KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: Democrats Can WIn Again. If…(00:59:56)

In the 90s, the party took a turn to the right, taking the working and middle class base for granted. Instead they went for Trump in 2024. Clinton hurt this former base with austerity, and poorly thought out welfare reform as he unleashed the private sector. As a result, today the only base is the bi-coastal, college educated elite. When they were strong, Democrats had been pro-labor, and slightly left. Today the Democrats brand ID is destroyed. Obama was an outlier, he did have a populist coalition. On this show academic essayist Neal Meyer who is researching the transformation of the party, talks about this and specifies why there’s now evidence that the momentum might be changing. Democrats win when there’s an actual movement.

THE BRADCAST: 6/24/2025 Authoritarianism Underway — But We’re Still Here to Fight It; RCV in NYC Mayoral election (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt absurdly declared that Donald Trump invented the motto, ‘peace through strength.’ Trump’s bombing of Iran’s nuclear sites did not ‘obliterate’ them, and Israel immediately violated his cease-fire order. Fossil fuel-intensified heat dome broils the country. Ranked Choice Voting is wildly complex and will be used in the NYC mayoral primary. Corrupt rightwing US Supreme Court supermajority cruelly allowed Trump to continue violating due process and endanger migrants by deporting them to third countries. America has not quite descended into full-blown authoritarianism, thanks to the free press. But we are close to it, as evidenced by the masked and armed federal goons who violently arrested the father of three Marines for deportation, and then lied about it. Plus Desi Doyen has our new ‘Green News Report.’

ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Controlling What’s Controlling You: Breaking Free from Habits, Hangups, and Denia  (00:30:00)

On this show were exploring the sneaky ways we lose control – without even realizing we’ve handed it over. Have you ever found yourself doing something “again” and thinking, Why do I keep doing this? Maybe its late-night scrolling, that one more drink, the need to say yes when you’re screaming no inside. These patterns creep in, settle down, and before you know it, they’ve built a little nest in your life. We call them habits, but sometimes, they’re more than that. Sometimes they’re hangups, hurts, or full-blown addictions masquerading as routines. And here’s the kicker – they don’t just take up space; they slowly take the wheel. What if you’re not as in control as you thought? What if what you think is manageable is actually managing you?

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Time Machine by H. G. Wells ch.12 (00:14:59)

The Time Machine is a science fiction novella by H. G. Wells, first published in 1895.  To date, the book has been adapted into at least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It indirectly inspired many more works of fiction in many media. UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS (00:16:03)

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 (General Assembly resolution 217 A) as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations. It sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected and it has been translated into over 500 languages.

THE BRADCAST: 6/23/2025 ‘Anti-War’ Trump Attacks a Iran on false WMD claims; Guest: Rolling Stone’s Andrew Perez (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Donald Trump ordered missile strikes on three nuclear sites in Iran, but his administration has offered no actual evidence to suggest that Iran was even close to building a nuclear weapon, the pretext for Saturday’s attack. The situation is disturbingly similar to the last time a Republican president entangled the U.S. in a ‘Forever War’ in the Middle East based on known lies about ‘weapons of mass destruction.’ Iran retaliated with a targeted attack on a US air base in Qatar. ANDREW PEREZ of Rolling Stone discusses his new reporting on the dearth of evidence to justify the administration’s strikes on Iran, Trump’s sudden decision to bomb Iran while trying to negotiate a new nuclear deal with them, and much more. Callers weigh in.

ECONOMIC UPDATE: Making Sense of Trump’s Economic Plan (00:29:00)

This week’s episode of Economic Update features an analysis by Professor Wolff on:
1. How Trump seeks to address the problem of costly American wars and their impact on sharply rising budget deficits,
2. How the rising U.S. debt has led to the loss of the United States “AAA” credit rating,
3. How Trumps response is to seek to slash government spending and raise money by imposing tariffs on the entire world,
4. How this backfires as other countries retaliate, hurting US exports and causing the dollar to lose its appeal as the world’s safest currency,
5. How China’s economic rise is more substantial than the U.S. measures aimed at stopping or slowing that rise,
6. How the declining U.S. empire undermines the U.S. capitalist economy by making it increasingly difficult for CEOs and other corporate leaders in the U.S., households, and the government to prevail over and dominate the U.S. economy and society.

EARTH RIOT RADIO: Natural Disasters are Better Leaders (00:29:00)

We wake up every morning in this caving-in world, and we ask, What Can I Do To Help? And we look for defensive measures against the take-over by white nationalist gangsters. The NO KINGS marches of last Saturday roused our belief that there are alternatives everywhere: political, legal, economic. And we can put that euphoria to good use. But THE EARTH IS COMING! The playing field of everyday life is whirling into a deadly twister made of unrecognizable options. The natural disasters are so numerous that they overlap and create a second world. In this super-ecosystem, our question, What Can I Do? has this first answer: You need to radically evolve. Something beyond humility will start us over.

TUC RADIO: Marilyn Waring: Our economic system assigns no value to peace ” Archive ONE (00:28:55)

Marilyn Waring’s work and inspiring life are described in a documentary film by Terre Nash. I’m bringing back the soundtrack of this film to support a debate on the unquestioned need for economic growth at all cost and on what course to take to end the wars. At age 22 (in 1974) Marilyn Waring became the youngest member of the New Zealand Parliament. She chaired the prestigious Public Expenditures Committee and became familiar with the Gross Domestic Product system and decided to disclose its pathologies in a film, her teachings at AUT University in Auckland and really her life as a feminist economist. The film, Who’s Counting traces her quest to explore how the fate of women and of the earth are irrevocably tied up with the deadly pursuit of economic growth.

Marilyn Waring was shocked and dismayed when she learned that all countries that are members of the UN are forced to keep their books and design their budgets under the system of National Income Accounting. This GDP system counts only cash transactions in the market and recognizes no value other than money. This means there is no value to peace and to the preservation of the environment.

Sally Roesch Wagner died June 11th, 2025, at nearly 83 years old. She is renowned for her deep research into the women’s suffrage movement in the United States, its inspiration from first nations women, and the deep division created by allying with right-wing religious and racist women. Sally recovered the erased history of Matilda Joslyn Gage, an adopted member of an indigenous band who saw true gender equality and who blamed western patriarchal religion for women’s oppression. Sally publicly performed as Gage and as Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She also taught and held a doctorate in Women’s Studies and History of Consciousness.

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: In Praise of (Curiosity-Driven) Research, with Anthony Zador (00:28:00)

With science under attack, researcher Anthony Zador joins me to make the case for its value, especially of curiosity-driven, basic science. We explore the charms of curiosity as a research motivator, federal investment (or not), what distinguishes curiosity-driven research from all the rest, the “curse of knowledge”, debate in the lab, and what’s to love about Gila monster venom and Yellowstone’s thermal pools. “The burden of proof is on us — researchers — to explain why what we do is valuable to society.” ~ Anthony Zador

THE BRADCAST: 6/17/2025 Guest: David Gilbert of WIRED on Trump demand for ethnic cleansing in U.S  (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Donald Trump said he will not call Minnesota’s Democratic Gov. Tim Walz after the political assassination of a Democratic state lawmaker by a far-right Trump supporter. A federal jury found 2020 election denier MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell liable for defaming a voting system company executive. California State Bar panel backed ruling stripping Trump attorney John Eastman of his law license over plot to steal the 2020 election. Federal agents roughed up New York City Comptroller Brad Lander for attempting to help a migrant at court. WIRED journalist DAVID GILBERT explains the U.S. State Department’s restructuring plan and its disturbing new ‘Office of Remigration,’ a sinister far-right codeword for ‘ethnic cleansing’ that would force immigrant U.S. citizens to return to their original countries, and much more.

ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Controlling What’s Controlling You: Breaking Free from Habits, Hangups, and Denial (00:29:00)

THE CHILDREN’S HOUR: Petroglyphs (00:53:00)

Have you ever seen a story carved into a rock? This week on The Children’s Hour, we explore the meaning and magic of petroglyphs – images etched into stone by ancient hands. Our Kids Crew visited Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project, home to more than 60,000 documented carvings, and talked with archaeologist Jerod Roberts, educator Sandy Romero, and volunteer Judy Chaddick. Then we met up with Ranger David Ottaviano from Petroglyph National Monument to learn how these fragile images are preserved. We also heard from Todd Scissons, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer from Acoma Pueblo, about what petroglyphs still mean to Pueblo people today. Come discover how these images are more than just pictures – they’re powerful messages from the past still speaking to us now.

THE BRADCAST: 6/16/2025 Last Weekend Today: Massive ‘No Kings’ Protests; Trump’s Military Parade Flops; Assassination by Trumper in MN (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: It was a bizarre split screen of news over the weekend as some five million Americans attended boisterous, joyful, and largely peaceful ‘No Kings’ anti-Trump and anti-ICE demonstrations. At the same time, Donald Trump threw a sparsely-attended, authoritarian-style birthday parade for himself using the U.S. military. Israel unleashed a full-scale attack against Iran, complicating Trump’s efforts to reconstruct a successor to Obama’s successful nuclear deal with Iran (which Trump stupidly tore up). Israel’s new war forced the administration to recall Voice of America journalists and Iran experts who had been foolishly, unlawfully furloughed. Police captured a long-time Trump supporter who assassinated the top Democratic state lawmaker in Minnesota’s House of Representative and her husband, and gravely wounded another lawmaker on Saturday. Callers weigh in and share their experiences at the ‘No Kings’ protests.

Dubbed the battle of the currents, this dis-information campaign pitted Thomas Edison against Tesla (and his boss, Westinghouse). KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: Under Water Now, Democrats Have to Become the Party of Change

(00:59:48)

There’s a reason the same voters were undecided between Bernie and Trump in 2016. People wanted real change. And in 2024, Democrats walked into a trap. If we recognize the widespread dissatisfaction outside of the well-read coastal metro areas. AND we become the party of change. LAURA FLANDERS AND FRIENDS: “They Targeted Me:” Mayor Ras Baraka on His Arrest, Immigration Rights & Leading New Jersey (00:28:00)

They targeted me because I’m the mayor of the city, says Newark, New Jersey mayor and gubernatorial candidate Ras Baraka. In this tell-all interview with Laura Flanders, the mayor of the states largest city discusses his arrest at Delaney Hall, a new private immigration detention facility in Newark, and why he is a staunch opponent of the Republican immigration agenda and Trumps assertion of federal power. In his tenure as mayor, Baraka has championed progressive programs like guaranteed income, reduced crime and boosted affordable housing. But new challenges lie ahead, as politicians like himself and cities like Newark face retaliation from the Trump administration. Barakas charges have been dropped, but the legal battles are far from over. He recently announced a lawsuit against the acting New Jersey District Attorney Alina Habba and DHS Agent Ricky Patel, alleging false arrest, malicious prosecution and defamation. If elected, he would be the first Black governor in New Jersey and only the fourth Black governor elected in the States. If he’s not elected, he is still a politician to watch as he insists on advancing forward thinking policy, especially in these tough times. THE BRADCAST: 6/11/2025 Guests: Heather Digby Parton and ‘Driftglass’ on Trump deployment of troops in L.A. (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: In six state legislative special elections in three states on Tuesday, Democrats overperformed expectations in five, strongly outpacing their 2024 results. Democratic US Rep. Mikey Sherrill will face Donald Trump-backed MAGA Republican Jack Ciatterelli for the New Jersey governor’s seat. California Gov. Gavin Newsom in a speech excoriated Trump’s federalization of the state’s National Guard troops, describing the tactics as ‘authoritarian’ and ‘dictatorial’, and warned that Trump is now waging war on democracy and the Constitution itself. Salon columnist HEATHER DIGBY PARTON and ‘DRIFTGLASS’, of the ‘Professional Left Podcast,’ discuss Trump’s dumb, dangerous incitement of violence, where all this is headed, and much more, bringing context, history, and hilarity to these disturbing developments.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Time Machine by H. G. Wells  ch.4 (00:25:49)

The Time Machine is a science fiction novella by H. G. Wells, first published in 1895.  To date, the book has been  adapted into at least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It indirectly inspired many more works of fiction in many media. This 32,000 word story is generally credited with the popularisation of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term “time machine”, coined by Wells, is now universally used to refer to such a vehicle. (Wikipedia) The story follows a Victorian scientist, who claims that he has invented a device that enables him to travel through time, and has visited the future. There, he finds the human species has “evolved” into two distinct forms. Above ground live the Eloi—gentle, fairy-like, childish creatures, whose existence appears to be free of struggle. However, another race of beings exists—the Morlocks, underground dwellers who, once subservient, now prey on the feeble, defenseless Eloi. – Summary by Cliff Stone

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Team Trump is attempting to distract from the many failures of the Administration and escalate tensions and fear by deploying military assets to Los Angeles to crack down on largely peaceful protests against ICE roundups of migrants. Trump DHS Sec. Kristi Noem urged Defense Sec. Pete Hegseth to require troops to participate in arrests and detentions, an apparent violation of the law. Protests against the administration’s fascist tactics are expanding coast to coast. US Attorney General Pam Bondi’s brother lost his election to lead the D.C. Bar Association. THE BRADCAST: 6/9/2025 Trump unlawfully federalizes CA National Guard to distract from his own ongoing failures (00:57:30)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: We set the record straight on what is actually happening in Los Angeles, where relatively minor, peaceful weekend demonstrations against Donald Trump’s new ICE quotas for arresting migrants are not ‘riots,’ despite cable TV or social media coverage. Trump is grabbing attention and abusing his authority again, by unlawfully federalizing the California National Guard without the approval of CA Gov. Gavin Newsom. The governor called the actions ‘purposely inflammatory, ‘trying to incite violence,’ and the state is suing to stop it. Trump’s weekend declaration is a power grab, claiming the authority to deploy federal troops in violation of the Posse Comitatus Act ANYWHERE in the country. Callers weigh in.

More fascism…Trump moves to get political control of doctors and scientists. ICE thugs grabbed a teen driving to volleyball practice and the town is outraged. THE BRADCAST: 6/4/2025 Guest: Dr. Brooke Nichols on More Than 300,000 Dead Since Musk, Trump Shutdown of USAID (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projects that Donald Trump’s and Congressional Republicans’ massive budget bill would increase the deficit by $2.4 trillion and cut off health care and food nutrition for up to 14 million low-income Americans, all to pay for huge tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. So naturally the Trump White House and GOP attacked the CBO. Conservative columnist David Brooks compared Elon Musk to genocidal dictators over the 300,000 people who have died globally since Musk’s DOGE dismantled the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Dr. BROOKE NICHOLS of Boston University explains her meticulous database documenting the stunning tally of preventable deaths around the world caused by Trump’s foreign aid shutdown, how it harms Americans here at home, the ‘broken trust’ the U.S. is now facing with other nations, and much more.

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Curiosity in Challenging Racism & Celebrating Juneteenth, with Monique Bryant (00:28:00)

“What about diversity, equity and inclusion is so powerful — and so fearful — that you would want to get rid of it all? That’s where the curiosity comes in.” ~ Moe Bryant How might choosing to be curious help us keep the conversation open, hold onto history that’s being erased, and find moments for celebration, even still?

Monique “Moe” Bryant was my teacher and guide when I took a course called Challenging Racism back in 2015-2016. I had her on the show twice then, once before and once after I’d taken the eye-opening, humble-making, ultimately empowering program.

Given where conversations about diversity, equity and inclusion are now, I thought it was time to have her back.

ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Pinned by the Past: Breaking Free from the Weight of Old Mistakes   (00:29:00)

On this show we are breaking free from the weight of old mistakes by unpinning ourselves from our past. Ever feel like no matter how much you grow, your past keeps showing up like an old playlist you didn’t ask to hear again? You’re finally moving forward – changing your habits, setting boundaries, maybe even feeling hope – but suddenly, wham, a memory, a regret, or a what-if slams into your progress like a closed door. I recently came across this line in a book that hit me right in the heart: I was a butterfly pinned by my wings to the canvas of my mistakes. That image has stuck with me. Because haven’t we all felt like that at some point – frozen, exposed, and unable to fly, not because we cant, but because we’ve been too tightly tethered to the past?

To answer that question, we take a look at the community utility districts that run sewage and water in unincorporated towns all across California. We’ll discuss their problems as well as ways to save them. This show first aired in August 2024.

THE BRADCAST: ‘BradCast’ 6/2/2025 Guest: Legal journo Chris Geidner on SCOTUS ignoring its own precedents (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: In Boulder, CO, a man was charged with federal hate crimes after he used a makeshift flamethrower to attack a demonstration in support of hostages held by Hamas. Dozens of Palestinians were killed near a Gaza aid distribution center, in an attack attributed to the Israeli military. Ukraine launched a massive drone attack that damaged military targets deep inside Russia, after weeks of Russia’s deadly, long-range attacks in Ukraine. The rightwing US Supreme Court declined to hear lawsuits seeking to overturn state laws banning military-style weapons. But the far-right majority overturned its own precedent to allow the Trump Administration to end protected status for half a million refugees from several countries, even while litigation continues. Veteran legal journalist CHRIS GEIDNER of Law Dork explains how the activist rightwingers on SCOTUS are twisting law and precedent to achieve their desired political outcome.

SPIRIT IN ACTION: Sustainability is the Common-sense Destination for Emergency Preparedness

(00:55:00)

Jan Spencer is guest-host today for the sixth time, sharing an episode of Creating A Preferred Future, equipping us further in anticipation of changes we need for a better future. Jan explains why anyone interested in emergency preparedness can “graduate” to an interest in paradigm shift and moving towards sustainability. Preparedness for unplanned disruption is a very prudent idea. Current trends in economics, social well-being, the environment are all on the descent and more consumer culture will only make what we already see worse in many ways. The logical goal of preparedness is sustainability. Today’s show also encourages the listener to organize a site tour in their neighborhood or community to show and tell how preparedness can lead to paradigm shift, and what that transformation can look like, with all its environmental, economic, and social aspects. You can track down many of Jan’s insights via his YouTube videos (https://www.youtube.com/@janspencer9492) and on his website (https://www.suburbanpermaculture.org/podcasts.html), and those in Eugene Oregon may be able to hear his broadcasts via KEPW. LITERATURE ALOUD: The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell ch. 54 & Appendix (00:28:31) Clearly frustrated at the refusal of his contemporaries to recognise the iniquity of society, Tressell’s cast of hypocritical Christians, exploitative capitalists and corrupt councillors provide a backdrop for his main target — the workers who think that a better life is “not for the likes of them”. Hence the title of the book; Tressell paints the workers as “philanthropists” who throw themselves into back-breaking work for poverty wages in order to generate profit for their masters. The hero of the book, Frank Owen, is a socialist who believes that the capitalist system is the real source of the poverty he sees all around him. In vain he tries to convince his fellow workers of his world view, but finds that their education has trained them to distrust their own thoughts and to rely on those of their “betters”. Much of the book consists of conversations between Owen and the others, or more often of lectures by Owen in the face of their jeering; this was presumably based on Tressell’s own experiences. THE BRADCAST: 5/30/2025 Encore: Climate scientist Dr. Peter Gleick on impacts of Trump science ‘censorship’ on national security (00:58:00)

Encore: original airdate 5-21-2025. On today’s ‘BradCast’: The Trump Administration blatantly defied court orders prohibiting the deportation of migrants to third countries they are not from. Newly uncovered documents reveal that Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard’s chief of staff worked to manipulate the conclusions of a national intelligence analysis that contradicted Donald Trump’s lies about Venezuelan migrants, which were used to justify his unlawful invocation of the Alien Enemies Act. A new investigative report also debunked the Trump Administration’s false claims that the deported Venezuelans were criminals. Climate scientist DR. PETER GLEICK explains how the climate crisis threatens national and global security, the Trump Administration’s censoring of science and environmental threats, the scientists working to preserve publicly-funded scientific data, and much more.

EARTH RIOT RADIO:  The Planet Earth Is Back In Town (00:29:00)

Like the Hugh Masekela song Bring Him Back Home, which helped free Nelson Mandela from 27 years in prison, the Earth needs to be loved and returned to the forefront of our personal lives, our civic decisions, and our hope for Peace. Give the Earth so much Love that the imagination of our home becomes where we live again. With the Earth as our leader, we can hallucinate back to what’s real. Imagine our way out of violent products. Yes, the Earth gives us love and asks that we continue life, creating life that, in turn, continues to love and live. Life wants life to live. But the Earth is also powerfully political, giving us Love so that we have natural worlds agent of change. Love gives us the power to be radical. And here at the Sixth Extinction, we need to be radical. Oh, do we ever. Radical – right now.
