ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Taking Ownership of Your Health and Wellness: Shifting from Vanity to Vitality (00:30:00)
On this show we’re diving into a topic that’s close to the bone – literally; taking ownership of your health and wellness by shifting from vanity to vitality. Have you ever found yourself sweating it out at the gym, not for the love of health, but to fit into those jeans from high school? Or perhaps you’ve chosen a salad over a burger, not because you enjoy leafy greens, but because of that looming beach vacation? Taking ownership of your health and wellness isn’t about chasing a number on the scale or squeezing into last year’s shorts – It’s about reclaiming your joy, energy, and freedom. Imagine a life where exercise feels like play, eating well becomes self-care, and you’re motivated by how amazing you feel rather than how you think you should look. It’s time to trade body-shaming for body-celebrating and turn health into your personal happiness project.

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: A Global Minimum Wage=A Stronger World Economy (00:58:59)
The reason we have minimum wage laws is to ensure a basic standard of living. But in America, the federal minimum wage is still what it was in 2009: $7.25. And in developing nations to which big corporations outsource jobs, it’s mere pennies. These are clearly not livable wages. Our guest Professor Lawrence Wittner argues in a widely published article it’s just sound sustainable economics to institute a world-wide minimum wage. Poverty wages do not keep foreign economies strong. And no, consumer prices don’t automatically rise with a global minimum wage. And, in this discussion, he explains how a global minimum wage keeps jobs in America.
AGING MATTERS: A Global Minimum Wage=A Stronger World Economy (00:58:00)
Ageismrefers to prejudice or discrimination against a particular age-group, especially older people. It can have a significant negative impact on physical and mental health, and even lead to premature death among this population.

SEA CHANGE RADIO: John Platt: In Search of The Ivory-Billed Woodpecker (re-broadcast) (00:29:00)
When you visit the World Wildlife Funds list of critically endangered species, the first animals named are large, beloved mammals like the African Forest Elephant and the Eastern Lowland Gorilla. While these majestic creatures tug at our heartstrings, there are also a lot of smaller, more unsung organisms that are in grave risk of extinction, like the lowly freshwater mussel. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to environmental writer, John Platt, the editor of The Revelator to talk about some of the less glamorous animals that have recently been declared extinct or are on the brink of extinction. First, we take a deep dive into the plight of the ivory-billed woodpecker, a regal swamp-dwelling bird whose demise may or may not have been premature. Then we discuss why Hawaii is referred to by some naturalists as the extinction capital of the world, and look at the ethical quandaries presented by the emerging field of resurrection biology, also known as de-extinction.
LAURA FLANDERS AND FRIENDS: Illinois Successfully Ends Cash Bail: Why Is No One Talking About It? (00:00:00)
What happened when Illinois ended cash bail? As Laura’s guests explain, this deeply discriminatory and unjust system puts a ransom on people’s heads, disproportionately impacts Black and Brown people, and favors the wealthy who can buy their freedom while leaving the poor to languish in jail. Bail reform has faced tremendous pushback over the years, but Illinois implemented the first-of-its-kind Pretrial Fairness Act, ending cash bail statewide in 2023. The historic win didn’t happen overnight. In this episode some of those most involved explain what it took and describe the surprising results. Sharone R. Mitchell Jr., the Cook County Chief Public Defender was the lead policy expert for the Coalition to End Money Bond. Mitchell also heads the states’ largest public defender office. State Senator Robert Peters represents Illinois 13th District and was one of the main sponsors of the Pretrial Fairness Act. He chairs the Senate Labor Committee. Bryce Covert followed this important and under-covered story for The Nation magazine. What has Illinois to teach the nation? All that plus Laura’s commentary: Illinois has moved out of the Middle Ages. What’s holding the rest of the nation back?

LITERATURE ALOUD: Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) by Harriet Beecher Stowe ch. 45 (00:24:27)
Among the most banned books in the United States, Uncle Tom’s Cabin or, Life Among the Lowly is a novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe which treats slavery as a central theme. Stowe was a Connecticut-born teacher at the Hartford Female Academy and an active abolitionist. The novel is believed to have had a profound effect on the North’s view of slavery. In fact, when he met Harriet Beecher Stowe, President Lincoln is said to have commented, “So you’re the little lady whose book started the Civil War.” First published on March 20, 1852, the story focuses on the tale of Uncle Tom, a long-suffering black slave, the central character around whose life the other characters—both fellow slaves and slave owners—revolve. The novel depicts the harsh reality of slavery while also showing that Christian love and faith can overcome even something as evil as enslavement of fellow human beings. CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: New Year, Timeless Wisdom (00:28:00)
Happy New Year! I put out a question to listeners: going into the new year, which episodes have stuck with you? What insights, inspiration or wisdom have you carried forward from those conversations? To my surprise — and delight — everyone had a different show that resonated. The variety was startling, not necessarily the shows I would have thought, at all. And going back years! People didn’t always tell me why an episode had stayed with them, simply that it had. So I’ve pulled segments from four of those conversations. These are moments that captured my heart and imagination. They are moments and wisdom I want to carry into the new year.

THE BRADCAST: 1/7/2025 Trouble in Trumpland?: Broligarchs v. MAGA with Ryan Cooper of The American Prospect (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: An extreme windstorm triggered fast-moving wildfires and mass evacuations in Los Angeles. Florida judge Aileen Cannon exercised dubious authority to temporarily block release of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s reports on Donald Trump’s failed attempts to steal the 2020 election and his stolen documents case. A few words on the terror attacks perpetrated by two U.S. citizens on New Year’s Day in New Orleans and Las Vegas, the latter attack carried out by a hardcore Trump supporter. Callers weigh in.

ECONOMIC UPDATE: Capitalism Vs. Democracy REPEAT (00:29:00)
On this week’s show, Prof. Wolff presents an analysis of how and why capitalism is an undemocratic economic system. The first half is devoted to the micro-level, namely to the organization of the enterprise (factory, office or store). Its undemocratic character is exposed using examples and empirical evidence. The second half has a macro-level focus that shows how capitalism’s generation of growing income and wealth inequality impels the employer class (a small numerical minority) to use their money politically. Their practice undermines real democracy leaving only its empty forms. Replay from 2021.05.06

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN January 4, 2025 (00:59:30)
Segment One
We talk with John Nichols, the National Affairs Correspondent for The Nation Magazine. We discussed the presidency and post-presidency of Jimmy Carter, who just passed away. Nichols had interviewed Carter multiple times during Carters presidency, and after, and recollected him as having been a very polite, but strong man. Carter has, in his post-presidency, been outspoken on many issues, including the importance of peace in the Middle East, the dangers posed by adopting oligarchy as government for the United States, bridging the racial divide within the United States, and the concerns of Americans regarding their health, the homes that they increasing cannot afford, and the injustices suffered by many. Carter had a seemingly limitless ex-presidency, and has accomplished many goals after he left office, both domestically and world-wide.
Segment Two
We then catch up with Susan Linn, who has written about the dangers of school aged children use of smart phones while at school. It has become more obvious to educators. She describes many problems that manifest because of this technology. The first is distraction from learning and from attention. We discuss the changes that occur in the brains of people who are constantly using their phones, especially children. The executive function, self-regulation portion of the brain is affected, to the detriment of the user. The fact that this technology is designed to be addictive exacerbates the problems. The owners of the technology, the corporations that build and support it, do not have the well-being of children as their goal.

The second half of the show we discuss Luigi Mangione and how the criminal justice system can often expend a benefit-of-the-doubt to felonious White actors, how that breaks down when class is introduced into the equation, and how infrequently such grace is extended to Black and Brown individuals. Our Way Black History Fact discusses Universal Oil, Gas, and Mining – the country’s first Black-owned oil company.
LITERATURE ALOUD: Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) by Harriet Beecher Stowe ch. 38 (00:25:06)
CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Curiosity in Apes, with Sofia Forss (00:28:00)
“Evolution may seldom select strongly for curiosity,” said Sofia Forss in a conversation that surprised me over and over. Sofia Forss, Ph.D. is an evolutionary biologist at the University of Zurich, specializing in comparative cognition and animal behavior. She’s curious about how curiosity shows up in apes. A fascinating discussion about curiosity and the influence of others, upbringing, and perceptions of risk. What might these findings suggest for apes’ close cousins, we humans? I was surprised and intrigued over and over in this conversation. I think you will be as well.
THE BRADCAST 12/31/2024 Encore: Trump admits he can’t lower grocery prices; Biden commutes 1,500 sentences (00:57:30)
Encore: original airdate 12-12-2024. On today’s ‘BradCast’: President Joe Biden commuted the sentences of some 1,500 people in the largest single-day act of clemency in modern U.S. history. The Justice Department’s Inspector General issued a new report finding that that no undercover FBI employees were involved in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection, completely debunking Republicans’ false claims. During his campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly promised voters that he would ‘immediately’ lower grocery prices, but now admits he has no actual plan to do so. But Biden Administration FTC chair, Lina Khan, has protected consumers by blocking the proposed merger of grocery giants Kroger and Albertsons, while Trump’s FTC nominee vows to abandon Khan’s tough standards. North Carolina’s Republican-controlled legislature used the lame duck session to pass an unprecedented power grab, stripping incoming Democratic statewide office-holders of much of their authority. Happy news about beloved TV legend Dick Van Dyke. Plus Desi Doyen has our new ‘Green News Report.’
