Vernon went to Viennese flea markets collecting cassettes and Dictaphones and the like. Out of all this material he created a portrait of Vienna in both place and time; an archaeological excavation of found sounds, lost fragments, buried memories and magnetic traces. Mark Vernon’s Magneto Mori: Vienna was commissioned by Kunstradio in Vienna and first broadcast in 2019. – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2019/2020, Karen Werner. Also tune in for “Mediterraneo” by Anna Raimondo (2014), also introduced by Karen Werner. Anna Raimondo produced “Mediterraneo” in 2014 as both a radio artwork and video installation. It is also introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2019/2020, Karen Werner.
