THE BRADCAST 4/28/22: Forewarned is Forearmed…on the GOP plan to steal 2024, on Putin’s plans in Ukraine (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: In a chilling opinion piece, Judge Michael Luttig, a very conservative, Republican-appointed federal judge, explains the real objective behind Republicans’ obsession with trying to make the 2024 election ‘a referendum’ on the 2020 election, ‘which even they know was not stolen.’ Declaring that ‘forewarned is to be forearmed,’ Luttig spells out how Republicans are setting up the elements they will need ‘to execute successfully in 2024 the very same plan they failed in executing in 2020,’ and explains the GOP’s radical legal theory, ‘the independent state legislature’ doctrine, that has gained traction among the rightwing majority on the stolen-and-packed U.S. Supreme Court. Russia appears to be regrouping in its bloody invasion of Ukraine, and may be planning to expand its war into Transnistria, Moldova. Russian state media and military have begun to frame the conflict as an existential ‘holy war.’ President Biden requested $33 billion in a supplemental funding package from Congress to help Ukraine continue to defend itself against Russia and provide vital humanitarian aid, and explained why he believed the assistance is necessary. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’
KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: Behind the Neat Myth of the American Revolution (00:59:01)
It’s the bedrock of who we are today. But to believe there was agreement among the Founding Fathers to replace plutocracy with democracy is just wrong. A lot of the answers as to where we find ourselves today, good and not so good, are there behind the reassuring simplistic myths. In this lively interview, historian Woody Holton reveals fascinating little-known facts from his new book Liberty is Sweet. For example, the issue of slavery was a factor used by both sides. And people of color were the worst victims of the revolution. Some of our Great Men vehemently opposed democracy which threatened to undermine their power. He says toxic masculinity almost lost the war. And our amazing founding mothers, from Abigail Adams to the heroic laundresses. It all goes on today.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 4/30/22 (00:59:30)
Segment One
We begin with Dr. Garret J. Martin, a Senior Professorial Lecturer in the School of International Service. We discuss the reelection of Macron as French President. This was a closely watched election by people in Europe and the US. LePen, his opponent, is a far right candidate, and it was feared that her friendship with Putin would put France in an untenable position, given the current war. France has had its own problems, both economic and social in recent years. The cost of living, supply chain problems, and others loom large. These will affect how Macron can govern. Macrons appeal was mostly to the older, conservative population. France needs to change.
Segment Two:
We then catch up with Daniel Cohan, a professor at Rice University, Environmental Engineering. Our discussion is the state of coping with climate change in the United States. We waste energy, and are not proactive in encouraging other countries to follow a lead. We also do not store enough energy. If we did, our climate crisis might be mediated somewhat.
GROWING GREENER: Enrich Your Soil With a Different Take on Composting (00:29:00)
With roots in traditional Korean agriculture, Bokashi composting has much to offer the contemporary gardener. Conway School graduate Boris Kerzner describes the process, explaining how you can pursue this process for recycling kitchen wastes ” including meat scraps and dairy ” to enrich your gardens soil in just weeks.
GOT SCIENCE?: Out of the Lab, Into the Community (00:29:00)

SEA CHANGE RADIO: Pt. 2: Recall Rubbish (00:28:59)
More than 20 years ago, sociologist Barry Glassner wrote his bestseller The Culture of Fear, where he explains why Americans tend to be unreasonably afraid of things like crime, drugs, people of color, immigrants, teenagers, etc. He writes, “The short answer to why Americans harbor so many misbegotten fears is that immense power and money await those who tap into our moral insecurities and supply us with symbolic substitutes.” This week on Sea Change Radio, the second half of our discussion with San Francisco deputy public defender, Peter Galloway. We delve further into the danger of cherry-picked crime statistics, look at the upcoming recall election of San Francisco’s relatively new District Attorney, Chesa Boudin, and examine the recent recall trend in the nation’s most populous state.

This is an excerpt from a 45 minute presentation – beginning with the history of the world wars. Professor Richard Wolff is the author of several books including Democracy at Work, Understanding Marxism, and Capitalism Hits the Fan. He hosts the weekly radio program Economic Update. LOPATE AT LARGE: Different: Gender Through the Eyes of a Primatologist (00:51:16)
World-renowned primatologist Frans de Waal draws on decades of observation and studies of both human and animal behavior in his book Different: Gender Through the Eyes of a Primatologist. He argues that despite the linkage between gender and biological sex, biology does not automatically support the traditional gender roles in human societies. De Waal challenges widely held beliefs about masculinity and femininity, and common assumptions about authority, leadership, cooperation, competition, filial bonds, and sexual behavior. Frans de Waal will discuss his thought-provoking approach to the long-running debate about the balance between nature and nurture, and where sex and gender roles fit in, on this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large.
ROBERT REICH: The System: Who Rigged It, How We Fix It (00:11:50)
Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich presents the reader’s digest of his latest book, The System: Who Rigged It, How We Fix It. He explores the system of power in America that bails out corporations instead of people, even in times of crisis, and breaks down how we have socialism for corporations and the rich, and harsh capitalism for everybody else. As power has concentrated in the hands of corporations and the wealthy few, those few have grabbed nearly all the economic gains — and political power — for themselves. Meanwhile, workers have been shafted. This isn’t a democracy, where all power is shared. It’s an oligarchy, where those at the top have the power to grab everything for themselves. But history shows that oligarchies cannot hold on to power forever. They are inherently unstable. When a vast majority of people come to view an oligarchy as illegitimate and an obstacle to their wellbeing — which is happening before our very eyes as this crisis exacerbates — oligarchies become vulnerable.
LITERATURE ALOUD: People of the Abyss (1903) by Jack London ch.12-15 (00:57:17)
Jack London lived for a time within the grim and grimy world of the East End of London, where half a million people scraped together hardly enough on which to survive. Even if they were able to work, they were paid only enough to allow them a pitiful existence. He grew to know and empathise with these forgotten (or ignored) people as he spoke with them and tasted the workhouse, life on the streets, … and the food, which was cheap, barely nutritious, and foul. (Summary by Peter Yearsley)

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 4/28/22 (00:57:15)
On the Show: Ro Khanna, Democratic Congressman representing California’s 17th district, joins David to discuss the Russian invasion of Ukraine, recent attacks against him by the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, the 2022 midterms, and much more. A discussion of whether true believers in the cult of Trumpism are more or less dangerous than the false or reluctant believers. A new report claims that President Joe Biden told former President Barack Obama that Biden does indeed plan to run for re-election in 2024. Radical Trumpist Republican Congressman Madison Cawthorn is implicated in an insider trading scheme and may have violated the STOCK Act. Bizarre Republican Arizona House candidate Ron Watkins delivers a cringeworthy debate performance in the recent Republican debate. California Republican Secretary of State candidate Rachel Hamm says that she is running because her son found Jesus in a closet. Roger Stone, associate to failed former President Donald Trump, has a new show on Lindell TV, and it’s a total train wreck, both from a technical and ideological standpoint. Voicemail caller is furious about tipping double standards.

ALAN WATTS: Stop Feeling Lost by Doing This (00:15:17)
If there is one simple question that bothers us all as human beings, it is : Why are we living ? It is a burden on our shoulders, and we cannot think about it without going depressed or becoming sad, because simply we can’t answer it. We got blocked. In this lecture, Alan Watts talks about the game of life, how the answer of that question is : To play. To simply not take it seriously, to stay within the flow of life without having to be very strict and rigid about it. We have to take it as if it was a game. Because if we take it seriously, we will be forced to think scientifically, to predict the future, and be aware that any false move, would lead us to a fatal death, which is not the case.

THE CHILDREN’S HOUR: Backyard Wildlife (00:58:00)
What’s wild about your backyard? This time on The Children’s Hour we explore creating a backyard or balcony to attract wildlife, in a visit with a “more than human geographer” Laurel Ladwig. She’s part of a movement of conservationists encouraging people to increase habitats around our homes. Planting flowers and other plants in order to attract wildlife to our yards helps critters who need more nectar, pollen, shade and food to survive in our artificial urban environments. Some wild creatures are dangerous like rattlesnakes, but others only look scary, like vinegaroons. Both live in Kids’ Crewmember Cade’s yard in the southwestern mountains. How can we encourage species that we enjoy while discouraging species we would rather not attract? We learn about why it’s so important to seek out plants which are native to where we live. Here’s an online site where you can learn more about what species can thrive around you, and survive the effects of climate change. The kids also meet Jim Battaglia from Wildlife Rescue of New Mexico, to learn what to do when we find injured wild animals in our yards, parks and playgrounds. This show is mixed with excellent music to encourage everyone to get outside, and plant something.

Caller points out that it’s hard to persuade people who have different first principles. Caller wants to convince his mom on the topic of abortion. Caller talks about how to better deliver COVID vaccines to developing countries. THE BRADCAST 4/21/22: DOJ’s Jan. 6 Trump investigation; Accountability news (00:58:24)
Encore: original air-date 4/7/2022. On today’s ‘BradCast’: The US Senate confirmed Judge Kentanji Brown Jackson as the nation’s first black female Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court by a 53-47 vote. More ballot eligibility challenges have been filed against Republican insurrectionists in Arizona: Reps. Paul Gosar and Andy Biggs, and State Rep. Mark Finchem, the Trump-endorsed candidate for AZ Secretary of State, under the 14th Amendment clause barring from office anyone who has violated their oath to the Constitution by engaging in or aiding insurrection or rebellion. The New York Attorney General asked a court to hold Donald Trump in civil contempt for refusing to comply with court orders to turn over documents in her probe into bank, tax, and insurance fraud. Manhattan D.A. claims his criminal investigation into the same allegations remains ongoing. Law professor RANDALL D. ELIASON, former Asst. U.S. Attorney, counters public criticism that U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland’s investigation into the January 6th insurrection is proceeding too slowly. Eliason explains the contours and legal requirements of the DOJ’s massive investigation into the insurrection, and why he believes that Garland is methodically working up the legal food chain toward Trump. Eliason also offers insights into the House January 6 committee’s criminal contempt of Congress citations for Trump cronies, how a Trump 2024 candidacy might affect the investigation, and whether far-right Justice Clarence Thomas should recuse himself from insurrection cases involving his far-right activist wife. Segment One
We begin with Eric Kulisch, a Supply Chain & Air Cargo Editor at FreightWaves(dot)com. We discuss the emerging additional problems with the supply chain, now caused by the pandemic lockdown in Shanghai, China, the largest container port in the world. This is also a hub for manufacturing. The port is now congested because lockdown has been instituted due to Corona. In addition, deliveries to Shanghai are delayed. Worldwide sourcing is a problem now and will be made worse even when lockdown is lifted. Along with the lack of parts, job losses will occur because of US and other countries factories idling.
Segment Two:
We then catch up with Jeremy Stahl, a senior editor at Slate and author of Why Hasn’t Trump Been Indicted Yet?
We discuss the reasons why the country has essentially been ignoring the January 6th investigations and why participants are not shunned. Is this preparation for 2024, when any outcome not favorable to Republicans is to be considered invalid and therefore to be contested violently? We talk about the various possible civil and criminal indictments that might be brought, and possible outcomes in the event.

TUC RADIO: Who’s Counting -War is the biggest growth industry of all Archive 2/2(00:29:00)
Marilyn Waring was only 22 when she was first elected to the New Zealand Parliament. She was shocked and dismayed when she learned that all countries that are members of the UN are forced to keep their books and design their budgets under the system of National Income Accounting. The international trade in arms is the biggest growth industry of all. Killing people, or preparing to kill them, is considered very valuable in the international economic system. The death, homelessness, injury, poverty and starvation caused by the use of these weapons is not even registered as a deficit. This segment opens with war. Under the GDP accounting system war is the biggest growth industry of all. A segment recorded in the Philippines shows that the labor of women feeding their children with subsistence agriculture is of no value, while sexual slavery that brings tourists to the country is counted as valuable in the GDP. Waring ends by proposing a time based accounting system and recommends that women take over the political process by demanding gender parity.

In his astute and timeless book, How to Lie with Statistics, Darrell Huff writes, “The secret language of statistics, so appealing in a fact-minded culture, is employed to sensationalize, inflate, confuse, and oversimplify.” This statement is at least as true as it was in 1954 when it was first published. Among the subjects most prone to statistical abuse: criminal justice. Our guest today on Sea Change Radio is Peter Calloway, an outspoken public defender whose Twitter thread about crime in San Francisco went a little bit viral last week. In the first half of our two-part conversation, we discuss the significance of US Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, who is not only the first Black woman to serve on the highest court, but also the first public defender. We also talk about the role of the public defender’s office and why people tend to fall for sensationalized crime statistics.
COOL SOLUTIONS: Clean Truck Coalition Puts Pedal to the Metal (00:28:00)
Hearing scientists tell the world once again that we’re not moving fast enough on climate might make a person feel helpless. This is a story about why speaking up matters and how people raising their voices together are speeding the switch to electric and hydrogen trucks. While the price of diesel is high at the pump today, in port and warehouse communities it has been costing lives for years. A broad coalition went to California’s capitol and got the state to double the speed of transition to zero emission trucks. That rule has now been adopted by 6 states, showing that when individuals speak out together, we can bring about high level change. We hear the Air Board testimony of regular people who spoke up and made a difference.

LITERATURE ALOUD: “The Yellow Wallpaper” (1899) by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (00:32:08)
Originally considered a gothic horror story, Gilman’s proto-feminist story is rich with suggestive detail and disturbing details. Inspired by her own treatment with “the rest cure” by Dr. Weir, Gilman gives us a chilling sense of what it feels like to be so dismissed and micromanaged by authority to the extent that we begin see strange things.

Produced by Andy Stuhl. In February 2022, Wave Farms Radio Deprogramming workshop convened a diverse, international group of media artists and radio practitioners around a proposition to critically examine and creatively invert the usual routines that structure the radio medium. Christof Migone’s Radio Naked provided a central inspiration for the workshop, which culminated with participants drafting short deprogramming prompts and then producing audio interpretations of each other’s prompts. This hour-long broadcast piece gathers all 29 of these short sound works, intermixed with the audio versions of Radio Nakeds 22 prompts (in addition to Migone, contributors to these include Jennifer Cherniak, Amos Latteier, Chris Myhr, and Gintas Tirillis). The recording also includes a series of excerpts from the Radio Deprogramming listening syllabus, featuring sound from John Cage and Morton Feldman, Shelley Pope, Sherre DeLys and Rick Moody with John Lurie, and Anna Friz and Emmanuel Madan; as well as a collaborative sound collage experiment that workshop participant Justin Maiman subsequently produced for his show on WGXC, the Ginger Radio Hour. It includes an introduction from Andy Stuhl, Wave Farms 2021-2022 Radio Artist Fellow. ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 4/15/22 (00:58:04)
Part 1:
We talk with Scott Braddock, editor of the Quorum Report, Dean of the Austin Press Corps. We discuss Texas politics, and the latest stunts that the governor, Abbott is pulling. Some of these are damaging the US as a whole, such as his insisting on inspecting food shipments from Mexico, forcing the shippers to spend many hours waiting at the border, (all bridges are shut down) while they run out of fuel, and the food spoils.. Abbot is deliberately slowing the supply chain. He has also sent migrants to Washington D.C. on buses, as a publicity gambit. Border security is a federal, not state responsibility. He appears to be preparing to run for president., and seeking all the publicity he can get. In Texas, a woman was charged with self-aborting, and later charges withdrawn, because the law exempts such an action. The officials involved seemed to be confused.
A woman who is on death row may have the execution stayed, though Abbott, who could have done this on his own, has not yet stepped in, even though many legal opinions are that she should not be executed due to errors and other circumstances.
Part 2:
We talk with Robert Hockett and Bill Curry. Hockett teaches legal, financial and some philosophical subjects at Cornell University in New York, where he is the Edward Cornell Professor of Law and a Professor of Public Policy. He is also Senior Counsel at Westwood Capital, a socially responsible investment bank in midtown Manhattan, and a Fellow of The Century Foundation. Bill Curry is a lawyer, former two time nominee for gov of CT. He was Counselor to the President and served as domestic strategist in the Clinton White House from February 21, 1995 until January 20, 1997 and served as the head of Freeze Voter, a nuclear freeze group.
We discuss the need for the American economy to be rebuilt. If we have a goal of zero emissions by 2030, this could be accomplished because we would be doing the economic overhaul anyway. We need to solve the climate problem, and go green. There are many reasons, including our survival. In the near term, we need to think about our security.
We also discuss the latest news about Twitter and Elon Musks offer to buy the company. This is a way of further privatizing and feudalizing the public square. If the bid to buy Twitter is successful, the free speech on Twitter will be free speech as defined by Musk. The company is able to now control content, and with Musk in charge, who will control? Inflation is world wide, and discussing it as only an American phenomenon is illogical. We should consider inflation as a profit-push event, since there is a relatively small portion of the population that is getting richer, while most suffer the effects.

LAW AND DISORDER 4/18/22 (00:57:56)
Federal Case Against Donald Trump
There is a great deal of speculation as to whether former president Donald Trump will eventually be indicted for crimes allegedly committed while he was the president. Well, in what might prove to be the most serious blow yet to Trumps effort to stay out of jail, on March 28th, a federal judge ruled that both former president Trump and Atty. John Eastman who had advised him on how to overturn the 2020 election had most likely committed felonies, including obstructing the work of Congress and conspiring to defraud the United States. The ruling represents a highly significant breakthrough for the House committee investigating the January 6th attack on the Capitol. Judge David O. Carter found that the actions taken by Trump and Eastman amounted to a coup in search of a legal theory.
Russia, Ukraine War Analysis
And now to the matter of Russia’s war in Ukraine and the role of a free press in war time. Today, much is made of the fact that in Putin’s Russia, little or no accurate news of the war is reaching the Russian people. Instead, what they read in their newspapers or hear on their radios and see on their televisions is no more or less than what Putin wants them to read or see or hear. Meanwhile, here in the United States, the American people are provided with virtually non-stop newspaper and live eve-witness television coverage of the war in Ukraine; coverage that comes from reporters and others, often in real time, and on the ground in the middle of Putin’s war. Surely the dramatically contrasting way in which the Russian people and the American people are experiencing the war via the media must play a major role in how the two peoples feel about the war. So, too, how the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were covered by the US media must have played a role in how we, the American people, felt about those wars. Well, today we look at the role a nations media can play in shaping public support for or against a war that is being fought by that nation.

THE BRADCAST 4/14/22: Banner Year Continues for the GOP ‘Voter Fraud’ Industrial Complex (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: New weekly jobless claims report again shows that U.S. unemployment rates under President Biden’s economic policies have fallen to their lowest levels since 1968, alongside rising wages. Yet corporate media outlets are not informing the public about these economic facts, or are downplaying positive economic news by reporting rising wages as ‘high costs’ of labor. The corporate media also isn’t covering a new Gallup poll that shows strong majorities of Americans overwhelmingly support Biden’s policies and proposals for climate change, all part of the Biden/Democrat Build Back Better bill, which every Senate Republican plus Joe Manchin (D-Fossil Fuels) helped to kill last year. The never-ending GOP ‘voter fraud’ industrial complex is having a banner year amid new revelations of Republicans caught committing voter fraud and election fraud themselves. In Florida, several Republican voters were indicted or pleaded guilty for intentionally voting multiple times, but because they’re white and Republican, they’re getting only a slap on the wrist. The Colorado GOP endorsed an indicted election tamperer for Sec. of State, and an election fraudster/insurrectionist for U.S. Senate. North Carolina removed Trump’s Chief of Staff Mark Meadows from the voter rolls while the state probes his own apparent voter fraud. Yet the fraudulent GOP ‘voter fraud’ industry continues raking in cash from the brain-poisoned MAGA base by pretending that Democrats are committing massive voter fraud. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’
KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: How We Passively Enable Tyranny (00:59:17)
Since Plato’s allegory of the cave, tyrants have successfully manipulated the projected images the public sees. On January 6th, Trump told the insurrectionists they were being patriots. And they believe him. On this show, philosophy professor Andrew Fiala talks about his new book Tyranny from Plato to Trump: Fools, Sycophants, and Citizens. The discussion looks behind the veneer of legitimacy of tyrannical power and sees that people who feel powerless seek the love of a father figure. A worship of celebrity and wealth bolster the acceptance of American tyranny. Our founders knew an educated public was essential to having a democracy. A challenge.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN (00:59:30)
Segment One:
First off is Aaron Mak, a technology writer for Slate. We discuss with recent developments in the Twitter saga. Elon Musk first was said to join the Board at Twitter, causing consternation among Twitter employees and users. Days later, he rejected that outcome, and is now only a major stockholder. But this frees him from fiduciary responsibilities, thus enables him to buy more stock, and influence the company in that fashion. The outcome is not clear. We talk about the possibilities and eventualities that might arise.
Segment Two:
We then catch up with Dr. Garrett Martin, a Senior Professorial Lecturer, and the Co-Director of the Transatlantic Policy Center, in the School of International Service. Our chat centers around this week’s primary elections in France. We discuss the way that Macron and LePen are presenting themselves to the voters, and the respective campaign styles they’re using. This election will have a great impact on NATO, particularly important this year with the Russian-Ukrainian war raging on their eastern borders.

TUC RADIO: Who’s Counting (00:28:59)
Marilyn Warings work and intriguing life are described in a documentary film by Terre Nash. Im bringing back the soundtrack of this film to support a debate on the unquestioned need for economic growth at all cost and on what course to take to end the war on Ukraine. At age 22 (in 1974) Marilyn Waring became the youngest member of the New Zealand Parliament. She chaired the prestigious Public Expenditures Committee and became familiar with the Gross Domestic Product system and decided to disclose its pathologies in a film, her teachings at AUT University in Auckland and really her life as a feminist economist. The film, Who’s Counting traces her quest to explore how the fate of women and of the earth are irrevocably tied up with the deadly pursuit of economic growth.
Marilyn Waring was shocked and dismayed when she learned that all countries that are members of the UN are forced to keep their books and design their budgets under the system of National Income Accounting. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak with Kevin Jennings, the CEO of Lambda Legal, one of the nations leading advocacy groups for the LGBTQ community.

DAVID PAKMAN SHOW 4/13/22 (00:55:06)

Republican strategist Susan Del Percio says that Donald Trump’s “dwindling” rally crowds are evidence that his base is diminishing. CNN+, CNN’s new streaming service, has an absolutely disastrous launch and is already downsizing. Donald Trump appears filled with glee at a recent event when talking about Nancy Pelosi contracting COVID. Fox News host Maria Bartiromo suggests impeaching Joe Biden, and it’s too crazy even for Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. Oklahoma Republicans pass a law forcing women to have the baby’s of their rapists as Roe v Wade is now in serious jeopardy as we await the forthcoming Supreme Court decision. Voicemail caller suggests David is racist for mentioning Oprah Winfrey’s responsibility for making Mehmet Oz a household name.

They seem to believe the same is true of proposing a black woman for the US Supreme Court… Also Thom reviews the incredible takedown of Josh Hawley on the US Senate floor by Brian Schatz from Hawaii . RADIO ART HOUR: Susan Stone, Tony Schwartz (00:58:00)
This week works from two artists who worked with New York City radio stations, Susan Stone from WBAI and Tony Schwartz from WNYC. First, “House with a View” by Stone. “House with a View” was created by American radio artist Susan Stone who has kindly contributed the piece, which is not widely available, to the Wave Farm Radio Art Archive. Stone had her start in radio at WBAI in NYC in 1979 producing a radio show called “Radio Schizophonia” with fellow radio artist Gregory Whitehead. She was involved for many years with Pacifica Radio KPFA-FM in Berkley California. Stone wrote to me about the process of creating House with a View, which was inspired by her short radio piece called Couch, which is also included in the Archive. You can actually hear clips of Couch and another of her shorts, Langue Etude, in the longer piece “House with a View” Stone writes, I wanted to play with the sonic construct of moving through rooms, sounding out what might have transpired within each one. At the time the tech-play was setting up long acetate tape loops, threaded through standing audio tape decks, the tape crisscrossing my studio like a cats cradle…This created a choral outcome through the chance operations of phrasing “- how one voice became many with timing variations, one sentence at a time. – Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2019/2020, Karen Werner. Then tune in “Favorite Sounds;” “How We Remember;” and “Music in Marble Halls” from Schwartz (1962-1970), also introduced by Werner. For over 30 years Schwartz produced weekly radio programs about sound for the NYC public radio station, WNYC. Schwartz also created records for Smithsonian folkways that feature his distinct style, described as part anthropological study, part hometown travelogue. Schwartz developed a portable tape recording set-up in the 195Os which enabled him to collect sounds outside the studio ” on the streets and in his home. He edits and presents the pieces in a distinct way. Plus, Schwartz is very likable; a tenderness, humor, curiosity, and intimacy come through in his pieces. A poignant detail is that he was agoraphobic and rarely traveled outside his NYC neighborhood. His recordings create an expansive sonic world. The first of these three pieces by Schwartz is called “Favorite Sounds” and was recorded at the Jewish Guild for the Blind in New York City in 1963. The second features the voices of New York City teenagers, and is called “How We Remember” and is from 1970. And the third piece in this selection is about the pleasures of sound called “Music in Marble Halls,” created in 1962. The first two pieces are from the Library of Congress Tony Schwartz collection: https://www.loc.gov/rr/record/schwartzrecordings.html. The third piece is from Schwartzs Folkways album, “You’re Stepping on My Shadow, Sound Stories of NYC.” These are also introduced by Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellow 2019/2020, Karen Werner.

Democratic Senator Brian Schatz absolutely destroys Republican Senator Josh Hawley over his attempt to block President Joe Biden’s Defense Department nominations. A particularly disheveled Donald Trump delivers a slurring speech to a weaponized rally crowd in Selma, North Carolina. Radical Republican Congressman Madison Cawthorn runs a Christian faith healing scam in front of Trump’s rally crowd in Selma, North Carolina. Texas is the state with the largest percentage of uninsured people.
The governor, Abbott, has decided to fly undocumented people to Washington, D.C. as a political theater stunt. THE BRADCAST 4/7/22: Randall D. Eliason on DOJ’s Jan. 6 Trump investigation; Accountability news (00:58:00)
Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’
KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE (00:59:52)
Yes, it’s that time of year again. Taxes. Working people have been subsidizing the rich for far too long. All polls show that support for finally taxing the richest is hugely popular. Of course, the Republicans openly serve that top percent, but why are the Democrats so timid? On this show The New Republics Timothy Noah looks at why Bidens Billionaire Tax is not a full tilt effort. And Noah points out that at least one Republican who was far better on taxing the rich than Clinton and other bourgeois Democrats. And the economy is not weaker but is stronger when the rich pay their fair share. Noah also says the key to enacting a progressive agenda is unions.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 4/9/22 (00:59:30)
Segment One: We begin with E J Dionne about the idea of universal voting in the US. Australia already has such a practice. 96% of the population are registered to vote. Instituting this in the US would encourage more people to vote. Setting aside a day for voting would also increase participation. This would mean that all votes would be more representative of the people who are voters. This is something conservative lawmakers are deathly afraid of as they would most likely lose their grip on every level of American Governance.
Segment Two: We then catch up with Caroline Fredrickson, who reviewed The Anti-Oligarchy Constitution. What an enlightening conversation this was as we talk about her take aways about how the framers intended our government to work, and how the US Supreme Court has misinterpreted the US Constitution over the years. How can Congress defeat the Court, which seems to defend the American oligarchy. From the original intent of protecting the democracy, the Court has morphed laws into economic predation.

As we’ve been covering for years, a new report finds that jobs, income, and GDP are consistently higher under Democratic Presidents. Radical Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz votes against a bill which caps the price of insulin to the end user, suggesting that people instead lose weight. A man wearing an “F Joe Biden” hoodie is filmed searching for and threatening to kidnap “non-binaries” at a motel. RADIO ART HOUR (01:00:50)
This broadcast features Aki Onda’s Nam June’s Spirit Was Speaking to Me an installation at the 2022 Toronto Biennial. Write’s Aki Onda, Nam Junes Spirit Was Speaking to Me occurred purely by chance. In 2010, I spent four days at the Nam June Paik Art Center on the outskirts of Seoul, South Korea for a series of performances and had plenty of free time to wander. The building was packed with an impressive array of installations, sculptures, drawings, and print ephemera. I have always felt a close kinship with Paik, and so it was a great opportunity to immerse myself in his works. It was that night I received first contact, via a hand-held radio in a hotel room in Seoul. It was out of the blue. Scanning through the stations, I stumbled upon what sounded like a submerged voice, and began recording. I concluded that this was Paik’s spirit reaching out to me. The project continued to grow organically as I continued to channel Paik’s spirit over long distances, receiving cryptic broadcasts and messages. The series of seances, conducted in different cities across the globe, began in Seoul in 2010, and continued in Koln, Germany in 2012; Wrocaw, Poland in 2013; and Lewisburg, USA in 2014. The original recordings were captured by the same radio with almost no editing, save for some minimal slicing. Paik is known for his association with shamanism, a practice that constantly surfaces in his works throughout his career. In an interview, he stated: In Korea, diverse forms of shamanism are strongly remained. Even though I have created my work unconsciously, the most inspiring thing in my work came from Korean female shaman Mudang. Paik himself was a master shaman and used shaman rituals and symbols for staging his vivid performances and installations. These recordings became a way for me to explore the mythic form of radio, a medium which is full of mysteries. The transmissions captured may be secret broadcasts on anonymous radio stations. There are in fact hundreds of these stations around the world, although the numbers dwindle as clandestine messages can now be sent via encrypted digital channels. Some of these stations were likely for use by the military, a part of espionage or relics of the Cold War. But many others continue without apparent explanation. These are just some of the questions that remain unanswered.

DAVID PAKMAN 4/4/22 (00:55:49)
On the Show: Darlene Swaffar, small business owners and Republican House candidate for Florida’s 22nd District, endorsed by Michael Flynn and Roger Stone, joins David, but refuses to say who the current president is, misunderstands the estate tax, has no idea about gas prices, and generally represents all that is wrong with the United States of America. Republican Senator Roy Blunt is asked why he won’t be voting to confirm Joe Biden’s Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson, and he delivers an unintelligible word salad in response. Anti-abortion activist Lauren Handy is caught with five fetuses in her house by police in another despicable exposition of the vile anti-abortion movement. Donald Trump, playing the role of dangerous cult leader, tells an unhinged audience endless lies at his latest rally in Michigan. Speakers at Donald Trump’s latest Michigan rally included Republican Lisa McClain, who falsely claimed Trump took out Osama Bin Laden, and a pastor who prayed that Trump is the current President. Cultist attendees at Donald Trump’s latest rally in Michigan cry for Trump to return, oppose Critical Race Theory, believe Trump will “save America,” and that Trump is the “modern day Muhammad Ali.”

THE BRADCAST 4/1/22: Eric Kramer of Arizona for Fair Elections; Good economy news; Annoy a Nazi! (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: Get a booster shot if you haven’t yet, with the new COVID variant BA.2 now dominant in the US. COVID hospitalizations are at their lowest rate since pandemic record-keeping began. New jobs report shows the unemployment rate is at its lowest in half a century amid a booming economy. Experts say job openings are going unfilled due to lack of childcare assistance, which was blocked when Republicans and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) obstructed President Biden’s Build Back Better Act. Amazon warehouse workers in Staten Island, NY are the first to unionize. A second unionization vote at a Bessemer, AL Amazon warehouse is too close to call. Arizona Republican Gov. Doug Ducey signed a wildly unconstitutional new voter suppression law that requires voters to prove citizenship to vote, and blocks them from utilizing early voting, vote by mail, and voting for state offices and U.S. President. ERIC KRAMER, Director of the Arizona Deserves Better non-profit, explains the draconian new state law, HB 2492, how it targets Native American and elderly voters in particular, and how voting rights advocates are fighting back. Kramer explains their effort underway to qualify a new statewide initiative for the November 2022 ballot, Arizona for Fair Elections, which will overturn the new voter suppression measures and prevent Arizona’s increasingly extremist, radical Republican state legislature from enacting them again. Also today: House Democrats voted to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level, but Senate Republicans will filibuster it, despite overwhelming public support. Plus: a new ditty from Canadian comedian Stewart Reynolds, who urges you to ‘Annoy a Nazi’ today…

Tune in “Turn On The News” each week for the latest news, radio art, and more from our robot reporters, making sure you hear both sides — good and evil — every time you “Turn On The News.” It is often a mash-up of the week’s news, and sometimes a radio news fantasy with song parodies and covers similar to “Dr. Demento” and comedy skits and more.
ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN 4/1/22 (00:57:59)
Part 1:
We talk with Scott Braddock, dean of the Austin Press Corps, about the performance of Texas senators during the Katanji Brown Jackson confirmation hearings. Cruz, predictably, grandstanded, since he appears to be running for president. Cornyn has his target chosen: gay marriage revocation, assuming that the abortion bans will all stand. Both showboated for the cameras. Trump himself is losing some support, because of his focus on his message: himself. People in the country are worried about inflation, even as governors are busy spending federal dollars to prop themselves up. The culture wars are in full swing.
Part 2:
We talk with Harold Meyerson, of the American Prospect, and Bill Curry, former advisor to Pres. Clinton. We discuss how many people moved to small towns and red states during the pandemic. There are several reasons, most of them are economic: better housing affordability, climate, and some liberal policies: lower taxes in red states. Many blue states have high property taxes because those are what pays for schools. These are are regressive.
We also discuss Clarence and Ginny Thomas. Do we have a right to know Clarence Thomas health status? How do we treat them? Will she be summoned by the Jan 6 Committee? Will she comply? It appears that the Republicans now define their party by Trumps psychology. His lunacy has become their ideology. Is this politically actionable? We also touch on the newly emerging Covid problem in China, and how it will likely affect supply chains, and the world’s economies.
SOJOURNER TRUTH: Weekend Roundtable (00:58:13)
Today on Sojourner Truth Radio, Laura Carlsen, Jackie Goldberg & Dr. Gerald Horne join host Margaret Prescod for their Friday roundtable to discuss the latest on the ongoing Ukraine Russia conflict and its impact on the rest of the world, as well as their thoughts on the supreme court hearings for Ketanji Brown Jackson.

LAW AND DISORDER 3/28/22 (00:58:00)
If the U.S. nuclear policy doesnt change immediately and rapidly we are in a lot of trouble. Seventy-seven years ago, the United States became the first, and so far the only, country to use nuclear bombs when we destroyed the two Japanese cities of Hiroshima and then Nagasaki to frighten the Russians and secure an immediate and unconditional surrender of Japan in World War II. The dropping of these bombs was the first move against Russia that would devolve two years later in 1947 into the Cold War. The threat of nuclear war has never eased and it is now imminent with the fighting in the Ukraine which could draw the U.S. and NATO into a direct conflict with Russia. We are now in a new stage of this war. It has become hot and so perilous it threatens all of humanity, all of earths creatures, with annihilation. Any mistake, any miscalculation would quickly and irretrievably doom us all. This almost happened during the Cuban Missile Crisis where nuclear war was avoided, according to scholars, by luck and decent leadership. What has been the history of attempts to contain and roll back the threat of nuclear war? What has been tried and what is failed? What will it take to get the nine countries who possess nuclear weapons to give them up?
The Veterans for Peace organization spelled it out clearly. There should be a no first use policy and nuclear missiles must be taken off hair trigger alert. The United States should rejoin the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, from which George W. Bush and Donald Trump withdrew, respectively. The U.S. should sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Our country should initiate negotiations to reduce and eventually eliminate all nuclear weapons, as required by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, to which the U.S. is a party. To start, there must be a cease-fire in the Ukraine, the withdrawal of Russian forces, and guarantees of Ukrainian sovereignty and Russian security. Guest ” Peter Kuznick is a professor of history at American University and directs the Nuclear Studies Program. at that institution. Peter and Oliver Stone wrote The Untold History of the United States and also produced a showtime documentary series based on the book.
World Peace Through Law: Replacing War with the Global Rule Of Law
In 1945, following World War I and World War II, wars that claimed millions of lives, the nations of the world enacted the United Nations Charter to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war. The Charter prohibits the use of military force except in self-defense after an armed attack by another state or when the Security Council approves it. The five victors of World War II, who became the permanent members of the Security Council, agreed to the Charter because they each received a veto over matters of war and peace. The United States is a party to the 1970 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Nevertheless, it continues to violate the provision of that treaty that requires the parties to move toward the elimination of nuclear weapons. Although he won the Nobel Peace Prize, Barack Obamas administration advanced a policy, which Donald Trump and Joe Biden continued, to develop leaner and meaner nuclear weapons. The proposed U.S. budget calls for nearly $2 trillion over the next 30 years to build two new bomb factories, missiles, planes, submarines and redesigned warheads. In spite of the UN Charter and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, we are now facing the most dangerous threat of nuclear war in the last 60 years.
Guest – James Ranney is a retired Adjunct Professor at Widener Law School, co-founder of the Jeanette Rankin Peace Center, a legal consultant to the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, and a board member of the Project for Nuclear Awareness. Professor Ranney has written a book called World Peace Through Law: Replacing War with the Global Rule of Law. In this book, he calls for arms reduction, including the abolition of nuclear weapons, and global alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, with enforcement mechanisms.

THE BRADCAST 3/31/22 (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: President Biden announced the release of 1 million barrels of oil per day, for as many as 180 days, from the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve to lower gas prices that have spiked due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Biden criticized Big Oil for profiteering, raising prices on consumers and making record profits while refusing to increase production, and he urged Congress to enact a ‘Use It Or Lose It’ law levying a fee for the industry’s stockpile of 9,000 inactive, unused drilling permits on public lands. Biden will also invoke the Defense Production Act to ramp up American production of minerals needed for electric vehicles, clean energy, and battery production. Biden also unveiled long-term actions to reduce energy demand through energy efficiency, and address the climate crisis by ending US dependence on fossil fuels. A federal judge in Florida struck down parts of the Republican-controlled state legislature’s new voter suppression law as unconstitutional and racially motivated. Moreover, he invoked a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, used against repeat violators, which will force the state to obtain approval from the Justice Department before implementing new voting restrictions that have a racially discriminatory effect on voters. Even though the landmark ruling may ultimately be overturned by the corrupt, stolen-and-packed rightwing majority on the US Supreme Court, it is a critical marker in the fight to defend voting rights. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’
KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: Supreme Court Too Supreme (00:59:02)
It was not intended to be this supreme. But since Brown v Board of Education desegregating schools, even Democrats have been complacent and yielded too much authority to the court. America’s founders focused on freeing our government from oligarchs. On this show Georgetown Law visiting professor and member of the Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court Caroline Frederickson reveals how far off course the court has gotten.

Segment Two:
We then catch up with Ben Elgin who writes about business and climate change for Bloomberg. He talks to us about carbon offsets. This is a Billion dollar market, but not regulated or controlled to test if offsets are really making a difference in the climate. No actual changes are being noted by climatologists, and many companies are benefiting from the carbon market without providing proof of different practices or outcomes. We are paying owners to not do what they would not do anyway. Changes are needed.

VOX: How Southern socialites rewrote Civil War history (00:06:55)
The United Daughters of the Confederacy was a significant leader of the “Lost Cause,” an intellectual movement that revised history to look more favorably on the South after the American Civil War. They were women from elite antebellum families that used their social and political clout to fundraise and pressure local governments to erect monuments that memorialized Confederate heroes. They also formed textbook review committees that monitored what Southern schoolchildren learned about the war. Their influential work with children created a lasting memory of the Confederate cause, and those generations grew up to be the segregationists of the Jim Crow Era in the South.
