One of those pardoned was one of the subjects of a gripping documentary: Homegrown, from Storyline Media. Alongside two other members of the extremist group, the Proud Boys, filmmaker Michael Premo followed convicted felon, Christopher Quaglin, at home, on the road, and up the steps of the Capitol that day. In this conversation with Flanders, recorded just prior to Trumps inauguration, Premo describes how the film came to be and what he found, including the surprising diversity within the Right-wing groups he followed. LITERATURE ALOUD: Looking Backward 2000-1887 by Edward Bellamy ch.13-14 (00:30:44)
Published in 1888, this short novel focuses on the education of a wealthy man from 1887 who, amidst the labor struggles and wealth inequalities of The Gilded Age, experiences a “Mesmeric sleep” until the year 2000 when he is awakened to see an America transformed by the gradual, non-violent evolution from primitive capitalist exploitation to an advanced cooperative socialism. The novel predicts the radio, the credit card and big box stores as the characters discuss the problems and illogic of dog-eat-dog capitalism and the superior culture of a society focused on the benefit of all rather than the enrichment of a few.

WINGS # 42-24 Peacebuilding in Kenya (00:28:53)
The intense post-election violence of 2007 bankrupted Mary Oyier’s new business. She and other women started talking with youths about their frustrations, then bringing together organizations and civil society networks with government to start addressing the problems among ethnic groups. They built a national network including both religious and civil society groups, and adopted Cobo technology to communicate clearly with government. Oyier says that networking – including between countries, and especially among women – is important for getting new ideas and that it’s essential for peace.

Workers at a Philadelphia Whole Foods Market voted to unionize. Donald Trump unlawfully fired a Democratic member of the National Labor Relations Board, halting the board’s work. Vaccine science denier Bobby Kennedy, Jr. testified in his Senate confirmation hearing for Sec. of Health and Human Services. Climate scientist DR. MICHAEL E. MANN discusses his new book that focuses on the ‘triple threat to humanity’ — the insidious, coordinated campaign of anti-science disinformation that is making it difficult to effectively respond to climate change and pandemic threats — and much more. https://bradblog.com/?cat=675

ALAN WATTS: Alan Watts Opens Up About Religion (00:17:54)
This summarised lecture by Alan Watts is from the Alan Watts Library at https://alanwatts.org. The image of Jesus is owned by the church traditions and authorities. He has been moulded to fit the interests of the church patriarchs for centuries, so much so that the prevailing image of Jesus is now so far removed from what he truly represented. Namely an energy from the future who came to earth to bring illumination and knowledge to humanity. The reason why the Jesus/Jeshua personality came to earth was to create an opening or doorway to a different state of consciousness. He wanted to set an example of the possibilities that are available to each human being. He wanted to hold up a mirror to human beings and remind them of their own divine origin and the dormant potentials they carried within. The potentials for peace, freedom and mastership over oneself. THE BRADCAST: 1/28/2025 Trump Attempts White House Takeover of Congressional Budget Authority (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: The Trump Administration is attempting to unlawfully Cancel Culture pretty much everything. Donald Trump called for dismantling FEMA and withholding disaster aid to California to extort rightwing policy changes. His White House press secretary bizarrely lied about California’s water. The Trump Administration ordered public health agencies like the National Institutes of Health to suspend all research and other programs, stop critical work with the World Health Organization, and more. A Trump Administration memo unconstitutionally ordered an immediate halt to disbursement of federal funds for a vast swath of programs and services affecting millions of Americans. A federal judge has temporarily stayed the order but the chaos and confusion it caused remains. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

So, grab your to-do list (if you haven’t procrastinated on making one), and let’s explore why we put things off and how to overcome this all-too-common hurdle. Because, hey, even a baby step forward is better than a perfectly polished excuse!

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Our 2025 Inauguration Counter-Programming Special is a dark echo of eight years ago. Unfortunately, the update was easier than one might have hoped. Commentary and lessons for this day in U.S. history include, from historian Timothy Snyder: ‘Do not obey in advance. Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do.’ And much more.

LITERATURE ALOUD: Looking Backward 2000-1887 by Edward Bellamy ch.6-7 (00:22:34)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The Trump Administration is explicitly deploying a ‘flood the zone’ strategy, with a surge of executive actions that, with a few exceptions, are obnoxious, sloppy, offensive, and performative, including threatening local officials who don’t comply with upcoming federal roundups of undocumented immigrants, and revoking a 1965 order prohibiting racial discrimination in federal contracting. Salon opinion columnist HEATHER DIGBY PARTON and ‘DRIFTGLASS’ of the ‘Professional Left Podcast’ join us to make sense of this historical moment, from Donald Trump’s pardons of violent January 6 insurrectionists, to the Oligarch Inauguration, corruption and lawlessness already underway, the courageous Episcopalian bishop who pleaded with Trump to show mercy to marginalized people, and much more. In the first half of today’s episode, we discuss the intentional whitewashing of the politics and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King by the Raegan administration to gain a broader appeal to middle America. We also discuss how Dr. Kings image is used and his words are cherry-picked by far-right conservatives to provide a veneer of decency where there often is deep-seated bigotry, fear, and division. In the second half of the show, we discuss what MLKs thoughts would be on hot-button issues of today based on his actual words. We discuss what his views would be on equity vs equality, the teaching of CRT/American history, and Affirmative Action. Our Way Black History Fact is Dr. Kings Letter from a Birmingham Jail.

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: New Year, Timeless Wisdom (00:28:00)
Happy New Year! I put out a question to listeners: going into the new year, which episodes have stuck with you? What insights, inspiration or wisdom have you carried forward from those conversations? To my surprise — and delight — everyone had a different show that resonated. The variety was startling, not necessarily the shows I would have thought, at all. And going back years! People didn’t always tell me why an episode had stayed with them, simply that it had. So I’ve pulled segments from four of those conversations. These are moments that captured my heart and imagination. They are moments and wisdom I want to carry into the new year. “I want to see you listening!” ~ John L. Jackson, Jr.
THE BRADCAST: 1/21/2025 Trump’s Day 1 Assault on America: Pretend ‘national emergencies’, Executive Order-apalooza, and more (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: With the corrupt Trump Presidency underway, the first convicted felon, adjudicated rapist and adjudicated insurrectionist to be sworn in as President of the United States has deployed a ‘flood the zone’ strategy, issuing a flood of executive actions, including those that try to dismantle key federal policies governing civil rights, human rights, immigration, public health, Census accuracy, climate change, and much more. Trump also issued blanket pardons for 1,500 insurrectionists from January 6, 2021, including those who violently attacked police and leaders of far-right paramilitary groups Proud Boys and Oathkeepers. Trump now has his own domestic paramilitary. Also today: inspiring words from Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King in his 1967 ‘Blueprint’ speech. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Taking Ownership of Your Health and Wellness: Shifting from Vanity to Vitality (00:30:00)
On this show we’re diving into a topic that’s close to the bone – literally; taking ownership of your health and wellness by shifting from vanity to vitality. Have you ever found yourself sweating it out at the gym, not for the love of health, but to fit into those jeans from high school? Or perhaps you’ve chosen a salad over a burger, not because you enjoy leafy greens, but because of that looming beach vacation? Taking ownership of your health and wellness isn’t about chasing a number on the scale or squeezing into last year’s shorts – it’s about reclaiming your joy, energy, and freedom. Imagine a life where exercise feels like play, eating well becomes self-care, and you’re motivated by how amazing you feel rather than how you think you should look. It’s time to trade body-shaming for body-celebrating and turn health into your personal happiness project.

THE BRADCAST: 1/20/2025 2025 Inauguration Counter-Programming Special: A touchstone with reality as the ‘American carnage’ begins again (00:58:00)

THE PROGRESSIVE PAGE-TURNER: David Noll – Vigilante Nation (00:30:00)
Laws allowing citizens to either enforce the law themselves or look the other way when violence occurs have been around since the founding of our nation. New laws passed in red states are bringing these types of statutes back. After Roe was overturned the abortion ban in Texas included a bounty hunter clause that would allow vigilantes to enforce the law. This is the sort of alliance between private citizens and the state that allowed the reign of terror by the KKK to flourish. But blue states are not entirely without weapons in this war for the soul of our democracy. In this episode I talk with David Noll, author of Vigilante Nation.

Segment One
We talk with Mel Goodman, a senior fellow at the Center for International Policy. We discuss Biden’s farewell speech, and reference to the impending oligarchy in the US, due to Trump’s presidency. We discuss the actions of Russia, China, North Korea, and the nations of the Middle East, particularly Israel and Iran.
Segment Two
We then catch up with Mark Joseph Stern, from Slate. We discuss the Laken Riley Bill, an anti-immigration bill that has a huge impact on how immigrants will be treated. It provides for indefinite detention and deportation for people who may be legally in the country, for no reason than that someone has accused them of some illegal action. It applies to minors, and it allows local police and local judges to make decisions that should be made on a national level. It can bring about travel bans against whole countries because of suspicions about one individual who may be deported back to his/her home country, despite that country not willing to accept them back

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: The Trashing of Tastes: When Did It Begin? (00:56:28)
When did politics and trash TV become one in the same? According to author Ross Benes, no question: it was the 1990s. As one reviewer said: this book helps to explain the election of Donald Trump in ways that most strictly scholarly analyses cannot capture. Such bizarre spectacles as were on the Jerry Springer Show connected with those millions who feel society has it out for them. They celebrated the elimination of rules. And being deplorable is, to these folks, a badge of honor. In the process this has enabled todays unprecedented concentration of wealth and power.

He has been special adviser to three United Nations Secretary Generals and currently serves under Secretary General Antonio Gutierrez. The quote posted on Trumps social media came from a talk and debate given by Prof. Sachs on October 22, 2024, at the prestigious Cambridge Union in England. In spite of the extraordinary analysis of causes and pretexts of wars presented by Sachs, and some of his provocative statements, the speech remained unnoticed for 2 1/2 months until Donald Trump brought it to Truth Social and world media discovered it there. Friends, colleagues and students of Jeffrey Sachs were just as surprised and also at a loss how to explain the sudden interest from the Trump Camp.

TUC RADIO: Alex Carey – Corporations and Propaganda, parts 1&2 (00:58:00)
Alex Carey wrote that the people of the US have been subjected to an unparalleled, expensive, 3/4 century long propaganda effort designed to expand corporate rights by undermining democracy and destroying the unions. The 20th century, he wrote, is marked by three historic developments: the growth of democracy via the expansion of the franchise, the growth of corporations, and the growth of propaganda to protect corporations from democracy. Careys unique view of US history goes back to World War I and ends with the Reagan era. Noam Chomsky dedicated his book Manufacturing Consent to the memory of Alex Carey. Chomsky says that the Australian sociologist would have written the definitive history of propaganda in the US, had he lived to complete his work. This is a fairly complex production with many voices, historic sound clips, and source material. The program has been used by writers and students of history and propaganda. Alex Carey: Taking the Risk out of Democracy, Corporate Propaganda VS Freedom and Liberty with a foreword by Noam Chomsky was published by the University of Illinois Press in 1995.
THOM HARTMANN Best of 1 Hour: Biden’s Warning to America (00:58:00)

SEA CHANGE RADIO: SF Chronicle Meteorologist Anthony Edwards on the LA Fires (00:29:00)
California kicked off 2025 with some of the most devastating wildfires in the state’s history. Thousands have already lost their homes, dozens have been killed, and as of today the largest of the Los Angeles area fires is only 14% contained. This week on Sea Change Radio we speak with meteorologist Anthony Edwards of the San Francisco Chronicle to learn more about what caused the fires, how climate change is making events like these more commonplace and inevitable than ever, and what we can all do to better prepare for them. Then, we take a few minutes to look at the burgeoning industry of amateur meteorology in the ski industry and the impact that the growth in untrained meteorological professionals is having on Edwards’s job, and on the field in general.
LAURA FLANDERS AND FRIENDS: Jimmy Carters Vision for Peace, Palestine & the Planet: A Legacy Under Attack? (00:28:00)
What is being left out of the conversation when it comes to Jimmy Carter, and why are many of his significant achievements under attack today? He created a national energy policy that married conservation with developing alternatives and getting off oil, passed the Superfund Act, created the Federal Department of Education and negotiated the Panama Canal treaty ” a deal that Trump slammed earlier this week as he threatened to regain control of Panama. In this episode, Laura is on the ground in Georgia for Carters funeral events, and speaks with people who came from all around the country to pay their respects. How are Americans remembering the 39th president? Many obituaries have excluded the October Surprise by which the release of US hostages held in Iran was delayed until Ronald Reagans election day, and Carters critiques of Israeli violations of international law and his warning that cutting off non-violent options for Palestinians under Israels occupation would inevitably explode, making both Israel and the Palestinians less secure. What should we make of the notion that he failed during his presidency? Join us as we explore why Carters legacy is so relevant today. Interviewees include Richard Li, Vice President of the Chinese American Business Association of Atlanta; Karin Ryan, the Senior Policy Advisor on Human Rights and Special Representative on Women and Girls at The Carter Center; and Greg Waddle, President of IATSE Local 479. All that, plus a commentary from Laura.

THE BRADCAST: 1/16/2025 Fires, Liars, and Oligarchy Rising; Garland nixes execution drug (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: This is our final ‘BradCast’ of the Biden era. Vile Congressional Republicans and rightwing media outlets are doubling down on their threats to withhold disaster aid from California, even though the state returns five times more revenue to the federal government than it receives. Donald Trump’s nominees to head the Energy Department and EPA are fossil-fueled climate change ‘delayers’. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland withdrew federal approval for the drug used in federal executions. In a farewell address to the nation, President Joe Biden warned the nation of a powerful ‘Tech-Industrial Complex,’ and that ‘an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy, our basic rights and freedoms,’ and much more. This week, as Los Angeles burns from climate change-fueled winds in climate-change fueled dry conditions, as thousands of homes are destroyed, and the air is filled with toxic smoke, Ill tell you just how close I came to the fires and how my community of North Pasadena and Altadena is picking up the pieces. Ill bring you the stories of those impacted, including Daisy Trejo, a young Mexican American resident of North Pasadena who lost her family home where she lived with her husband Salvador and multiple family members and from where she ran her business. On today’s ‘BradCast’: Israel and Hamas have agreed to a cease-fire and the return of some hostages, officials say, a potential breakthrough to ending the long, horrific war in Gaza. Senate Republicans scheduled six cabinet confirmation hearings simultaneously on Wednesday, thwarting public oversight of Donald Trump’s nominees. In her confirmation hearing for U.S. Attorney General, Trump’s personal attorney, former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, dodged questions, refused to say if she would target Trump’s political opponents or whether President Biden won the 2020 election, and much more. Former Justice Department prosecutor RANDALL D. ELIASON of George Washington University Law explains Trump’s get-out-of-jail-free sentencing in New York for 34 felony convictions over his hush-money payments to a porn star, what it all means, and his concerns about the justice system under the incoming Trump Administration.

We also discuss his unhinged behavior and what more we have to do to combat his policies. Our Way Black History Fact covers the first Black Medal of Honor recipient, Sgt. CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: How to Be a Color Wizard, with Jason Logan (00:28:00)
Jason Logan is an artist and ink maker. But he doesn’t just “make ink”. He concocts magical potions from found ingredients. He forages, often in urban environments, everything from the berries you might expect, to scrap metal, cigarette butts and dry wall. It’s as if he looks at the world with one big “What if…?” I had a pile of germanium blossoms drying on the counter and another of crazy-looking, spiky acorn caps. A bowl of rusty nails and pipes soaked in vinegar and salt on the balcony. That’s where curiosity and Jason Logan had taken me. “I think the most significant job that I have is to help people see with new eyes.” – Jason Logan
THE BRADCAST: 1/14/2025 Hegseth Faces Democratic Fire in Contentious Senate SecDef Nomination Hearing (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘The BradCast’: Fox ‘News’ weekend host Pete Hegseth faced a tough grilling from Democrats in a contentious U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on Tuesday, as they focused on Hegseth’s astonishing lack of qualifications to lead the massive Dept. of Defense, disqualifying allegations of sexual assault and public drunkenness, and much more. Hegseth refused prior meetings with Democratic Senators, who say the FBI failed to interview critical witnesses. Senate Republicans have purposely scheduled seven confirmation hearings on Wednesday, making public oversight of Donald Trump’s cabinet nominees virtually impossible. Firefighters have gained some ground against the catastrophic Los Angeles Fires as another round of dangerous high winds threatens the region. Plus Desi Doyen has our new ‘Green News Report.’

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: A Global Minimum Wage=A Stronger World Economy (00:58:59)
The reason we have minimum wage laws is to ensure a basic standard of living. But in America, the federal minimum wage is still what it was in 2009: $7.25. And in developing nations to which big corporations outsource jobs, it’s mere pennies. These are clearly not livable wages. Our guest Professor Lawrence Wittner argues in a widely published article it’s just sound sustainable economics to institute a world-wide minimum wage. Poverty wages do not keep foreign economies strong. And no, consumer prices don’t automatically rise with a global minimum wage. And, in this discussion, he explains how a global minimum wage keeps jobs in America.
AGING MATTERS: A Global Minimum Wage=A Stronger World Economy (00:58:00)
Ageismrefers to prejudice or discrimination against a particular age-group, especially older people. It can have a significant negative impact on physical and mental health, and even lead to premature death among this population.
Patricia DAntonio, MS MBA, Executive Director, National Center to Reframe Aging, www.reframingaging.org, talks about how ageism impacts our society, why raising awareness of an implicit bias toward older people is needed, and how the National Center is rethinking aging in America.

TUC RADIO: The new cold war that the U.S. unleashed against China – Yanis Varoufakis (00:29:00)
Yanis Varoufakis is a former finance minister of Greece, university teacher, author in economics and technology, and engaged in European politics. A video of this candid and fact filled talk before a Chinese audience has recently surfaced. How did China, on the flimsiest of pretexts, end up in the crosshairs of both Biden and Trump? Varoufakis reveals the related danger to the U.S. financial system that apparently is so serious that this new Cold War might even turn into a shooting war. The video of this talk was recorded just before the U.S. November 2024 elections, and it is 12 precious minutes longer than this radio program. I highly recommend you find it on YouTube under the title The new cold war that the United States unleashed against China – Yanis Varoufakis.

SEA CHANGE RADIO: John Platt: In Search of The Ivory-Billed Woodpecker (re-broadcast) (00:29:00)
When you visit the World Wildlife Funds list of critically endangered species, the first animals named are large, beloved mammals like the African Forest Elephant and the Eastern Lowland Gorilla. While these majestic creatures tug at our heartstrings, there are also a lot of smaller, more unsung organisms that are in grave risk of extinction, like the lowly freshwater mussel. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to environmental writer, John Platt, the editor of The Revelator to talk about some of the less glamorous animals that have recently been declared extinct or are on the brink of extinction. First, we take a deep dive into the plight of the ivory-billed woodpecker, a regal swamp-dwelling bird whose demise may or may not have been premature. Then we discuss why Hawaii is referred to by some naturalists as the extinction capital of the world, and look at the ethical quandaries presented by the emerging field of resurrection biology, also known as de-extinction.
LAURA FLANDERS AND FRIENDS: Illinois Successfully Ends Cash Bail: Why Is No One Talking About It? (00:00:00)
What happened when Illinois ended cash bail? As Laura’s guests explain, this deeply discriminatory and unjust system puts a ransom on people’s heads, disproportionately impacts Black and Brown people, and favors the wealthy who can buy their freedom while leaving the poor to languish in jail. Bail reform has faced tremendous pushback over the years, but Illinois implemented the first-of-its-kind Pretrial Fairness Act, ending cash bail statewide in 2023. The historic win didn’t happen overnight. In this episode some of those most involved explain what it took and describe the surprising results. Sharone R. Mitchell Jr., the Cook County Chief Public Defender was the lead policy expert for the Coalition to End Money Bond. Mitchell also heads the states’ largest public defender office. State Senator Robert Peters represents Illinois 13th District and was one of the main sponsors of the Pretrial Fairness Act. He chairs the Senate Labor Committee. Bryce Covert followed this important and under-covered story for The Nation magazine. What has Illinois to teach the nation? All that plus Laura’s commentary: Illinois has moved out of the Middle Ages. What’s holding the rest of the nation back?

LITERATURE ALOUD: Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) by Harriet Beecher Stowe ch. 45 (00:24:27)
Among the most banned books in the United States, Uncle Tom’s Cabin or, Life Among the Lowly is a novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe which treats slavery as a central theme. Stowe was a Connecticut-born teacher at the Hartford Female Academy and an active abolitionist. The novel is believed to have had a profound effect on the North’s view of slavery. In fact, when he met Harriet Beecher Stowe, President Lincoln is said to have commented, “So you’re the little lady whose book started the Civil War.” First published on March 20, 1852, the story focuses on the tale of Uncle Tom, a long-suffering black slave, the central character around whose life the other characters—both fellow slaves and slave owners—revolve. The novel depicts the harsh reality of slavery while also showing that Christian love and faith can overcome even something as evil as enslavement of fellow human beings.

Florida judge Aileen Cannon exercised dubious authority to temporarily block release of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s reports on Donald Trump’s failed attempts to steal the 2020 election and his stolen documents case. New York appeals court rejected Trump’s attempt to block sentencing in his felony hush money conviction. Disgraced Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani held in contempt of court for failing to respond to two election workers he defamed. RYAN COOPER of The American Prospect explains the newest ‘MAGA Civil War’ between Trump’s anti-immigration MAGA followers and the ‘Bro-ligarchs,’ Big Tech billionaires like Elon Musk who use the H-1B work visa program to import foreign workers. Cooper also delves into Musk’s pretense of ‘free speech,’ and much more. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

ECONOMIC UPDATE: Capitalism Vs. Democracy REPEAT (00:29:00)
On this week’s show, Prof. Wolff presents an analysis of how and why capitalism is an undemocratic economic system. The first half is devoted to the micro-level, namely to the organization of the enterprise (factory, office or store). Its undemocratic character is exposed using examples and empirical evidence. The second half has a macro-level focus that shows how capitalism’s generation of growing income and wealth inequality impels the employer class (a small numerical minority) to use their money politically. Their practice undermines real democracy leaving only its empty forms. Replay from 2021.05.06

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN January 4, 2025 (00:59:30)
Segment One
We talk with John Nichols, the National Affairs Correspondent for The Nation Magazine. We discussed the presidency and post-presidency of Jimmy Carter, who just passed away. Nichols had interviewed Carter multiple times during Carters presidency, and after, and recollected him as having been a very polite, but strong man. Carter has, in his post-presidency, been outspoken on many issues, including the importance of peace in the Middle East, the dangers posed by adopting oligarchy as government for the United States, bridging the racial divide within the United States, and the concerns of Americans regarding their health, the homes that they increasing cannot afford, and the injustices suffered by many. Carter had a seemingly limitless ex-presidency, and has accomplished many goals after he left office, both domestically and world-wide.
Segment Two
We then catch up with Susan Linn, who has written about the dangers of school aged children use of smart phones while at school. It has become more obvious to educators. She describes many problems that manifest because of this technology. The first is distraction from learning and from attention. We discuss the changes that occur in the brains of people who are constantly using their phones, especially children. The executive function, self-regulation portion of the brain is affected, to the detriment of the user. The fact that this technology is designed to be addictive exacerbates the problems. The owners of the technology, the corporations that build and support it, do not have the well-being of children as their goal.

Joining us for that conversation is Marisa Holmes, author of the recently released book Organizing Occupy Wall Street: This Is Just Practice and director of All Day All Week: An Occupy Wall Street Story which looks at the takeover of Zuccotti Park in New York City in September 2011. Previously she was a leader at the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute. Award-winning journalist Amir Khafagy returns to co-host this episode. Our guests explore the links between economic inequality and authoritarianism and ask how far we’ve come as a nation to create structural, policy and practice-based changes on the economic front. LITERATURE ALOUD: Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) by Harriet Beecher Stowe ch. 39 (00:22:33)
The first half of today’s show sees us discussing Gov. Mike Parson of Missouri and his decision-making discrepancies when it comes to a case of pardoning a White officer convicted of wrongfully killing a Black man, and failing to pardon a Black inmate on death row with considerable doubt cast on his case. We connect the idea of White supremacist institutions to this governor to better illustrate the concept for those who deny that White supremacy exists. The second half of the show we discuss Luigi Mangione and how the criminal justice system can often expend a benefit-of-the-doubt to felonious White actors, how that breaks down when class is introduced into the equation, and how infrequently such grace is extended to Black and Brown individuals. Our Way Black History Fact discusses Universal Oil, Gas, and Mining – the country’s first Black-owned oil company.

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Curiosity in Apes, with Sofia Forss (00:28:00)
“Evolution may seldom select strongly for curiosity,” said Sofia Forss in a conversation that surprised me over and over. Sofia Forss, Ph.D. is an evolutionary biologist at the University of Zurich, specializing in comparative cognition and animal behavior. She’s curious about how curiosity shows up in apes. A fascinating discussion about curiosity and the influence of others, upbringing, and perceptions of risk. What might these findings suggest for apes’ close cousins, we humans? I was surprised and intrigued over and over in this conversation. I think you will be as well.
THE BRADCAST 12/31/2024 Encore: Trump admits he can’t lower grocery prices; Biden commutes 1,500 sentences (00:57:30)
Encore: original airdate 12-12-2024. On today’s ‘BradCast’: President Joe Biden commuted the sentences of some 1,500 people in the largest single-day act of clemency in modern U.S. history. The Justice Department’s Inspector General issued a new report finding that that no undercover FBI employees were involved in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection, completely debunking Republicans’ false claims. During his campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly promised voters that he would ‘immediately’ lower grocery prices, but now admits he has no actual plan to do so. But Biden Administration FTC chair, Lina Khan, has protected consumers by blocking the proposed merger of grocery giants Kroger and Albertsons, while Trump’s FTC nominee vows to abandon Khan’s tough standards. North Carolina’s Republican-controlled legislature used the lame duck session to pass an unprecedented power grab, stripping incoming Democratic statewide office-holders of much of their authority. Happy news about beloved TV legend Dick Van Dyke. Plus Desi Doyen has our new ‘Green News Report.’
