SEA CHANGE RADIO: Deirdre Mask: Addressing Addresses (00:29:00)
What does naming and re-naming streets, buildings, airports, and even bodies of water say about us as a people? Whether a name inspires, entertains, or haunts us, there’s power in assigning words to people, places, and things. We can see it unfolding right before our eyes with the current US administration renaming key landmarks. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to Deirdre Mask, the author of The Address Book: What Street Addresses Reveal About Identity, Race, Wealth, and Power. We learn about the history of attributing names and numbers to roads and houses, look at how important seemingly obvious innovations like zip codes are, and discuss the socio-political impact of things named after confederate leaders.
LAURA FLANDERS AND FRIENDS: Police Violence Against Latinos: The Shocking Data We Now Know (00:28:00)
You wouldn’t know it from the data, but Latinos are the second most likely demographic to be killed by law enforcement in the U.S, relative to their population. We only have these statistics now thanks to the work of La Raza Database Research Project, a group of volunteers in Southern California who are bringing awareness to systematic police violence against the Latino population. They estimate that almost 6,500 Latinos have been killed by police between 2000 and 2022 ” but the data has been missing until this moment. In this unusual installment of our monthly Meet the BIPOC Press series, Laura and Senior Producer Jeremiah Cothren sit down with LF&F Social Justice Reporting Fellow, Roberto Camacho, who interviewed members of the Research Project to figure out why Latinos are so frequently misrepresented. Camacho also spoke with the mother and sister of Csar Antonio Rodriguez, a young man tragically killed by the Long Beach Police Dept in 2017 and misidentified in police records. Camacho is a Chicano multimedia journalist focusing on criminal justice reform, immigration and Chicano/Latino issues. He originally reported on this story for Palabra.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell Ch.2, pt. 2 (00:20:59)
Clearly frustrated at the refusal of his contemporaries to recognise the iniquity of society, Tressell’s cast of hypocritical Christians, exploitative capitalists and corrupt councillors provide a backdrop for his main target — the workers who think that a better life is “not for the likes of them”. Hence the title of the book; Tressell paints the workers as “philanthropists” who throw themselves into back-breaking work for poverty wages in order to generate profit for their masters. The hero of the book, Frank Owen, is a socialist who believes that the capitalist system is the real source of the poverty he sees all around him. In vain he tries to convince his fellow workers of his world view, but finds that their education has trained them to distrust their own thoughts and to rely on those of their “betters”. Much of the book consists of conversations between Owen and the others, or more often of lectures by Owen in the face of their jeering; this was presumably based on Tressell’s own experiences.(Summary by Tadhg)

THE BRADCAST: 2/26/2025 The Ongoing Government Waste, Fraud and Abuse by Trump, Musk and the DOGE Bros (00:57:30)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: Donald Trump and Elon Musk are gaslighting the nation, as their DOGE Bros unlawfully cancel contracts and lay off workers, pretending to cut ‘waste, fraud and abuse while failing to find any actual evidence of any fraud or abuse (other than their own), and lying about it to the public. Federal contractor Musk awarded his own company, SpaceX, a massive new federal contract with the FAA. Musk also called for impeaching judges who rule against the Trump Administration. Trump’s EPA is trying to roll back the scientific ‘endangerment finding’ on climate change that provides the legal foundation underpinning federal climate policies and regulations. CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Feed Your Brain, with Kimberley Wilson (00:28:00)
Psychologist Kimberley Wilson says we habitually consume a diet that is depriving our brains of nutrients — and that has all sorts of consequences for our health and well-being. She focuses on “psychology, mental health, food, and everything in between” and I wanted to know how curiosity might fit into that mix. “Starting from first principles: the brain is a physical organ and if you want it to function well, it needs to be healthy — and nutrition is a part of that.” ~ Kimberley Wilson

ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Anxiety or Excitement? Mastering Your Minds Balancing Act (00:30:00)
On this show we’re cracking open the psychology of emotions, specifically the fine line between anxiety and excitement. Have you ever found yourself on the edge of a thrilling adventure, heart racing, palms sweaty, only to wonder: Am I anxious or just excited? If so, you’re not alone. Anxiety and excitement are emotional doppelgngers, mirroring each other in physical symptom – rapid heartbeat, fluttering stomach, and that all-too-familiar rush of adrenaline. But here’s the twist: our mind plays the role of narrator, deciding whether this moment is a threat to be feared or an opportunity to be embraced. And once we slap a label on it, we start acting accordingly. Anxiety gets thrown around far too often, and when were quick to diagnose every feeling of nervous energy as anxiety, we inadvertently give it more power than it deserves.

THE PROGRESSIVE PAGE TURNER: Vigilante Nation – How state sponsored terror threatens our democracy (00:30:00)
Laws allowing citizens to either enforce the law themselves or look the other way when violence occurs have been around since the founding of our nation. New laws passed in red states are bringing these types of statutes back. After Roe was overturned the abortion ban in Texas included a bounty hunter clause that would allow vigilantes to enforce the law. This is the sort of alliance between private citizens and the state that allowed the reign of terror by the KKK to flourish. But blue states are not entirely without weapons in this war for the soul of our democracy. In this episode I talk with David Noll, author of Vigilante Nation.

THE BRADCAST:Why Does Trump Want to Destroy the Federal Government? What’s in it for him? (00:57:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: Donald Trump’s top campaign donor, billionaire Elon Musk, and his team of DOGE Bros have escalated their rampage across the federal government, dismantling the non-partisan civil service and hollowing out key federal agencies, which conveniently halts oversight of Musk’s government contracts and regulated businesses. But what’s in it for Trump? Mountains of evidence show that Musk is lying and is not cutting ‘waste, fraud and abuse.’ Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the Trump Administration is focused on ‘reprivatizing the economy,’ as outlined in the Project 2025 manifesto. By why does Trump want to seemingly dismantle seemingly every federal agency? Callers weigh in.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN (00:59:30)
Segment One
We begin the show with Joe Jaworski, former mayor of Galveston Texas. We discuss Texas’ push for school vouchers, and how the Governor has touted them, despite their cost, and their effect on the public schools in Texas. We also discuss the lawsuits stemming from the 2021 Freeze in Texas, which are still pending.
Segment Two
We then catch up with Bill Curry, a former White House counsel to Bill Clinton, and Laura Jedeed, a free-lance journalist who writes about the far right in the US. We discuss immigration, and the failure of the Democrats to deal with it when they had majorities. Now, the Republicans have used immigration as a way to advance their power, and to reinforce their fascist agenda, by way of deportations, threats, and allowing Trump to refer to himself as a King.
As a result, budgets of Federal Agencies are being cut, to seek ways to finance the tax cut he promised the one percent class. First Amendment rights are being trampled. Trump has (shockingly) also adopted Putin’s language in public. It has become clear that the only country that Russia has successfully invaded, is in fact, the United States.

SEA CHANGE RADIO: Scott Hechinger: We (Still) Have Rights! (00:29:00)
An implicit assumption within the structure of the American justice system is the notion that punishment is productive. Research shows, however, that locking people up does not address the underlying causes for most criminal behavior ” in fact it actually exacerbates the likelihood of reoffending. With 95% of incarcerated people expected to reenter our communities, it seems pretty clear that our punitive practices are decidedly unproductive. This week on Sea Change Radio, we welcome back to the show Scott Hechinger, a civil rights lawyer, former public defender, and the current Executive Director of the nonprofit advocacy group, Zealous. We talk about the set of informational films that his organization has recently produced, discuss the fight that lies ahead for immigrants, and look at the measures that are being taken by the current federal administration to push for more capital punishment.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Iron Heel by Jack London – Chapter 4 (00:16:26)
Published in 1908, this is a novel about a socialist revolution that was crushed for years by an oligarchy of wealth before ultimately reviving and building a more just and compassionate world. Portrayed as an illicit revolutionary journal written by Avis Everhard, London chooses a woman to narrate the great need for social justice, the progress of the revolution, its rationale and her sometimes starry-eyed love for the main character Ernest Everhard. Written after London was jailed for participating in a jobs march, this short and action-packed novel is London’s most detailed outline of his socialist views and the logic of a socialist revolution. Part political novel, part dystopian fiction, part speculative fiction, The Iron Heel also includes historically factual footnotes making it a unique textual hybrid.

Trump appears to be taking the side of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin against Ukraine and our longtime European allies. At least nine senior Justice Department prosecutors have resigned rather than carry out improper orders by the Trump Administration, including a directive to engage in an unlawful quid-pro-quo by dismissing a corruption case against NYC Mayor Eric Adams. Veteran federal prosecutor RANDALL D. ELIASON explains the case, the controversy, why the resignations are an ‘earth-shattering event’ for the Justice Department, and what it means for the criminal justice system going forward.

TUC RADIO: Netanyahu and Trump – Who Set a Trap for Whom – with Alastair Crooke (00:29:00)
When Judge Andrew Napolitano set up this interview with Alastair Crooke on Monday, Feb. 10, 2025, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu had just spent a week in Washington, DC, meeting with donors, Congressional leaders, and military personnel at the Pentagon. When Netanyahu and Trump finally met and had their joint press conference, many observers in the audience wondered who had the upper hand – in other words: who set a trap for whom. And when the world heard for the first time of Trumps plan to take over Gaza and expel the Palestinians it was unclear whose idea that was and who benefits. Maybe there is nobody better prepared to make some educated guesses about the hidden interests than the former British diplomat Alastair Crooke. He was a ranking figure in both British Intelligence with MI6 and European Union diplomacy. SEA CHANGE RADIO: Dr. Keneiloe Molopyane: Cradle of Humankind (00:29:00)
Those of us who studied anthropology in the latter half of the 20th century most likely learned that the birthplace of humankind was East African countries such as Tanzania and Kenya. But for much of that same period, the apartheid regime in South Africa largely prohibited archaeological excavations, at least in part because it didn’t want to unearth any evidence that Blacks and Whites shared common ancestors. This week on Sea Change Radio, we take a look at some of the stunning archaeological discoveries that have emerged from South Africa over the past fifteen years. Our guest today isDr. Keneiloe Molopyane, an archeologist who leads research in an area known as the Cradle of Humankind. In our wide-ranging discussion with Dr. Molopyane, we get a quick anthropology lesson, learn more about discoveries from the region, and explore the historical context of these prehistorical finds.

In this special report, Laura Flanders & Friends correspondents Chelsea Higgs Wise and Lewis Raven Wallace head to Craigsville to learn about how the town is struggling, possible solutions from locals, and the larger questions around our countrys prison industrial complex. How can small, rural communities be supported in a sustainable transition away from a carceral economy? LITERATURE ALOUD: Looking Backward 2000-1887 by Edward Bellamy ch.28 (00:39:22)
Published in 1888, this short novel focuses on the education of a wealthy man from 1887 who, amidst the labor struggles and wealth inequalities of The Gilded Age, experiences a “Mesmeric sleep” until the year 2000 when he is awakened to see an America transformed by the gradual, non-violent evolution from primitive capitalist exploitation to an advanced cooperative socialism. The novel predicts the radio, the credit card and big box stores as the characters discuss the problems and illogic of dog-eat-dog capitalism and the superior culture of a society focused on the benefit of all rather than the enrichment of a few.

TED TALK: Nick Hanauer – Capitalism’s Dirty Little Secret (00:17:03)
Rising inequality and growing political instability are the direct result of decades of bad economic theory, says entrepreneur Nick Hanauer. In a visionary talk, he dismantles the mantra that “greed is good” — an idea he describes as not only morally corrosive, but also scientifically wrong — and lays out a new theory of economics powered by reciprocity and cooperation.
THE BRADCAST: 2/12/2025 Guest: Debra Dicks Maxwell of the NC NAACP on 2024’s last unsettled election (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: The Trump Administration is blatantly violating freedom of the press and their First Amendment rights after the White House (temporarily?) banned venerable news organization AP. Defense Secretary Hegseth evicted major news organizations from the Defense Department, giving their offices to rightwing MAGA media instead. Trump fired the Inspector General of US AID in retaliation for releasing a new report revealing the vast, global, deadly costs of shutting down the agency. In North Carolina, a Republican judge is still suing to overturn his narrow election loss last November by tossing out the ballots of more than 60,000 voters on specious grounds, and trying to get an unprecedented ‘do over’ election. The President of the North Carolina NAACP, DEBRA DICKS MAXWELL, explains the elements of the case, and the stakes for the state and the nation. |

ALAN WATTS: Conquering Fear (00:14:32)
Conquering Fear by Alan Watts. Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was a British writer and lecturer who interpreted and popularized Eastern philosophy and religion for a Western audience. Watts wrote more than 25 books and articles on subjects important to Eastern and Western religion, introducing the then-burgeoning youth culture to The Way of Zen (1957), one of the first bestselling books on Buddhism. In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), Watts proposed that Buddhism could be thought of as a form of psychotherapy and not a religion. He considered Nature, Man, and Woman (1958) to be, “from a literary point of view—the best book I have ever written.” He also explored human consciousness and psychedelics in the essay “The New Alchemy” (1958) and in the book The Joyous Cosmology (1962).

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Resolved: Curiosity Is Good for Debate, with David Trigaux (00:28:00)
If you came across something that promises to offer students “evidence-driven, rigorously tested ideas that consider alternative perspectives” wouldn’t you be interested? That’s how I felt as I learned more about Washington Urban Debate League. WUDL uses debate — specifically debate about current public policy issues — to make transformative opportunities available for public school students in the Washington, D.C. area. Research shows that debate teaches students how to analyze, explore and understand the world around them, while it hones additional skills like research, critical thinking, and communication. Sounds like a curiosity enterprise to me!
“Almost all formats of debate, and especially policy debate, require you to do both sides. You have to both say ‘yes’ and ‘no’ — and it forces you to find the best version of things that you disagree with, often vehemently.” ~ David Trigaux

They then disappear into the forested suburbs, nowhere land of the nowhere man. They hide in the Earths beauty. But the Earth made them rich by being extracted from, burned, drowned, and poisoned. These nice folks are the ultimate unnatural disaster.
THE PROGRESSIVE PAGE-TURNER: David Noll – Vigilante Nation (00:30:00)
Laws allowing citizens to either enforce the law themselves or look the other way when violence occurs have been around since the founding of our nation. New laws passed in red states are bringing these types of statutes back. After Roe was overturned the abortion ban in Texas included a bounty hunter clause that would allow vigilantes to enforce the law. This is the sort of alliance between private citizens and the state that allowed the reign of terror by the KKK to flourish. But blue states are not entirely without weapons in this war for the soul of our democracy. In this episode I talk with David Noll, author of Vigilante Nation.
