KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: The Kids Are Alright (00:57:20)

After Charlie Kirk, and thanks to ICE, kids are moving left. While the hard right has had significant success in rallying young people (mostly males), the anger at ICE and a desire for a sense of belonging is moving more and more kids to the populist left. Look how many high school anti-ICE walkouts there’ve been; they matter. And in a long great American tradition of similar organizing venues, the Young Organizer Boot Camp brings kids together in a sense of belonging to connect, and yield real social and political change. Rev. Liz Theoharis of the Karois Center and co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign on this show talks about young people across the country who are becoming inspired and taking grassroots progressive action in a number of fields. After all, real political change comes from the ground up.

Parenti (1933-20260 rarely talked about his life. How does a NYC street kid get accepted to Yale? How does he lose the privilege of his PhD. in an arrest at a demonstration against the war on Vietnam, and become an internationally acclaimed author and lecturer?

Michael Parenti grew up in a poor, working class Italian community in New York City. When he received his PhD in political science from Yale in 1962 he was the success and pride of his family. He risked and ended his academic career when he openly opposed the war on Vietnam. Ultimately the choice he made then was a good one. He became an independent political writer and thinker and author of over 20 books. Invitations to speak came from all over North America. His topics were history, fascism, US Imperialism, globalization and terrorism. His writings have been translated into more than a dozen languages.

Donald Trump has a long record of demeaning and berating women. Washington-Leapheart is a minister, professor, and the first-ever Strategic Partnerships Director at Political Research Associates (PRA), a social justice research and strategy center founded in 1981 by the feminist political scientist Jean Hardisty. THE BRADCAST: 2/19/2026 Accountability Everywhere But Here (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: South Korea’s former President Yoon Suk Yeol has been found guilty of an attempted coup in December of 2024 and sentenced to life in prison. Top government officials in Great Britain, Norway, France and elsewhere have faced accountability related to information revealed in the Epstein Files. We are seeing accountability everywhere but in the US, where Donald Trump’s corrupt Justice Department is blatantly covering up for him, violating the law. New reporting finds that FBI documents detailing credible Epstein-related allegations against Trump have disappeared, and examines potential links to Trump’s theft of classified documents after his first term. LITERATURE ALOUD: The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell ch. 31-33 (00:22:38) Clearly frustrated at the refusal of his contemporaries to recognise the iniquity of society, Tressell’s cast of hypocritical Christians, exploitative capitalists and corrupt councillors provide a backdrop for his main target — the workers who think that a better life is “not for the likes of them”. Hence the title of the book; Tressell paints the workers as “philanthropists” who throw themselves into back-breaking work for poverty wages in order to generate profit for their masters. The hero of the book, Frank Owen, is a socialist who believes that the capitalist system is the real source of the poverty he sees all around him. In vain he tries to convince his fellow workers of his world view, but finds that their education has trained them to distrust their own thoughts and to rely on those of their “betters”. Much of the book consists of conversations between Owen and the others, or more often of lectures by Owen in the face of their jeering; this was presumably based on Tressell’s own experiences. THE BRADCAST: 2/18/2026 Antisemitism Rising Inside MAGA, with investigative journalist Art Levine (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: After Trump FCC Chair Brendan Carr threatened to rewrite Equal Time rules for late-night talk shows, the venerable CBS television network, now owned by rightwing billionaires, immediately surrendered, barring ‘Late Show’ host Stephen Colbert from broadcasting his interview with U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico (D-TX). The move backfired, with the interview on YouTube garnering many millions more views than it might have otherwise. Journalist Art Levine discusses his deep dive documenting the rise in blatant, public antisemitism in the Republican MAGA movement that is causing a slow-motion implosion. Levine also covers nutty MAGA conspiracy theories about the assassination of Charlie Kirk, how the Trump Administration weaponized campus protests against Israel’s war on Gaza to extort universities and other organizations, and much more.

Jesse Jackson passed today at 84. Polls show Donald Trump sinking to new lows in public opinion. Congressional Republicans’ voter suppression law, the deceptively named ‘SAVE America Act’, would make it much harder to register to vote and much easier to purge legal voters from the rolls, using a notoriously inaccurate database. Election integrity advocate JENNIFER COHEN explains what’s really in the GOP’s voter suppression law, the ‘sneaky’ ways it ensnares legal voters and erects new barriers to the ballot box, how voters can act to protect their voting rights, and much more. SPIRIT IN ACTION: Sissy Gagged: Sex, Gender, and Jesus (00:55:00)

We’re fortunate to have Peterson Toscano back today as guest-host for Spirit In Action, is bringing us segments from his Bubble & Squeak podcast. This episode is about sex, gender, and Jesus – and what happens when our bodies get wrapped in shame, pleasure, politics, and power. It comes in 4 parts including a visit with Rev. Dr. Tina Beardsley, a priest, theologian, and trans woman who’s been quietly transforming the Church of England from the inside out. Part 2 is with Kyle Casey Chu, aka Panda Dulce, a drag queen, writer, and survivor of a Proud Boys ambush at Drag Story Hour. There’s talk about sacred drag, queer disappointment, and how to live when the fantasy of queer community doesn’t match reality. Part 3 is with Rev. Dr. Beverly Dale who is a poet, preacher, and the founder of the Incarnation Institute for Sex & Faith, and her recent book is Who Told You That You Were Naked?. And part 4 is a sound slice from a rousing dance at a Quaker gathering in Florida. Peterson uses the audio-scape to draw a delightful image.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell ch. 26-27 (00:24:08)
Clearly frustrated at the refusal of his contemporaries to recognise the iniquity of society, Tressell’s cast of hypocritical Christians, exploitative capitalists and corrupt councillors provide a backdrop for his main target — the workers who think that a better life is “not for the likes of them”. ALAN WATTS: How to Enjoy Life (00:05:44)

Buddhist teacher Watts reflects on life. Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was a British writer and lecturer who interpreted and popularized Eastern philosophy and religion for a Western audience. Born in Chislehurst, England, he moved to the United States in 1938 and began Zen training in New York. Pursuing a career, he attended Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, where he received a master’s degree in theology. Watts became an Episcopal priest in 1945, then left the ministry in 1950 and moved to California, where he joined the faculty of the American Academy of Asian Studies. Watts gained a large following in the San Francisco Bay Area while working as a volunteer programmer at KPFA, a Pacifica Radio station in Berkeley. Watts wrote more than 25 books and articles on subjects important to Eastern and Western religion, introducing the then-burgeoning youth culture to The Way of Zen (1957), one of the first bestselling books on Buddhism. In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), Watts proposed that Buddhism could be thought of as a form of psychotherapy and not a religion. He considered Nature, Man, and Woman (1958) to be, “from a literary point of view—the best book I have ever written.” He also explored human consciousness and psychedelics in the essay “The New Alchemy” (1958) and in the book The Joyous Cosmology (1962).

THE BRADCAST: Encore: Josh Kovensky of TPM on Trump turning ‘War on Terror’ against domestic foes  (00:58:00)

Encore: original airdate 2-4-2026. On today’s ‘BradCast’: The Trump Administration claims it is ‘drawing down’ the deployment of ICE and CBP goons in Minneapolis, but is still leaving 2,000 thugs on the streets. So many Trump Justice Department attorneys have resig ned from the Minneapolis federal field office, refusing to participate in the administration’s violent immigration tactics, that it has caused severe staffing shortages. Talking Points Memo’s investigative reporter JOSH KOVENSKY explains the Trump Administration’s new effort to revive the nutty ‘ItalyGate’ conspiracy theory that Donald Trump believes cost him the 2020 election. Kovensky also covers a very disturbing series of Justice Department memos that repurpose a post-9/11 federal terrorism statute to turn it against peaceful protesters and those regarded as political opponents of Trump with ‘domestic terrorism’ charges, and much more.

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN February 14, 2026 (00:59:30)

Segment One

We begin the show with Mark Joseph Stern, Senior writer at Slate who covers courts and legal matters. We discuss how the Department of Justice appears to be collapsing. Many lawyers have left, and those who remain are being assigned to ICE matters, rather than investigating crimes, such as cartel crimes, and other, serious Federal crimes. In effect, Americans are LESS safe as a result.

Segment Two

We then catch up with Bill Curry and Robert Hennelly. We discuss Pam Bondi’s reprehensible testimony before Congress. Eugenics appears to be a prime motivator to the administration to allow the wealthy ‘elite’ members of the United States to proceed as they have been.

KEEPING DEMOCRACY ALIVE: Why Did Trump Try to Kill the American Auto Industry? (00:42:28)

Why would an American president stab Americas signature industry in the back? Our guest today, Ryan Cooper senior editor of The American Prospect argues that it makes no actual economic sense but that Trump is dragging his obsessive anti-green agenda into killing EV jobs at the big three automakers. In what Cooper calls “The whims of a mad dictator,” he is taking away subsidies for the production of EVs that Biden put in place in the Inflation Reduction Act, instead putting that money into tax cuts for the richest and keeping the oil industry happy. Meanwhile our biggest Detroit-made auto-buying country Canada will gladly take it’s business elsewhere. Trump is giving a gift to China in his “America First” agenda [Please note, due to technical difficulties, this show is about 44 minutes only]

TUC RADIO: Michael Parenti: Superpatriotism and the Importance of Being Number One (00:29:00)

What does it mean to love one’s country? Why is it so important to be number one? In this sharp and funny speech MP dissects the uses of patriotism.

That was the introduction to a Michael Parenti talk given in 1988, at the end of the Reagan administration. That talk became a TUC Radio program and 2004 book published by City Lights. Superpatriotism: How hype, fear, and mindless flag-waving are supplanting informed debate and commitment to democracy.

Now, in 2018, so many years later, slogans such as: America First, America the Greatest Country on Earth are having a powerful come back. Resistance to Superpatriotism ” even if it is simply remaining seated or taking a knee during the national anthem at a sports event, can draw a hateful response from those who Parenti was concerned about a generation ago.

Michael Parenti received his PhD in political science from Yale. He is the author of 23 books and many more articles. His works have been translated into eighteen languages. He grew up in an Italian-American working-class family in NY City. His PhD. from Yale would have guaranteed him a career in academia. He knowingly gave up that chance when he openly opposed the war on Vietnam and was arrested. He decided to become an independent author, lecturer and activist.

Parenti spoke in 1988 in Boulder, CO, recorded by KGNU Radio.

Michael Parenti died on January 24, 2026.

CHOOSE TO BE CURIOUS: Curiosity, Kids & Learning to Learn, with Elizabeth Bonawitz (00:28:00)

Kids are learning machines! But how do they do it? Cognitive scientist Elizabeth Bonawitz is helping us understand how children learn to learn and what role curiosity has to play in those processes. From dinner table placemats to trading stickers for science facts, she finds creative ways to get at the heart of this most human of mechanisms.

“I think about curiosity as a sort of ‘mise en place’ for learning. It gets the mind ready and set up — so that when that information comes in, it’s ready to learn from it and encode it most effectively.” ~ Elizabeth Bonawitz

THE BRADCAST: 2/10/2026 Trump Presidency Now Little More Than Racism, Corruption, Culture War Nonsense (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: Republicans love the ‘culture wars’ because they keep their voters perpetually outraged and divert attention from solving real problems. Some of Donald Trump’s MAGA followers are ignoring his edict to hate Puerto Rican U.S. citizen Bad Bunny’s spectacular Super Bowl Halftime show. CBS News’ ratings plummet after rightwing takeover. Internal DHS documents expose the Trump Administration’s lies, revealing that less than 14 percent of detained immigrants have been charged or convicted of violent crime. Trump’s ‘Religious Liberty Commission’ sued for religious discrimination. Trump threatened to block a vital new border bridge with Canada for corrupt reasons. Unsealed affidavit in the FBI’s seizure of Fulton County 2020 election records is based on long-debunked allegations. Plus Desi Doyen has our new ‘Green News Report.’

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell ch. 25 (00:26:54)
Clearly frustrated at the refusal of his contemporaries to recognise the iniquity of society, Tressell’s cast of hypocritical Christians, exploitative capitalists and corrupt councillors provide a backdrop for his main target — the workers who think that a better life is “not for the likes of them”. THE BRADCAST: 2/9/2026 About that FBI Raid of the Fulton County, GA Elections Warehouse, with elections expert Marilyn Marks (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The joyous, rollicking Super Bowl Halftime show with music superstar Bad Bunny drove Donald Trump into another tantrum. Yet another special election showed a major shift to Democrats, this time in a state legislative race in Louisiana. MARILYN MARKS, election integrity and security expert at the Coalition for Good Governance, explains the rising alarm among election officials over the Trump FBI’s unprecedented confiscation of 2020 election materials, including ballots and voter rolls, in Fulton County, Georgia. Marks explains the details of what we know so far about the raid; how genuine problems with Georgia’s unverifiable touchscreen elections are ripe for cherry-picking by bad faith actors, and could be used to interfere with the 2026 midterm elections; actions voters can take to help secure elections in their own communities; and much more.

ALAN WATTS: Stop Thinking about Life -1968 full lecture (00:22:56)

Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was a British philosopher, writer, and speaker, best known as an interpreter and populariser of Eastern philosophy for a Western audience. He considered Nature, Man and Woman (1958) to be, “from a literary point of view—the best book I have ever written.” He also explored human consciousness, in the essay “The New Alchemy” (1958), and in the book The Joyous Cosmology (1962). Towards the end of his life, he divided his time between a houseboat in Sausalito and a cabin on Mount Tamalpais. Many of his books are now available in digital format and many of his recorded talks and lectures are available on the Internet. According to the critic Erik Davis, his “writings and recorded talks still shimmer with a profound and galvanizing lucidity.

THE BRADCAST: 2/6/2026 Encore: Bad and Good Bunnies, and an Electoral Shockwave Deep in the ‘Red’ Heart of TX (00:58:00)

Encore: original airdate 2-2-2026. On today’s ‘BradCast’: The federal government is in a partial shutdown, as Congressional Democrats insist on new guardrails for Donald Trump’s ICE and CBP goons and their violent immigration crackdowns. Grammy-winner Bad Bunny spoke movingly against the horrors of the Trump regime. A judge ordered 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father released from a Texas detention center that now reportedly has a measles outbreak. In Texas special elections, a Democrat won a long-delayed open U.S. House seat, further eroding the razor-thin Republican majority. In a race for state senate, the Democratic candidate stunningly flipped a deep red seat by a substantial margin, prompting Trump to lie that he knew nothing about the race or Republican candidate he had endorsed. Trump also lied about why he is shutting down the Kennedy Center. Callers weigh in.

EARTH RIOT RADIO #207 – ICE Veterans Turn In Their Weapons (00:29:00)

CE Veterans Turn In Guns and Meditate

Who knew? At the end of Trump’s term in office, Americans were shocked as 70,000 ICE veterans turned to Buddhism after bursting into tears at ‘Truth and Reconciliation” sessions. Forced into abandoned government housing units for the mass healing process mandated by the courts, called by wags “The Asshole Hilton”, the ICE vets were stricken with guilt so paralyzing that they actually took the advice of the protesters to “SHUT THE EF UP AND GO HOME!!!” – which is similar to the practice of committing to long periods of silence with closed eyes.

Segment One

We begin the show with Matt Angle, Principal of Angle Strategies, and Director of the Texas Democratic Trust. We discuss the results of the recent special election in Texas for the Texas Legislature, where a newcomer Democrat beat a long-term Republican candidate by 14 points. The issues were local. We also discuss the upcoming US Senate race in Texas, for Cornyn’s seat.

Segment Two

We then catch up with Bill Curry and Laura Jedeed. We discuss the situation in Minneapolis, where ICE is still targeting people. The effect is to make the populace scarred for life, because they are living through an occupation by armed, masked, and aggressive interlopers. We discuss also the effect of immigration, as described by the conservative Cato Institute, which dis an analysis of immigrants’ contributions and costs. Even by their analysis, contributions far outweigh any costs of immigration.

TUC RADIO: Michael Parenti: The Supremely Political Court (00:29:00)

In his extraordinary 26 minute history of the Supreme Court Dr. Michael Parenti warned us in 1995 that this partisan, aristocratic institution might one day empower an autocratic president. It seems that time has come and two Trump appointees, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, can push the scales of justice in favor of their politics. Unless there is a groundswell to question and change the legal rules of that institution. Why is so much power being given to 9 unelected, non term limited judges.

Michael Parenti was born into a working class Italian family in East Harlem, New York City. He went on to receive his Ph.D. in political science at Yale in 1962. His academic career was cut short by his dismissal after he was arrested for protesting the US war on Vietnam. Parenti became an independent scholar, lecturer and author. And he remained an activist as well.

SEA CHANGE RADIO: Charles Komanoff: Congestion Pricing In NYC (00:29:00)

Congestion pricing refers to fees levied on drivers in particularly dense areas or at rush hour, the aim being to keep cars off the road and prevent traffic jams. Of course, strategies like these are most effective when there’s a corresponding plan to reinvest profits into public transit systems, bike lanes, and other equitable means of transport. As you can imagine, congestion pricing is not universally popular and often leads to vigorous debate. Singapore was the first city to introduce a congestion pricing model — since then cities from Milan and Stockholm to London and Rome have implemented similar systems. This week’s guest on Sea Change Radio, Charles Komanoff, is a congestion pricing advocate who writes about New York City’s recent foray into the practice as a successful work in progress. We talk about the evolution of congestion pricing in New York, examine its effects one year into implementation, and discuss whether this type of model could be rolled out in other U.S. cities.

LAURA FLANDERS AND FRIENDS: The Data Center Revolt: John Cassidy & Faiz Shakir on People vs. AI Oligarchs (00:28:00)

An AI revolution is underway, but so is the resistance. People across the country are feeling the strain of the huge energy-sucking data processing centers that AI requires, and telling their elected officials to slow down or stop new big tech projects for firms like OpenAI, Amazon, Google, Facebook and Microsoft. Data from a 2025 Pew study shows that only 17 percent of Americans think AI will have a positive impact over the next 20 years. But its a David vs. Goliath battle. Today’s guests say AI expansion is not a red or blue issue; it’s about who gets to decide how human and natural resources are distributed, who controls the technology, and who stands to benefit. Faiz Shakir is the Founder and Executive Director of the labor-focused news platform More Perfect Union, and serves as a political advisor for Senator Bernie Sanders. John Cassidy, staff writer at the New Yorker, is the author of the recent book, Capitalism and Its Critics: A History: From the Industrial Revolution to AI, in which he draws our attention back to the Luddites, the 18th century workers whose revolt deserves our closer attention. Plus, our correspondent’s coverage of a shocking scene at a public comment meeting in Wisconsin when a local woman was arrested and dragged away. LITERATURE ALOUD: The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell ch. 23 (00:22:02)
Clearly frustrated at the refusal of his contemporaries to recognise the iniquity of society, Tressell’s cast of hypocritical Christians, exploitative capitalists and corrupt councillors provide a backdrop for his main target — the workers who think that a better life is “not for the likes of them”. THE BRADCAST: 2/4/2026 Guest: Josh Kovensky of TPM on Trump turning ‘War on Terror’ against domestic foes (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The Trump Administration claims it is ‘drawing down’ the deployment of ICE and CBP goons in Minneapolis but is still leaving 2,000 thugs on the streets. So many Trump Justice Department attorneys have resigned from the Minneapolis federal field office, refusing to participate in the administration’s violent immigration tactics, that it has caused severe staffing shortages.

LITERATURE ALOUD: The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell ch. 22 (00:22:47)
Clearly frustrated at the refusal of his contemporaries to recognise the iniquity of society, Tressell’s cast of hypocritical Christians, exploitative capitalists and corrupt councillors provide a backdrop for his main target — the workers who think that a better life is “not for the likes of them”. THE BRADCAST: 2/3/2026 Losing At Legal and Political Trench Warfare, Trump Threatens to ‘Nationalize’ Elections (00:58:00)

On today’s ‘BradCast’: The Trump Administration is losing in the lower courts and earning scathing rulings from judges. A federal judge blocked the administration’s cancellation of legal protected status for 350,000 Haitian refugees in the U.S. and excoriated DHS Sec. Kristi Noem’s thinly-disguised racist rhetoric. Donald Trump’s threats are escalating as his attempted fascist takeover of America stalls; while he has no authority to interfere with or ‘nationalize’ our elections, he is likely to try. Trump demanded the release of former MAGA Colorado election official Tina Peters, imprisoned over her criminal efforts to defraud the 2020 election and illicitly breach voting system software. ‘Saturday Night Live’ brilliantly satirized how some MAGA supporters are finding their way back to sanity, or at least away from Trump, and how to help them get back safely. THE BRADCAST: 2/2/2026 Bad and Good Bunnies, and an Electoral Shockwave Deep in the ‘Red’ Heart of TX (00:58:00)

Best of ATTITUDE with ARNIE ARNESEN January 31, 2025 (00:59:30)

Segment One

We sit with Steve Paikin, Canadian journalist, broadcaster, and talk show host. We discuss what is the future for Canada, after the Canadian Prime Minister’s speech at Davos. We are not friends any more, and the new reality is that Canada will likely sever many ties to the US. Canada will be spending more on its defense.

Segment Two

We then catch up with Sophia A. McClennen, Professor of International Affairs and Comparative Literature at Penn State University. We discuss how we all should respond to the lies and propaganda that colors what he hear and see in the news and through social media posts that pretend to be news. Debunking is not enough, telling the truth should be swift and emphatic. Should be depend on the ‘normal’ institutions to protect us? What if those institutions (Congress, SCOTUS, law enforcement agencies) are useless? Are we complicit if we just give up?
