THE BRADCAST: 12/30/2024 Encore: Veteran media reporter Paul Farhi on Trump’s landslide win in ‘news deserts’ (00:58:00)

Encore: original airdate 12-10-2024. On today’s ‘BradCast’: ‘News deserts’ are areas where local newspapers have disappeared, and new research shows that the ongoing, rapid decline in local news sources played a disturbing role in the 2024 presidential election. Although Donald Trump barely won the election with a razor-thin margin, in ‘news deserts’ he won by a landslide. Former Washington Post media reporter PAUL FARHI explains the findings of the new 2024 State of Local News report from Northwestern University, which details how ‘news deserts’ came about, and how they increase political polarization, impact voters’ choices in elections, and much more. A Justice Department Inspector General’s new report shows how the first Trump Administration abused surveillance powers to spy on members of Congress and staff, journalists, and Kash Patel, Trump’s nominee to head the FBI. A major fire is tearing through Malibu, CA. Plus Desi Doyen has our new ‘Green News Report.’

CLIMATE CONNECTIONS: Satellite data reveals true scale of methane pollution (00:01:30)

New findings suggest that emissions of the potent global warming gas from landfills could be much higher than officially reported.

WHEN THE BIOMASS HITS THE WIND TURBINE #42: Zero Waste (00:28:38)

We, each one of us, produce a lot of garbage. About 4.6 lbs of garbage for each person per day. Nearly one ton of garbage per person per year. So how do we stop the madness ” or at least slow it down a bit? Join Annie and Jay Warmke of Blue Rock Station for a discussion of the realities of sustainable living.

The Problem: 250 million tons per year, 4.6 lbs per person per day

72% of solid waste could be reused or recycled (MN study)

Burned, Recycled (includes composting), Buried in the Ground

US recycles about 35% (Germany 65%) – around 10% in 1985

Plastic rate, from 9% in 2015 to 3% in 2019 (84% to landfill)

1/6th goes to China. In 2014 trash was US largest export by volume

1,000 years for bag to breakdown, then particles contaminate

18 billion disposable diapers per year, taking 500 years to decompose

Some studies say we will run out of landfill space in 18 years

Ground water contamination, out-gassing

Trash in the water (oceans)

Humans buy 1 million plastic bottles per minute

It is estimated that 4 trillion plastic bags are used worldwide annually. Only 1% of plastic bags are returned for recycling.

The main cause for the increase in plastic production is plastic packaging. Plastic packaging was 42% of all non-fiber plastic produced in 2015, and it also made up 52% of plastics thrown away.

Burning ” dramatic air pollution (dioxin, mercury, lead)

The Solution:

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. No straws, no bottles, no packaging

Zero waste shops (Guardian Article)

Online (virtual packaging)

Clothing swaps, second hand, donate (7% of landfill is textiles), 90% of donated clothing goes to textile recyclers

Compost (don’t waste in the first place)

Don’t eat fast food

Avoid packaging (complain)

Recycle: Costs more than throwing away

Not very efficient, 40,000 plastic bottles to offset one flight

Aluminum, paper and cardboard still considered efficient

Carbon tax might be more efficient than subsidizing recycling

ECONOMIC UPDATE: How US Capitalism Uses Nationalism REPEAT (00:29:00)

From 1945 to 1990 we were told a great struggle pitted capitalism against socialism/communism (chiefly the USSR and China). Yet still today, US leaders demonize Russia and China despite the end of communism in the USSR and a huge growth of capitalist enterprises in China. The explanation lies in US capitalism’s long history of using nationalism (i.e. foreign dangers) to justify tax-payer funded government actions to protect, subsidize, and support major capitalists’ dominant position in the US economy. ALAN WATTS: Stop Feeling Lost by Doing This (00:15:17)

If there is one simple question that bothers us all as human beings, it is: Why are we living? It is a burden on our shoulders, and we cannot think about it without going depressed or becoming sad, because simply we can’t answer it. We got blocked. In this lecture, Alan Watts talks about the game of life, how the answer of that question is: To play. To simply not take it seriously, to stay within the flow of life without having to be very strict and rigid about it. We have to take it as if it was a game. Because if we take it seriously, we will be forced to think scientifically, to predict the future, and be aware that any false move, would lead us to a fatal death, which is not the case.

Encore: original airdate 12-11-2024. On today’s ‘BradCast’: Wisconsin state prosecutors added ten new felony charges to Donald Trump’s accomplices who carried out the 2020 election fake electors scheme. The Franklin Fire in Malibu, CA continues to rage, exacerbated by climate change. FBI Director Christopher Wray says he will resign when Trump takes office, sparking concerns that he is ‘obeying in advance.’ Trump barely won a plurality in the 2024 election — not even a majority — but he and Republicans falsely insist he has a ‘mandate’. JULIA AZARI, Professor of Political Science at Marquette University, an expert on presidential mandates, explains the history and context of ‘mandate claiming’; how it has changed over the years; the many impacts on policy and presidential power and governance arising from such claims; how the media should respond no matter who makes them, and much more

TUC RADIO: WWI – The Christmas Truce of 1914 – TUC Archive for 2024 (00:29:00)

The Christmas Truce was an unofficial cease-fire on parts of the Western Front. Guns fell silent for one to several days. Soldiers emerged from the trenches and talked, exchanged gifts and kicked around a soccer ball. Trenches were close in some places, separated by 50 yards or less. The Story of the Christmas Truce WWI is a documentary film about this spontaneous cease-fire. Thanks to historians Peter Hart, Taff Gillingham and Robin Schaefer, and their choice of rare documentary photos, footage and archived letters from soldiers of both sides. This archival TUC Radio program first went into distribution on December 13, 2022. By coincidence on the same day that nearly 1,000 faith leaders called for a temporary ceasefire in the War in Ukraine. They wrote that a Christmas Truce can offer an opportunity for moral clarity and could be the first step toward a negotiated peace.

THE BRADCAST: 12/26/2024 Encore: Oligarchy Rises in U.S.; Mis-tallied Contests Discovered in Ohio County (00:57:30)

Encore: original airdate 12-16-2024. On today’s ‘BradCast’: A hand-count of the 2024 election in Ohio last week uncovered that three county-level races were mis-tallied, flipping their results. On Tuesday, all 50 states will report their Electoral College votes, without holding publicly-overseen hand-counts or audits strongly recommended by cybersecurity and voting system experts. Former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov pleaded guilty to lying and peddling disinformation given to him by Russian intelligence that falsely accused Joe Biden and his son Hunter of taking bribes. Donald Trump’s cabinet nominees are collectively the wealthiest in U.S. history as America slides further in oligarchy. Big Tech CEOs each donated $1 million tributes to Trump, and ABC News agreed to pay $15 million to settle Trump’s defamation lawsuit against an accurately reported story. Both are widely seen as payments to dissuade the Trump Administration from abusing power to go after their core businesses. Callers weigh in.

Mike Parson of Missouri and his decision-making discrepancies when it comes to a case of pardoning a White officer convicted of wrongfully killing a Black man, and failing to pardon a Black inmate on death row with considerable doubt cast on his case. We connect the idea of White supremacist institutions to this governor to better illustrate the concept for those who deny that White supremacy exists. The second half of the show we discuss Luigi Mangione and how the criminal justice system can often expend a benefit-of-the-doubt to felonious White actors, how that breaks down when class is introduced into the equation, and how infrequently such grace is extended to Black and Brown individuals. Our Way Black History Fact discusses Universal Oil, Gas, and Mining – the country’s first Black-owned oil company.

LITERATURE ALOUD: Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) by Harriet Beecher Stowe ch. 33 (00:16:54)

Among the most banned books in the United States, Uncle Tom’s Cabin or, Life Among the Lowly is a novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe which treats slavery as a central theme. Stowe was a Connecticut-born teacher at the Hartford Female Academy and an active abolitionist. The novel is believed to have had a profound effect on the North’s view of slavery. In fact, when he met Harriet Beecher Stowe, President Lincoln is said to have commented, “So you’re the little lady whose book started the Civil War.” First published on March 20, 1852, the story focuses on the tale of Uncle Tom, a long-suffering black slave, the central character around whose life the other characters—both fellow slaves and slave owners—revolve. The novel depicts the harsh reality of slavery while also showing that Christian love and faith can overcome even something as evil as enslavement of fellow human beings. CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Where Research Begins, with Tom Mullaney (00:28:00)

Where does research begin? Tom Mullaney and Christoper Rae say it starts *way* before we think it does.

They provide a curiosity-informed, generative process for finding and really understanding the questions underlying anything you might want to learn more about. They thought they were writing for an academic audience, but I think these are great life strategies for all of us. Their book, Where Research Begins: Choosing a Research Project That Matters to You (and the World) is a remarkable book — a workbook, really. A read both rigorous and delightful – I recommend it! “If you can stay in that place…the questions you come out with at the end are orders of magnitude better than if you just skip the introspective part and start writing a paper.” ~ Tom Mullaney

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN December 21, 2024 (00:59:30)

Segment One

We begin the show with Danielle Lee Thomson, Research Manager for CIP Election Rumor Research Team. We discuss her latest paper, which describes how the right wing uses theatrics, particularly the tools of IMPROV, to present their talking points. This strategy of using alternative media, instead of conventional news channels is very effective, because it is presented as entertainment, and viewers do not think as critically of the message as a result. Truth fragments are distorted to present their message.

Segment Two

We then catch up with Bill Curry and Robert Hennelly. We discuss New York’s push to force about 250,000 retired NY civil service workers to use United Health Care instead of the contracted health insurance that was bargained for by the unions that represent these former workers. A court issued a “promissory estoppel” to prevent this. We discuss how the United Health Care and other insurance companies plans that promise to replace and improve on Medicare are much inferior. We also discuss how the Democratic Party needs to restructure itself to be more responsive to voters’ needs.

SEA CHANGE RADIO: Matt Simon: Long-Duration Energy Storage (00:29:00)

When we think about the transition to renewable energy sources, many of us imagine rooftop solar panels and wind turbine-dotted hills. But it’s not just about capturing energy, it’s also about keeping it. This week on Sea Change Radio we speak with Matt Simon, a Grist senior staff writer, to discuss long-duration energy storage. The transition to renewables for utilities is still very much evolving — efficiency, intermittency, and storage are among the issues scientists have yet to perfect. Simon shares some ideas for how we can build upon existing technologies to store solar and wind power, with longer capacity than lithium-ion batteries, ranging from reservoirs and caverns to our existing fleet of electric vehicles.

Republicans will control the House and Senate, the White House, and dominate the Supreme Court, but Simon says she’s fired up to fight for what we’ve fought for in the areas of reproductive rights, low and middle-income housing, public safety, immigration and more. And that’s no wonder. Simons following Lee ” whose historic 26-year career in the legislature included often being in the minority, and once standing alone against granting the president unlimited war powers after 9/11. Like Lee, Simon began her activism as a single mother at Mills College, and that’s not all they have in common. Lee says Simons already made her proud. ECONOMIC UPDATE: The Persistence of Socialism (00:29:00)

In this week’s episode of Economic Update, Professor Wolff dives deep into why socialism remains a popular and successful economic system. Professor Wolff highlights new laws passed by the government of Spain that punish airline companies who employ ‘unjustified’ airline passenger fees. We then debunk the unsubstantiated and nonsensical myth we hear so often that: ‘Socialism has never worked,’ and finally we juxtapose the history of the last capitalist collapse (1930s Great Depression) when the US working class turned left versus the current crisis of US capitalism when the initial turn of the working class is to the right.

THE BRADCAST: 12/13/2024 Encore: Failed coup in South Korea; Attempted power-grab in NC  (00:58:00)

Encore: original airdate 12-3-2024. On today’s ‘BradCast’: Democracy is under attack again. The rightwing president of South Korea attempted a power grab, declaring martial law and attempting to shut down the country’s National Assembly, but his self-coup was stopped by quick action and fierce opposition from lawmakers and the public – – providing lessons for Americans in the years ahead. In North Carolina, the Republican-controlled state legislature has launched a power grab before they lose their heavily-gerrymandered supermajority, trying to ram through new laws stripping incoming Democratic statewide office-holders of authority and giving it to themselves. A Wisconsin judge struck down a GOP legislature power grab that stripped public sector workers of their collective bargaining rights. Minnesota Republicans want a do-over election in state house race narrowly won by a Democrat. Plus Desi Doyen has our new ‘Green News Report.’

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN December 14, 2024 (00:59:30)

Segment One

We begin the show with Mark Joseph Stern, senior writer for Slate. We discuss the question: Is the law for suckers now? What are the rules? And who verifies that the rules are being followed? The mainstream media is in thrall to the big money supporters of the president elect. Local media has been hollowed out, and information is being manipulated. Can voters make decisions for themselves, given the information has been distorted?

Segment Two

This week, The Best of The Attitude has guest host Lincoln Mitchel filling in for Arnie for our second Segment.

We then catch up with Alex Scrivener, Executive Director of the Democratic Security Institute, based in Tbilisi, Georgia. We discuss the mass protests in Georgia, and that government’s violent reaction. This is important to Americans, because this is a fascist response to popular opinion, and we may likely experience it, given Trump’s language and threats. In Georgia, demonstrations are often a response to government actions, not planned and ‘permitted’ by the government. In the US, there is complacency about our rights, and expectation that the government will not respond with lethal force. That complacency may be wrong. We should be prepared to resist more forcefully and massively, not violently. The US needs more of a disrespect for illegally acting authority. This should be our Cold War.

It’s now available again and should be accessible all the usual ways. My apologies for that. TUC Radio just aired Michael Parentis 1993 presentation on the Ganster Nature of the State and the JFK assassination in 2 parts over the last 2 weeks. Maybe you heard that, and with that hopefully still fairly fresh in your mind, over the next three weeks Ill be airing a 2015 presentation by British historian Francis Connolly on the JFK assassination and the history behind it that gives the historical context for the assassination and why it happened and who was involved. Naming the people involved in the planning AND execution of the assassination of JFK.

THE BRADCAST: 12/12/2024 Trump admits he can’t lower grocery prices; Biden commutes 1,500 sentences (00:57:30)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: President Joe Biden commuted the sentences of some 1,500 people in the largest single-day act of clemency in modern U.S. history. The Justice Department’s Inspector General issued a new report finding that that no undercover FBI employees were involved in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection, completely debunking Republicans’ false claims. During his campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly promised voters that he would ‘immediately’ lower grocery prices, but now admits he has no actual plan to do so. But Biden Administration FTC chair, Lina Khan, has protected consumers by blocking the proposed merger of grocery giants Kroger and Albertsons, while Trump’s FTC nominee vows to abandon Khan’s tough standards. North Carolina’s Republican-controlled legislature used the lame duck session to pass an unprecedented power grab, stripping incoming Democratic statewide office-holders of much of their authority. Happy news about beloved TV legend Dick Van Dyke. Plus Desi Doyen has our new ‘Green News Report.’

THE BRADCAST: ‘BradCast’ 12/11/2024 Guest: Author, Prof. Julia R. Azari on Presidential ‘mandates’ (00:57:30)

JULIA AZARI, Professor of Political Science at Marquette University, an expert on presidential mandates, explains the history and context of ‘mandate claiming’; how it has changed over the years; the many impacts on policy and presidential power and governance arising from such claims; how the media should respond no matter who makes them, and much more.

The first half of today’s show is dedicated to covering the early moves to dismantle the DEI initiatives that many companies adopted in 2020 in response to George Floyds death and the resulting protests. The early moves to dismantle the DEI initiatives are in response to the forthcoming Trump administration. For the second part of today’s episode, we explore a few recent examples of hypocrisy from the right including a state representative telling an indigenous candidate to go back to where she came from, the outrage at President Bidens lie when he suggested that he would not pardon Hunter Biden, but the lack of outrage over Trump appointing Project 2025 architects to key cabinet positions, and a Trump-appointed judge striking down overtime protections for American workers in favor of businesses. LITERATURE ALOUD: Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) by Harriet Beecher Stowe ch. 24-25 (00:27:17)

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Walk in Wonder: 1000 Miles on the Pacific Crest Trail, with Adam Segel-Moss  (00:28:00)

THE BRADCAST: 12/10/2024 Guest: Veteran media reporter Paul Farhi on Trump’s landslide win in ‘news deserts’  (00:58:00)

A Justice Department Inspector General’s new report shows how the first Trump Administration’ abused surveillance powers to spy on members of Congress and staff, journalists, and Kash Patel, Trump’s nominee to head the FBI. A major fire is tearing through Malibu, CA. Plus Desi Doyen has our new ‘Green News Report.’

But here’s the good news: there’s a way to hit the pause button, reclaim your peace, and rewrite the narrative playing in your head.

ECONOMIC UPDATE: Labor Unions and Political Power (00:29:00)

On this week’s episode of Economic Update, Professor Wolff devotes this week’s episode to Labor Unions and Political parties. We explain why US & Western capitalism today provoke labor and unions into more and more social and political action. The latest examples are the recent Canadian Postal Workers strike and the Barnes and Noble bookstore workers rally in New York City. The Professor discusses the history of the standard practice of employers filing complaints with the National Labor Relations Board to dispute the results of elections that form unions. Finally a major discussion on politics and the intersection of labor. What will be unions’ relationship to political parties? Will we see general strikes and mass popular mobilizations? Only time will tell.

Donald Trump nominated family members to top positions in his administration, including son-in-law Jared Kushner’s father, a convicted felon. EARTH RIOT RADIO #146: FREE CAPTAIN PAUL WATSON! To Defend the Whales, Dolphins, Sharks and Sea Turtles.  (00:29:00)

A healthy whale is a big profit-center just swimming out there for the taking. The sea has very little enforceable law. Its all very watery. The Japanese whaling industry wants one of the great earth-defending heroes of our time to go to prison for throwing a stink-bomb at a Japanese citizen on one of their massive death ship/factories. The murdered whale is conveyor-belted up into the hold of the ship and the products from the whale’s body are spit out the other side as consumable items. This is an old COLONIAL HELL and can’t happen to a defender of life of the stature of Captain Paul Watsons. We believe that ultimately, the immorality will prove a harpoon-dulling shield for these gangsters.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN December 7, 2024 (00:59:30)

Segment One

We begin the show with Bill Curry and Aaron Rosenthal. Bill is former aide to Bill Clinton, and Aaron is with the Org Northstar Policy. We discuss how the Democratic party must change to return to its roots: support for working Americans, rather than rich donors. Trump’s presidency will only make the distance between working people and the oligarchs greater.

Segment Two

We then catch up with Professor Beth Gazley, of Indiana University, Bloomington. She studies US nonprofit management and civil society policy. We discuss a new law that allows the government (esp. the Treasury Dept) to classify activist organizations as “domestic terrorists” and thereby deny them 501C3 status. This classification method is vague, and can allow political harassment of many organizations who may disagree with the administration. This is designed to chill the response of grass roots (locally funded) organizations that speak out against the administration.

MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR: Part 1 The Military Industrial Complex, Mafia & CIA and the JFK Assassination with Historian Francis Connolly (00:59:00)

TUC Radio just aired Michael Parentis 1993 presentation on the Gangster Nature of the State and the JFK assassination in 2 parts over the last 2 weeks.

This is the first of three parts. After the official Warren Report on the assassination came out, thousands of pages of documented evidence and witness testimony compiled during the extensive investigation of JFKs assassination, was seal and locked away, not to be released until 50 years passed. British Historian Francis Connolly sifted through all that evidence and testimony, as well as lots of other historical evidence to present the most comprehensive and fact based expose of the JFK assassination to date. And I’ve been fascinated by the JFK assassination for many years.

This is a fascinating in depth history lesson, beginning before WWII.

THE BRADCAST: 12/4/2024 Guest: Financial journalist David Dayen on Trump’s wildly corrupt tariff scheme (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The last U.S. House race of the 2024 election has been tallied, with Democrats flipping a Republican-held seat by just 187 votes, leaving the Republicans with a razor-thin majority. Rightwing pundit Dinesh D’Souza issued an apology and acknowledged that his 2020 election conspiracy film, ‘2000 Mules,’ was false and inaccurate. Investigative financial journalist David Dayen, Executive Editor of The American Prospect, explains Donald Trump’s threats to impose massive tariffs on goods imported into the United States, which will raise prices on everyday Americans, but will also open up ‘mind-boggling’ opportunities for unprecedented corruption and payoffs from corporate interests to buy favoritism from Trump and his administration, deepening America’s slide into oligarchy.

LITERATURE ALOUD: Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) by Harriet Beecher Stowe ch. 20 (00:35:15)

THE BRADCAST: 12/3/2024 Failed coup in South Korea; Attempted power-grab in NC (00:58:00)

Sydney, Australia’s newest community landmark is keeping history alive while respecting the feelings of those who lived it. This Way Out correspondent Barry McKay took us on an opening-day tour of some of Qtopia’s prominent collections, and got a peek behind the scenes.

Donald Trump nominated family members to top positions in his administration, including son-in-law Jared Kushner’s father, a convicted felon. Trump also nominated a longtime loyalist, the wildly unqualified Kash Patel, to head the FBI, where Patel promises to prosecute Trump’s perceived enemies in the government and media. President Joe Biden issued a full pardon for charges faced by his son, Hunter Biden, after previously pledging not to do so. Callers weigh in.

TED TALK: My descent into America’s neo-Nazi movement & how I got out – Christian Picciolini
(00:20:30)

At 14-years-old, Christian Picciolini went from naive teenager to white supremacist, and soon, the leader of America’s first neo-Nazi skinhead gang. How was he radicalized, and how did he ultimately get out? In this courageous talk, Christian shares a surprising and counterintuitive solution to hate in all forms. After leaving the white-supremacist skinhead movement that he helped build in the 1980s and 90s, Christian Picciolini co-founded Life After Hate, a nonprofit dedicated to helping people disengage from violent extremism. His memoir, White American Youth: My Descent into America’s Most Violent Hate Movement—and How I Got Out (Hachette), which details his involvement, and eventual disengagement, from the early American white nationalist movement, will be published on December 26, 2017. Christian lives in Chicago. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.

SPIRIT IN ACTION: Another Mother’s Child – A Jewish Quaker Reaches Out (00:55:00)

Many of us have been in pain about events in the Middle East for years, a pain that was horribly amplified by the massacre of Jews on October 7th, 2023, and the horrific and disproportional retribution that followed in Gaza by Israelis. Today’s guest is Sandy Green, a Jewish Quaker, formerly a Zionist, who found she could not un-see the evils perpetrated by Israel on Palestinians, not just recently, but for decades. Late in her long life, Sandy has become a visible activist, facing painful consequences, but remaining steadfast to a fuller and wider love. This show includes a couple-minute clip from the 3/28/2024 QuakerSpeak.com interview with Sandy Green, anonymously at the time, and a reading by Sandy of her poem, Another Mother’s Child. Among the places Sandy has spoken is the Fridays at Fetterman’s weekly protest. Past/present religious/spiritual influences: Jewish, Quaker

THE BRADCAST: 11/28/2024 Encore: ‘Bullet Ballot’ Claims and Other Arguments for Hand-Counting 2024 Votes; Gaetz report files hacked (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Concerns over the accuracy of the 2024 Election results are growing in the wake of cybersecurity and voting security experts urging the Harris Campaign to seek hand recounts in states where voting system software was breached and distributed after the 2020 Election. We explain new theories about the election concerns posed by financial services security expert Stephen Spoonamore – – but again, the only way to determine if the results were tabulated accurately is with a public hand-count of ballots. In Pennsylvania’s extremely close US Senate race, a court battle is underway over whether otherwise legal ballots should be tossed out if mail-in voters wrote the incorrect date on the outside envelope. DEEP DIVE CYBERSECURITY SHOW: The Case For The Editorial Process (00:58:35)

Disinformation, in part, drove the 2024 election. Real time information was perpetually poisoned by false narratives and the kicker of the whole thing is that Elon Musk openly embraced and encouraged this! If we kill the editorial process and information vetting, there is no coming back from the false realities that are being online and convincing people of things that simply aren’t true. This is what amps up violence and we need to explore the differences between actual vetted news and the fake garbage pervasive online. Don’t miss this episode.
