RADIO ART HOUR: Anna Friz, Emmanuel Madan (00:58:00)

“The Joy Channel” is Anna Friz’s and Emmanuel Madan’s foray into the radio of the future which the two worked on over the years (2007-2017) through several iterations, this being the third and final. Writes Friz, “This radio art piece was supposed to be about the future a century from now, but at some moments I feel like the present has caught up rather quickly to where we imagined we might end up or rather, the business as usual which results in a transformed New North America seems to be rather imminently taking place. But no matter, the theme is still ultimately one of optimism, as we consider the prospect of tele-empathy versus corporate emo-casting. Here’s what The Joy Channel is all about: Over a century from now, business as usual has rendered the nation states of Canada, the United States and Mexico extinct. Approximately 40 million people remain in New North America who are mainly concentrated on the west and east coasts in city-states such as Van and Turnpike, or in the walled-in corporate state strongholds of Fortress Alaska and the Protectorate of Utah. Inland, sparse but emergent communities persist. In this future, the radio ecology still includes community radio, CB and ham radio as technologies which have survived the social and environmental cataclysms by being relatively easy to salvage, fix, and modify, and therefore remain useful to improvised new societies that tend towards local systems, nomadism and scavenging. But radio in the future is not only a sonic medium: it also becomes a means of transmitting neural information in the form of standardized human emotions (corporate emo-casting), or for tele-empathic communion without devices practiced by dispersed nomadic communities. We tune across the territories of the future radio to learn of the transforming geopolitics and the emerging EM (empathy modulation) band, from the transmissions of a lone ham radio operator or wavefinder to the ongoing conversations of a group of hams radioing across the continent, to corporate shills, pundits, religious figures, the seductive sounds of emocast channels, and among them, something new being felt across the spectrum.
This speculative radio art piece explores tensions between the neurological manipulation of emotions and empathic realization, the interaction between the listeners as active or passive subjects, and the renewed struggle over access to the airwaves. The Joy Channel was originally commissioned by Radio Tesla, Berlin for RadioVisionen: 250 Jahre Radio in 2007. This release is a completely new version of the work with a new script, characters, and scenario, and was chosen as a finalist for the Phonurgia Nova Awards in the category of Sound and Radiophonic Art in 2017.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. DuBois ch. 4 (00:33:23)
A classic work of African-American literature by scholar-activist William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, the text is also one of the first sociological explorations of black culture written in America.  Published in 1903, The Souls of Black Folk is comprised of several essays about race first published in The Atlantic magazine.  Based on his own experiences DuBois develops this foundational work on being African-American in American society with creativity and style.

TUC RADIO: Alex Carey – Corporations and Propaganda, part 1 (00:29:00)

Alex Carey wrote that the people of the US have been subjected to an unparalleled, expensive, 3/4 century long propaganda effort designed to expand corporate rights by undermining democracy and destroying the unions. The 20th century, he wrote, is marked by three historic developments: the growth of democracy via the expansion of the franchise, the growth of corporations, and the growth of propaganda to protect corporations from democracy. Careys unique view of US history goes back to World War I and ends with the Reagan era. Noam Chomsky dedicated his book Manufacturing Consent to the memory of Alex Carey. Chomsky says that the Australian sociologist would have written the definitive history of propaganda in the US, had he lived to complete his work. This is a fairly complex production with many voices, historic sound clips, and source material. The program has been used by writers and students of history and propaganda. Alex Carey: Taking the Risk out of Democracy, Corporate Propaganda VS Freedom and Liberty with a foreword by Noam Chomsky was published by the University of Illinois Press in 1995.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 2/28/22 (00:55:18)

On the Show: Vladimir Putin puts Russia’s nuclear deterrent forces on higher alert, signaling the possibility of escalating to nuclear warfare. The Russian Ruble, its currency, collapses, now worth less than one US penny, a major problem which will hurt average Russians significantly, in addition to crippling Russia itself. Russia is accused of bombing kindergartens and orphanages in Ukraine, which would be war crimes. Donald Trump delivers a dangerous speech to the CPAC 2022 audience in Florida, appearing to announce his 2024 Presidential candidacy during the speech. A very sweaty and delusional Donald Trump gives a number of interviews before his CPAC 2022 speech. CPAC 2022 was completely unhinged lunacy, truly reminding us that the American right wing is very sick and extremely radical. MyPillow CEO and Founder Mike Lindell absolutely loses his mind at CPAC 2022, flipping out and screaming at reporter Robert Costa in a convention room during the conference. Republican Senator Mitt Romney crushes some of his Republican colleagues, including Marjorie Taylor Green and Paul Gosar, calling them “morons” and “low IQ.” Radical Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene speaks at a white nationalist rally, AFPAC, adjacent to CPAC, and later claims she had no idea it was white nationalist. Voicemail caller is confused, wondering why The David Pakman Show isn’t about the video game, Pac-Man.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 2/25/22 (00:58:03)

Part 1: We chat with Scott Braddock about demographic changes in Texas.
In Texas’ southern valley, there is some movement toward Republicans, but this is not the end of the story. Most new arrivals to Texas are moving into suburban areas, a Democratic stronghold. Despite Trump’s approval of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, Cruz and Cornyn support Ukraine, as do most US lawmakers. Gov. Abbott is threatening parents of transgender children with prosecution for child abuse. ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) is facing pushback, because new death toll numbers from last year’s freeze (5 days), and also from cost of electricity rise (from $1200/megawatt to $9000/megawatt). This was a governor-directed rise.
Part 2: We talk with Steffen Schmidt and Bill Curry about the situation in Ukraine, and Putin’s invasion. This action seems to indicate a failure of democracy and the rise of authoritarianism. Putin’s objective is to defeat the US, by whatever means available. There is already a divide in the US about the use of force. Cyberwarfare if working for Russia. The status seems like the situation in Europe prior to WWII. Biden inherited a bad situation, domestically and internationally. This situation is not getting better with the agitation by the Republicans. The UN is dysfunctional, and there is institutional weakness.

In this brilliant and powerful presentation from April 26, 2019, entitled The Times are Urgent, Let Us Slow Down, Bayo talks about a new kind of activism to help us address the injustice, grief and despair we face today, that he calls post activism, which he says isn’t what comes after activism, but a different way of seeing these issues and our relationship to them.
He also tells a few stories to illustrate what he’s talking about.

THE BRADCAST 2/24/22: Putin’s War (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Russian President Vladimir Putin falsely and repeatedly lied that Russia had no intention or plan to invade Ukraine. On Thursday, the unhinged Putin chose the most aggressive possible option, unleashing a brutal invasion of the sovereign nation of Ukraine. Before ordering the assault, Putin chillingly warned that any attempts to intervene from outsiders would ‘lead to consequences you have never seen in history.’ Verified sources report that hundreds have been killed and injured in the attack over the past 24 hours in Ukraine. Mass protests have erupted in at least 52 Russian cities, at great personal risk to the protesters, condemning Putin’s invasion. The world has begun to speak, largely in unison, against Putin’s hostility, instituting severe sanctions against Russian banks and oligarchs and their family members. President Biden announced he was ramping up new sanctions, charging in no uncertain terms that ‘Putin is the aggressor’ who ‘chose this war and will bear the consequences,’ vowing that ‘freedom will prevail.’ We have previously reported on various missteps made by both the U.S. and NATO over the decades, and we oppose Russian aggression just as we have opposed U.S. aggression in the past. There is NO justification whatsoever for Putin’s unprovoked war against Ukraine, and it is now an exceedingly dangerous tinderbox for the world. Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 2/26/22 (00:59:30)

Segment One:
We begin with Timothy D Lytton, Distinguished University Professor and Professor of Law at Georgia State University about the Sandy Hook School and Remington Corporation case, where Remington (or its insurers) had to pay 73 million to the parents for the shootings. Unfortunately, gun manufacturers are shielded by law from direct culpability when injury or death is caused by the guns. (Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms, 2005).
Instead, the method of marketing was attacked in the suit. This should provide guidance for other suits going forward, since in the US, dangerous products are regulated, but the enforcement of the regulations falls to the courts, by allowing individuals or groups to sue for damages due to the legal but dangerous products.
Segment Two:
We then speak with Mark Joseph Stern, writer for Slate.com, and commentator for CNBC. We discuss recent appellate court decisions, and how they change the law. Unpublished, unsigned opinions are issued, and this is hidden by the processes used. Judges, appointed by Trump, ignore precedent, and ignore the written laws. These judges are results-oriented, in that they seek to radically change the intent of many laws. One of the subverted laws is the Voting Rights Act. The Federalist Society has actively aided in these efforts.

TUC RADIO: NATOs Russia-Ukraine Crisis – Col. Lawrence Wilkerson and Prof. David Gibbs (00:29:00)

Professor of History at the University of Arizona, David Gibbs joined the effort by Rootsaction to explain Russia’s longstanding issue with NATO. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created in 1949 by the United States, Canada, and several Western European nations to – in their own words: provide collective security against the Soviet Union. Both Gibbs and Wilkerson say that the promise of not expanding NATO East towards the then Soviet Union was indeed a formal quid pro quo in return for the USSR allowing Germany to re-unite, not just a casual conversation. On February 6, 2022, the Coalition for Peace Action held a webinar with Col. Lawrence Wilkersonon peaceful alternatives in the Russia-Ukraine-NATO crisis. Wilkerson is former chief of staff to United States Secretary of State Colin Powell. Since January 2006 he has taught Government and Public Policy at the College of William & Mary. He is welcomed by Rev. Robert Moore who has served as Executive Director of the Coalition for Peace Action since 1981.

Donald Trump publishes a delusional, self-centered statement about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Right-wingers are absolutely gushing over Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, including Candace Owens and Charlie Kirk. Kyle Rittenhouse appears on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show to announce his new media accountability organization and seems visibly confused about what his organization will do. The Supreme Court says no to Donald Trump’s attempts to hide records related to the January 6 Trump riots. Joe Biden’s Attorney General Merrick Garland confirms that the Justice Department has received information about and is looking into Donald Trump’s theft of classified documents. CPAC is coming up, and one sponsor, a film called “Enemies Within the Church,” is absolutely beyond parody. Voicemail caller asks whether electric vehicles are really better for the environment given that most electricity is still generated by fossil fuels.

THE POSITIVE MIND: Hygge: The Danish Art of Feeling Good (00:58:00)

Hosts talk about the Danish word “Hygge,” which is a way of creating comfort and ease in your life. It is amazing how many ways we can create more comfort and ease in our daily rituals, from how we wake up in the morning, to how we live our day, to how we go to sleep. In the winter season, there are so many ways to add pleasure to our lives, like wearing cozy wool socks, to making a cup of hot apple cider or hot chocolate. For the Danish, Hygge is a way of life, which explains why they are one of the happiest countries in the world.

OUR EARNEST STRUGGLE: Rochester’s Frederick Douglass Monument and the Battle Over Public Memory (00:30:00)

Rochester, New York is home to the first ever civic monument to honor an African American: the 1899 statue of Frederick Douglass. The famed abolitionist called Rochester home for 25 years. But beneath the surface of the often told story of Douglass’s time in Rochester lie hidden histories… of the hotel waiter who made the monument a reality, of the racism Douglass’s family endured in Rochester…The past is a battleground, and what we choose to remember (or forget) shapes our future.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 2/22/22 (00:54:17)

On the Show: Vladimir Putin’s Russia invades Ukraine shortly after recognizing the “independence” of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions on the basis of pro-Russian separatists being there. Fox News quickly attempts to blame Joe Biden for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, an effort that is foiled by some of Fox News’ own reporters. Former Democratic Presidential Candidate and former Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard goes so overboard on Fox News with her pro-Russian propaganda that even Sean Hannity has to slow her down. Fox News propagandist Tucker Carlson sides with Vladimir Putin literally as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is starting. Fox News host Neil Cavuto calls out his own audience for their anti-vaccine sentiment after returning from the COVID ICU hospitalization to host his show. Donald Trump faces a “five year felony” according to Glenn Kirschner over his theft of classified documents. Former Democratic Presidential Candidate and former Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard will speak at the radical right-wing Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) this weekend. Radical Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene insists that she is not crazy. The Eggman calls in to ask about the updated pronunciation of Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital city.

Education is the key to understanding. No wonder the planet is in such a mess ” as we do a pretty terrible job in teaching about sustainability, in our classrooms as well as within society in general. So what are the issues, how do we address them, and what would the world look like if we made making the planet better as high a priority as we do making more money? Join Annie and Jay Warmke from Blue Rock Station for an uniformed rant about the state of education and how we get the message out regarding the greatest challenges facing our global society.

CHARLE CHAPLIN: The Great Dictator speech (00:04:24)

One of the most important speeches in recorded history was given by Charlie Chaplin aka, the Silent Comedian. Please share this video and pass the message on. The Great Dictator [Oct 1940] Written, Produced, & Directed by Charlie Chaplin Use Captions for Translations. I found this comment as encouraging as the speech itself; its 100% spot on: “It’s quite amazing to hear this speech in 2012, and find no differentiations between the context of his speech and the real world. This movie is over 70 years old and not a shred of misinformation is given. Truly brilliant. They say that brilliant ideas and revelations are universal and forever, and this is? definitely one of them.” -DaveDooval

RADIO ART HOUR: Mind’s Eye Theater with Sun Ra, Sheila Davies Sumner (00:58:00)

Tune in a radio play from the 1960s with music from Sun Ra, and a radio work from Sheila Davies Sumner. First, “The Stranger,” a radio play with musical accompaniment by Sun Ra & His Arkestra, premiered over the Pacifica radio network in the late 1960s, on a program called “Mind’s Eye Theater.” The exact date is unknown, but 1968 is a consensus guess (as noted in The Earthly Recordings of Sun Ra). Ras incidental music, which is tight and atmospheric, surfaces sporadically beneath the dialog, but at no time is featured. Then, in “In What is the Matter in Amy Glennon?,” Sheila Davies Sumner showcases her interest in the connection between the physical and metaphysical, storytelling, science, and psychology, as well as her agility with words and quick wit. The piece simultaneously tells and constructs the story of Amy Glennon, whose body and mind have been separated by The Great Fathers of Science, as she reckons with her consciousness, relationship to the quantum, and the bitterness of self-knowledge, and transmutes it into a marriage of philosophy and science, and wisdom in the form of paper cups of hot coffee. The story is told alternatingly by a narrator and by Amy herself, accompanied by a chorus, and is worked and re-worked within itself in an auction-house whose auctioneer takes bids on the content, direction, and meaning of the text. Deeply philosophical, the piece is filled with rapid-fire confetti blasts of references to mythology, science, metaphysics, philosophers, theorists, artists, and subconscious symbolism, playfully hurrying the listener on in a delightful almost giddy pace towards the center of human and universal thought and experience. In its many transmutations, twists, and turns, the piece encourages the listener to reflect on storytelling, identity, the relationship between science and philosophy, and the very nature of being in both the physical and metaphysical senses. Some listeners may feel compelled to listen again and again to follow the various paths, references and trains of thoughts. The script of the piece can be read on the New American Radio archive. – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2020/2021, Jess Speer.

It is generally held to be the most famous of a number of narratives written by former slaves during the same period. DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 2/21/22 (00:54:59)

On the Show: Kamala Harris, Boris Johnson, and other world leaders worry that there is a “real possibility” of the “biggest European war since World War II” between Russia and Ukraine. Joe Biden agrees in principle to meet with Vladimir Putin, assuming Putin has not invaded Ukraine, but Russia denies a meeting has been set. It’s time to stop explaining ourselves to the bad faith minority in the audience. Actual peer-reviewed randomized control trial about Ivermectin confirms it is not useful for treating COVID-19. A judge rules that Donald Trump and his children will have to answer questions under oath. Donald Trump panics and sends out another febrile screed after a judge decides he will have to answer questions under oath. It is confirmed that Donald Trump took classified documents to Mar-a-Lago, they were recovered by the National Archives, and the case has been turned over to the Justice Department for investigation. Radical Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene wildly claims that Hillary Clinton spied on the Trump campaign, the Trump White House, and the Trump Oval Office. Voicemail caller asks David why he “won’t” debate Ben Shapiro, Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, Candace Owens, Dave Rubin, and others.

YOUR UNDIVIDED ATTENTION: The Power of Solutions Journalism (00:40:23)

What is the goal of our digital information environment? Is it simply to inform us, or also to empower us to act?

At the Solutions Journalism Network, the team understands that simply reporting on social problems rarely leads to change. What they’ve discovered is that rigorously reporting on responses to social problems — can more often give activists and concerned citizens the hope and information they need to take effective action. For this reason, SJN trains and encourage journalists to report on “solutions angles,” and more broadly seeks to rebalance the news, so that every day people are exposed to stories that help them understand problems and challenges, and stories that show potential ways to respond. In this episode, Tina Rosenberg, co-founder of SJN, and Hélène Biandudi Hofer, former manager of SJN’s Complicating the Narratives initiative, walk us through the origin of solutions journalism, how to practice it, and what impact it has had. Tristan Harris and Aza Raskin reflect on how, much like solutions journalism, humane technology should also be designed to create an empowering relationship with reality — enabling us to shift us from learned helplessness to what we might call learned hopefulness.

THE BRADCAST 2/17/22 (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Nobody is worth $200 million just to talk on air, no matter who they are. New reporting reveals that Spotify, a company that doesn’t pay its musical artists nearly enough, offered podcaster Joe Rogan that hefty sum – – underscoring that if they have that much extra money lying around to blow on one guy to help spread deadly misinformation, they are definitely not paying nearly enough in taxes. Trump, his family, and his business are losing motion after motion, in case after case, in courts across the country – – losing bigly in New York, where a judge has ordered them to answer questions under oath in a civil probe conducted by state Attorney General Letitia James into allegations of tax, bank and insurance fraud. The Biden White House rejected Trump’s attempt to invoke Executive Privilege to block the release of White House visitor logs from January 6th, 2021. A federal judge in Washington, D.C. has restored the Trump Organization back into a lawsuit brought by the D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine in an investigation into millions of dollars that Trump, his family and the Trump Organization appear to have unlawfully siphoned off from the non-profit Presidential Inauguration Committee back in 2017. In Colorado, the very Trumpy, disgraced former Mesa County Clerk, Tina Peters, who was barred from her position overseeing elections for stealing voting system software and is under multiple criminal investigations by local, state and federal prosecutors, has announced she is now running for Colorado Secretary of State. KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: The Supply Chain Debacle Explained (00:58:45)

The break in the supply chain feels sudden but it’s been building for some 50 years. And our guest American Prospect Executive Editor David Dayen explains in a special edition of the magazine: None of the private players involved have any incentive to fix it. And he points out that No engineer would construct a supply chain with this many vulnerabilities, with this little resiliency. It’s about concentration of power to the top who have made more money in 2021 than in the prior ten years. Of course there is price gouging. We need a return to stakeholder capitalism: workers, communities, the environment. Biden is taking the instant blame, of course, but in fact he is taking steps to rebuild an industrial base. And government has to step in for there to be any hope. There is evidence that it is starting to be addressed.

Segment Two:
We then catch up with Suzanne Gordon, senior policy analyst at the Veterans Healthcare Policy Institute discusses the appointment of Daniel Gade, a critic of the Veterans Administration, to be in charge of the VA in Virginia. This is not good news, because he discounts the outstanding record of this organization, and how it helps veterans who suffer from many kinds of injuries, including emotional injuries. Many veterans will suffer because of this appointment, made by Governor Youngkin.

Kate Raworth, based in Oxford, England, is the author of the book Doughnut Economics that has been translated into over 20 languages. She is Senior Associate at Oxford Universitys Environmental Change Institute. Kate Raworth puts out the challenge that we need to eliminate human deprivation and ecological degradation at the same time. Something that has never been done before. SEA CHANGE RADIO: Rod Graham: The Fight Over Affirmative Action (00:29:00)

Back in 2016 the US Supreme Court established that the University of Texas could continue to consider race as a factor in admissions, in order to ensure a diverse student body. At that time Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg declared, I dont expect that were going to see another affirmative action case, at least in education. But Justice Ginsburg hadnt anticipated the current Court and its appetite for re-examining established law. Later this year the Court will hear challenges to affirmative action at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina. Given the right-leaning makeup of this Court, the decision may well deliver a major blow to affirmative action at this countrys institutions of higher learning. This week on Sea Change Radio, we discuss the state of affirmative action with Prof. Rod Graham, a sociologist at Old Dominion University. We look at the recent history of racial preference in educational policies, talk about why it would be a mistake to abandon affirmative action, and ponder the impact that such a decision could have on legacy preference in school admissions.

Eric Trump is interviewed by Candace Owens and delivers a manic and delusional interview, completely disconnected from reality. Donald Trump appears on Glenn Beck’s program and floats the idea of the death penalty for people who have not even been charged with a crime. A Fox News panel explodes when Geraldo Rivera suggests that right wing media including Fox News are responsible for inciting the Canadian trucker convoy and protests. MyPillow CEO and Founder Mike Lindell is denied entry to Canada, where he wanted to go to support the trucker convoy, due to being unvaccinated. The Eggman calls in to say that Jamie Raskin doesn’t have enough skeletons in his closet to be seriously considered as a Presidential candidate.

Hosts welcome Dr. Brenda Shoshanna, Ph.D. back to discuss her book, Zen and the Art of Falling in Love.
Following up on last week’s show, Dr. Shoshanna talks about how everyone says they want to be in love but are addicted to the habit of staying separate. Brenda talks about the practice of “Zazen,” which is simply sitting still, noticing your breath, watching and not reacting to your passing thoughts. Similarly, in love, Brenda teaches us not to react to our passing feelings and emotions of the moment, but to simply commit your spirit to a flowing forward in love.

EDUCATION RADIO: Exposing the Mythology of Education Reform (00:49:46)

In this week’s program we take some time to explore the dominant narrative shaping so-called liberal education reform – how did this narrative evolve, what kinds of messages are being communicated, how does the on-the-ground experience of many teachers and students expose contradictions, and what does it look like to uncover a counter narrative? We hear from media scholar Sut Jhally, as well as teachers Julie Cavanagh, Alev Dervish & Brian Jones and parent & community member Lisa Donlan: four of the filmmakers of the Inconvenient Truth Behind Waiting for Superman, a critical response to the heavily publicized and corporate backed 2010 film Waiting for Superman, a movie that further propagandizes ongoing education reform efforts that are influencing public perceptions and education policy in the U.S. The Inconvenient Truth Behind Waiting for Superman is just one example of grassroots efforts to deconstruct the myths that are upheld in the dominant discourse in the U.S. around public education.

DAVID PAKMA

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 2/15/22 (00:56:29)

On the Show: Russia reports that it is pulling some troops back from the Ukrainian border while Ukraine remains skeptical. Donald Trump’s former “fraud” lawyer Sidney Powell admits that maybe none of her claims are true. Republicans have been meeting in private to question Donald Trump’s power over their party. A judge has thrown out Sarah Palin’s defamation lawsuit against the New York Times, but this doesn’t stop Fox News from calling it a victory for Palin. As expected, Donald Trump is backing “big lie” candidates in important election-related positions for 2022. Donald Trump’s accounting firm, Mazars USA, bails on Trump and says the last decade of financial documents cannot be trusted. MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell is back on Steve Bannon’s show, once again claiming that many states are about to “decertify” their 2020 election results, which is not true. Radical Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert is awarded a misspelled award for “Hottest Woman in Congress,” along with a gift card to Red Lobster. Voicemail caller asks a confused but sort of okay question about nutrition, big pharma, and medicine.

RADIO ART HOUR : Scanner, Black Siren Radio, Andrea Sodomka(00:58:00)

New works this week from Scanner, Black Siren Radio, Andrea Sodomka. British radio artist Scanner is first, with “The Earthbound Fox” from his 2022 album collaboration with Olga Wojciechowska, here going by Stri. Next we tune in “Mourning Good” from Black Siren Radio, and introduced by Andy Stuhl. Mourning Good is the work of Black Siren Radio, which is one outlet for the We Be Imagining initiative. We Be Imagining combines academic research and the performance arts to propel critical conversations around race, gender, class, and disability. Mourning Good exemplifies this approach by collaging music and archival audio including academic work. A keystone source for the remix is a 2017 talk by sociologist Ruha Benjamin, but we also hear Pauline Rogers, Joshua Bennett, Mamie Till, Kendrick Lamar, Geto Boys, 2Pac, and others. The producers of Black Siren Radio, which airs on Columbia University station WKCR-FM, intend for the piece to advance an artistic practice of remixing and re-amplifying Black scholarship. – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2021/2022, Andy Stuhl. Finally, we tune in “Intimate Space” by Andrea Sodomka, and introduced by Jess Speer. “Intimate Space” was originally conceived as an installation for the festival Ars Sonora, Radio Clsica, put on by Radio Nacional de Espana. As is her usual practice, Sodomka spent many months thinking about, researching, and conducting interviews about the concept of intimacy and intimate space before beginning composition or production. During this time, she spent time in Tokyo, which gave her insight into cultural and contextual differences in the idea of physical intimacy and personal space. When the time came for production, Sodomka and her collaborators, including Helmut Jasbar on electric guitar, Heidelinde Gratzl on accordion, and Sodomka herself using electronic instruments, gathered in the studio, and were able to take time to improvise and play together to get a good recording that captured their expression of intimate space. Afterwards, Sodomka worked with sound engineer Anton Reininger to mix a recording in Dolby 5.1 Digital Surround Sound that included a recorded interview with collaborator August Black edited by Anna Kuncio, and a sound donation by Daniel Lercher.
Sodomkas original plan for the installation included using mini-FM transmitters broadcasting from cars outside the festival venue and the audience walking around the cars with receivers, but technical problems led to a smaller installation of transmitters located in a room. The piece was first broadcast on ORF Kunstradio as a radio art piece on September 20, 2009, and was installed and performed on September 23, 2009, at CDMC (Festival for Contemporary Music), in Alicante, Spain. In the installation, audience members walking around the room created a new version of the work, their movements and the pieces of the broadcast being transmitted from various transmitters shifting the sounds throughout the installation. The piece was broadcast again on October 24, 2009 by Ars Sonora, Radio Clsica. In both its installation and broadcast formats, the piece references and uses radio as a way to think about intimacy and intimate space as something that is broadcast, so to speak, from individuals and extending out at various distances depending on the cultural background and personality of individual transmitters. Compositionally, the piece was also inspired by the sounds Sodomka could hear from her composers hut in her garden: birdsong, neighborhood children, and other sounds of the people and natural world around her becoming a part of her intimate space and compositional work. Distance, communication, and intimacy are all factors in this intimate space. Similarly, mini-FM transmitters can allow people to transmit a broadcast within the distance of their own personal bubble, only allowing those physically close, and therefore within the intimate space, to receive those messages, and taking that personal bubble of intimate space with them wherever they go. Radio creates a mapping between time and space, Sodomka says, transforming an acoustical geometry into a spatial geometry. – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2020/2021, Jess Speer.

Playwright Carolyn Gage performing one of her Sermons for a Lesbian Tent Revival. This one is relevant for everyone. First she discusses the poverty of our words to distinguish among many forms of “love” and lists alternative words that are more precise. DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 2/14/22 (00:55:25)

On the Show: As tensions continue to escalate on the Russia-Ukraine border, former Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbards delivers what is possibly her silliest foreign policy take. Canadian truckers are reportedly coming to the United States to block traffic and protests non-existent vaccine mandates. Radical Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene now claims that her husband’s vote was “stolen” in the 2020 Presidential election. Donald Trump adviser Peter Navarro is confronted by MSNBC’s Ari Melber about his belief that former Vice President Mike Pence could have effectively overturned the results of the 2020 Presidential election. It is revealed that some of the documents Donald Trump illegally took to his residence at Mar-a-Lago were classified, some marked “top secret.” Donald Trump delivers a number of unhinged weekends interviews including one during which he says that his presidency was “romantic” and “glamorous.” Anti-vaccine leaders Pasquale Bacco repents, admitting that his movement has deaths on its conscience. Former President Donald Trump suggests that some former Hillary Clinton operatives should be put to death. Voicemail caller asks whether right-wingers genuinely do not understand where and when the concept of “free speech” applies, or are just pretending in bad faith.

THE BRADCAST 2/11/22: EarthJustice on USPS scheme to avoid electrifying delivery fleet (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The U.S. Postal Service, under the corrupt direction of Donald Trump’s Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, is about to spend $11 billion on 165,000 new delivery trucks. Only 10 percent will be electric vehicles, and 90 percent will be gas-guzzlers that will contribute to air pollution and our worsening climate crisis for decades. The newly-designed gas-powered trucks also just happen to be one pound too heavy to fall under EPA fuel efficiency standards. ADRIAN MARTINEZ, Senior Attorney for Earth Justice, details the absurdly flawed environmental economic and environmental analysis that the Postal Service used to justify its rejection of all-electric vehicles for its new delivery trucks, the Postal Service PR team’s greenwashing, the ‘brazen’ responses from the USPS under DeJoy’s command, and potential litigation to prevent the plan from going into effect. Martinez also explains why the hell DeJoy is still in his job at all, and actions that the public can take to help join efforts across the country to pressure the USPS Board of Governors to halt the gas-guzzler plan. Also today: A new, partially redacted letter from Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Martin Heinrich (D-NM) suggests the existence of a very troubling CIA ‘secret bulk collection’ program sweeping up Americans’ data, that has been ‘kept from the public and from Congress’ and is operating outside of judicial, congressional or even executive branch oversight. Plus: An encouraging development in space exploration.

REVEREND BILLY RADIO: The United States of the Sixth Extinction (00:29:00)

What would it take to be honest about the hypo-evolution that is sweeping through the biosphere, and biting us in the ass? That intense honesty will require whole communities to be truth-tellers. Reverend Billy is the self appointed pastor of The Church of Stop Shopping, a radical performance community and action group based in New York City. Although his church has tens of thousands of members, Billy is a preacher with an unknown god. He is not Christian, but wears a priest’s collar and televangelist’s hair. His followers shout “Earthalujah!” and “Change-a-lujah!” on the sidewalks. He started the show while locked down in NY, with death raining down on the skyscrapers. He likes to stop preaching suddenly and play music. In his show, The Fiery Eagles of Justice, a jazz trio that is hard to fathom, and The Stop Shopping Choir, a 35 voice chorus of trespassing activists – help The Rev slide into his next sermon. The show features a 10 minute natural news segment and reports from the activist world by Church director Savitri D.

ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 2/11/22 (00:59:05)

Part 1: We talk with Scott Braddock, Editor of the Quorum Report, about Texas. He is in Brownsville, in south Texas, close to the border. We discuss the situation with the National Guard, who are there at the behest of Gov. Abbott, for no reason. Morale is bad, they have no resources, and they havent been paid for this political war.
We talk about what Democrats should be doing to garner more of the vote in the Valley. Many residents are of Hispanic descent, but different in their outlook from Hispanics in the large cities. They tend to be more socially conservative. We discuss some of the dirty tricks that Republicans are using to eliminate Democrats and centrist Republicans.
Part 2: We talk with Lincoln Mitchell and Bill Curry about several topics.
Eileen Gu, the skier who was born and raised in the US, but chose to represent China in the Olympics, has had a lot of attention. There are many factors for her choice, including financial.
We also talk about the Supreme Court, which has been busy rolling back many previously decided cases. Kavanaugh has published his defense of the shadow docket recently, and this is also disturbing. How much reverence does the Supreme Court deserve?

SOJOURNER TRUTH: Black History, Harry Belafonte & SNCC (00:55:28)

In honor of Black History month, today, we present our next chapter in our series on the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee known as SNCC, focusing on musician, actor, and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte.
We will hear a speech at the SNCC 50th anniversary conference by Harry Belafonte. A child of Jamaican immigrants, Belafonte depicted the struggles of Black people in the United States, the Caribbean, and Africa through his Calypso music. Inspired by activists Paul Robeson and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Belafonte played an instrumental role in funding the southern Civil Rights Movement, including the 1961 Freedom Rides and SNCC during the Mississippi Freedom Summer of 1964. He also helped to organize the 1963 March on Washington, participated in SNCCs day-to-day work on the ground in Mississippi.

LAW AND DISORDER 2/14/22 (00:57:59)

The January 6th event last year was a peculiar kind of coup, not one that would install an authoritarian figure, but one that was designed to keep him in his job. It almost worked, but not quite. Trump had support but not enough in the right places. There wasn’t enough support for him in the military, the national security establishment, nor in the corporate elite, nor in the media. That doesn’t mean that we are out of danger.
We are seeing the success of a creeping homegrown Christianized form of fascism in our country. A particular American form. 150 million people live in red states. The far right has seized local politics. The majority of legislatures and the governorships in 22 states as compared to 15 by the Democrats. Thirteen are divided.
Nineteen states have passed voter suppression and voter nullification laws as documented by the Brennan Center at NYU School of Law. In the face of this the Democratic Party has been supine. They will not mobilize the American people. The late political philosopher Sheldon Wolin has called the Democratic Party the Inauthentic Opposition. The Democrats function as a junior partner of the Republicans.
As Noam Chomsky has stated, the January 6 events show that the limited political democracy that still exists is hanging by a delicate thread. The Republicans have rejected democratic, with a small D, politics. What are the reasons for The growth of Christian fascism? What might be in store for us? What is to be done?
Guest – Roger D. Harris is closely affiliated with the Task Force on the Americas and The US Peace Council. He is a leader of the California Peace and Freedom Party, the only socialist party in the state to hold ballot status.
—-
Encroaching Fascism in The United States
An American form of fascism is unfolding in our country. What exactly is it and what can we do to fight it?
We see a massive political effort to legitimatize and normalize white minority rule. Things are happening rapidly. A year ago, our capital was attacked pursuant to a plan to reverse the results of the election. Soon the Supreme Court will likely overrule the almost 50 year precedent set by Roe v Wade on the question of women’s rights to control their own bodies. Voting rights have been and will continue to be extremely restricted particularly in communities of color. Irrational and magical thinking has been legitimatized. More than 900 thousand people have unnecessarily died of Covid. There has developed in our country a culture of cruelty manifested by Trump, but initiated in CIA torture and detention camps for Muslim men and boys in Abu Ghraib and Guantnamo.
It didn’t start after 9/11 with the wars against Afghanistan and Iraq. It goes back further than that. America has been prosecuting wars abroad during our entire lifetimes. The provocations against Russia regarding NATO military encroachment on its borders are the latest chapter in almost continual and seemingly endless wars. A lesson of history since Greek and Roman times is that you can’t have imperialism abroad and democracy at home.
Guest – Professor Henry A. Giroux currently holds the McMaster University chair for a Scholarship in the Public Interest in the English and Cultural Studies Department. He has written many books, most recently The Public in Peril: Trump and the Menace of American Authoritarianism and American Nightmare: Facing the Challenge of Fascism.

THE BRADCAST 2/10/22: Lock. Him. Up. (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Remember those thundering, Third Reich-style 2016 Trump campaign rally chants of ‘LOCK HER UP!’ when Trump falsely claimed that Hillary Clinton mishandled classified information in her emails? The FBI’s very public investigations concluded Clinton never violated any law. Today, new reporting reveals that among the many boxes of documents that disgraced former President Trump stole from the White House, the National Archives found items reportedly labeled as ‘classified’ and ‘top secret’. Trump also reportedly attempted to flush unknown numbers of documents down the toilets of the White House. He also frequently destroyed presidential records by ripping them to shreds, despite being told by the White House Counsel and multiple Chiefs of Staff that it was illegal to do so. Trump’s theft and destruction of the documents is in clear violation of the Presidential Records Act. Yet the corporate media’s coverage is again downplaying this latest collection of criminal felonies committed by the former president – – another stark example of how Republicans and Democrats are treated differently by the corporate media and by law enforcement. Even more appalling is the difference in the way the Dept. of Justice appears to treat Republicans versus Democrats, especially high profile law-breaking Republicans like Trump. Also today: The Florida Republican Party appears to be using operatives to target low-income senior citizens to unlawfully change their party affiliation without the voters’ permission. Super-genius Georgia GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green complains that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is unleashing her ‘gazpacho police’ on Republican members of Congress. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: Courageous Movement for Change That Works (00:59:39)

Breaking the mold of powerlessness happens, in the US Senate and in our neighborhoods. On the first segment Political Science professor and author Ron Feinman points to six little known US Senators who courageously stood up against war and injustice. And on the second part, Oregons Jan Spencer highlights changes at the local level. Facing down the pervasive isolation of unfettered capitalism, a permaculture is sprouting as a universal language, breaking barriers. Bringing diverse people together.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 2/12/22 (00:59:30)

Segment One: We open with Dave Levinthal, of Business Insider. We about the problem of stock trading by members of Congress. The STOCK Act requires that members of Congress report such trades, although many members are slow to do this. Is it time to write the STOCK 2.0 Act, and enforce it? Members of Congress have access to insider information, pending legislation that will affect stock prices, etc. In addition to the reporting by members themselves, who else (spouses, children, aides, etc.) should be included?
Segment Two: We then talk with Amir Khafagy, who researched the importance and context of containerization for shipments being transported to the US and other countries for The American Prospect. Our talk centers on container ships, and their supporting technologies, which are bad for domestic producers (they cannot compete with cheaper offshore producers), workers (cheaper offshore labor), the environment (big ships pollute more). It is dangerous to global markets: one mishap disrupts the supply chain. There are only three major groups that control 80% of the ships, and only a few ports where these ships may dock.

TUC RADIO: Doughnut Economics VS the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (00:29:00)

In early February of 2022 a news caster warned that the US may be about to lose its status as a world superpower to China, based on the GDP. The Gross Domestic Product is the total market value of the goods and services produced by a country’s economy. For the year 2021 the GDP of the US has been growing by only 5.7% – while that of China has grown 8.1%. The GDP system counts only cash transactions in the market and recognizes no value other than money. This means there is no value to peace and to the preservation of the environment. Hawaii was taken over in 1898 by American sugar planters and missionaries, with the support of the US marines. For the last 16 years the Hawai’i Book & Music Festival recovers and celebrates the cultures of the islands. They bring together Hawaiian poets, storytellers and musicians, with community thought leaders and experts in Hawaiian sustainability and resilience. In cooperation with the University of Hawaii at Mnoa, they are also inviting international speakers. In 2021 it was the climate scientist Michael Mann, from Pennsylvania State University. And the English economist Kate Raworth, who studied economics at Oxford. Disillusioned by modern economics, she dedicated her life to changing the way economic success is measured and public policy determined. Kate Raworth puts the needs of people first – be it food, water, housing, health, equity, and a political voice and wants them met without overshooting the Earth’s ecological ceiling. This and more is laid out in her graphic presentation of three concentric circles which she tongue-in-cheek calls Doughnut Economics. Kate Raworth is being introduced at the 16th annual Hawai’i Book & Music Festival on October 7, 2021, by Kamana-maikalani Beamer, a full professor at the University of Hawaii-Mnoa. DATE: 2021/10/07

COUNTERSPIN: The Arizona Audit, Cryptocurrency (00:28:00)

This week on CounterSpin: A New York Times opinion piece by editorial board member Jesse Wegman says that debunking Republicans’ baseless, self-serving claims of voter fraud “was always a fool’s game,” because “the professional vote-fraud crusaders are not in the fact business.” The suggestion seems to be that even addressing such claims is “giving them oxygen.” But there’s a difference between airing such claims and training a scrutinizing, disinfectant light on them—and it’s really journalists’ choice which of those they do.

RADIO ART HOUR: Drive-In Concert (00:57:00)

“Drive-In Concert,” introduced by Andy Stuhl, is featured today. In March of 2020, Los Angeles was experiencing its first major surge of the COVID-19 pandemic. In place of a planned residency together that had to be cancelled due to the virus, a group of local electronic musicians devised the Drive-In Concert as a way they could perform together for a safely isolated audience. Their approach entailed setting up their gear in a van in an after-hours supermarket parking lot, arranging to transmit the sound from the van over a hyper-local FM signal, and inviting attendees to park in the lot and tune in from their cars. The performers included Celia Hollander, Jeremiah Chiu, Ben Babbitt, Booker Stardrum, and Marta Sofia Honer. Los Angeles station Dublab helped with the radio transmission, and around 100 cars attended. The recording is a reminder of the intense feelings of disruption and anxiety that attended the early stages of the pandemic and the unique ways that radio provided creative continuity when other modes for sharing sonic space had to pause. – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2021/2022, Andy Stuhl. Celia Hollander is a Los Angeles based artist and composer working with audio, scores, performance, installation and text. Her work critically engages ways that audio and the act of listening can shape temporal perception, generate narratives, question cultural infrastructures and cultivate social connection. www.celiahollander.com/info

Jeremiah Chiu is a musician, graphic designer, and artist who operates the hybrid-creative studio, Some All None. Jeremiah has played in Icy Demons, Chandeliers, Axis:Sova, Nedelle Torrisi, (SAME), and currently plays in LA Takedown as well has his own musical projects Cosmic Son, Pair, and under his own name. Jeremiah’s work has been presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Getty Center, Human Resources LA, Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center, CalArts, and High Desert Test Sites. www.jeremiahchiu.com
Ben Babbitt is a composer and producer based in Los Angeles. Since 2013, he has provided the music and sound design for the episodic videogame Kentucky Route Zero, and recently completed the score to Amanda Kramers debut feature film Paris Window. In addition to scoring, he has performed and toured internationally as a collaborator with projects including Weyes Blood and How to Dress Well. www.benbabbitt.bandcamp.com

Booker Stardrum is a composer, percussionist, producer, and educator. His compositions are sculptural, carved from the dense layering of instruments and manipulated samples, a pantonal harmonic sense, and an intuitive approach to rhythm. Stardrum has released three solo records (‘Crater in 2021,”Temporary etc.’ in 2018 and ‘Dance And’ in 2015). Throughout the last decade, Stardrum has performed, toured, and recorded with Lee Ranaldo, Weyes Blood, Cloud Becomes Your Hand, Landlady, and the Young Jean Lee Theater Company, in addition to countless experimental and improvisational collaborations. www.bookerstardrum.com/bio-press

Marta Honer is an active musician that has performed across the United States, Canada, Spain, Portugal and Finland. MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR: Thus Spoke The Plant with Monica Gagliano (00:59:00)

Monica Gagliano is research associate professor of evolutionary ecology and former fellow of the Australian Research Council (2012″2015). She is currently a research affiliate at the Environment Institute at the University of Sydney and holds an adjunct position as senior research fellow at the Centre for Evolutionary Biology at the University of Western Australia. She is the author of numerous scientific articles in the fields of animal and plant behavioral and evolutionary ecology and is the coeditor of The Green Thread: Dialogues with the Vegetal World and The Language of Plants: Science, Philosophy and Literature, and Memory and Learning in Plants. As an innovative scientist, her work has extended the concept of cognition, including perception, learning processes, memory, and consciousness in plants. By demonstrating experimentally that learning, memory, and decision-making are not the exclusive province of animals, she has reignited the discourse on plant subjectivity and ethical and legal standing. Inspired by encounters with nature and with indigenous elders from around the world, Monica Gagliano is not only transforming our perception of plants but also of our own very nature. Her science is based on a progressive and holistic approach to science, one that is comfortable engaging at the interface between areas as diverse as ecology, physics, law, anthropology, philosophy, literature, music and the arts, and spirituality. By rekindling a sense of wonder for this beautiful place we call home, she is helping to create a fresh imaginative ecology of mind that can inspire the emergence of truly innovative solutions to human relations with the world we co-inhabit.
And she is the author of an utterly fascinating book Thus Spoke the Plant ” A Remarkable Journey of Groundbreaking Scientific Discoveries & Personal Encounters with Plants.

THE BRADCAST 2/3/22: Our never-ending stories: ‘War on Terror’; COVID; Gerrymandering; Climate Crisis (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The Never-Ending ‘Global War on Terror’ continues, with new details on a US military operation in Syria that President Biden said led to the deaths of the latest leader of ISIS and more than a dozen others, including children. In the Never-Ending Coronavirus pandemic, infections rates of the Omicron variant are now falling in most states, but deaths are still rising, averaging about 2,600 per day, with hospitals still overwhelmed. The unvaccinated are now 60 times more likely to die from COVID than the fully vaccinated. In the Never-Ending Assault on Democracy, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court will step in to ensure new, fair redistricting maps for voters instead of maps drawn by its heavily-gerrymandered GOP-controlled state legislature. There’s the Never-Ending Madness of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy: the EPA is working to put the brakes on an insane boondoggle of plan by the corrupt DeJoy to purchase 165,000 polluting, gas-guzzling delivery trucks instead of moving to an all-electric fleet. EPA found USPS’s required environmental analysis to be wildly flawed, underscored by new reporting exposing DeJoy’s misleading claims about the $11 billion contract. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report’ with more news on our Never-Ending Climate Crisis, but some good environmental news, as well…

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: Shortlisted for Supreme Court: Like Police Interrogation (00:59:24)

One might think it was purely an honor, but it can be brutal. Especially for women. Sexism may generally be more subtle now, but not always. In this discussion of her new book, Shortlisted: Women in the Shadows of the Supreme Court, co-author Hannah Brenner Johnson reveals virtually unknown history of women nominees. Including what Nixon really said about his pretend nominee. Herbert Hoovers choice was destroyed by a whisper campaign about her sexual orientation. It goes on. RBG changed the discussion and Bidens nominee will certainly move the needle of continuing racism and sexism.

The Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 2/5/22 (00:59:30)

Segment One: First off John Nichols joins us as he discusses his book that deals with how badly the pandemic was handled, and how many lives it has cost. We need accountability, in order to change policy. People like Kushner, Pence, Trump, and others have profited from the misery and death caused by their incompetence and greed.
Segment Two: We then talk with Mel Goodman, former CIA analyst, about the situation of Ukraine and Russia. Is the US being hypocritical when we are disturbed about Russia’s demands that the west not encourage Ukraine to join NATO.

The British Library held a celebration of ideas in the book by David Graeber and David Wengrow. SEA CHANGE RADIO: Global Investigative Journalism Network + Pandemic Plastic Use (00:29:00)

An icon of 20th Century journalism, Walter Cronkite, once said, “The profession of journalism ought to be about telling people what they need to know – not what they want to know.” That quote was never more relevant than today. This week on Sea Change Radio we speak with two reporters. First, we talk about the state of independent journalism with David Kaplan, the Executive Director of the Global Investigative Journalism Network, an organization promoting cutting-edge investigative reporting. Then we hear from Tara Duggan of the San Francisco Chronicle about some reporting she has done on single-use plastic products — how their use surged during the pandemic and whether retailers are finally reverting back to pre-pandemic practices.

TED TALK: My descent into America’s neo-Nazi movement & how I got out – Christian Picciolini (00:20:30)

At 14-years-old, Christian Picciolini went from naive teenager to white supremacist, and soon, the leader of America’s first neo-Nazi skinhead gang. How was he radicalized, and how did he ultimately get out? In this courageous talk, Christian shares a surprising and counterintuitive solution to hate in all forms. After leaving the white-supremacist skinhead movement that he helped build in the 1980s and 90s, Christian Picciolini co-founded Life After Hate, a nonprofit dedicated to helping people disengage from violent extremism. His memoir, White American Youth: My Descent into America’s Most Violent Hate Movement—and How I Got Out (Hachette), which details his involvement, and eventual disengagement, from the early American white nationalist movement, will be published on December 26, 2017. Christian lives in Chicago. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Iron Heel by Jack London Chapter 24-25 (00:16:17)

Published in 1908, this is a novel about a socialist revolution that was crushed for centuries by an oligarchy of wealth before ultimately reviving and building a more just and compassionate world. Portrayed as an illicit revolutionary journal written by Avis Everhard, London chooses a woman to narrate the great need for social justice, the progress of the revolution, its rationale and her sometimes starry-eyed love for the main character Ernest Everhard. Written after London was jailed for participating in a jobs march, this short and action-packed novel is London’s most detailed outline of his socialist views and the logic of a socialist revolution. Part political novel, part dystopian fiction, part speculative fiction, The Iron Heel also includes historically factual footnotes making it a unique textual hybrid.

Notable discussions from the David Pakman Show subreddit. including about our Trump rally correspondents and the recent backlash against Carhartt from anti-vaccine right wingers. Democratic Congressman Pete Aguilar, a member of the House Committee investigating the January 6 Trump riots, says that Donald Trump is “absolutely” tampering with witnesses. Jason Whitlock, a guest on Tucker Carlson’s daytime program, says that the patriarchy is a good thing and what God intended. Radical Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene loses her mind during an interview with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, claiming that masks and vaccines don’t work and that not using Ivermectin to treat COVID is “murder.” Voicemail caller puts the (hopefully) final note on the “leaving the country” controversy by confirming that David is not a “Jew traitor.”

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 2/2/22 (00:56:13)

On the Show: Whoopi Goldberg makes very confused statements about the Holocaust and Jews on The View, and is subsequently suspended for two weeks. A deeper look at Jordan Peterson’s nearly-unintelligible rant about “The Bible” on Joe Rogan’s recent podcast. Donald Trump turns on Republican Senator Lindsey Graham in a deranged Newsmax interview with Rob Schmitt. Donald Trump published a febrile, delusional statement demanding that his own former Vice President Mike Pence be investigated for not overturning the 2020 election in Trump’s favor, despite Joe Biden winning. Ron DeSantis is increasingly more favorable than Donald Trump and other Republicans in Florida in what might be a preview of the 2024 Republican Presidential primary. Former Republican President George W. Bush maxes out his political donations to Republicans who voted to impeach Donald Trump, including Congresswoman Liz Cheney and Senator Lisa Murkowski. The House Committee investigating the January 6, 2021 Trump riots received documents from the Trump administration that had been torn up and taped back together. New revelations exposed that Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani were much more directly involved in a plan to seize voting machines from across the country after the 2020 election than was previously known. Another voicemail caller reacts to David’s “leaving the country” segment by misunderstanding what it was actually about, this time pulling out old antisemitic tropes.

THE POSITIVE MIND: Resilience and the good child syndrome, Part 4 (00:58:00)

In this week’s show, Hosts talk about how “programming” in childhood can lead to inflexibility as an adult and a low level of resilience. Most often, children are programmed through negativity: “Don’t do that. Don’t touch that. Don’t complain.” This can force a child to create a “good child” persona that causes them to detach from a feeling self. They will carry this “good child” persona into adulthood, and lose the capacity to be real to themselves or any future partner. Kevin and Niseema talk about ways to undo this terrible and destructive syndrome.
