LITERATURE ALOUD: E.A. Poe – “Masque of the Red Death” and “The Cask of Amontillado” (00:31:44)
During the month of October and in honor of Halloween, Literature Aloud will feature short ghost and horror stories. Edgar Allan Poe is one of America’s most well-known writers who explored psychological themes well ahead of when academics came up with names for them. In “Masque of the Red Death” we see a narrative about human social practices and contagious plague, a theme especially relevant in this time of Covid-19 pandemic. His tale “The Cask of Amontillado” explores the chilling lengths to which a man will go to enact vengeance on someone who wronged him.

Bezos is apparently seeking to appease vengeful former President Donald Trump in case he wins. Trump and billionaire Twitter/X owner, Elon Musk, are reportedly in regular, secret contact with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Russia expert (and former Trump official) Fiona Hill chillingly explains how great nations slip into oligarchy and authoritarianism, to the deep detriment of their ordinary citizens. The New York Times editorial board details Trump’s actual words, his record, and his threats on a broad range of issues, from prosecuting his political enemies to deploying the US military against Americans and more, warning, ‘Believe him.’ Plus Desi Doyen has our new ‘Green News Report.’

ALAN WATTS: Conquering Fear (00:14:32)
Conquering Fear by Alan Watts. Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was a British writer and lecturer who interpreted and popularized Eastern philosophy and religion for a Western audience. Watts wrote more than 25 books and articles on subjects important to Eastern and Western religion, introducing the then-burgeoning youth culture to The Way of Zen (1957), one of the first bestselling books on Buddhism. In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), Watts proposed that Buddhism could be thought of as a form of psychotherapy and not a religion. He considered Nature, Man, and Woman (1958) to be, “from a literary point of view—the best book I have ever written.” He also explored human consciousness and psychedelics in the essay “The New Alchemy” (1958) and in the book The Joyous Cosmology (1962).

THE BRADCAST: 10/24/2024 (Harris on Hope and Trump’s Fascism in Bumpy Closing Days of Election (00:57:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: It’s going to be a very bumpy road to Election Day and beyond, but there is still plenty of opportunities to stay hopeful and helpful, like ‘Markers For Democracy,’ a group ‘Saving our democracy, one postcard at a time.’ In Arizona, an arsonist set fire to a USPS box, damaging absentee ballots. Phoenix police charged a man suspected of shooting at a Democratic National Committee field office. Donald Trump described how he will quash criminal investigations against him if he wins. New reporting reveals Trump, as president, blocked disaster aid to several states as punishment. Following disturbing allegations by Trump’s former chief of staff, US Marine General John Kelly, describing Trump as a ‘fascist’, Vice President Kamala Harris is focusing on a strong anti-fascism, pro-democracy message, reiterating the danger to the nation if Trump regains power. Plus Desi Doyen has our latest ‘Green News Report.’

ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Leadership is Not Just a Title; Its an Attitude (00:30:00)
On this show we are embracing leadership as an attitude and not just as a title. Maybe you’re a CEO, VP, or Director and maybe you don’t hold a title at all. Either way, you are a leader. You don’t need a corner office or fancy title to lead; all you need is a little courage and a lot of self-belief. It’s all about finding your voice and stepping into your power, whether you’re running a team, working behind the scenes, or just navigating your everyday life. Leadership isn’t about ‘calling the shots” it’s about taking charge of your journey, lifting others up, and being the CEO of your own story.

THE CHILDREN’S HOUR: Kids & Death (00:53:00)
In this episode of The Children’s Hour, we talk about something really hard: death and grief. Hosted by Katie Stone, the Kids Crew helps us understand how kids feel when they lose someone special. This could be a person or even a pet. With holidays like Halloween and Da de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) happening around this time, we often think about people we’ve loved and lost. In this show, we learn how to cope with those feelings and how to support each other when we feel sad. Death is a part of life, but talking about it can feel strange or even scary. On this show, we explore why it’s important to talk about grief, how kids experience it, and what we can do to feel better. With the help of special guests and stories from our Kids Crew, we learn that even though grief can be really tough, we can get through it together. There are ways to remember the people and pets we love, and it’s okay to feel sad, mad, or even confused. This episode helps kids understand that they’re not alone in feeling these big emotions.
Two of our Kids Crew members, Sage and Skye, share a touching story about their dog, Sumi, who passed away recently. Skye talks about how much she misses Sumi, and Sage shares a memory about how Sumi once saved her from falling and getting hurt. They describe how, after Sumi passed away, it felt like her spirit stayed with them, finding a special resting place in their family’s garden. By having this memory, Sage and Skye can remember Sumi and feel close to her even though she’s no longer here. This story shows how kids can find comfort and peace through memories of their loved ones. This episode of The Children’s Hour helps kids understand that it’s okay to feel sad or confused about death, and that talking about grief with others can help us heal. Whether it’s remembering a pet like Sumi, or learning about ways to celebrate life through Da de los Muertos, this episode shows that even though grief is hard, it’s something we can all get through together. Tune in to The Children’s Hour for this thoughtful and comforting conversation about life, death, and how kids can cope with big emotions.

LAURA FLANDERS AND FRIENDS: From Ballots to Bodies: Abortion, Trans Rights & the Battle for Bodily Autonomy (00:28:00)
The 2022 Supreme Court ruling to overturn Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health dramatically changed the political scene. Still, just two years on, we are witnessing another watershed moment in the struggle for abortion rights. This Election Day, 10 states will vote on whether to enshrine abortion rights in their state constitution. Since 2022, every ballot measure to protect abortion rights has passed while every measure to restrict or weaken those rights has failed. Meanwhile, extremist Republicans are pushing for a total national abortion ban and seem to have Trump on their side. He told Fox News just days ago that a national abortion ban is off the table, but we’ll see what happens. Joining us to share what’s at stake and what can be done are Nadine Smith, the director of Equality Florida who heads the state’s largest organization dedicated to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Heidi L. Sieck is a Political Strategist & Founder of VOTEPROCHOICE that focuses on reproductive freedom at the state and local levels.
CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Why Curiosity Makes Us Patient, with Abby Hsiung & Alison Adcock (00:28:00)
I found myself thinking about the exquisite agony of a Hitchcock suspense when I came upon an article in Scientific American, “Why Curiosity Makes Us Patient.” The authors assert curiosity makes us hungry for knowledge, but not necessarily in a hurry to get it. It’s a finding that runs in the face of a whole lot of curiosity theory that supposes curiosity is an urgent desire to know, now. But here is research saying: slow down — it’s more interesting than that.
“Curiosity can be on this journey with us, and it can change flavors as we get more information and as we experience time pass.” ~ Abby Hsiung
THE BRADCAST: 10/21/2024 Elon Musk’s ‘Vote Buying’ and Lying for Trump. Guest: Eddie Perez, former Twitter official and election expert (00:57:15)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: Billionaire Elon Musk is using his vast wealth to influence the 2024 Election, leveraging his social media company X (Twitter) almost entirely on behalf of disgraced former President Donald Trump, flooding the site with disinformation and outright lies about the election, and funding dark money political action committees that are micro-targeting different groups of voters with deceptive information disguised to appear legitimate. Musk’s new stunt is giving away $1 million dollars a day to registered Pennsylvania voters who sign his petition, which election law experts say may be ‘illegal vote buying.’ Former Twitter executive and election system expert EDDIE PEREZ debunks a number of Musk’s false election fraud claims, and discusses how Musk has transformed X/Twitter into a degraded den of far-right conspiracy theories, hate speech, and more. Plus Perez has advice for voters on how to counter disinformation and protect their vote.

ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Beyond Offense: The Power of Perspective (00:30:00)
On this show we are making the effort to get beyond the offense as we seek the power of perspective. Are you quick to react and to respond, in hindsight, before you have all the information or fully understand the intent of the question or comment? This might be a hard question to answer most of this behavior is automatic and without prior thought. Reactive behavior often refers to an immediate response to feelings about an uncontrollable situation, a problem, or other issue. Being easily offended can often shut down meaningful dialogue and block personal growth. We’ve all been there, whether it’s an offhanded comment or even something that feels more intentional and targeted. Think back to an instance you’ve faced. Did you react in a way that kept the dialogue going, asking good questions to understand the comment or question fully? Or, did you respond quickly, maybe even aggressively, shutting it down and removing yourself from the equation? Either way, lets broaden our thinking as we focus on how reactionary offense often overlooks the context, intent, or deeper meaning behind someone’s words or actions. Instead of retreating into defensiveness, well approach differing views with curiosity and openness, maintaining confidence in our own beliefs while seeking to understand the other side.

This week, well discuss third-party politics ahead of the November 5th presidential election. With just over two weeks left, polls in swing states such as Michigan show a very close race – one where third party candidates can have an outsize impact. Dr. Rosa Alicia Clemente will join me to share her thoughts on the contentious debate over the so-called spoiler effect. Then, well spend the rest of the hour with dissident Israeli journalist Gideon Levy, whose new book is called The Killing of Gaza: Reports on a Catastrophe. Levy will put the on-going Israeli genocide of Palestinians into a broader context, and discuss political dynamics supporting the war both internally and externally to Israel.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Monkey’s Paw – W. W. Jacobs (1863 – 1943) (00:26:42)
The Monkey’s Paw was written in 1902 by W.W. Jacobs. It’s a dark brooding tale which promises from the start that the light you see at the end of the tunnel is actually an oncoming train. Mr. and Mrs. White of Laburnum Villas step out toward that light by taking up the three wishes granted to the owner of the Monkey’s Paw. Terrible things have happened to previous owners of this artifact but surely the Whites will fare better than those who have gone before…(Summary by Jim Mowatt.)

VP Harris called out Trump’s fascist threat to unleash the military on Americans opposing him, who he called ‘the enemy within.’ More former Trump White House aides and prominent Republicans endorse Harris, including former Fox ‘News’ reporter Geraldo Rivera. Georgia state judge resoundingly rejects GOP effort to undermine certification deadlines for the 2024 election. ENCOURAGEMENTOLOGY: Happiness: Creating Mine, Respecting Yours, Developing Ours (00:30:00)
On this show we are exploring how to create happiness within ourselves, how to respect others happiness without trying to control it (because le face it, that never works), and how to build a collective happiness that lifts us all up. If someone asked you, Are you happy? what would your answer be? Does it depend on the time of day, what’s happening in the world, or another person? Its ok to take a multi-pronged approach to answering that question because happiness is something we create within ourselves, respect others, and develop collectively. Because let’s be real: happiness is a tricky thing to pin down, isn’t it? We all want it, but sometimes were so busy trying to make everyone else happy that we forget to take care of our own. So whether you’re a self-proclaimed people-pleaser, someone who’s learning to set healthy boundaries, or just figuring out what makes you smile, I’ll find something for you. Lets get real about what happiness is, what it isn’t, and how we can all be a little happier together.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN October 12, 2024 (00:59:30)
Segment One
We begin the show with John Austin, Senior Fellow at the Eisenhower Institute at Gettysburg College. We discuss the rise in fascism in the US and all over the world. The growth of inequality between the very rich, and the rest of the populations is the cause. We discuss the development needed to counter this trend. The development needed should be on a geographic scale. Time to allow improvements to take effect is crucial, though positive results should be visible quickly. Otherwise, the resentment of the “left-behind” population will lead to greater instability worldwide. Immigration should be viewed as a positive, since that is often the only source of population in areas that are suffering because of a lack of productive workers.
Segment Two
We then catch up with Dean Preston, Member of San Francisco Board of Supervisors. We discuss how a lot of money is being used to shift San Francisco to the right politically. Many very rich people want to make SF a tech libertarian state with no thought to the people who already live there. They want to eliminate many institutions of direct democracy in the city. Donors are hiding behind blandly named organizations, and are already in control of the Democratic party Central Committee. San Francisco, while not an especially large city, is influential and this is an alarming development.

The US’s global tech dominance is seriously in jeopardy in the 3 years…
Our data centers are stressing electrical grids so much that the tech industry is bouncing from one market to another searching for locations with the capacity to connect their expanding infrastructure that would consume up to a gigawatt of power, which is about as much as San Francisco uses. In some cases, it’s up to 3 times the power consumption of ALL of New York City!! And where does that leave us, the consumer, who can’t compete like a Big Tech company can? LAURA FLANDERS AND FRIENDS (00:28:00)
Israel’s far-right leaders, assisted by their allies in the U.S., have waged a year-long assault on Gaza in the name of self-defense after the attacks by Hamas on October 7 2023. Now Israel stands accused of genocide and war is breaking out across the region. Military conflict won’t make Jews “or any of us” more safe, so why do leaders like Benjamin Netanyahu and former U.S. president Donald Trump continue to get away with casting themselves as the protectors of Israel and the Jewish people? The Trump campaign is actually deeply allied with anti-semitic Christian Zionists whose investment in Israel is tied up with a belief in Biblical End Times when Jews convert or perish. In this report, (which was recorded before the Israeli assassination of Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon,) we turn to Ben Lorber, a Senior Analyst at Political Research Associates and co-author of the book Safety Through Solidarity: A Radical Guide to Fighting Antisemitism. Also joining us are Phyllis Bennis, Director of the New Internationalism Project and fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington D.C. and the author of several books on the United Nations and the Middle East; and Yoav Peck, an organizational psychologist, Executive Director of Solidarity of Nations and Israeli peace activist based in Jerusalem. Together we unpack the links between Christian Zionism and Jewish Zionism, look at how trauma has become a political tool, and ask, how might any of us become less vulnerable to the weaponizing of our fears, with a commentary from Laura.

THE BRADCAST 10/10/2024: Milton’s Mess, FL’s US House Losers, Trump’s Made-in-China Bibles (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: Hurricane Milton pummeled Florida after making landfall south of Tampa Bay as a Category 3 storm – – a less-than-worst-case scenario that caused devastating, widespread damage. Man-made climate change driven by the burning of fossil fuels contributed in multiple ways to Milton’s destruction. Donald Trump and Republicans are putting their own supporters at grave risk by spreading lies about the federal disaster response to Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Several MAGA US House members from Florida also spread lies about FEMA and voted against funding the agency at all this year, just days before Helene’s catastrophic landfall. The MAGA Superintendent of Public Schools in Oklahoma launched a scheme to force state taxpayers to buy 50,000 Trump-branded Bibles to put in classrooms (with profits going to Trump), even as he delayed fulfilling a state mandate to purchase emergency asthma inhalers for schools. New reporting reveals Trump’s Bibles are made in China and of very poor quality. Plus Desi Doyen has our new ‘Green News Report.’

Then: why are scientists still talking about 1.5 degrees of warming as the goal, when last year was already hotter than that? We ask leading researcher Christoph Bertram for a more realistic take. Appalachia and Nepal are reeling from city-breaking floods, and Las Vegas is still sinfully hot in October. Sorry United Kingdom, you drew the never-ending-rain card in the climate casino. Who’s next?

THE BRADCAST: 10/9/2024 Guest: Dana Gold of the Democracy Protection Initiative for election whistleblowers (00:58:00)
On today’s ‘BradCast’: Monster Hurricane Milton is menacing Florida’s central Gulf Coast even as millions in that state and five others are struggling to recover from Hurricane Helene two weeks ago. North Carolina’s bipartisan Board of Elections approved a number of emergency measures to help voters in the hardest-hit counties. Naturally, Trump Republicans and Fox News are already spreading disinformation about the new rules. Republicans are using election disinformation and more than a hundred election lawsuits to create pretext to challenge the results if Donald Trump loses. DANA GOLD, Director of the Government Accountability Project’s Democracy Protection Initiative, explains the organization’s new guide offering critical assistance for whistleblower election officials and poll workers to report wrongdoing or irregularities, while ensuring their protection in the volatile, hyper-partisan environment of the 2024 election.

ALAN WATTS: Alan Watts Opens Up About Religion (00:17:54)
This summarised lecture by Alan Watts is from the Alan Watts Library at https://alanwatts.org. The image of Jesus is owned by the church traditions and authorities. He has been moulded to fit the interests of the church patriarchs for centuries, so much so that the prevailing image of Jesus is now so far removed from what he truly represented. Namely an energy from the future who came to earth to bring illumination and knowledge to humanity. The reason why the Jesus/Jeshua personality came to earth was to create an opening or doorway to a different state of consciousness. He wanted to set an example of the possibilities that are available to each human being. He wanted to hold up a mirror to human beings and remind them of their own divine origin and the dormant potentials they carried within. The potentials for peace, freedom and mastership over oneself. We discuss the systemic nature of problems like these and the implications felt throughout marginalized communities. In the second part of the show, we discuss whether or not Africans were kidnapped and forced into slavery. The fact that Africans were sold into slavery is well documented but due to an effort from historical conservative forces, the fact that many Africans were kidnapped often goes undiscussed. We lean on a content creator @levertthebassman to get our dialogue started. Our Way Black History Fact highlights the other ways (besides purchasing) that White slavers obtained African slaves.
LITERATURE ALOUD: People of the Abyss (1903) by Jack London ch. 26-27 (00:25:42)
Jack London lived for a time within the grim and grimy world of the East End of London, where half a million people scraped together hardly enough on which to survive. Even if they were able to work, they were paid only enough to allow them a pitiful existence. He grew to know and empathize with these forgotten (or ignored) people as he spoke with them and tasted the workhouse, life on the streets, … and the food, which was cheap, barely nutritious, and foul. CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Curiosity & The Sensational Museum, with Alison Eardley (00:28:00)
What if museums were sticky, stinky, noisy places? What if they were sensational? Psychologist Alison Eardley is on a mission to make museums more accessible and inclusive — physically and conceptually — for all audiences. Her work draws on all of our senses, engaging us far more deeply with what’s before us. What if museums helped us tap our collective curiosity to co-create our visits? “You actually can’t get objective and neutral description, it’s always based on someone’s perspective. And it doesn’t have to be based on the sighted person’s perspective, because sighted people have different experiences and why should a sighted person’s experience automatically be assumed to be superior?” ~ Alison Eardley, PhD

Republicans’ Project 2025 schemes to privatize FEMA and other critical agencies, including the National Weather Service. North Carolina’s Republican-controlled state legislature over many years has weakened building codes that made Hurricane Helene’s destruction far worse, far more expensive, and more deadly. For this episode of our monthly feature, Meet the BIPOC Press, Laura is joined by co-host Kadia Tubman of the Scripps News broadcast network, along with guests Chenjerai Kumanyika, NYU journalism professor and host of Empire City, a gripping new podcast on the origins of the NY police, and investigative journalist Christopher Lomahquahu of the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism within the Cronkite School at Arizona State University. On today’s ‘BradCast’: Special coverage of Tuesday night’s one and only Vice Presidential Debate before Election Day. The polite debate between Minnesota’s Democratic Gov. Tim Walz and Ohio’s Republican U.S. Senator J.D. Vance was surprisingly focused on policy, but suffered from a lack of fact-checking from CBS News debate moderators. Vance used politeness to unleash a flood of provable lies, masking his well-documented, autocratic MAGA policy preferences on everything from abortion to gun safety, climate change to health care, while gaslighting voters on his running mate Donald Trump’s violent attacks on our democracy. Walz stumbled early on but later found his footing, displaying a command of facts, data and reality. Salon opinion columnist HEATHER DIGBY PARTON and ‘DRIFTGLASS’ of the ‘Pro Left Podcast’ discuss Vance’s sane-washing, whatabout-ism, lies and damning non-answers to a host of topics raised during the debate, and Walz’s responses to them in our lively special coverage.

LITERATURE ALOUD: People of the Abyss (1903) by Jack London ch. 20 (00:17:50)
EMILY LEVY, founder and director of Scrutineers.org, explains how her non-partisan, non-profit organization is helping to train folks like YOU to be poll watchers and poll observers, and details the many useful ways folks can help ensure our elections are accurately tabulated, including helping to disprove false claims of fraud after the election. CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Rethinking Curiosity, with Todd Kashdan (00:28:00)
little enterprise, I invited curiosity researcher Todd Kashdan, PhD, to join me to rethink some of the old curiosity standards. The research has evolved and we’re going with it. What better way to keep the curiosity alive than by questioning what we think we know. “One of the tropes that shows up in curiosity is the idea that preschoolers ask thousands of questions per day … and then it drops to almost nothing. The research doesn’t bear this out.” ~ Todd Kashdan, PhD

THE BRADCAST: 9/27/2024 Encore: Pastor Doug Pagitt of Vote Common Good on the white evangelical vote (00:58:00) Encore: original airdate 9-18-2024. On today’s ‘BradCast’: Elon Musk, the richest man in the world turned virulent Trump supporter, has gamed his increasingly rightwing social media site to spread dangerous, wildly false lies about U.S. elections that have resulted in threats against elections officials around the country, and suggested the assassinations of President Biden and Vice President Harris. Harris called out the lies of Donald Trump and J.D. Vance that are endangering residents of Springfield, Ohio. Pastor DOUG PAGITT, Executive Director of Vote Common Good, explains why the decidedly un-religious Trump still dominates the white Christian evangelical vote, how we got here as a nation, and his group’s bus tour through swing states to help Christians understand that they don’t have to vote Republican, and helping Democratic candidates learn how to reach those voters. https://bradblog.com/?cat=675
